Rihanna got here via a series of nail-biters; in the Final Four, she bested Fug Madness ’08 champion Bai Ling with a mere 51%, and in the game prior to that, she squeaked past Solange by less than one percent, accrued in the final hour the polls were open. As we should have guessed from her wardrobe, she likes to make things interesting. Amber Rose, on the other hand, unseated early favorite Lady Gaga in a slam dunk — she’s no slouch, as surely those of you who had Gaga winning the whole thing will attest. But can a girl best known for being Kanye’s crazy arm candy bring it against RiRi, who brings more to the cultural dinner table than just her wacky get-ups? Are you ready, on this Monday morning, to have your eyeballs assaulted by the greatest works of the two women you, Fug Nation, have declared to be the celebrities most infected with the madness of fug this year? Amber Rose. Only because something R looks truly beautiful, but I have never seen Amber in anything that didnt make me wonder what was going on.

This is so difficult that I actually scrolled down to the comments to see if anyone can sway me.
Dare I say this is like the O’Day/SWINTON match up when the nature of fug itself is called into question? Last year, I went with O’Day, but this year Amber Rose’s cheap may lose to Rihanna’s expensive nightmare. Consequences must be given for the green batwing jumpsuit.
When it comes down to the clothes, it’s a toss up for me. Even though it should only be about the clothes, it’s not. Rihanna is talented, pretty and edgy. Amber Rose just looks like a ho. Amber is the fugliest of them all.
My vote’s for Amber Rose. Rihanna is a worthy adversary, and in any other round that black blazer with the shiny silver starfish pasties would have sealed the deal for me, but Amber Rose’s fug is so pervasive and diverse (that flesh-colored jumpsuit! Those canary-yellow boots!) that I could not, in good conscience, vote for anyone else. I have only one question: If (when!) Amber Rose wins, will Kanye share the podium when she makes her tearful (surely tears of joy!) acceptance speech?
I would give it to Rhianna for the geometric, pastel tulle alone. I mean, the Gumby suit definitely carried her this far, but I don’t think it gets her over the finish line. The spiky bandage suit certainly merits attention, as does her homage to Prince AND Madonna, with extra pearls.
Amber has a series of fugly cat suits and ill-designed dresses, but there’s no real attempt at style. It’s more like she’ll wear whatever she wants and thinks Kanye will find hot, even if it’s fugly.
Rhianna is trying HARD to be as awful as she is. Sometimes she messes up and looks good, but that’s no reason not to give her her due.

This is so hard. How do you compare a Leeloo Dallas wannabe disaster with a full body python catsuit? In the end, I may have to give it to RiRi, whose fug is so expensive and therefore worse than Amber’s more run of the mill cheap ghetto ho wear.
Rihanna all the way. This selection of photos is only the beginning of the Wackadoo Parade she trailed all around town for the entire year, while Amber Rose debuted her affinity for the crazy with far less frequency. Rihanna has an immense budget and leighway with a stylist and other resources, yet willingly chose to serve as Mayor of Crazytown. Also, that white bandage deal is the ultimate insult to fashion.
Rhianna is a famous talented artist/superstar who should know better! She dresses the way she does b/c she thinks it is fashionable. Amber Rose is a no-talent nobody seeking attention through ridiculous attire. At face value it is a toss-up, but considering these 2 points, I voted for Rhianna.

Again, I voted AmRo. Because there are times when RiRi manages to bring the pretty. I have yet to see a single moment when AmRo manages anything than utter FUG. Plus, there’s the Kanye factor, which pushes Amber over to Fug Madness Champion, IMHO.
For sheer, unadultrated ugly, Amber Rose wins for the string-bedecked nude bathing suit (I cannot in good conscious call it a dress). But in the end, I voted for Rihanna, because I feel like her complete body of work shows much more range. Amber Rose does catsuits and underboob. Rihanna does Fifth Element bandage tributes, oddly sculptural tulle and evening gowns that nonetheless turn into a crotchular disaster, AS WELL AS catsuits and underboob. So for breadth of portfolio (as well as a sneaking suspicion that Rihanna actually cares about design and is trying to be stylish, while Amber Rose is just trying to attract paps), I had to give this one to Rihanna.
Amber all the way for me. Rihanna may be fug but it’s amusing(for me at least), whereas Amber’s fug is mildy terrifying and Kayne is a terrible accessory.
Who is AmRo other than someone’s arm candy? I mean RiRi is at least a Rock Star and hence the funky outfits are part of the gig. But AmRo? WHO ARE YOU?????

