Holiday Hats and Coats Well Played: The Royal Family

well-played

Is there a better way to slide back into a new year than admiring people’s hats? The answer is yes, but it involves gin. Let’s START with hats and ratchet up to booze if we still need it. We’ll be back posting as usual tomorrow, January 3rd. So put on your chapeau and enjoy the last day of the holidays!

That last photo is SO LOVELY. I loff it.

On a side note, I still have whiplash regarding how all of a sudden hose are more youthful than tights. I accept that it’s happened (sigh), but I have lived all my legwear life thinking of hose as an old lady thing. Alas, fashion.

    • katiecoops

I think Jessica meant that tights are more youthful than hose. Kate’s wearing black tights in the picture as opposed to those awful flesh-colored hose she’s worn before. But yes, that last picture is amazing. :)

      • AQ

Is that what Jessica meant? I thought she was saying that partially sheer black hose were more youthful than opaque black tights. Which I am on Team Miranda with—to me, partially sheer black hose are very Linda Evans in her prime, not what I think of as “youthful”.

      • Jessica

No, I meant that opaque tights are more youthful — my bad.

  2. Libby

I love the first hat on Kate, but it’s very Errol Flynn as Robin Hood (although his hat was green).

  3. laura

Anyone else wonders what does the Queen carry in her purse? I read some where that she always has it with her, for me this is the one royal secret I’d love to know. Forget the whole Diana conspiracy theories, just someone tell me what this woman has on her purse!

    • AQ

Tissues, lipstick, a mirrored powder compact, and a small leather notebook with an attached pen, per Norman Hartnell on an interview show while he was the royal couturier. Of course that was in the 1970s (Hartnell died in 1979), so Her Maj may have updated since then.

    • Crazy Cat Lady

I read somewhere that she uses her purse as a signaling device to her handlers. If she has it slung on the right arm, all is well, chip-chip, Bob’s your uncle, carry on. If she moves it to the other arm, it means one must extricate one’s self from this most horrid of situations, do be a dear and come rescue your Queen. Have the orchestra strike up a round of The Chicken Dance or pull the fire alarm or make an announcement that the chocolate fountain is open for business, just get one out of here.

  4. Carol

Well played indeed on all hat fronts … but Princess Eugenie’s coat appears to be a bad fit … throw the tailor in the Tower!

  5. Colleen

Miranda, I believe she was saying the tights are more youthful, not the hose.

And presuming that Will and Kate are planning their pregnancy, I expect they’d wait until after the Jubilee and the Olympics. That being said, I can’t wait to see her maternity clothes!

  6. tagatha

This is apparently something you don’t learn at English lessons (English not being my first language): what is the difference between tights and hose? I’ve kind of thought they are the same thing?

  7. Jules

Aww, they look so happy in that last picture! It’s nice to see such a famous couple able to appear genuinely relaxed in front of the cameras; they also look like everything around them stops existing when they’re paying attention to each other.

I like to think the Queen carries in her purse all the grandmother classics: boiled sweets, tissues, a grandma-pink lipstick, pressed powder and photos of her grandchildren.

    • Sarah

I was JUST about to comment with that. I didn’t get caught up in all the Royal Wedding hullabaloo, but god do I ship those two crazy kids like burning nonetheless. They just seem so delighted to be together– it warms my cynical old heart.

  8. Chasmosaur

I saw that last picture earlier this morning somewhere, and it absolutely made my morning. I always thought Princess Diana did right by the boys, making sure they had more contact with “the simple folk” (to quote Camelot). Both William and Harry always look more at ease – and willing to bust a move – than Charles and his sibs ever did in situations like those. Or maybe it’s just being happily married and knowing your wife has your back and puts up with all the baggage of her in-laws. ;)

And yes, I think The Duchess has put current pregnancy rumors to rest. I just thought when she refused the peanut paste, it was just an indication they were trying. I’m sure she’s got every piece of advice on conception and pre-natal care being shoved down her throat. “No nut products” is probably one of them.

  9. juanita

I just can’t stomach hats as they make everyone look SOOOOOOOOOOO middle aged and fusty. Tights need to be opaque as well! I always love our Queen but the others look RIDICULOUS!

  10. Robin

I’m coveting Camilla’s blue coat from photo 2. Never thought I’d be in that position.

    • AQ

Camilla has been having a much higher hit-to-miss ratio in the last year or so than ever before. New stylist, maybe?

  11. LoriK

“if Aretha Franklin’s Inauguration hat had a baby with a potsticker”

I love this sentence beyond all reason.

    • Chaiaiai

      Me too.

      • Eliza Bennett

Me three. I thought it couldn’t get funnier than “Prince wore this, like, yesterday, while eating a bagel and doing the splits” and then THAT happened. I wheezed and had to lie to my boss and say I burned my mouth on coffee.

    • Janet

I love the potsticker comment so much – it helps me understand why I am drawn to this site late at night like a moth to a candle…

  12. vandalfan

I’ll bet Her Majesty has some Werther’s Originals in there, too.
I’m sure the color is raspberry, but Prince would wear a beret, no?

    • Jessica

I’m sure Prince likes to mix up his headgear.

      • vandalfan

Yes, imagine him in flannel and ear flaps, a la The Great White North. Or a ten gallon stetson. Or a snood!

  13. lori

When I got to slide 8, I involuntarily said aloud, “HAIR.” Seriously, HOW do I make mine do that??

