BAFTAs Well Played: Michelle Williams

well-played

This is custom H&M, which is a cute idea, and in fact, this whole look is quite cute:

This is right in her fashion wheelhouse, in terms of the color palette — she never met a black-and-white she didn’t like, other than perhaps the cookie — but THANK YOU H&M for wrenching the crew neck and the sleeves out of her clutches. Please let this change take, at least for a little while.

And now, let’s look at her bag:

Arthur Miller, in honor of Marilyn. A nice thoughtful touch, although I always sort of assumed she was miserable with him (in fairness, I am pretty sure I learned that from Lifetime, and I also think Marilyn may have just been miserable in general). Too bad it’s empty — it might be nice to have some reading material during an awards season.

I adore those Olympia Le-Tan book clutches! I really want The Catcher In The Rye and Lolita versions, they’re gorgeous!

  2. Lindy

I do love the bag and appreciate that she isn’t wearing ANOTHER crewneck, but, honestly, this dress is just boring. Beige doesn’t tend to flatter blondes and this is doing her coloring no favors.

    • kersten

Agree. This dress makes me want to fall asleep.

      • Jules

I’m waiting for her to either take my order or tell me if my seats are in orchestra or balcony.

  3. Beth

Also, she’s totally cheating and “evoking” a crew neck with that necklace. Like she couldn’t bear to leave the house without a little circle around her neck. Next thing she’ll just be drawing them on.

  4. Hel

    Custom H&M? What is that?

  5. Billie

    Baby steps, Michelle. Baby steps.

  6. Girlin

Lovely. She looks happy and the overall impression I get is of an elegant lady off to the opera! I think the bodice of the dress is really nice in the slight bit of detailing and there seems to be more honey to her hair than usual? Could just be the lighting though! Well done Michelle!

  7. Sophie

h+m makes custom gowns? why dont they make one for me, that i could actually afford. i didnt like the flower in the big picture but close up it looks quite pretty.

  8. Kit

she looks great and I like this a lot on her, but I’m not loving the shoes…

  9. vandalfan

I’d have gone with a slightly lighter lip color, but I’m so glad she’s not looking like she’s 13 years old. Gamine hair does not always have to come across as childlike.

  10. Helen Roper

    *zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*

I cannot believe this is the same woman who wore crimson lips and that delectable mustard Vera Wang a few years ago.

    • neiges

Exactly? Where is Michelle Williams? This old lady has taken her place.

  11. Lynne

Gorgeous. I think I might have preferred a different necklace and I wouldn’t hate a pop of colour somewhere. But still. Gorgeous.

  12. Kristy

She looks lovely. Not super-exciting, but lovely. Also? She looks really happy. I think that helps.

  13. LoriK

I understand what people are saying about this being a bit of a snooze, but it fits her wonderfully and she looks good. Not to mention that not 2 weeks ago this woman went out in public wearing kissing clouds & sparkly rain. I’ll take slightly boring adult over fey elementary school child any day of the week.

    • cruzilla

And that was what she wore for her official Oscar portrait!

I think this is more of a “Better Played” than Well-Played”. I refuse to acknowledge any styling of her as great until she grows out her hair at least a little.

      • Chasmosaur

I’ve decided that she’s moved into her own category. Like SWINTONIAN or Helena-Bonham-Carter-ly Played, she is pretty much Michelle Williams-ly played.

Honestly, I’m just stoked she’s smiling and wearing something that fitted, instead of flowy or clingy.

  14. Dazie

Better than usual, but I just can’t get on the Michelle Williams float. *shrug*

    • Leelee

I’m with you there. Although I do appreciate that she is at least smiling – it makes me less inclined to fall asleep because of the sheer apathy she usually projects.

      • Franziska

My thoughts exactly. I also think that’s the reason her face looks fuller… her wide smile! Her fashion choices simply bore me. And her short hair.

  15. Kim

Never mind the clothes, I’m still upset about whatever she’s done to her face! I do love her look usually, especially her mod vibe – but can’t get past how she doesn’t look like herself anymore. The worst was last year’s oscars – her face looked frozen!

    • Mila

Kim! ! Thank you!! I was beginning to think it was just me who noticed the WTF that is now her face. Nobody else seems to be noticing it?!? Right around the time she changed her hair colour is when she did something really effed up to her face. Cheek implants? Fillers? Botox? I haven’t decided yet but I’m leaning towards cheek implants and botoxed forehead/eye area and this just makes me very, very sad. Very sad.

  16. Chelsea

I like this so much that I made audible sounds of happiness when I first saw it. I love it in general and I adore it on her. BEAUTIFUL.

  17. mary lou bethune

    Beautiful

  18. Khalesi

oh dear, this looks like a a dress my 16 year old cousin would were to a winter formal. And my little cousin would pick better jewelry too. At least MW looks happy

  19. Carl

The lipstick looks a little overapplied to me.

  20. openroses

If I’m not entirely mistaken, that looks like the book cover for The Misfits, or at least the puzzle pieces in the opening sequence of the movie. In that case, it’s not just in honor of Marilyn because Arthur Miller wrote it, but because he wrote it for her. What a great film: Montgomery Clift, Marilyn, and Clark Gable in his final role. Supposedly he died a few days after they wrapped, totally stressed because of Marilyn’s instability on set. That, and the fact that they had him roping calves in certain scenes.

They don’t make any of ‘em like they used to.

  21. guerra

better played for sure!! almost there!

  22. Patrick

Book? It looks like a DVD for The Misfits to me.

  23. Sajorina

She looks GORGEOUS! I love it! It’s something I’d wear myself, actually it’s close to a formal designer gown that I own & have worn before! I also love the makeup, the necklace & the clutch… JUST BEAUTIFUL! Plus, it’s so nice to see her smile!

  24. fritanga

Still boring, still oddly twee. Maybe the British are more forgiving.

All she needs are braids and freckles and she’d look exactly like Pippi Longstocking wearing lipstick (check the book).

Please, girl, ramp it up for the Oscars. Pick a flattering dress which falls somewhere between what’s suitable for a 12-year-old and something your 50-year-old mom might wear.

  25. ChaChaHeels

fritanga, I’m almost in agreement with you but I think Michelle has had her Pippi Longstocking moment already (the crying cloud Care Bear Dress, complete with Peter Pan collar and I swear she wore it with Mary Janes). I wouldn’t bet that she’s got it out of her system yet, as the Oscars are coming up and who knows what we can expect then.

This outfit: very understated and polished. I love that she’s actually smiling, not smirking; and I think the shoes were a bad choice. Otherwise, she certainly chose well and she looks good.

  26. CJ

Lovely. It’s not knock-your-socks-off like that yellow Oscars gown years ago, but it is grown up, it doesn’t look like it was made in 1967, it fits her beautifully and it is not nauseatingly twee. Not crazy about the necklace and the shoes look a little clunky, but considering how lovely this is overall, that’s getting picky. The clutch is a nice touch.

  27. Bambi Anne Dear

This is the best thing she’s ever worn. From recent memory at least…. Gorg!

  28. Liz

ummmm…..has anyone noticed what’s going on behind her? Is that Mr. Clooney? and what on earth is that woman he is talking to wearing? Is it a gown? Is it pants? wide leg ball gown PANTS? Someone help.