Even though this WAS my final 2 match-up (yay me!), I have to return to my ethical base and say that the person who is most relevant should get our vote. So, yes, I did send AR to the finals but, in general, I like to reward people with actual JOBS (so, I don’t vote for Phoebe Price or Fabiola whoozits…) Don’t ask how Amber Rose sneaked past me, because she’s in that “who is that and what does she do besides dress badly?” category.

First, let me admit, this is not the final, I had hoped for. This final pales into comparison to what might have been if Bai Ling had faced Lady Gaga.
However, Fug Nation has spoken. I thought about not voting at all, but that would have been sour grapes. Still, I won’t be surprised if others are not so inspired and choose not to vote.
I don’t think Rhianna deserves the fug title, but I just can’t bring myself to vote for Amber Rose.
Amber is boring and lazy with her choices. Everything is made of stretchy material and skin tight. I never get the sense Amber tries to bring her best and is missing. She’s uninspiring.

I feel like i should go for Rihanna, both for her variety of fug and the fact that with all the money in the world, THAT’S what she/her stylist chooses. Plus: The catsuit of white strips is possibly the best thing anyone’s worn all year, IMO.
Still, Riri’s choices are so INTENTIONALLY fashion forward and shocking, they just seem to go against the true spirit of “I look nice, right?” fug for me. Even when she’s not actually performing, RiRi still kind of…. is with her sartorial choices. Hence: AmRo FTW!

So was a definition of FUG ever agreed on? I’ve always thought the tagline “because fugly is the new pretty” implied that outrageous fashion crimes were more interesting, propelled almost into the realm of fantasy, and perhaps could be appreciated as an art form. In praise of fug, as it were. Or course it’s ugly, but it’s intriguing ugly.

Amber Rose misses the boat by WHOLE OUTFITS, Rihanna just screws it up with bad tailoring, or too many accessories, or weird shapes. The Gumby jumpsuit? Okay, bad (really bad), but it was an awesome color on her. I think anything she wears on stage (i.e. the bandage catsuit) doesn’t count…she’s performing.
But Amber Rose? Sad, sad, sad. You can call her stuff cheap all you want, but someone’s bankrolling her. And that’s what she wears ALL THE TIME. At least we see Rihanna in jeans occasionally.

Wow, this is tough. I too came to the comments section to see if I could be swayed. It would be so much easier if ONE of them had used a small dog as a fashion accessory! That said, I am going to have to go with RiRi because I do think she is more serious about her fug. She thinks she looks fabulous. Amber is just looking for attention.

I’m also having a very hard time deciding. Both of these women have perpetrated some heinous crimes against the sighted; I feel that AmRo’s outfits are generally worse overall, but Rhianna is a style icon. People are trying to emulate her! I think I have to go for Rhianna.

Here’s the thing: I think Ri rocks the wardrobes… I actually like that green jumpsuit and the white bandage jumpsuit because (JUMPSUITS ASIDE) she is a performer and these costumes are appropriate. Ri is consciously doing an 80′s villain otherworldly siren thing in response to being a beaten woman in the press (need we forget the Chris Brown incident, also part of what happened this year?), so the f-off spikes and unsexualized sexy she has been rocking is perfect, in my humble opinion.
Amber on the other hand… her costume is her BANGABLE BODY, because her job is escort and beard. It is indeed a very hot body, which is why she could display it in any number of provocative and awesome things. But come on… that lame white drapy number? That pointlessly asymmetrical crumpled metal body stocking? That nun meets Knights Templar meets obviously scratchy gold knit? Give me the snakeskin, give me the skin tone leotard, give me the slashed leggings because (full disclosure) they kinda give me an involuntary lady-boner. But much of it is nothing but pointless fug and that is why Amber gets my vote.

