Emmy Awards Fug Carpet: January Jones

It’s at least good for business that January Jones always tries to use the red carpet to make A Big Statement, because fortunately for us, her statements all come out in pure Gibberish.

Unfortunately, I forgot to plug in my translator last night. I’m getting SOMETHING about a hostage drama, gaffer’s tape, Bed Bath and Beyond, a ballet, an evil doppelganger, and the phrase, “Sorry, but it’s not going to be done in time.” What could it all mean?

I wish the top continued into a column. I can’t tell exactly how sheer it is but if it’s NOT super sheer that could be lovely. That skirt is just…no. And her hair is too severe. Veronica Lake hair works better on her.

I thought she was Evan Rachel Wood for about fifteen minutes last night. And I was like, what’s ERW doing at the Emmys – True Blood wasn’t nominated for anything.

Her hair looks disgusting. I might like the dress if the top weren’t sheer (why, God, why?!).

Call me crazy, but I don’t hate this. The hair – kinda yuck, yes, but I enjoy the shaping of the skirt. Anyone? Bueller?

I actually love the effect of the skirt – it’s the bodice I hate. It looks like a very fancy Ace bandage. A solid-black strapless bodice – or even a full column, like Laura suggested – with that skirt would be amazing.

It’s interesting, it’s dramatic, it fits, she has the body for it – love it!

Me too. I love it! All of it.

I agree–this wouldn’t work on just anyone, but I think it works on her.

Or maybe so many of her dresses have veered off into crazytown that this one looks acceptable to me in comparison.

But no, I think I kind of like it.

I love it, too! It’s different, it’s dramatic. It does fit her very well.

There were shots of her from different angles, and the dress looked gorgeous. Also, on a zoom-in, the face and hair make much more sense.

Agreed. Skirt is beautiful. Bodice not so much.

I love the dress! Say what you will about JJ, but she’s always interesting on the red carpet.

Her hair and makeup are a miss, though, but at least she’s going for the drama.

I believe the statement she was making is “Check out my Rooney Mara halloween costume”!

With different hair and a necklace, I would like this a lot.

I actually love the dress. I hate her hair and makeup, though.

Dress is interesting, I don’t hate it. But the hair and makeup are a different story – I didn’t even realize it was JJ.

i think the hair is a little severe, but other than that, i think she looks great.

I like this! It is much better than the prom dresses some others were wearing. I am not sold on the hair makeup.

I think this is actually one of the better dresses she’s worn (remember the lizard-eye boobs dress she wore to the Met Ball? Yeesh). I think she looks pretty well-dressed for a change. I’m not sold on the platform-y shoes with it though.

I actually liked this – her makeup is very reminiscent of Cate Blanchett. And in fact, I’d wager if this were being *worn* by Cate, everyone would give it a thumbs up.

I love the dress! – Hate the rest.

Why that one stupid wisp of untucked hair? Nonsense. I know it was hot on the red carpet, but that looks almost deliberate.

I really like this. It’s dramatic and she pulls it off

If you hadn’t told me that was January Jones, I’d never have known. But then, I feel that her face needs to be moving for me to recognize her anyway, it’s very strange. But I do like the dress. Not so much the hair and shoes.

  16. Lori

I’ll tell you what it means: “way to wreck a killer unusual dress with a terrible severe comb over and a bad dye job.”

  17. Bonnie Klein

As others, I like the dress and think she has the body (if not the personality or presence) to carry it. The hair and makeup though are awful. It is astonishing how pinched and ugly a beautiful woman can be made to look with a little work.

    • pidget

I second that. The dress isn’t terrible, but somehow she looks like she got interrupted in a game of dress-up in someone’s closet. So unfinished – don’t the shoes look like she just stepped into them, and they’re not really hers? She can aim for regal/ edgy, but it requires OWNERSHIP.

The gym-hair with the wisp is the devil. I agree that Veronica Lake waves (or some deliberate style) would sort out many of the issues, along with better footwear.

I also like this dress…. its interesting. The hair though??? Hell no.

  19. Rebecca

I’m glad others like this, too, because I think it looks really cool. And much better than some of the other ‘edgy’ dresses she’s attempted in the past. Agree that the hair and makeup are terrible, though.

Immediate first thought on this dress: Great start, lousy finish.

I don’t think this deserves a Fug at all. It’s a much more interesting dress than most of the others, it’s actually pretty, and she’s pretty in it.

I usually don’t enjoy her, but I actually think this is a good look for January. She pulls off the dress and the styling, it doesn’t look like she’s playing dress up. It works for me.

