I can’t decide where the heck I think Madonna is going.
If I had to guess, I’d say she’s on her way to a yacht owned by the Mother Superior of an incredibly old Italian convent, who also happens to be the nation’s leading authority on granny panties. But it’s as likely she’s being thrown in a dank underground brig for crimes against fabric. I’m pretty sure we would’ve had to watch a telethon about that, though.
It may seem unfair to pit poor little semi-anonymous Melody Thornton of the Pussycat Dolls against a musical force of nature like Madonna, but they have more in common than you might think:

How else to explain this curtain with a pony-tail? Ginnifer is clearly trying to beat The Sev at her own game, the rules of which are, “Outwit, outplay, outperplex.”
Perhaps Ginnifer even covets a nickname in Sev-esque shorthand. I wish I could help, but as much as we love the letter z, “The Goodz” just doesn’t work for me. With that outfit, though, Ginnifer is at least well on her way to iconic wackitude. Have a gander at her archive and at The Sev’s, and decide which woman will survive to ply her wares in Round Two.

Jessica and I decided that their celebrity couple name-compression should be Arqane, for two reasons: One, because they break so many laws of common sense in clothing, that they might as well break the “qu” spelling rule as well; and two, “arcane” means “mysterious, secret, obscure; understood by few,” and I think that pretty much defines what is going on in both this photo and about 99 percent of their other ones. WEAR SHOES ON NASTY SIDEWALKS, PEOPLE. FOOT FUNGUS IS AMERICA’S SECRET KILLER.

I’ve decided that Fergie and Leigh Lezark would make great besties, as they have so much in common. They could brush each other’s hair, talk about cheekbones, and borrow each other’s clothes. Like, I am certain the questionably famous Lezark would love borrowing this:
And Fergie would be all, “Sweet, then let me take the thing where you look like you squeezed into the ringmaster’s sleeve when he officiated the Bearded Lady’s funeral.”
And Leigh would say, “If you take THAT then I’m going to need that bangin’ shorts-harness.”
To which Fergie would reply, “Sling me the Wonderbra GGG-cup vest with floral cape and see-through pirate shirt, and you are ON LIKE DONKEY KONG.”
See? A match made in Heaven. Alas, before we can bring them together, we must divide them.

Wow, that last match up with a doozy. I had to go back and forth for five minutes trying to figure out which one had the least vomit-inducing outfits. I still have voters guilt.
Yep – for me, that whole “intentional vs unintentional fug” thing is the big question every year. Should we reward people who are trying to look apesh!t crazy? (Gaga et al.) Or, is the fug crown to be given to those who think they are sartorially gifted and yet apparently don’t own a mirror to verify said claim?

Wow, that Fergie/Lezark showdown was surprisingly tough. I chose Leaigh because she dresses like a crackpot despite not all that famous. Fergie at least has that Celebrity Crazy pass. Plus, I get the sense that Fergie at least sweats around the house, while Leigh is wearing that Wonderbra-vest combo to run to the laundromat.
Damn, that is CLOSE on Fergie and Leigh. I really don’t even know what to say except it’s the only first-round matchup that isn’t a slam dunk.
I went with Leigh even though I’ve never heard of her. Fergie, as far as Fergie goes, wasnt THAT crazy this year…aside from her stage clothing.

Ginnifer is a good actress. She always looks at least presentable. And she was the best thing about “He’s Just Not That Into You”. But she can’t even touch the hem of the Sev’s Fug — which is now an art form, a way of life, even occasionally an adjective in these comments (“a sevigny look like that?”).

Finally, I don’t know who Leigh Lezark is. She doesn’t look happy that I don’t know. But her lack of even so much as one decent Fug is distracting me from the messages that Fergie’s occasionally-snarling midsection has been trying to send me … for YEARS.

