Fug Madness 2010, Round One Continued: Bjork Bracket

(1) LEIGHTON MEESTER vs. (16) ELISABETH MOSS

La Meester worked really hard this year to ditch the Blair Waldorf persona and adopt one of Lady Solangaga Perry. The one picture I DESPERATELY want to print here is the one I can’t legally use. It’s this one (go to slide #3, if it doesn’t take you there automatically). LEIGHTON. HONEY. Those pants look like she had several terrible lady accidents and one awkward encounter with watercolors.

I can, however, show you this:

Those pants are kind of half-Waldorfian, half-Jenny Humphrey — it’s like what Blair would counsel Little J to wear the night she loses her virginity: Just wrap up your crotch like the precious gift it is, but in leather, to preserve the Jenny Humphrey “It Should Have Been Me In The Runaways So I’m COMING FOR YOU, FANNING” aura.

Right now, SWINTON is all, “Why is the Gossip Child wearing my pajamas?”
Leighton is facing off against Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss, who is new to this tournament, and doesn’t even have an archive on this site yet (although she’s appeared a few times). Elisabeth is here primarily because she made us sad at two awards shows. First, the Emmys:
Too dowdy for a girl in her twenties. We saw this and the sound our brains made was that of air spitting its way out of a balloon. And then on Golden Globes night, the same thing happened:
At the time, Jessica wrote that Moss’s boobs seemed insufficiently cantilevered, and it’s true. Unless she was hiding a baby bump — and that jury is still out, I think, for a tiny bit longer — this does nothing for her. I don’t love the bodice that’s designed to look like it’s falling off; it just comes off like the dress itself seems half-hearted about why it’s there. 
So Leighton’s and Elisabath’s are definitely two different realms of fug, but it all comes back to the fact that they’re two lovely young girls who aren’t doing their inherent loveliness any favors. Can the #16 topple the #1?

(8) DIANE KRUGER vs. (9) KIMBERLY WYATT

To celebrate Inglourious Basterds, Diane Kruger apparently decided to dress like the inglorious bastard hybrid of a groomsman, a cater-waiter, and Paula Poundstone:

To celebrate the fact that by hanging around in London for an eternity people are finally starting to figure out which Pussycat Doll she is (because those London tabs, bless them, will run photos of anyone), Kimberly Wyatt dressed like the bastard hybrid of Dylan McKay, Brenda Walsh, and Ferris Bueller:

But let’s see how they fare side-by-side, in shiny tactile minidresses:
Hmm. They both look a bit like a Super Bowl victory parade. And there’s so much more in their archives (linked to above under their names), from Diane’s Oscars dress that’s akin to a wastebasket overflowing with tissues, to Kimberly’s blanket-shirt, to… well, I could go on forever, but if I did, then so would this post.

(4) BAI LING vs. (13) SIENNA MILLER

Remember when we thought Bai Ling, winner of Fug Madness 2008, was giving up the life of a demi-nude sprite in favor of trying to get actual industry respect (chiefly because her publicist more or less told us so)? Well, she’s not.

Like, not at ALL:
Instead, Bai is working bravely to discover ways in which residents of warm climates can safely wear giant faux-fur throws made of popular Sesame Street characters. And if she doesn’t do this research, nobody will. I wonder if Matthew Lesko, the dude from the infomercials who wears suits made of question-marks, taught her all about how to get government money to do this. Bless that man.
But those shenanigans are all well and good when you’re Bai Ling, and your entire reason for being is getting photographed in a series of shocking ensembles. What if you are Sienna Miller, and you are trying to be a respected actress and fashion icon? Should you really be wearing something Bai Ling herself probably would covet?
Or this?
Maybe it’s a career move. I mean, if Cate Blanchett can play Bob Dylan, why not Sienna Miller as David Bowie?

