Fug or Fab: Hayley Atwell

fug-or-fab

You guys know I love her. I mean, she is one of the stars of my Fictional English Countryside Weekend Party Murder/Romance/Time-Travel/Nazi Hunting/Comedy/Drama Miniseries, and I don’t funnel just ANY British celebrity into that, my most beloved but currently non-existent intellectual property. Dame Maggie Smith isn’t even in it! (That’s a lie. I just cast her as Matt Lewis’s meddling grandmother, who won’t release his trust fund until he marries someone she deems appropriate. Of course, eventually she will be won over by someone totally unsuitable, who nonetheless has refreshing moxie. Don’t worry. Although I might kill that Moxie-Having Unsuitable off in Part II: The War Comes and Ruins EVERYTHING.) But do I love this?

I kinda hate the shoes, but I kinda love the dress. I can’t help it. That color is just aces.

What do you think, gorgeous?

I loathe it! Usually agree with your assessments, but do not like anything about this, including the color.

i agree! it looks so cheap, like she fished it out of the clearance bin at charlotte russe!

however, i will read that novel.

Clearance bin at Charlotte Russe in 1992, that is. (If CR existed then – maybe Contempo Casuals?)

Gorgeous dress! Great fit, great color.

Agree about the color- I think it’s subliminally commanding me to love the dress, and I’m powerless to resist it. I’m trying to fix the shoes and dead lips purse in my head… bright red might be too much… white, maybe?

Cute colour, fab shoes, but something is amiss, I think it’s actually the combination of the hair colour with the red lips – would have been gorgeous with smoky eyes and a nude gloss.

Color is great. Fit is great. Hate the cheap looking lace and sequined crap. Shoes, dead-lips purse and lipstick are, of course, hideous.

There is a LOT going on for so little fabric.

Unfug it up- lose the lace, keep the beading. Lose the suede shoes, add a kicky patent- maybe something pinkish? Lose the red lips, go with something pinker. Match the dead lips purse to the shoes still.

Ew, ew, ew! I don’t like the fabric, or the sleeves, or the neckline, but worst of all is the hem. It looks like a cheap nylon slip.

Forget the dress – I was shocked that Dam Maggie Smith wasn’t in the miniseries! Thankfully you came to your senses before the paragraph was over and now I want to see this miniseries more than ever. When does it air? No seriously, when is this getting made?

My thoughts exactly. CALL US, Matt Lewis’s agent! I mean, I might (MIGHT!) be able to love this miniseries more than Downton Abbey, and I didn’t think such a thing could even be possible.

I meant “Dame” Maggie Smith, not “dam.”

And I like to think that she’s probably cool enough that she wouldn’t mind being called “that damn Maggie Smith!”

I thought you may have meant “Damn! Maggie Smith!” as in a celebration of her awesomeness.

I’m just grateful the sheer lace overlay here is blue for a change, and not black.

Loathe, but on the subject of dead appendages . . . (maybe the best segue ever?), when I wear a nail polish shade too close to my skin tone, I get a look I like to call “cadaver hands.” If I ever become a paid mob assassin, my moniker will be Cadaver Hands — and I was reminded of this by Dead Lips. So . . . yeah. Happy (sort of) Monday. Why do holiday-shortened weeks feel as long as regular weeks?

I would probably watch that miniseries 5 times. Maybe 10 if you had Alan Rickman in it being divinely sarcastic. Now there’s a band name for you!

I would totally buy tickets to see Divinely Sarcastic in concert. Even more so if Alan Rickman was the opening act.

One can never have too much Alan Rickman. If only he would do an English Countryside Weekend Party Murder/Romance/Time-Travel/Nazi Hunting/Comedy/Drama Miniseries! Jessica, please get working on that screenplay. It would be so awesome.

The colour is very nice. The dress itself looks as though it might have been repurposed from one of those plastic “lace” tablecloths from Chinatown. The shoes, and the dead lips, are yucky, and their individual ghoulish shades of greige are enough not the same that I’m noticing it.

the dress is pretty cute, also I think I just realized now that she and Gemma Aterton are different people

I read Haley Atwell and thought Hailey Steinfield, and just stared at the picture for 5 minutes trying to figure out when that cute little girl had started dressing like she was in her late 20s. Then once I figured out my mistake, I was too tired to have a view on the outfit. Life is hard, you know?

Love it…great color and she always goes a little vintagey/different… is it me or is she losing weight? Not sure how I feel about that…

Color is OK, but the material looks cheap.

I don’t like the lacy sleeves, and the beading is too over-the-top.

Like many other commenters, love the color but the execution misses the mark. To me it looks cheaply done, like the poly brocade seen on many a Chinatown sales rack. And the dead lips purse is shudder worthy. Although I might have to think of a Halloween costume centering around it. Something Burtonian, perhaps.

Well… her hair and makeup look great?

And they really do. But that’s all that’s Of The Good, here.

That dress is awful; it looks like it was made from a Woolworth’s shower curtain. The shoes and purse are merely slightly worse.

    Pretty Dress.

More importantly, I HATE it when War Comes and Ruins Everything in period dramas. It happens ALL the time. Which, while historically accurate, is devastating to my beloved characters/actual historical figures. In your miniseries, considering the time travel aspect, can a hero prevent the War from Ruining Everything? Just a thought, I don’t want to trample your creative process with my preferences.

I thought this was Cheryl Cole. She looks like Cheryl Cole, yes?

I love the purse. I assume it’s Lulu Guinness, but yeah, much better when it’s red/pink or even black or something other than dead-lips beige.

It’s very 80′s power dressing. I think it makes her look boxy.

Everything about this ensemble except maybe the color is awful. She can do better.

I think the dress would look better without the beading, because combined with the lace it makes the dress too fussy. I like the color, but it’s not totally wowing me. The shoes are blegh. My whole family was mystified by the dead lips purse. (Yes, I am totally raising future Go Fug Yourself readers.)

I think she needed to go up a size and get it tailored. Why is there so much shame in doing this?

Not crazy about the color but it’s OK on her.

    Also, that purse. LOL.

Let’s see: we have a really bright color, shiney fabric and lace. What else? What else? I know! Beading. Lots and lots of beading, so much beading it makes her look like her chest collapsed under the weight. But let’s hold the line and not go too far. Giver her really blah shoes and a truely ugly bag. I think that says it all, right there.
