Fug or Fab: Rachel McAdams

fug-or-fab

We’ve discussed before how Jessica Chastain has become someone with a lot more fashion sense ascribed to her than she probably actually has — meaning, the world really seems to want her to have unerring and wonderful taste, and thus people often like she does, as if The Secret is real and putting it out into the universe will make it true. But in fact she really doesn’t. That is how I feel about Rachel McAdams. She’s talented (though I’m a little worried about her taste in movies…), and she’s lovely, and so sometimes we do the math and think the answer will be, “She looks great.” But more often than not, the math is faulty.

    also: a bit too blonde?

Yes, thank you. I barely notice what she’s wearing because I’m always so frustrated with her awful headsuits. Go darker! And trim the fuzzy ends!

        EXACTLY!!!

…the first picture makes me think of Rebecca Romijn…. was a Stamos…

I think her goodwill from Mean Girls still sustains her. At 26 she looked younger than Lindsay! Her hair color matters too, although I love her for trying different colors all of the time. That second dress is flat out adorable and basically her hair and make-up are the same from the first picture.

But Michael Sheen, WHY? He looks horrible and frumpy and OLD in that combo. He can’t rock a red velvet jacket. He’s no Samuel L. Jackson. Or even Ryan Gosling.

Yes, Mean Girls! But, every time I see her, I think of where Lindsay is and it makes me sad.

For me, it’s goodwill from season 1 of the brilliant Slings and Arrows (and if you haven’t seen it yet, RUN, don’t walk).

I have a horrible suspicion that her weird houndstooth thing is exactly like the “free gift” I got from ModCloth in my last order–a weird length of houndstooth with wire inside its edges. I had no idea what they expected me to do with it–and now I can safely say I still don’t.

I love how pale she is – however, that hair is too blonde for that skin tone and washes her out completely. The second dress is cute, and the first “outfit” is a big WTF.

My point being abou ther hair and make-up is that she looks remarkably BETTER in a prettier dress, even though the styling is the same.

My thoughts exactly. That first outfit is a disaster and honestly, just not flattering to her body shape. I’m not saying if you’re shaped X you can never wear clothes that are cut Y. I’m just saying that you have to be judicious. The second dress is so very much better, though I’m not crazy about the belt.

Heather’s commentary to slide 1 is spot on; that’s totally the feeling I often get from RM’s fashion choices: that her outfits find themselves so interesting, when it’s really unwarranted. She has so much raw loveliness with which to work, and so rarely does it full justice. She really is one of the prettiest gals in show business.

Once again we wonder why someone who is so very pretty and talented would dress so absurdly. Imagine a flowy and feminine dress . Some people can get away with startling choices, like Cate B and Swinton. We want them to surprise us- they have the wit or maturity or style or something. But Jessica and RAchel – no.

Well, if Rachel and Jessica want to successfully wear odd or surprising styles, they must, as Cate and Tilda are, be willing to let go of the “pretty girl” choices elsewhere. But as long their hair, makeup and entire presentation aside from a weird dress are screaming “I’M STILL AN INGENUE, IF YOU’RE CASTING!” they are doomed to mostly look awkward and wrong in experimental clothing that is, as all things experimental are, not necessarily all about conventional ideas of what is pretty and flattering.

        Very astute comment.

        Interesting and insightful.

I would just note that even if RM (and Jessica B.) *could* pull of something interesting like Cate B. or The Swinton, the sartorial choices they make aren’t odd/experimental in the avant-garde, artsy way. They’re odd in a “I found all this at the mall today and decided to wear it together, a la Claudia from Babysitters’ Club” way. I guess what I’m saying is that I agree with your analysis, but also don’t think they have an eye for things that are truly interesting in an artistic way.

That first outfit looks like what Lanti from this season of Project Runway would have designed for the “women on the go” challenge if she hadn’t been eliminated in episode 2.

There’s some disturbing poochy business going on in the Midol zone of the dress. Which is particularly disturbing given the faux-penis effect happening directly below. Can’t blame RM for either, just question what couture crackpot decided to repurpose Jonathan Adler’s barcalounger.

I miss her as a red-head, but I think the second outfit is awesome.

Her taste in movies is like her clothes, bizarre and eclectic . I love her but just yesterday my sister and I were lamenting that she’s in dumb movies. I just want her to pick better projects. I think she would be a good Amy in the Gone Girl movie even though that book is bizarre and not worth the hype.

I might understand the first look better if the houndstooth swatch replaced the tiered satin cummerbund. On my poor home monitor, the first photo looked like her bottom was on backwards.

HEY GIRL — one must question a lady who throws over Gosling for Sheen (although both are wonderful actors). At the same time, I don’t understand the Gos throwing over Rachel, his compatriot and obvious life partner, for Eva Mendes, even if she agrees to walk his dog whilst he’s out of town. I wish that Eva Mendes and Michael Sheen would be cast in a film and fall in love, FORCING the Gos and McAdams to reunite. I have greater wishes than that for the world at-large, but with regards to the stars of “The Notebook”, nothing less could make me happier.

I think I agree with you… I also believe they belong together! *sigh*

The first outfit immediately made me think of Gwen Stefani, who would have rocked it. It’s just not quite right on Rachel. She is lovely, and I actually like the outfit, but she is lacking a certain “something” in it. Make sense?

I think I must be one of the only people in the world to be unimpressed by Rachel’s acting skills. She’s just a doe-eyed Hollywood blonde with big teeth who always seems to be weeping and talking about love. Style-wise she seems equally blah. Sorry, Notebook fans.

I like the 1st outfit and think she looks cute in it! The 2nd one, I love!!! WANT! It’s so flattering and intetesting to look at! Plus, she looks FABULOUS in it! LOVE!

Her hair looks amazing, surprised she pulls off the very blonde so well.