Tough! Madonna because she has gone ’round the bend of late, and I cannot forgive the confessional grate/waffle mask and sheer lace as pants ever! Goodwin certainly puts in a noble effort but, again, bras are not tops, and the Sevfug works hard for her title on any given day, Ginnifer tries to get it right and sometimes does. The last one, ay yay yay, I nearly fell off my chair with first the hip slings on Fergie, then the granny boob [shrug?] of Leigh Lezark. That last outfit is 6 gallons of crazy, but I had to vote the Ferg because she’s been pouring it for longer. Fug Madness Rules!
Leigh should take the contest just on the basis of the GGG bra/vest/coat thingy alone! Come on people, that was so fug that I don’t know that I’ve ever seen worse! That one is no contest. As for costume fug, I tend to agree with Hepstyle, that costume fug shouldn’t count. BUT…Gaga wore a lobster on her head to EAT DINNER OUT WITH HER PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!!! Costume Fug is secretly awesome, to me, where IRL Fug is a cry for help OR a statement of obnoxious belief that a person has style when they clearly demonstrate otherwise.
All of these fug outfits together at once broke something in my brain.

Who on earth is Leigh Lezark? Do we really care if unimportant people Fug or not? I also have difficulty comparing those who Fug onstage to those who Fug for no good reason … seems like comparing apples and oranges. (Apples + oranges = Ick. Apples and pears = Yum. Must seek out flavored water now.)
I was undecided about that final matchup until I got to the picture of the bra vest. That was the clincher.

I agree. Those who are trying to be weird/wacky don’t count in my book. I vote for those who should really know better or who CAN do better, but just don’t. I voted – Madonna, Chloe, Amber, Leigh. Amber was my only deviation from my normal strategy because that girl is just too fug to ignore. It broke my heart to do it, though, because Patricia/Thomas are a fug force to be reckoned with.

Amber/Arqane- This one was so ridiculously hard. My first instinct was Amber, but darn it all, those Arqane’s give her a darn good run for her money. I have spent 30 minutes reviewing all the outfits and they are all such train wrecks but I had to give it to Amber.

I’m noticing that I’m giving a pass to a lot of people who wear wacky stuff(ala Gaga). The Fug that’s getting me down this year is the failure fugs – you know, like someone thought they were dressed pretty or thought they were dressed wacky but wound up just looking fuggy.

I’ve come up with a few supporting arguments, besides the obvious phonics:
- both are extremely pretty!
- both tend to enhance the quality of what they are in, without ever really seeming to take center stage (The Sev, if you will, is the lime to The Gin’s, um, gin)
- The Gin’s embarassing above fug matchup outfit could actually be a metaphor for one of my recent embarassing gin and tonic infused evenings(and I know I’m not the only one): at eight pm/shoulders, everything’s going along beautifully, if kinda wild. At nine/waist, both you and fabric have thrown caution to the wind and decided to behave in a somewhat unflattering manner — but you’re basically still ok. By 10/thighs, you can see that things are headed in a BAD direction. And by 11/ponytail, you’re headed straight for the floor.

Okay, Leigh and Ferg would be great friends and drinking buddies (clearly they’re drunk off their asses to be dressed as they are) but once again Fergie’s fug was more visible this year. Trust — Leigh brought it and brought it hard in terms of fug but her collection of fug this year was not everywhere like Ferg’s was. The Peas were ubiquitious this year and as go the Peas so goes Fuggie Fug. Fergie easily wins for me and I’m disappointed she is losing to a socialite (that what she is, right?)

Though it was a tough one, Leigh L wins for me over Fuggie Fug because (1) Neither of LL’s looks were stage costumes, (2) I’m not sure I’ve EVER seen an item of clothing as whackadoo as that GGGG vest/harness/lederhosen top thingy and (3) Fergie didn’t pee herself in public all year, and what’s the fun in that??
Originally I was hoping for an Arquane win all the way, but ultimately they only have a few entries in their archive. And despite the lack of shoes, Amber Rose just wore worse stuff.
That last match, boy howdy! I was really torn. The “Suessian finger hats” on Fergie *almost* got her my vote, but that horrible bra-vest-THING sealed the deal for me. Add in the white and black jumpsuit from hell, and it’s Leigh all the way. Fergie at least had a few passable outfits. Leigh… It literally recoiled from the screen more than once with her.

