Fug or Fine: Jessica Chastain

fug-or-fab

So, one of the tidbits from the Emmys that we never got to use anywhere is that Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock mentioned a Web site called… well, a filthy mash-up of his name and Jessica Chastain’s… that is dedicated to imagining the two of them as a couple via inserting their heads into photos of other couples. I find that both hilarious and… incredibly DEDICATED… and it has absolutely nothing to do with this outfit except that I guess maybe this head will pop up somewhere else on the Internet atop, like, a photo of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

I do love a polka-dot dress, but something about the proportions of the blazer and the ruthless efficiency of those shoes gives it all an Air Hostess vibe. But, you know, a First Class attendant who brings you warm cookies and free cocktails and asks you about your day and then gossips with you about what celebrities she’s seen disappear into the lavatories with their companions, and not the mean kind who yell at you if you are desperate to use the bathroom before they have parked the drink cart and then ram said cart straight through your arm without another word.

What do you make of it?

The colors don’t seem to do anything to enhance, more like overpowering her.

I love a polka dot with a blazer, but the dress seems…. ill-fitting. If your blazer is that oversized, then shouldn’t your dress be more fitted to your shape, so as to not make you look like a sack? A sack with a pretty face and cute shoes, but a sack nonetheless.

I think it’s very cute, and I think I need/want both pieces. It might look less air hostess with bigger, loose hair, but I still like this

Love the red lip, but the gathering at the waist and the too-long blazer make it look like maternity wear on her.

I voted scrap it ‘cuz seriously. Is she going to work at her job as an administrative assistant? And if she is, does she have to dress so boringly to do so?

(Also: “ruthless efficiency” as an adjective for those and other, similarly work-a-day-shoes is about the most perfect description, ever.)

Um….I kind of want to check out that website. Is that wrong?

I do too. I can’t figure out what the name mash-up would be, and I’m leery of googling at work to find out.

I hate the blazer. The dress pattern is great but who in the world puts a big knot of fabric right on the tummy area of a dress?! That’s not going to look flattering on ANYone. Bleh.

Is she pregnant? Did I miss the memo? Someone, do tell!

    • Emily

I was wondering that too! If so, she looks great! If not… well… the fact that we are wondering whether she is pregnant seems like a sufficient critique.

Im getting a “First Lady of the 1980′s” vibe.

OT sorta: I tried watching The Tree of Life the other day. WTF was that shit?

Almost, but not quite right. The hooves can go anytime.

    Her face looks GREAT!

She looks great, if she is a 50 something year old woman.

Like fetch, I don’t think Jessica Chastain is going to happen (not for lack of trying on Hollywood’s part).

    • Breda

Well, she sort of already is happening. Also, she’s CRAZY-talented. And, obviously, gorgeous. She may not be the most stylish actress, but she absolutely shines on screen.

Incidentally, I saw a trailer for the horror movie Mama the other day, and she’s so gothed out in it that it took me half the trailer to figure out why she looked so familiar.

“she sort of already is happening”- That is exactly my point! You either happen or you don’t, there is no “sort of already is happening.” I think her window to “happen” has passed.

I have nothing against her, I happen to think redheads are the most gorgeous of gorgeous women. Like Julianne Moore, I think she gets it wrong (sartorially) much more than she gets it right, for no reason that is comprehensible to me since she has a beautiful face and envious skin.

She may not move the needle much on the Celebritometer, but I’m betting any of her contemporaries would be proud to claim her resume. Maybe she just wants to be an actor and not a movie star.

Actually, I’m pretty sure her window is wide open: she’s done 11 films in the last two years, and has 5 more coming out or in post-production at this moment. Say what you will about her generally unfortunate fashion sense, but she’s a very talented actress, and it seems that every director in Hollywood wants to work with her.

        • Jane

          No, she’s definitely happening.

She’s happening! As someone else stated, she’s an actress not a movie star. She’s very talented and I love to watch her work.

