Fug or Fab: Jenna Fischer

fug-or-fab

Confession time: I do not watch The Office. Heather does, so we’re not total philistines over here, but for whatever reason it just doesn’t grab me. I don’t know why. Regardless, I have been given to understand that people are all into that cute John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer here:

SO CLOSE. I actually kind of dig this, but the dress + the beehive (even though y’all know I love me some big hair) + the pale lip is almost a little too costumey for me. But what do I know? I am just SLOWING DYING WHILE WAITING FOR THIS FOUR-DAY WEEKEND TO BEGIN OH MY GOD WHY ISN’T IT THE FOUR-DAY WEEKEND YET I WANT TO DIE.

    Hate!!!

Maybe the dress on somebody else but the whole thing works together to make her look at least a decade older than she is. (and also seems to add a few inches to her hips that weren’t there last time I saw her) terrible hair and make-up + a bulky unflattering dress = NO

  2. Claire's mom

Man, Jenna’s got hair like my dear-departed mother-in-law had for MANY years until she discovered that there was life beyond the beehive (love you, miss you, Dolly!). Although this one is not nearly tall enough – if you’re gonna go big, COMMIT. Then, the dress, which is sorta meh, and the shoes are too dark for it. She’s way cuter than this. Is this day done yet?

  3. KAB

The shoes are adorable and I even like the top, but the hair isn’t doing it for me. And is it just me or does the skirt look sort of plastic-y?

  4. Christine

For me, this is a scroll-up fug. I like the dress but the hair and makeup age her. Or if she was going to do that hair, her face needed a little more pizzaz.

  5. geemee

I wish the skirt was more fitted and less shiny. And her lipstick darker.

  6. Kristabelle

Jessica – I don’t watch the Office either. It’s just un-funny to me for some reason.

Anywhoodle…I rather like Jenna’s outfit – hair included, mostly. I could do without the pouf at the top, but pulled back hair was definitely the way to go. I think the dress is understated but still sparkly. I nice dress to wear to an Office party. Heh.

  7. SaraK

I don’t know what she’s supposed to look like (another non-Officer here), but I do think she’d look much better with a good lipstick. I clicked “LOVE” anyway, since she looks so much better than most of the people we greet here each day.

Just imagine how Phoebe Price would have “styled” that dress….

  8. Beth

I just thought this was a simple scroll-down fug. (Although the shoes aren’t bad.)

  9. Anonymous

i love the dress but the hair and make up are in need of some serious help!

  10. Maria

The dress is great but needs different styling. She looks about 50 years old.

  11. Erin

Love the top actually, but agree with GeeMee, a slimmer skirt would do the trick. I think it’s the gathering on the waistband that is really killing it for me. Much in the way I will kill a holiday-themed cocktail if this day EVER ENDS.

  12. Jennifer

Love her, love her, love her. She blogs on MySpace, and her blogs are pretty cool. She always posts about household things she likes/uses (recently she posted about cleaning a couch slipcover with Oxiclean, because among other stains it had sooty kitten paw marks on it).

That being said*, I don’t love this look. There’s something else blah about her makeup besides the lip – I think it might be some eye brightener under her eyes. And the hair is definitely not doing her any favors.

I think the outfit may have popped more with gold shoes rather than black.

    *Anyone watch Curb this week?

  13. MIMI

The dress is random, her face is pasty and the hair is better suited on a senior citizen. OH HONEY NO.

  14. Clara

Love the top, great colour, don’t love the dirndle skirt. Glad she’s not wearing booties. Can’t stand booties with a dress. She looks kind of tired, so maybe a bit more glamour face.

  15. Annette

I just wish she had a sassier attitude with the dress

  16. Terri

Don’t love the hair or the bunchy skirt. But I think the biggest issue I have is presentation. The dress is all one-shoulder glam and sparkly and then she’s “hum de dum, standing here with my hands in my pockets waiting for someone to let me in.” I know it’s not an unfug, but if it were I’d say lose the waistband, add a long skirt and fabulous clutch and just enough Joan Collins attitude to stand like you meant to wear a glammy off-the-shoulder gown and it could work. I wouldn’t even mind the hair.

  17. thereset

take the hair down, add some lipstick, streamline the skirt, and lose the darn pockets. wtf pockets in dresses these days? its not like any woman is actually utilizing them. i said good day!

