Nope, she never does. Anyone that thin and that pretty isn’t going to look bad. But I do think the coat dress would be better with a belt.

And a better hat. And a shoe that wasn’t a typical LK Bennet pump. Maybe it’s not bad, but it is sleep inducing.

Wait – what? How many actresses (Ginifer Goodwin just shot to mind) and entertainers (Rhianna) do we see here everyday looking like a dog’s breakfast?

      • Shiitake

        Too many.

Kate looks lovely for whatever official occasion these pictures derive from.

Yeah seriously. Can’t once we get like, a “laundry day” photo? Or like a “running out to the bodega after waking up hungover at 2PM to buy a deli sandwich and a giant fountain soda” kinda photo? I’m gonna go ahead and guess that duchesses don’t do that though.

They aren’t any of those, of her.

Due largely to an anti-pap law that the UK has in place to avoid the type of hounding that led to Diana, Princess of Wales death. But I am always happy when I see your coverage of the Royal Fam!

Charlene of Monaco is a perfect example of a beautiful, thin, rich woman who does look bad fairly consistenly. I think a lot of what we see from Kate is her personality and her own sense of style – which is why she always looks good.

I am sure eventually she’ll make a mis-step, and we’ll all be there to appreciate it!

    • ChaChaHeels

Imagine Charlene’s clothes on Kate. It’s an understatement to say “mega improvement”. The cuts alone would give Kate a more youthful, happy, and stylish appearance. Put Kate’s clothes on Charlene and you’d have the melancholic and aged-before-her-time look to match the Princess’ sadness.

      • Sandra

What about Kate’s appearance makes you think she needs to look happier? She positively glows. Perhaps you refer to something that would make you happier?

I just think that when you’re always in public with an octagenarian who wears clothing that is that much more colourful, cutting edge, and youthful than your own (and you’re in your twenties) something is wrong with your idea of “appropriate”. But then again, I look at Wills’ clothing and I wonder how someone whose parents are both famous for dressing so well could look so poorly shod and so badly dressed….all the time. So they match each other. It’s kind of sad they both choose to look so cookie cutter boring, when one of Britain’s greatest industries is in clothing design, from the textile end to the design and finishing end. If it’s their job to represent their country in “The Firm” as people like to call it, they’re failing where clothing as a British achievement is concerned. And as for Charlene–it’s really a bad sign when a woman the world sees as “trapped” and “depressed” about the reality of her life wears clothing that is that much sunnier, more youthful, and far more pretty than the supposedly happy Kathy Cambridge.

      Ditto!
I fall asleep every time she apears, she’s so… beige!!!!
Charlotte Casiraghi, thats my kind of princess (though she’s not actually a princess, but close enough… you know what i mean!)

Oh there are jeans/flats/giant cardigan pics of Kate, mostly taken in Wales. Nothing skankier than that. This gives you an idea of how nasty the weather has been in the UK – so that a longsleeved coatdress not only seems like a good idea, an extra plaid scarf in case it gets colder is a good idea. Same scarf she had with the red dress in the Jubilee flotilla, it’s her and Wills’ official tartan as Earl and Countess of Strathearn. I thought the pale yellow was a good choice here – not bright red because she’s just a spectator at this event, but a nice colour.

She looks fine…. I agree, a belt may help a bit, but I don’t think she would ever look bad.

I wanted to make a rude comment about Will’s tassel here………

It’s perfectly appropriate office wear, and after all, public appearances are her job. Everything is tasteful and fits well, the colours are nice, her hair is lovely, she is smiling nicely, etc.

But my god it’s all so boring. I wonder if she will go the QEII route and basically wear the same inoffensive outfit for the next sixty years.

    • glee
      0

She is already bucking the QEII trend – she doesn’t look like an Easter egg all the time!!! And she smiles – with teeth showing.

Not fond of the little acorn hat, but other than that she looks nice.

I can’t imagine who helps these people get dressed in their ceremonial garb though. I mean really- I’m sure EVERYTHING has a hidden meaning (the huge tassel means that William is within one bell pull of something, and the feather duster hat means they’re allowed to clean up England if they want) so can you imagine if it gets goofed up? “OMG. Princess Anne is wearing the bell pull, that means we attack Denmark!”

    • Dazie

Oh. Princess Anne IS wearing the bell pull.

So sorry, Denmark. It was nice knowing you.

I am bored by that outfit. She’s the Countess of something Scottish, and has a tartan that she is carrying in scarf form…it would have been more interesting if she had worn something with the tartan on it. Like as a scarf/belt or something. But the yellow and brown…snooze.

Oooh, I love that suit on Wills in the first picture. I know he wears suits like that all the time for events, but it looks so good on him.