I really wanted to give Melody Whatsits some encouragement, but I don’t feel like I can vote for someone who doesn’t have a Fug Tag of her own – it’s like she’s just not trying hard enough. I actually went to school with Thomas Jane and he lived in my neighborhood. He was very much a lanky, tall guy. Who knew he’d become a famous actor sporting quite a horrific beard. As proud as I am of Thomas (or as we liked to call him “Tommy”) I gotta give it to Amber Rose. Maybe next year.

At first glance I thought each of these was going to be a tough choice but in the end it came down to fugly but unfuggable versus trash dressing. In my dotage I’m finding myself less accepting of unnecessary flesh exposure. As a costume, it’s fine. Mads v Melody, at least if Mel did up her jacket she would just look a little silly. But Mads, that’s just plain hideous. Even with the kickass bod she still has.

Even though it’s Madonna and she can do what she wants, and has been dressing like this long enough to have an entire bracket named after her so why would she stop now?- I still voted for her b/c Melody who? That’s what I thought.
As nasty as Arqane’s bare feet + peasant skirt is, Amber Rose is wacked.
Also wacked is Fergie, in a much more atrociously fugly way than the trying-too-hard edginess of Leigh Lezark.
Although Madonna has worn a lot of horrible things this year, I sometimes side with her even when the Fug Girls don’t — so I had to go with the Pussycat Doll. They just try way too hard and NEVER hit, whereas Madonna’s personal brand of kook often suits her.
There is no beating the Sev. Even where outfits are comparably fugly, Sev somehow manages to look 2 days overdue for a shower in every photo.
That Arqane photo kind of makes me want to hurl, but Amber Rose is too special not to win. Unlike GaGa, she isn’t pursuing wearable art and she isn’t trying to be wacky, she’s just trying to live on the cutting edge of fashion and failing horribly.
Fergie and Leigh are a close call. On the one hand, many of her outfits actually look decent on her, they’re just weird or tacky. On the other hand, that droopy diapered bustier thing is going to haunt my mind’s eye until the end of my days. On someone else’s hand, the heinous thigh bags are a stage costume, where as Leigh’s inexplicable bra vest is just something she decided to wear out. Over what amounts to a sheer jumpsuit. TO FASHION WEEK. She clearly thinks she’s super fashionable, so, I say her Fug reigns supreme.
Had to go for Leigh against Fergie because although Fegie’s on state costumes are a big fug, she cleaned up really nicely for the red carpet so I see that she’s at least TRYING.
Agree with the last comment re: Sev who “always looks 2 days overdue for a shower…” thanks for putting that into words for me! Also she always looks TIRED.
whew! the latest photo of chloe sevigny was so bad (the too short and too shrunken outfit) that i was thinking i was going to have to hunt for her fug-off and VOILA! THERE IT WAS, BEFORE MY VERY EYES. thank you, thank you, i needed to vote her right out of my mind before the image lingered too long and maybe left an indelible impresssion..
i see a lot of people agree with my reasoning, which goes like this: Madonna should know better. Chloe should, too. Patricia Arquette is just a horrible dresser-while Amber Rose is basically a showoff, going for effect. Last one was the toughest but i gave it to Leigh-for the dayware white enormous bra. Fergie can wear some of her stuff because she is an entertainer, and does. I don’t know who this Leigh person is but it appears that she thinks she is truly stylish and avant garde.
*The latest fug photo of Chloe Sevigny had me searching for her in the matchups. It sealed her fate for me. Too black, too small. too Goodwill.
I don’t know who Leigh Lezark is, but she somehow manages to look exactly like both Robin Tunney and Alexis Bledel. How did that happen?
Well:
1. Clearly Madonna has to win at least one round in her own bracket.

3. That was a really tough one for me, even though Amber Rose is winning. I guess she’s going for fashionable, whereas Arqane is just trying to go for “being clothed”?
4. Lezark came out of nowhere, but I am sorry, nothing is going to be more damaging to my psyche than that shorts-getup of Fergie’s. It looks like it was made out of elephant skin and old tires.

All I can think about is tobacco. I don’t plan to take a drag and if anybody offered a hit today, I would not accept. I feel I’m in a very lousy mental state and have had trouble falling asleep but I understand I should turn out to be tough. The smokeless cigarette may also be helpful in the end.
