ESPY’s Fug Carpet: Maria Sharapova

I was on board with this — the color is so swell on her! — until I actually SAW IT. Which is kind of how I felt about Magic Mike.

Nooo! I love Magic Mike! Don’t malign the delicious!

    Yes, that dress is awkward.

Oh, so close to good. That’s almost more painful to look at than a total disaster.

Did she buy this at the costume department auction when they shut down “Spartacus”?

Somebody didn’t pay enough attention when watching Gone With the Wind. Maria, sweetie, listen up: We make our dresses out of the velvet drapes in the drawing room, not the sheers from Miss Melanie’s dressing room.

I can’t even see the dress because I’m so focused on the hot mess that is her hair.

And still she’s wearing more than Lady Gaga was in the previous post. And this one doesn’t involve any electrical tape. The glass is half full?

I love the look Jenny Finch is giving her. “Girl, I don’t know about this.”

Is it wrong that I still kinda like it?

So… do you think she knew it was sheer? Or do you think she’s gasping along with the rest of us when she sees that last picture?

    Oh, she knows.

the ironic thing is I can see her bra… I do love the color.

I like it! I’m not seeing anything indecently showing here, just a lot of leg, and hey, if you’ve got legs like that… fine by me! It’s well constructed, well fitted, and the color, of course, is wonderful.

totally agree.. i’m not mad at sheer just because its sheer..esp if u couldnt tell at first glance..

Agreed! I love the cut of this. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I know it’s very Grecian, but she’s a strong, powerful, female athlete, so it’s quite appropriate. Plus, it’s really flattering. And while usually this amount of sheer runs the risk of looking very cheap and tawdry, this really doesn’t. The fabric doesn’t read cheap and you can’t see anything beyond a PG rating. Love the color also.

      Not loving the hair, though.

I have trouble signing off on the neckline though. As a fellow woman with shoulders like a linebacker (and sadly not from earning millions on the tennis circuit) one has to be very careful with halter-type necks as they reallycan emphasise and are quite unflattering on broad shoulders.

And yes, the hair is atrocious.

Agreed! If I was M.Shar, I’d be flaunting it too, frankly.

Oops – I meant that I agreed with Helen and Ayelet, in that I like it.

I just would like to put a resounding AMEN out there in response to the Magic Mike comment…um yes, everyone looked delicious but the movie itself was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. I would gladly have just watched an hour of them performing at the strip club. The rest, total crap.

Yeah I have to agree with Lauren, Jessica and others re: Magic Mike. We saw it last night, and while the dancing/stripping scenes were enjoyable, the movie as a whole was just god-awful. Cody Horn (?) the sister, sucked. “I’m a boring grouchy girl that never smiles, so the hottest guy in Tampa will surely be dying to date me”. WTF?!

I’d definitely go see Bring it On: Male Strippers On Parade.

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Magic Mike. They should have made it a male stripper version of Bring It On, not a “serious” expose into the underworld of Tampa stripping. Ugh.

However, I actually don’t totally hate this dress. The color is pretty and I know you can see her whole leg, but it looks pretty fantastic. Maybe I am just jealous because I don’t have good legs…

“male stripper version of Bring It On”….I am prepared to put my life savings into making that happen.

I’m not bothered by this. It’s very pretty, and the colour is nice on her, and you can’t see any more than you could if she was in a relatively modest swimsuit. In the closeup, it’s clear that the bodice of this little number is fully lined, so you AREN’T going to see any more. You can see her legs. Big deal. At least it’s much more proportionate than most of the current crop of starlets parading around in tunic shirts as though they were full-bore dresses. Legs haven’t been indecent for decades.

I kid you not when I tell you that as a child in 1976-77, I remember seeing Toni Tennille wear this same dress on an episode of The Captain and Tennille Show on TV when she sang “Muskrat Love” with David Soul.

Tony Tennile sang “Muskrat Love” with David Soul???!!! I must find this on youtube!

(Also, did you know she and the Captain performed that song at the White House? Hilarious!)

I was joking about her singing it with David Soul but he was a guest on the TV show. That said, if she really HAD performed it with him — or any other ’70s star — it soooo would’ve been in THIS dress.

I love the expressions of the women around her – on the red carpet one, the background lady is totally saying “OMG, you can TOTALLY see through her dress”; and in the pic where she’s sitting, the woman beside her is saying to her friend “Holy unflattering sheer dress! AWKWARD.”

I know we’re not really supposed to comment on bodies, but wow, those are some shoulders. Apparently dedicating your life to sport really helps with the toning.

Dress is a hot mess – too bad, she’s so pretty.

The sheer fabric is dangerous enough, but in the third photo, her left foot is firmly placed on the dress’s hem, indicating that when she stood up, all doubt may have been removed regarding whether or not there are hotpants involved! Next photo frame, please!

Yikes! That said, I actually like this dress aside from sheery sheer sheerness that is going on with the skirt.

  21. Lisa

I don’t mind this. Her arms look so powerful, and let’s face it, this sheer is sooooooo much better than the sheer/hotpants mess we’ve been seeing for far, far too long! I am hoping for some sort of hotpant lining happening near the good china though….

The thing about sheers and laces: You stand bedecked in front of your mirror at home and everything seems perfectly respectable. Then outside, the light comes from behind you a la Princess Di, or — so much, much worse — someone hits you with a camera flash and all your lingerie or lack thereof lights up like a Christmas tree.

I disliked this even before I saw the sheer leg curtains. The fabric is reminiscent of the ubiquitous mid-90s broomstick skirt and the horizontal rope/piping across the bust (and under her armpit) is doing her boobs no favours. They appear to be pushed really far down her torso. The whole thing looks wrinkly and awkward.

Do not pull on the boob rope! DO NOT PULL ON THE BOOB ROPE!

Other than the shoulder seams and her dreadful hair, this looks fine to me. She’s wearing a bra, and has legs worth revealing. I’m interested in what it looks like from behind. If her crack or thong is visible, my vote changes.

I just want to say how much i love Carlos Bocanegra and his face in the background of whatever is going on in picture #3.

The color is amazing, but the phrase “shirred sheer”, while one of my favorites, should not result in a dress.

  31. Caz

I don’t know about the dress. I’m too distracted by the hair and the bad posture.
The colour is a bit bleak to me, but then again I do hate blue on blondes. Especially light blue.
Stinks a bit of cinderella. The hairdo does NOT help.

That dress, on long lovely Maria, is beautiful. Don’t be such an old fuddy duddy.

LOL !! That’s exactly how I feel about Magic Mike! The dress is so much better, a little odd maybe, but the colour is gorgeous and she does have great legs (I’m totally jealous). The dress does not make me feel like I need a shower with lots of soap and disinfectant.

Love it – great hair, great make-up & a great frock in a colour that so works on her & that sublime, lean athletic body. Love it!

I quite like this dress and she certainly got the legs to go with it. But her hair… what did she do to her hair? It’s in dire need of a brush.

I was too distracted by Carlos Bocanegra in the background in the third picture to even notice her. Boca Boca!