  18. super

Not to be critical, but as far as I can tell your job involves looking for pictures of crazily dressed celebs and writing hilarious and snarky things about them (and maybe cuddling with intern George?). That is the kind of stuff most of us do in our spare time, so when I sit here in ugly hose and sensibly heeled shoes, staring at a spreadsheet, I don’t feel any sympathy for your longing for a four day weekend.

  19. Kiki

i like her. i like the office. the dress not so much. why dear god won’t this day end.?!

  20. IseultTheIdle

The dress is cute, although as always I’d like to see it in an actual color. (Get your hands out of your pockets, girl.)

Hair and makeup are aging her before her time, though.

  21. Christy

Maybe if that random sleeve was removed, and the waist/skirt fit in a more flattering way, and her hair was down, and she had on berry lipstick it would be a 9 instead of a 7.4. Either way I love her, she has a non-hollywood face.

Since it’s after noon, using rounding skills learned in basic math we can round up. Which means its the next day, which means it’s already a holiday, which means we can start in with the holiday cocktails even while we’re at work because everyone is in holiday mode already and no one REALLY expects anything to get done around here, especially not our customers. Drink up.

  22. La Seditiosa

Solidarity, sister Jessica. The Office doesn’t grab me either. I like it in theory, but in practice it doesn’t do anything for me.

I quite like the dress, and the beehive, but she needs makeup with more pizzazz and the skirt looks bad when she has her hands in the pockets like that. It might be a lot better without her hands in her pockets.

  23. Anonymous

I would have preferred it without the hair. It looks too severe…or old for her. Otherwise this would look great.

  24. KPod

This is a Scroll-UP Fug. From the waist up, she looks adorable – love the hair, even like the one sleeve top, though I am not usually partial to that style – but the skirt! It is horrid.

  25. Sarah from Scotland

I love a beehive but the dress needs to be more youthful and a stronger lip is crucial. The Office is amazing, by the way. So you’re all wrong.

The British one is even better.

  26. Ducki

I really like the top of the dress, but the puffy, shiny bottom makes her look bigger than she is. Maybe if just the waist part were matte and elastic so that she didn’t look so THICK it would be better. But I just absolutely hate her big, dumb hair. It makes her look like she’s 60.

  27. Megan

    ENNUI.

When can I start my 11 day weekend!!!

Otherwise, I don’t hate the shirt like I normally hate those one shoulder shirts.

The skirt however, also makes me think of Barbies! Some kind of crazy rainbow-pleather. She looks like she’s stifling a laugh, like “can you believe this outfit, I know, right”

  28. Bethany

I love the skirt. Don’t love the top at all. I think with a different top, her hair (ok) and makeup (ho-hum) might not be quite as blah.

If the top just had the other shoulder and sleeve, it would be passable. Barely.

  29. GFY Jessica

Super, in this time of giving thanks, aren’t we ALL allowed to be grateful for days when we don’t have to sit in front of the computer, and we can hang out with our friends and family, regardless of what we do for work? Everyone needs a little time to recharge — a job is a job, even if it’s mostly a fun one.

Sorry for the digression, guys, please continue talking about Jenna, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  30. GFY Jessica

PS: 11 DAY WEEKEND! I’m drinking to that.

  31. MN

I don’t watch The Office, nor do I know who this woman is, but I am pretty sure that she is not pushing 50, as this picture suggests.

Yes, that hair and make up are working together to age her. I think that this was the look my grandmother went for at my parents’ wedding in 1970, and it aged her too.

The top is cute. It doesn’t wow me, but it isn’t horrible, so I can let it pass. I think it would look better with a different skirt, just as I imagine this skirt would look better with a different blouse, perhaps in white.

The skirt is still troublesome for me, though. Something about the way it’s cut…I’m not sure. Maybe it would be much better without the pockets that just make her look strangely wide and badly proportioned.

I gave this a hate because the overall look is just stepping over the line of blah, into, “Did you actually look in the mirror before you left the house?”

  32. Britta

I’d like the dress better without the sleeve as a more toga style one-armed dress.

  33. jamie

This looks like something Sharon Stone would wear, if she had slightly more class. Too old for Jenna. I want to love her, but she just never gets it right.

  34. Anonymous

I might go for it if it were strapless???

  35. Alma

Everything from the forehead down looks good to me! :)

  36. Becca

I feel so uncomfortable reading this post because I truly love the Office and Jenna Fischer. I read Jenna’s blog and she is so sweet and funny and regular person. (She’s always talking about stuff she buys at Target and how unreal it seems to have to figure out what to wear to awards shows) I keep picturing her actually reading these comments and feeling terrible, the way I would if I tried to get dressed for a night out and 50 strangers gave me their unsolicited opinions about what I did wrong.