        • Nancy
          0

My definition of “happening” is movie star, one who people will flock to the movies to see based on their stardom alone (such as Julia Roberts, Keira Knightly, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, etc). Sure, she is an actress and a damn fine one but movies are not made around her alone. She has been in 9 movies since 2010 (according to IMDb) but she was not the star attraction (most people probably can’t name 5 of the 9). Very few actors/actresses make it to the “happen” stage, it is not meant as an insult to her so don’t get your knickers in a twist.

Agree — somebody — and I don’t get that it’s her — desperately wants her to be the next big thing — but she’s the second coming of Julia Ormond.

I am at work or else I would be googling what I think that site might be called. I imagine it is the first part of his last name and the last part of her last name (gross… and funny). Unless what I came up with is worse than what it’s actually called, if so then I am deeply ashamed my mind went there. lol.

you are correct – my shameless google search informed me of such.

Oh, yeah. I guess it is kind of obvious when you stop and think about it. I shall NOT have that in my search history at work. [blushes]

Where is she? This doesn’t seem to be event-appropriate unless she is at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Harper Valley PTA.

I shall have to search for the website at home this evening. My love of redheads knows few boundaries.

The dress makes her look sort of pregnant. Which is fine if she is. Not if she is not.

The hair and outfit makes her look like Margaret Thatcher. And that’s not a good look!

Oh that is a dirty name for a website! Love it!

The polka-dot might be good by itself, with sandals, as a pretty little halter top sundress- see the telltale bow behind her neck- but had no business being paired with clunky black pumps, a cheap 70′s blazer, and Margaret Thatcher’s hairdo and lipstick.

And for goodness sakes, eyebrow pencil is your friend! Try making acquaintance.

I think this is super adorable and want to own it, honestly. That knot at the stomach is a mistake, and the shoes were a boring choice for an event, but I think it’s otherwise very cute.

Also, I’ve been seeing this style of eyeliner on lots of women lately, and I think it’s gorgeous. Must copy.

Jessica Chastain’s mom could be her twin sister!

He also told me that her mother is the one who discovered said Web site and told them about it.

I wish she had gone full-out “I Love Lucy” with this look — fuller skirt, nipped-in waist, maybe a little bolero. Definitely ditch the blazer and make the shoes funkier and/or more vintage-y.

I like this, all of it. But, something about it is making it look dated. Maybe the fit?

It was cute when Mrs. Miniver wore it.

I do think it’s adorable on her! I would wear the dress without the blazer and a different pair of shoes, but in Chastain’s case, it works! I’m loving the hair & makeup, especially the red lips!

    Polka dots are OK!
The navy blazer not so much (maybe too long for this outfit).
The lipstick and expression is freaking me out!
All that and the pumps, maybe she is trying to go for a textbook 40′s look?

Jessica is very hit or miss. . .this is a miss. That dress makes her look pregnant and the blazer looks like an afterthought. I have seen pics WITHOUT the blazer and it’s a lot better and more flattering. I can appreciate that she likes to try different things stylewise. . .but she is soooo pretty and has a great figure. She needs to flatter it 100% of the time. I think a lot of times she dresses too old. She’s not 50 – she’s 35!! Dress like it!

I strongly dislike her red lipstick. Way too I Love Lucy for a “serious” actress (anyone who stars opposite Shia LeBouf needs those quotes for a few months). Bring back the wan and faintly consumptive air she usually cultivates.

I feel she’s in an epic off-camera battle with Amy Adams, but Emma Stone will swoop in for the win.

I like the outfit, but I think it’s way too old for her. I was so intrigued by the notion of Cumberbatch and Chastain as a couple that I got monumentally distracted, though. Their kids would have extraordinary cheekbones and red hair. I kind of love that.

I also love that Benedict Cumberbatch is so very aware of all the obscene things people do to his name and doesn’t seem to mind that much. But I guess when your school nickname is Bendy-dick Cum-on-my-baps, you gain a lot of perspective. And looking at this picture and his gleeful expression, I think they’re feeding into it. http://www.benedictcumberbatch.co.uk/benedict-cumberbatch-at-the-9/jessica-chastain-and-benedi.html

This girl is gorgeous. Her taste is ok. But what ruins it is her hair. Her hair is always bad. It never suits her, even when she just wears it down.

This costume makes her head appear to be HUGE.