Here’s my feeling: Amber, while bizarre and trashy, is so very new to the Fug scene. She has so much left to give and so many new lows to hit. Rihanna outfits always have some element of avant-garde, or class, or are at least interesting. Hers is the type of fug that you see on runways – fascinating garments that are never actually supposed to be worn. Amber Rose, on the other hand, has no style other than showing as much as possible. Therefore, I vote for her.

Once again, I am reduced to using my wince factor as the only real difference. Amber just makes me wince. RiRi — I have to study whatever weirdness she wears. She may cause puzzlement, confusion, and WTFery in abundance, but she rarely sears my retinas.

I think Rhianna is trying to push fashion somewhere. Granted that might over a cliff, chased by crack-crazed lemmings, but there’s an effort there. Plus, let’s face it, we can forgive some missteps (pasties? seriously) because she is so very talented. Amber Rose is famous for…..being a famous person’s girlfriend. Wow. I know she’s practically royalty in this day and age of what is considered “newsworthy”, but that also means she has more time to dress herself appropriately since she’s not in the studio or on tour or busy creating or whatever.

In the end, I went for Rihanna, that naked under Levelor blinds thing alone is just wrong, as well as the pasties as top. But if Amber wins, I won’t be disappointed, as both of these fashion wacks are worthy of the title!

I voted for Amber Rose. While Rhianna has some crazy get-ups, I tend to have a different standard for Stagewear than for ordinary about-town wear. For example, if one is onstage in a striped mummy-suit, okay; if one wears that to get a bagel, no, that is odd. I recognize that Rhianna also has some crazy about-town wear, but there are times when she really does look good – in fact, despite the wackiness, she often does. Even in pasties and a blazer, she somehow looks good (can’t believe I just typed that). Whereas Amber Rose…(sigh). She had me at the yellow boots.

They’re both fug, it’s a close one, but for me it’s Rihanna’s hair that put her in the lead. Amber Rose’s barely-there hair is bold and sexy, and it suits her incredibly well. Rihanna has just had so many terrible, no good, very bad hairstyles. And she thinks she looks good.
Rihanna does, indeed, manage to look awesome a lot of the time. But when she fugs, she does it so diversely! You never know what kind of fug you’re going to get with RiRi, which makes it awesome. Amber, on the other other hand…catsuit, catsuit, catsuit, although they’re all incredibly fug. Less range.

Amber Rose’s general level of fug is so high that I actually looked at that gold thing with the hood and thought she looked kind of nice. I think it’s because the hood covers up her shaved head and makes it look like she might have hair, and if she had hair she would actually be quite pretty. Rihanna takes fashion risks that sometimes succeed, and however wacky her outfits are they generally show some awareness of what looks good with her face and figure. Amber Rose just uglifies herself on a daily basis for no reason.

I just figured out why Amber Rose bugs me (and fugs me) so much more than RiRi — I really, really, dislike Amber Rose’s pendulous sandbaggy bazooms. So I was yelling at my computer screen about how impossible this fug match is when my boyfriend strolled over to see if he could help. We started at the top and every time Rihanna’s came up, out of his mouth was things like “pssshhhhh WHAT THE F*** is THAT? Who wears that? IS she…does she wear duct tape on her nipples? FugNation could use some guidance from our leaders so we can all get on the same page as to what makes the winningest fug. There appears to be broad consensus that Rihanna is “better” than Amber Rose – her fug is more varied, more daring, less cliched, less smutty. But some of us think that means that RiRi should win, because her fug is more fascinating, while others think A.Ro should win, because her fug is more appalling.
I am of the opinion that no one should win fug madness based on one shade of lipstick, a refusal to prop up her substantial bosom, and catsuit after catsuit.

