Fug or Fab: Abbie Cornish

fug-or-fab

Remember back in the day when Reese and Ryan broke up and it was (allegedly) because Ryan was canoodling with Abbie Cornish and she went out dressed like a nun most of the time, like she was wearing a sign that said, “I AM SORRY”?

Thank god we’re past that. For a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that it was kind of a ridiculous way for her PR to decide to handle that kerfuffle.  And also because she looks pretty great, and people looking great makes all the rest of us feel better. Unless they’re people that we hate, in which case…blinding rage, obviously. I am so gobsmacked to see her looking so va-va-voom that I’m not sure if this is ACTUALLY good or just a welcome change.

So please set me straight.

There are so many reasons I shouldn’t like this, but I DO. I love it!

    She looks awesome.

love it, but go up a size girl

I would like it a bit more if it didn’t have the mermaid tail. The pattern is quite nice and understated (albeit weirdly placed at times) but if this were knees’ length, it would be an improvement.

It’s just a bit tight at the hip, and I kind of want to tear off the bottom section.

But those criticisms are very minor in the scheme of things – I mean, if she walked in someplace where I happened to be (hey, you never know), wearing this and looking like this, I wouldn’t be able to take my eyes off her!

Love the pattern and the neckline, especially. Overall, I Fab it.

Agreed. It’s a little tight and I’m ambivalent about the bottom section (I like the dress long, but never like that mermaidy type action), but the bodice is killer and I adore the print. And overall, she’s rocking it.

See, I like the cut, like the pattern, wish it weren’t so dang tight. It’s a very pretty dress!

Is anyone else seeing Maria Bello?

I immediately thought, “Wow, Katherine Heigl looks unusually young and un-stuffy in this”. But I’m glad it’s not her – Abbie C. can actually act.

The dress would look better knee-length and looser at the hip, as suggested. It is also freezing where I am right now, and this breath of Spring seems oddly-timed, but fresh and pretty is great all year long.

In short, this is fresh, interesting, and she’s wearing the heck out of it, quibbles or no.

I am hating the mermaid skirt (not in general, but in this execution). It either needs to be a sheath (knee-length or floor length, but up a size in either event so her hips don’t look like sausage) or take the seam at her knees up to her waist and make the skirt 100% flowy. Though, a flowy skirt might obscure the pattern, so maybe the sheath is the way to go. But she looks very lovely here otherwise.

If the dress was cut off at the knee, this would be a good thing. (Also, paired with a big sun hat, glasses, the shoes Naomi Watts was wearing with Krystal Carrington’s dress the other day, and on a yacht. Naturally.)

So I don’t definitively hate the pattern OR the cut, but it looks like the fabric was cut with no regard for the pattern, especially right around her waist – it’s just wispy little bits of half-irises sticking out. I always thought that was half the battle when working with patterned fabrics – making the seams match and the pattern look uninterrupted. Basically, it looks like her dress was made out of random scraps of that fabric.

Normally I hate a bottom ruffle but for some reason it doesn’t ruin this particular dress for me. Maybe it’s not so much a foofoo ruffle but more of a…? I don’t know. I like the hourglass silhouette on her and I like the print too, but I agree it’s a bit too spring.

I totally agree with whoever said that the dress would look better without the mermaid tail and a tad bit looser in the hips. Otherwise she looks really good.

Last weekend when my one-eyed, non-support paying ex was exercising his parental rights, I was bored and watched “W.E.” on Netflix. The movie was kind of a mess but Abbie looked absolutely lovely in it. She had a dark rinse in her hair and was quite beautiful. Also, she’s a pretty decent actress.

Well, SHE’s very pretty, and aren’t we glad she’s finally shed the scarlet A?

Unfortunately, the frock is as good as a mile (and therefore a miss): It’s too tight, to the point that the details of the cut are lost (cf. fetching little fold at the neckline); the pattern repeat is too large, resulting in the odd placement of whatever those things are (and it looks like some of those things are crawling up under her bodice at the waist); and it’s really a June frock, and this is October.

Am I the only one who feels like the tops of her quads are winking at me with one mysterious open blue eye and one squinched shut pink eyelid?

It may just be the way she’s standing, but it looks like her right boob is trying to escape. Whatever, it’s making me stare at her chestal region and now I feel all pervy.

Sans mermaid seam, with an extra inch in the side seams, and she’s a vision. Kind of spring like, but still a vision.

I really think “Wait? This isn’t Katherine Heigl?” should be one of the possible answers. Because I was really confused– as in, “why am I reading about someone named Abby dating Ryan Philllllipppe (no idea how many “l”s and “p”s his name has, so let’s just go with multiple) when the picture is of Katherine Heigl?” Glad to see I’m not the only one who was confused.
Oh and that dress is terrible.

I’m always surprised at how Americans are very seasonal with their outfits! Maybe because where I’m from our seasons are not that dramatic but we don’t care about that at all!

Not all Americans — here in San Francisco we have pretty much the same weather all year round and I’m always surprised when the rest of Fug Nation comments on something being “too summery” or similar comments.

I was on board with this until I realized I could make out the face of a caricatural lion in the print. Now it’s all I see and everything is ruined. The end.

Go up maybe a half a size, make it knee length, and add some kick ass purple pumps – then we’re in business.

I’ve got nothing but love for Miss Abbie, and she’s very goddess here. The waist is too tight, though.

Go up a size, and the great print makes up for the tail.

She sort of looks like a young Zelwegger, no?

There needs to be another option in the poll for “I will never forgive her for breaking up Reese and Ryan and destroying my belief in love so anything she wears is automatically a fail”.
