Met Gala Fug or Fab: Cameron Diaz

“Wait. Where am I?”

“NO. Come on. They told me I was going to the first annual Salute to Gywneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford Oscar Dress of 2012. THAT’S WHY I’M WEARING THIS CAPE. I’m going to kill Stella.”

That being said:

Met Gala Fug or Fab: Miley Cyrus

Obviously, I picked this photo because it looks like she’s got a tiny traffic cop sitting on her shoulder. Beat THAT, Amanda Bynes:

All that being said, I kind of love this on Miley. No, I actually am coming down on totally loving this on Miley. This took BALLS, and I appreciate that she went there. Her hair is, obviously, insane and moderately hideous like this  — which is, as I noted in our piece for The Cut, actually more punk than a lot of things that happened last night. Listen, you guys are not going to like what I am about to say, but ever since she has cut her hair, I have been sort of into Miley. I think she’s turning into a kind of chic and interesting person, against SERIOUSLY MANY ODDS and also against a lot of public opinion. She still says (and wears) dumb stuff sometimes, but I can’t help but appreciate her for sincerely…you know. Trying.

Met Ball Fug or Fine Carpet: Gwyneth Paltrow

At least GOOP admitted she wasn’t even trying to go punk. You might ask, “Why even go then?” But you probably don’t turn down a Met Ball invitation. Especially if you’re Gwyneth Paltrow, you’ve got a movie out and a new cookbook, and you REALLY REALLY need to make up for last year’s hideous Prada apron with pockets that were constellations of horror.

In fact, even thematically, this feels like what she SHOULD have worn last year, given the Schiaparelli theme and the fact that pink was one of Elsa’s signature colors. It’s like her Step One of Fug’s Non-Anonymous was to make a visual apology for not paying any attention to the Prada until it was too late. But I’m not entirely sure this works on any other level — the cut is almost aggressively plain except for the strip of illusion netting, as if she used up all her wackadoo mojo on the Iron Man 3 events and this was all she could handle. I might have liked it better if it went bare instead of with sternum hose. And I ALSO think that, even though Gwyneth’s People Magazine Most Beautiful face is indeed great, maybe she needed something more up there than to look like she’s ditching out on the gala in ten minutes to go to the gym. Or punking out on it, I guess, which… how many times will we use THAT pun today?

Fugs and Fabs of Yet Another Gatsby Screening

Dude, a LOT happened this weekend. And the Met Ball is TONIGHT. Basically, we’re in a race against time, you guys. Strap in — for all I know, Nicolas Cage might show up with his head on fire (he won’t).

Fug or Fab: Nina Dobrev

I have noticed, in the last several months, that Nina Dobrev almost always stands at an angle when posing for photographs.

I am sure someone told her once something terrible like, “standing like that makes your [body part] look better” — note, all her body parts look fine all the time regardless of stance — and she just internalized it, or something. Much as is my theory about why Ginnifer Goodwin doesn’t smile on the red carpet. You are both fine JUST AS YOU ARE, ladies. (Even if I don’t always like what you’re wearing.) (Also, holy cow, Dobrev was amazing on last night’s Vampire Diaries.)

Speaking of what she’s wearing:

Fugs and Fabs: EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund Gala

Well, at least they’re there for a good cause — even if some of them DO look like they took a little dip in Lake Cray-Cray on the way over.