OMG this was so hard! I went back and forth between the two of them, and finally decided that Rihanna has money, stylists and designers working with her and assisting with her design… all Amber Rose has is herself and Kanye. My philosophy of voting in Fug Madness is that I always prefer a vote of celebration to a vote of condemnation. (I voted for SWINTON over O’Day last year.) When the competitors are in the same category, I go with the stronger celebration or the stronger condemnation.
In this case, I definitely condemn Amber Rose way more than Rihanna.

Amber is interesting up to a point but the “ladder” effect happens too often. At least Rhianna changes up the fug more often. She gets bonus points for always looking for a new way to fug it up.
Please, please… for the love of everything. It is RIHANNA. This should be both a curse and a gift, and I think Rihanna deserves it. Do we really want to pay attention to Amber Rose another year?? Who will better defend their title? Let’s not give the title to another O’whatever her name was… vote RiRi.
PS – I am still upset that the Big East did so poorly in the tournament. Syracuse, to be specific. I don’t know if I can stand that pain again.
Being crowned queen fug is a celebration, and the contestant has to be able to pull it off and carry her crown throughout 2010.
Amber Rose, being a nobody, does not have that clout. Rihanna, as robotic as her music is, is her own personality. Rihanna, queen fug.

I am very very disappointed with how Fug Madness has turned out this year. I ended up voting for Amber, but I really dont think either one of these ladies is worthy of the title. Amber Rose is a nobody dressing in obnoxious stripper-wear for the sake of attention which makes me feel her fug is not really very legit. Rihanna on the other hand, in my opinion, actually looks good most of the time in spite of her ridiculous fashion choices (with the exception of the pasties and the green winged jumpsuit) Still she pulls that crazy shit off better than anyone else could, and she is committed to her look. Ideally I would have liked to see Juliette Lewis vs Taylor Momsen in the final with Taylor winning, but there are many other people I would have preferred to see in the finals including Solange, Mischa, Courtney Love, or even Gaga.
Rihanna can carry off whacky. Amber just looks nasty. She’s the budget priced ripoff.

Well, it’s come down to this. I find myself making a choice based on how well-made the awful clothes appear. Rihanna wears well-tailored yet really stupid designs. (Yes I’m sorry I don’t have a better adjective but that’s just how it is I guess…) And she has a bit of a break because some of these are stage clothes.
Amber Rose’s clothes look like something my daughter could make, and she’s 8 years old. Amber has access to lots of money and great designs, and she doesn’t have to be crazy for stage wear. Yet she chooses to dress like that. Too bad – she has a sweet and fun face that hints her personality is great too. I bet she was huge fun to skip class with in high school. And yet, I must give her the fug.

I was with Rihanna all the way. Amber Rose pulls off fugly, yes, but her outfits are also just BORING. With Rihanna I may be shaking my head, but it’s partially in amazement at the creative variety of what she pulls off.
Both women are beautiful and work their clothes well, but I’d rather be fascinated than bored.
That was a bit hard, or so I thought. I decided I’d mark them both so that I wasn’t swayed by one or other of the pics. (BTW, not fair for Rihanna to have one more pic than Amber. She might have won it for me) But Amber came out a winner by about as much as the percentages of the voting.

It became a vote in my house – I dragged my family in to vote (they treated it with similar disgust) and we came down on the side of Amber’s ridiculous, trashy fug – RiRi dresses horribly, but still looks beautiful. I can’t get past that string dress.
I went with Amber because their have been times this year that I’ve actually liked something Rihanna has worn. Same can’t be said for Amber.

This year’s Madness proves the depth and complexity of what fug is and can be. The whole costume/intention/art/fame-whore debate was very interesting. But so many people supported AmRo because her style is trashy. People, is that where we’re going with this? “Trashy is the new pretty?” Is that a slogan we can all get behind?
Maybe next year there should be a separate fame-whore category, where the likes of AmRo and Phoebe Price can have their own grand boobalicious crotchtacular smackdown.