But I know that is kind of the point of GFY, which I also love.

    I am confused. Nevermind.

  37. Mary

    Love.

My adoration for Jenna Fischer and love of the one armed dress may be swaying me here.

But I remain convinced that if the hair were a bit looser/bigger (hah) and the skirt was a bit shorter, this total look would be: GAME ON.

As it is, I think it works. I love the top portion of the dress, and like I said previously, Jenna rocks!

  38. foo

No Office watching here, but liked her in Dewey Cox. Especially the duet…

Read my lips and put a little lip stain on your kisser, just duet
    Just duet

I’m happy because she looks happy with it and it is not ridiculous. (And there’s less than one hour left of hell… I mean work. And she’s wearing shoes that are both open toe and not white. And why am I starting multiple sentences with conjunctions?)

Her hair is large, but smaller than Dewey Cox’s, and that makes it all good. Shine on you seemingly (un)crazy diamond!

Loops off into the sunset. W00t!

  39. M.Amanda

Argh. Pockets. On a dress. On the red carpet. Where an actress is posing with her hands in them. FAIL. The rest could be totally cute, which it is not, and this would still make me want to stab my eye with whatever sharp object happens to be handy.

  40. Christy

LOVE Jenna. Love the shoes… I am wondering if she is wearing the Bumpit that Ellen gave to her.

  41. pepper!

for a second i thought this was patricia heaton.

when it was patricia, she looked pretty good.

  42. KarenG

I don’t watch The Office either. Its humor makes me uncomfortable; I get embarassed for the characters. I know they’re not real, and I needn’t feel embarassed for them, but that’s how I feel.

As for the lovely Jenna – I don’t mind the hair, the make-up or the dress. What bothers me is why does it look like she has marbles stuck under her dress on her stomach, like poking out?

  43. Princess Fuzbah

    1. Chop off sleeve.
    2. Strappy shoe with some sparkle.
    3. Deep coral lipstick.
    4. Casual chignon.

She will look very cute, but not QUITE cute enough for John Krasinksi. The boy is MINE.

  44. callielizabeth

Today (while procrastinating)I’ve played four hours of Bejeweled on facebook, checked GFY three times just to see if you guys have posted anythng new, and consumed four diet cokes. In my opinion it has been an awesome holiday prep day–so it bums me out to read snotty comments not pertaining to Jenna’s outfit.(shame on you Super)

Plainly said–she looks like a normal adult. She is not a fashionista and she isn’t pretending to be. I voted LOVE because she looks classy not trashy, pretty not vampy, and normal not nutty.

    Happy Thanksgiving girls.

  45. Blanche

Love the sari-derivative dress, pockets and all. But, nope, beehives off of the heads of the B52s I personally cannot get behind.

The real draw of the American “Office” is Dwight Schrute played by Rainn Wilson, as well as Creed, and the Kelly Kapoor and the Moze characters. A lot of the main action is however kind of endlessly drawn into a cloying saccharine vortex. It can’t deliver the satisfaction of “Arrested Development,” but the American “Office” is solid middlebrow.

  46. Super

You are, of course, right, and I absolutely am being a miserable grump. Please don’t use me as a data point against allowing open comments… and have a great thanksgiving.

  47. Kay

I would like it if she didn’t look so OLD! She doesn’t normally look old, so what’s going on here? I think it’s the hair… it’s not peppy enough! It either needs to be bigger or smaller or shinier or… something!

  48. mar

it’s a dress? it looks more like a skirt+top in which case i would get rid of the skirt and make a knee-lenght dress out of the top.

  49. Jessica (not that one)

I love everyone today, including Super and Callielizabeth! You guys are some great co-procrastinators.

Jenna looks great, much better than I would if I walked a red carpet. That’s why I like her, she seems so everyday.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  50. Becca

Don’t worry, Super, we all get bitter sometimes. And you were awesome enough to admit your mistake.

Love Jenna, hate her hair and makeup. She has such pretty hair, and she should have it down, or if it is up, in a messy updo. I don’t think the outfit is salvageable either. The top would be beautiful on someone 15 years older, the skirt would be awful on anyone.

  51. anneblushes

ok. i actually really love this dress. but OMFG (oh my fugging gracious)–
    WHAT
    IS
    HER
    HAIR
    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

it’s terrible, it’s a travesty. get that hair sleek and tumbling over your shoulders, girl. this isn’t pam’s granny’s pancake breakfast. this is THE RED CARPET. fix the hair et voilá.