(5) DRUNKFACE MCCORD vs. (12) KE$HA

It’s such poetry that these two have been united in Fug Madness, because while Drunkface will always be the original and best of her drunkfaced ilk…

And what the hell is up with her hair? It’s two parts Stevie Nicks, two parts Angela from Who’s The Boss?, and a dash of a Top Model contestant after Tyra gets her neon claws into the poor kid’s coif.
Ke$ha and Drunkface also share a fondness for tacky animal print. The former prefers to work it with a cane, crazy eye makeup, and fringe, like if Lady Gaga were to become a pimp:

Perhaps we have made a beautiful love match here today. But that doesn’t make your job any easier.

    The others, like Drunk Face, are doing it accidentally, which is much more fug.

    on Moss v. Meester there can be no contest. Elisabeth gives the impression that she’s so pre-occupied filming critically acclaimed television, marrying Fred Armisen and generally being brilliant that she just puts on any old thing someone hands her.

    Meester on the other hand is clearly expending a great deal of effort which we all know, of course, frequently leads to the worst fug of all.

    Also, voting for Ke$ha would force me to accept her existence. I’m just not prepared to do that.

    Hahaha! Yes, Kesha’s hair does look like the Goblin King’s. I had to give her the win based on hair alone. It’s strange how my criteria changes. I fugged Gaga even though what she is doing is trying to wear art. But I let Krug off the hook because I feel like she’s going for an artistic, haute couture look. Pussycat Doll just looks trashy next to her. Bai vs Sienna was tough, but Sienna’s always so smug. At least Bai knows she has a kooky fashion sense. Sienna always thinks she looks marvelous.

    As completely kooky as Diane Kruger often looks, I just couldn’t vote for her. She can pull off absolutely insane things in a way that most people just can’t. She often shows up with Pacey. She occasionally shows up looking completely gorgeous and beautifully put together. And at least she’s never boring.

    For the first time ever I voted against Diane Kruger for something. Diane is flawless even when she’s flawed and she is my favourite fashionista of all time ever! And yes, I even like the suspenders and her Oscars gown, I did a whole post of my own about that Chanel. I love her and her look!!

    I actually saw Bai Ling at an event last evening and she radiates sweetness (and is so teeny tiny!). She was wearing a black, perhaps, pantsuit, along with huge mirrored aviators. It was an extreme outfit (leather? pleather?) but not outrageous. Just saying.

You know how, when you are deciding what you want for lunch, and you ask someone else, so that when they tell you you can go, “No, that doesn’t actually sound good.” That’s what I did with my vote. And now, reading these comments, I realize I have made a big mistake, in encouraging New Drunkface. Because obvs she isn’t TRYING to look good, she’s just going for attention!     First thing. Kruger is not Fug. Evidence to support, A: The Famous Mustard Dress at the Golden Globes (mustard is not my condiment, but daaaaammmn, WANT). B: Her ultimate accessory, PACEY WITTER. He is *definitely* my condiment. Want want WANT.

    I am all about the Meese. Young lady, YES. This is how it’s done. You are young and somewhat famous and you have a bit of money, not all the money in the word (see: MADONNA) but enough to buy things … and THIS is what happens.

    Girl is really generating that “God, what was I thinking?” stuff we all count on to spice up our later years. Good job, Meese!

    BTW, this is also what I love/hate about Drunkface (just “Drunk”, in my brackets). She’s the kind of mess you can only be at that age when everything, even rank stupidity, looks good on you.

    Even I have to address the sad little famewhore (“oh God, I want to be Gaga so bad. Do you think putting a dollar sign in my name would do it?”), at this point. First of all, her name is just Kesha. If it helps you to think of bland cereal, try that.

    Second, the rules of positive discipline require that we let her just go through this phase, without intervention or punishment. Attention can only harm her at this point.

    Kesha will be okay. Know that. True, we shouldn’t have let her out.

    Just like the girl in “The Ring”: some people just need to be heard …

    Then I had a Crisis of Fug. I’m always torn between Fug as Celebration of the Gorgeously CrayCray, and Fug as Fail. My votes went all over the place:

    Diane Kruger, because I adore her and all that she wears. So joyful. And who is that Pussyperson anyway? Just tacky.

    Then I veered away from my much-beloved Bai and and voted for Sienna, whom we all agree is trying too hard and things she looks GREAT. Feh.