Slide 9 totally warmed my heart. It’s a little weird how much I love those two. I really, really, REALLY hope they have a long and happy life together.

    • Krusticle

Yes! That was my number one thought, too! How do I get that glossy shiny curly ringletty hair?!!! Maybe she has a painting in her attic of her with frizzy, freeze-dried, split-ends hair that takes all the abuse.

  14. Swellegant

I’m sure that Prince would just wear that to the grocery store, Christmas or not. I am also a Jehovah’s Witness and I would love to know what he wears when he goes door to door…lol. Can you imagine?

    • Jessica

I know, right? Can you imagine opening the door and it’s PRINCE? I do bet he has a very high chance of being asked inside.

  15. Sarah

That last picture was amazing! Not enough Harry in this slide show though…

  16. Sandra

I do think that walking around between William and Harry all the time has to be right up there at the top of A Girl’s List of WIN!

    • jean

Um, yeah. Let the love triangle fanfic begin! Don’t they look like a soap opera?

  17. Mariamax

I think Kate is going to need to eat a few sandwiches before she can get pregnant…seriously, she doesn’t have enough body fat right now.

  18. Liz

I laughed so hard at what you said about Zara’s hat that I snorted!

  19. Kitkatkatydid

I love all of those hats, and wish more people wore them. Over the summer I bought myself a classic grey fedora, and now feel oh-so-snazzy walking around campus in my fedora and grey woollen almost-trench coat.

I also love that Will is doing what my friends and I have dubbed “the white girl boogie”. White boy boogie?

  20. Jen

    # 9 – my fave Wills shot, EVAH.

Poor Queen can’t buy new shoes, with her money frozen and all…

and how about Prince C and Camilla in that photo? He looks like he’s really wondering why, exactly, did he think that second marriage such a good idea?

  21. Beth

I adore Beatrice for auctioning off her hat from the wedding. We were all sitting there making fun of the hat, then she pulls out that move and we kind of sit there a second before going, “Touche.”

  22. Mel

I dunno, I’m not a big fan of that colour on Kate – it’s very mature, the whole look, and she’s not yet 30, right? She’s got plenty of time to look mature. If she wore red it would be much more eye catching and fun, not to mention Christmassy! And all the other girls’ hats were much more fun, in comparison. But I guess she has to look mature, since she might be Queen one day!

  23. ceecee

Kudos to the Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie for dialing back the eye liner just a notch.

    And also, SCONES.

  24. Cecily

They are an enchantingly lovely couple, and she has impeccable taste and style. Loved the Prince commentary, yes, of course he would wear that to get a carton of milk. Also, that last shot, the way Kate is looking bemusedly at William, who is clearly enjoying his folly with the lady. LOVE!

  25. Lili@RelatableStyle

I think with the black gloves and black bag, the black shoes are quite alright on Liz. Bag and gloves would have looks off with lighter shoes :-)

  26. drbubbles

Kate’s hat looks like a 1970s pimp hat. I’m sorry, but it does. All it needs is a long feather.

  27. Brighty

At first look I thought Beatrice was wearing one of those hats with Mickey Mouse ears, but on a little bit of an angle. Maybe she visited Disney World for her Christmas vacation?

  28. Restaurant Bruges

nice and really a amazing styling

  29. Kirsten

The Queen always wears really clompy dark shoes; it’s a shame. Mind you, she’s the Queen, so she can do what the hell she wants. I think that Zara really looks like her mum in that photo. And that hat is terrible on Kate.

  30. Sajorina

#1) I’m traumatized/intrigued after reading that human remains had been found at the Sandringham property! Oh, the mystery… Oh, the suspense…
#2) I want to raid Kate’s closet! She was born to be a royal, she fits in perfectly and always looks amazing!
#3) OMG, Wills doing “the harlem”? AWESOME!!!
    #4) Happy New Year, FugGirls!

  31. Emma

I think the Queen always wears the exact same pair of black shoes. Seriously. She’s pretty old, so she probably feels secure in them.

Also, I think Kate is wearing opaque hose of late because it’s colder. I still like the sheer hose, and I think it’s time they came back into vogue. My generation missed out on their first iteration, so they seem really novel to me. The idea of sliding on a gossamer tube that instantly creates a smooth, tanned effect is sort of magical. I’m genuinely not a hosiery salesperson, I’m just really sick of the tyranny of leg-maintenance. And I’m pale, so decent legs always involve a lot of fake tan.

    • Mariamax

I also like hose. I feel secure, sucked in and less naked in them! But I’m old…like, over 40.

  32. Amy

Prince William is Church of England…

  33. Amy

augh… I should really read a post before posting myself…~sigh~

  34. Regina

I love love love that the Queen never goes anywhere without her purse, and I would love to see what she’s got in there.

  35. yeahandalso

Why can’t Beatrice always wear a rabbit eared vagina on her head?

  36. Cranky Old Batt

Prince dude looks like he can bust a move.

And Kate has TINY little hips. Like a twiggy Barbie doll.

  37. Ms. Chanandler Bong

I don’t think we’ll see a royal bun in the oven until after the diamond jubilee and the Olympics, this is the Queen’s year.

  38. Andrew S.

Kate looks lovely, as always, but that last photo is EVERYTHING! XD

    WERK, WILLY!!!

  39. Scanderoon

I just had to say I loved all of the commentaries on this slideshow. All of them. I kind of wish Kate and Will read this site, because I think they would find them hilarious.