  52. carol

i ABSOLUTELY love it, even though the make-up does make her look ten years older than she is… as fug girls always say, it pays to have a decent stylist. she should spend that extra buck – most of the times she needs it.

and i LOVE her (and krasinsky), so i give a blind eye to most of her wardrobe messes. :)

  53. WeekendWarrior

    I’m with Becca.
Love Jenna, hate her hair and makeup. It looks like she has gone red, which is ok. Let’s see it. The hair and makeup age her excessively. I love the top, trade the shiny skirt for a wool crepe pencil skirt. The whistle is blowing here…yippee!

  54. Lisa B.

The dress reminds me of a “Real Housewive”. And I don’t think other people, real actresses included, want to invoke that, but it is pretty on her. And her body is Hot!

I don’t dig the hair. It needs to be different. Maybe not puffy but a messy up-do might have looked cooler.

As a side note, Love The Office and Go Fug Yourself and Facebook Bejeweled.

    Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

  55. GFY Jessica

Oh, pish! Truly, there’s nothing to hold against anyone — I totally knew where you were coming from, Super. No worries.

I’d also just like to take this moment to thank all you guys for being, seriously, so great in general as far as comments go. Even when we disagree, we’re all pretty civil (and grammatically correct), and H and I really appreciate how smart and funny everyone is.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  56. Fox

The whole look screams out “I’m mediocre at best!!!” It’s not the worst thing she could have put on, it fits right and all but it’s not the best. Hair is borderline Donald Trump.

The office, I find annoying, it’s a bunch of awkward looks to the camera–no just no. It baffles me to know that people who work in an office go home to watch a show called the office. Dilbert is okay because it doesn’t take up half an hour to an hour of your time.

  57. Mimi

I’m just 152% over the one-shoulder thing – anywhere anyhow except on Wilma and Betty!

  58. leah

here’s the thing… even though i may not love this look, i like jenna too much to see anything other than adorable.

  59. thepower

At first glance, I thought this was Lorraine Bracco (sp?)…

  60. Rayna

OK, gotta weigh in and say Happy Thanksgiving……even though you may be reading it AFTER.

I love Jenna and am amused with the Office.

In some ways, this is an “awesome from the knees down” look. I agree that the hair and makeup are doing Jenna no favors. I think her slightly messed up curly look is cute.

About the dress, as much as I’m over the whole one shoulder thing (and I am) I would go for chopping the dress off in the middle and having the top pair with a shiny black pencil skirt. Maybe the top AND the bunchy skirt are a little too much together.

  61. vandalfan

The one-armed t-shirt would work if her hair was down, tumbling in waves over her bare shoulder. I like the fabric of the drindle skirt, but it does not fit, and overall makes her look like a rectangle. If it was more tailored at the waist, well, there you go.

  62. happygoluckyme

Not an office watcher either. I think this look would be great if the skirt were unbunchified and the hair and makeup got some pizzazz. I have to say, the GFY girls, their comments, and the readers’ comments are always the cherry on top of my day! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and have an extra cocktail – you deserve it!

  63. happygoluckyme

  64. Suzy

I had to comment because normally I dislike one-shoulder dresses. This is an exciting exception! I love the bodice. If it were paired with a smooth, slim skirt instead of a puffed, pleated ick monster of a skirt, it would be really dazzling!

Meanwhile, that hair has to go. I want to see long, full waves, or at least a lower updo. Anything that looks like Bumpits were involved is henceforth Banned.
I like the pale lip with this color of dress, though. It looks more modern and interesting than a dark lip would.

  65. Suzy

Reading over the other comments, I just have to add that the Office is amazing and she is one of the primary reasons why. But they are ALL amazing, that cast! I’m stymied–how is it unfunny to anyone? It’s so funny, you have to be really careful trying to drink anything during the show, and you end up clutching your guts in silent, body-heaves of laughter. Honestly, folks, what gives?

  66. Bee-fug

The hair – for the love of god, THE HAIR! Why? It reminds me of that hideous spread SJP did for Vogue where they made her look like a 50-something 60′s era Miami Beach “black widow.”

I do like the dress, shoes, etc., but that plus the hair is bad juju.