I don’t LOVE this on Kate, but like you said, she never really looks bad so it’s still okay by me.

    • ML

Agreed on Wills in these type suits. He’s looking more and more like old school badass King of England material each day. In other words, nothing at all like his father.

Meh on Kate’s hat but the rest of it looks fine to me.

I like the cut, but I don’t think it’s a good color for her at all. I think it’s a hard color in general for anyone to pull off, it’s the shade of yellow that generally just makes the wearer look jaundiced and kind of consumptive.

Love the butter-yellow coatdress, and wouldn’t change a thing on it, but I do not like the color of her hat. That is not flattering.

I think it would be darling in a muted red.

What really stands out here is the unrelenting fug of Princess Anne. She dresses in a more matronly fashion than her 86 year old mother. Being royal (and 60ish) should not condemn a woman to looking dowdy all the time.

Am I alone in thinking Princess Anne is a total badass???

Everybody else is talking about the clothes and all I can think of is “How’s it hangin, Wills?”. So mature.

I’m enamored with Kate and her selection of clothing and fascinators. She is adorable and her figure…stunning.

    Harry, your presence is required.

Kate needs a hat with some color, perhaps a color from her tartan. She also needs a brooch or something. Kate, take a lesson from your Granny in law and wear brooches!

Princess Anne’s shoes rock my world.

Nope, Trace. Princess Anne is the shizz. She’s my favorite.

  18. Michelle

Actually, that’s the Strathearn tartan, and as Countess of Strathearn (her Scottish title), she was giving a shout out to her peeps. She is elegant, lady-like and chic.

There are things that Kate wears that I like better than others….but I think her selections for her first year of Princess-dom(?) are perfect. She’s bucked the system by recycling clothing, she does these wonderful little non comment comments ( like the tartan, like the red hat and maple leaf broach she wore in Canada).

Those photos must have been taken in the five minutes this week it hasn’t been raining. As an Edinburgh resident, I have to say it has been FOUL this week.

Seafoam green or not, Anne’s dress IS the perfect compliment to her ceremonial garb. Well played, Princess Royal, well played.

The colour scheme and hat on Kate make me think of some particularly scrumptious pastry. Darn you, Duchess, now I’m hungry.

Somewhere, Harry’s making rude jokes about his brother’s oversized tassel.

As usual, this outfit is all about the knees. Are they ever covered? Glorious in their bony perfection, I realize. but that particular length of skirt or coat seems a constant for her.

  23. Amy

Crazy about hats? What about this crazy coat-dress business. Do you know anyone other than the British Royals who wears a COAT-DRESS?!? I know it’s not 30 degrees over there, but it’s warmer than 10, isn’t it? (The weather network tells me London is around 15-20 during the day right now). How about a nice day dress?

    • Kirsten
      0

They’re in Edinburgh. The temperature in Edinburgh today is about 15C, and they were in St Giles Cathedral which is cold and draughty. A coat-dress was about right for the temperature yesterday – she wouldn’t have been too warm.

This is acceptable, but not awesome. I like the butter yellow color, but it looks almost a bit big on her, for something supposedly made to order. I also feel like it’s a bit plain– she could have used some jewelry (a brooch is an excellent suggestion!) or something to liven it up a little. She looks great, of course, but it’s just a little boring.

Boring and too old for her – the Queen at 86 could pull that off.

    • ChaChaHeels

My point exactly. The queen’s wardrobe would give Kathy a youthful boost.

Why are those little hats called “fascinators?” Anyone know?

    • Jules
      0

I’ve always heard it said that smaller hats/hair decorations, worn as the opposite of large or formal headwear (and usually in different social circumstances), were intended to ‘fascinate’ potential admirers, hence the moniker.

Huge Kate fan but i think she’s playing it a little too safe. I’d like to see her branch out to real hats and brighter colors. She so rocked the deep red during the jubilee boat parade. I do wish she wore the scarf. Carrying it seems just a little too cutsie.

She does look good, but I would kill for some color! The yellow dress is nice, but I hate that she’s wearing a black clutch & shoes with it! How about turquoise, pink, plaid or gold?

LOL, I meant badass in a good way – as in no-nonsense, doesn’t take any sh*t from anybody etc. I’d definitely prefer Queen Anne to King Charles!

I happened to be there (not stalking, I swear) and was about 10 feet away as she and Wills drove by, and she really is just SO PRETTY. Also, the Queen has a gorgeous complexion. Love them.

Can I call pregnant? Does her face not look a little softer than usual in photo 2? I admit that “softer face = pregnant” is probably not actually a thing.

    Wills has deliciously large thighs.