I unabashedly love that dress, but she doesn’t have the gravitas to pull it off. And the hair and makeup were so tragic that I don’t even have words. Evan Rachel would have rocked this hard.

I’m confused. She is smiling. Are we sure that’s January Jones?

I’m weirdly neutral on the dress, but I completely agree that her hair and makeup look terrible.

The dress bothers me less than most things she wears. But her hair and make-up are doing her no favors. It’s like she went for Severe and Angular and ended up at Slick Taylor Momsen.

I don’t know, I thought this was one of the better things she’s ever worn. I wonder sometimes if being JJ doesn’t already lend people to thinking her outfit is going to be absolute crap in the first place. This was not my favorite but it was interesting, and the shape wasn’t bad (and it wasn’t revealing most of her body). *shrug* I’m good with it.

I’d like the bodice with a plain skirt, or the skirt with a plain bodice.

JJ is really pretty, and I like the goofiness that peaks out of her super-serious persona. I want her to find a style that coheres and flatters. She hasn’t found it yet. She likes drama, classic glamour, and sexiness, and I see where she was going with this mostly average dress and horrible, horrible hair and makeup. What she should do is sit down and concentrate on the elements of this look that she likes, and then figure out how to edit it and tailor it more with her own looks, proportions, and personality. You can do it JJ!!

From the neck down, love it. I wish someone would hug her, though, and tell her she can have pretty hair and face and not be confused with Betty.

I’m totally fine with the dress, but her hair/make-up was a disaster. she has SO MUCH to work with – amazing body/face/hair (usually) – why do this?

  36. sarah

i think this is kind of awesome. i mean, it’s weird, but thank god for weird. it’s better than boring! the accessories (or lack of) and headsuit could use a tweaking, but from the neck down i’m really enjoying this.

I dig the skirt a lot. The bodice is too much, but its so much better than the blue mullet she wore a couple years ago.

The skirt has possibilities, but the rest is forgettable.

I quite like the dress, but I want the headsuit changed, beginning by removing the Juliette Lewis eye makeup.

I love her make-up and hair in this photo. She doesn’t look so ice-goddess for once. It’s kind of refreshing. I don’t think I like the white blond hair on her. Elizabeth Moss can keep it. Of all the actresses on this show, I think she’s the most typecast by her “look”, so good for her to try to shake it up.

  41. mepe

I don’t hate it but for some reason I always feel like she’s trying to hard…which is weird because I don’t know her and by now these over top dramatic dresses must be “her”. But I totally agree with the reviewer who thought she was Even Rachel Wood!

It is a Zac Posen dress but it reminds me the Donna Karan dress from last year. Look at that. http://bit.ly/tFFPtA

Love it! Architectural, unusual, and yet figure-flattering. Although I find you both hilarious, I wonder if you’re sometimes too conservative!

Such an elegant silhouette and such a disappointment with the sheer ‘spots’ but how lovely it would have been in a redhead-enhancing color and far, far less sheer. And random. And her hair…too severe. She’s too pretty to hide her red hair like that.

  45. LindenLovesFashion

Am in complete agreement with making the bodice non-sheer. I like the skirt. I do.

I LOVED this look. I know the hair and make-up were too severe, but it went with the dress. She looked like she just hopped off the runway after almost forgetting about the Emmy’s. This look wasn’t made for smiling, which of course was required of her otherwise she’d be THAT girl (and let’s face it, homegirl’s reputation already isn’t the greatest…). But look how striking the hair, make-up, and dress are when given the blue steel treatment:

    It actually looks good.

I thought I was crazy; I love this dress too! I wished she had worn it with some emeralds though. How do these well known actresses not have jewelry stores lining up to bejewel them??

  50. Louisa

She looks great. It’s just that it doesn’t look like the bust area is the same on both sides and it’s a little disturbing. I does look a bit like they needed another day to work it out, but didn’t have it.

  51. Helen

I think the bodice needs to be better fitted (mainly, make it sit about two inches higher) but it’s interesting, and overall, I like it.

    Cleopatra eyes flatter no woman.
And what’s with that stray hair lock on my right? Did it just escape? Point is – the hair is bad.

  53. Tracy

I just want to know why her horrible hair dye was sleeked a cheap red in the front and then the tight bun in back was a bad blond?? That coiffed hot-mess combined with the deathly eye make up made for a real doozy. Betty Draper would be mortified.

  54. Lori

She tries too hard to not look like her character. She tries too hard to be edgy and it just doesn’t work.

I loved this. It’s edgy and artistic.