  69. Rachel

I’m a bit late but wanted to weigh in – love the pockets, hate the fabric of the skirt (too bunchy) and the waste band. She needs a slightly longer sleeve and perhaps a bit more (ahem) lift in the bust area. More eye make-up would also be good bc right now her face is a bit bland (although still adorable! love her love the office) and the hair really is unfortunate – with this sort of almost-matronly dress she needs a more youthful hairstyle.

happy happy happy long weekend and thanksgiving!

  70. kyasarin

I like the dress. I HATE THE POCKETS! Seriously, ladies, this is why God gave us froofy little shiny purses–so we wouldn’t have to ruin the line of our dresses with pockets. Why do people not understand how bad it looks?

  71. Kathleen F.

Waistband and pockets = NO. Otherwise, I really like the dress–the top is quite dramatic and creative.

On closer examination, it appears that Ms. Fischer is indeed wearing makeup. At first glance, I thought she wasn’t. This isn’t really a good thing. If the makeup weren’t so sedate, the updo wouldn’t make her look quite so old. I don’t think the earrings are helping matters either.

  72. Gnatalby

She looks like she’s guest starring on The Office as her own mother, like how Samantha was also her bad twin cousin (???) on Bewitched.

  73. Anonymous

I love Jenna, I think she’s gorgeous and comes across as this really genuine person. That being sad – that look is a big no to me. I love me some big hair, but I don’t think it went with the dress, and it just seemed too old for her. You can do big hair and not make it look like an old lady’s hairstyle, you know?
She still looks tiny, but the dress does add inches to her that aren’t there.
Makeup was totally not right for the look she was going for. She needed more colour, especially on her lips.

Oh Jenna. I love you, but no!

  74. Anonymous

I love Jenna. Dearly. But her outfits a lot of the time seem to end up near misses. She has a gorgeous body, but never seems to pick outfits that show that. This one is no exception. It’s cute, has a lot of potential and I can see the reasoning behind it, but ultimately just doesn’t do much for her. And the hair? I really don’t know what to say. It’s not horrible, but it doesn’t quite work either. She looks great, but I think it’s more her than the outfit bringing that out.

  75. Colleen

I actually like the dress (maybe I’m biased because I love Pam so much). But the hair! The make-up! They conspire to make her look matronly and not a day younger than 50!

  76. Amy

Hair is cute – not with this dress.
Dress with different hair would work if the entire dress had the same pattern the upper half does, and the skirt portion of said dress was a little more form-fitting.

  77. Anonymous

I didn’t recognise her because I thought she was 50 at first.

  78. Christina

Dress is fab, girl is FUG! Period.

  79. gigi

ayyyyy Jenna! the dress is *ok* [cute top part/ skirt is bunchy & possibly flame retardant] but this look — she looks like she smells of cigs, gin & olives… feh [I'm also thinking some brylcreamed slim-tied man is going to arrive and exclaim: honey, Peterson lost the account -- could you make me a drink?]

  80. Lonecub

She looks like Patty Duke circa Valley of The Dolls. In fact I think her stylist stole the whole look from that film.

  81. Hannah Lee

At first glance I thought it was Maura Tierney, and I was glad to see she was out and about after her cancer scare, even if she did look a little run down and had a little styling confusion.

After I read the post and realized it was Jenna Fischer, and had to take another look. There were several things I like about it:

-I like the hair and earrings together, but not with the lips and rest of the outfit.

    -I like the shoes.

-I like the fabric of the top; it has potential.

However, the shape of the top and skirt are NOT flattering on her, take away her figure’s definition and make her look a bit matronly. The outfit should be better tailored for someone her height (instead of someone like Uma Thurman).

It just seems like if you started at the top of her head and measured down to her feet, you have this long stretch between the top of her beehive and her chest. Then, right when you left her chest, BAM!, there’d be her waist, and then BAM! pockets (Pockets?) and then BAM! hips. Finally then proportions would return to normal between her hips and her shoes.

Maybe with just better undergarments and a more flattering skirt this would be quite nice. But as is, not really.

  82. Lizzie

Meh. The whole look is just so expensively mediocre.

  83. Katy

It’s hard for me to judge too harshly, because she’s just so frickin adorable. But I think the outfit would look 1000 better if it was strapless and she had her hair down.

I´ve been reading your blog for awhile and also it under no circumstances occurred to me to comment. That is totally ironic, for the reason that I´ve spent quite a lot of time over the history few months studying what it takes to make people comment on my own website. After reading a couple of your posts I guess it´s controversial topics that stir people´s emotions to the point where they can´t simply just ´let it go.´

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