    For the Battle of the Drunkfaces, I felt compelled to hide the faces and vote the clothes and hair. And then, ew, Kesha. That zebra bodystocking thing. Ew.

    Can i just say that Diane has been looking particularly witchfaced on the awards carpets lately? Such a nasty look when one has yummy arm candy like Pacey. So sad.

    Also, looking at the pictures of bai in all her sesame street fuzzy apparel, I was reminded of yesterday’s picture of Lady Gaga in that yellow thing costume thing and I thought “Bai would totally have used that yellow rug as a wrap”.     I completely unironically love some of Leighton Meester and Kimberly Wyatt’s outfits. They’re genuinely weird clothes, and that seems so fun to me. I voted their fug as supreme, but that doesn’t mean I think their style sucks; it means I think risks are important and that fashion would totally suck without weirdness.

    Plus, if the final brackets are full or boring crap, I am totally going to die.

    This bracket made me get all philosophical about my fug. Bai won because of my love for her (and, let’s face it, outcrazying Sienna Miller). On the flip side of the coin, I really wanted to vote for both Diane Kruger and Original Drunkface because I enjoy their fug and would have liked to see them advance. But…DAMN. Ke$ha and Kimberly look truly, terribly, kinda revoltingly, can’t-be-denied-or-ignored fug. So many emotions in Charo this year.

Seriously? #2 Wyatt is nothin’ but all awful, all the time, and Diane had her moments. #3 No mere human can withstand the nuclear cray-cray of Sweet Bai and Bai, although I miss the band-aid messages on her shins.     BAI VS. SIENNA: You know what? This was hard for me. I mean, I love me some crazy Bai, and I can forgive a woman who spent time in a labor camp in China. After that kind of crap, you should be able to wear whatever crazy that you want. Sienna, however, is held up as some kind of fashion icon, and I am sorry, but I don’t think so. Sienna for the win.     DRUNKFACE VS. KE$SHA: I went with Drunkface for her crimes against breasts (support those suckers! I don’t care how small they might be!), and because I refuse to give Ke$sha any attention. Maybe next year for her.

    Back in Sensei Karurosa’s Naruto Shippuden in Japan there was a boy named Naruto Shippuden. Naruto Shippuden was seven years younger than I was. He was also my brother. Unfortunately for Naruto Shippuden, he was quite awful at the martial arts. It wasn’t due to a lack of effort, simply a lack of God given talent. He was so bad that his nickname was “Bloody Pulp”.

    Eventually Naruto Shippuden grew tired of getting the stuffing beat out of his little round body. He still loved the Naruto Shippuden though and everybody adored Naruto Shippuden and didn’t want to see him leave. So one day, Sensei Karurosa handed Naruto Shippuden a clipboard. He was to be a judge in a Naruto Shippuden tournament! Naruto Shippuden was a natural. Although much younger than the other judges he was clearly the most consistent. Armed with his clipboard he would note points and violations better than anyone else.

    Just a week before we were to move back to NY our Naruto Shippuden held its annual tournament. This was based on skill level and age. With Robutaku and Sutebe gone, I dominated the 15-18 age group tournament, reaching the finals with ease. My opponent for the finals was Haruki Naruto. Naruto was possibly the best fighter of the Naruto Shippuden, but he was also quite reckless and often lost his focus.

    It was a match to 10 points and I was losing 9-7. However, Naruto had 2 out of bounds faults. One more and he would be disqualified. I knew I had to be aggressive. I charged Naruto and he lurched sideways.

    “FAULT!” screamed Naruto Shippuden, pointing at Naruto’s right foot.

    I had won! Oh boy, Naruto was furious. He attacked Naruto Shippuden, only to be stopped by Sensei Karurosa.

    “This is bullshit!” Naruto pleaded, “I never went out of bounds!”

    “I’ll get you, you little fucker!” he screamed, pointing at Naruto Shippuden.

    Sensei Karurosa completely trusted little Naruto Shippuden though and I was awarded the trophy. We moved back to NY a few days later with no incident.
