When I saw this photo in thumbnail size, I thought Paula Abdul here was Jasmine Guy — her hair is similar to Jasmine’s on Vampire Diaries, and I had just been talking about how Ms Whitley Gilbert is MUCH too young to be playing a grandmother on said show, so I had her on the brain. (It has been pointed out to me that Whitley’s VD character IS a witch, so maybe she’s staying young-looking thanks to MAGIC, and I feel like I might be able to accept that. And trust me, I am happy to see her working, but still. Jasmine Guy is no grandma. Anyhoodle.) Which is why I thought, “is Jasmine Guy actually kind of working high-waisted leather pants? She IS a witch!!”
Look, it’s possible that I have totally lost the plot. This is the third day in a row that I’ve had a fever. Last night, I had a feverish delirium that Ryan Seacrest and I were being forced to perform “Tardy for the Party” for President Obama and I couldn’t find my wig. (Ryan was cool about it.) I dunno. It’s all a little too much, but really, a wee bit. A crisp solid color sheer shirt like the one she has, minus the vertical stripes that inevitably go awry at the boob area, would’ve been fine. What with the tanning, the angled hairdo, miles of blush, shiny stripes and shiny pants – minus one (or two) of those elements and this would’ve been a solid win. Let’s just be happy this this has hit some sort of middle ground and avoids the extreme of “OH MY GOD LADY. STOP.”
On anyone else, this would be certifiably crazy. But on Paula, it’s a refreshing change from her usual brand of Vegas-showgirl-meets-circus-clown. So yay.

Close up, I like it less, but there is something flattering about them in the first shot. Maybe high waisted pants with a jacket looks okay because it’s snot so torso-eating. On the other hand, maybe it’s just that ridiculously skinny ladies can wear whatever they want and not look horrendous. I wouldn’t want to encourage this trend, but as far as these things go, Paula really doesn’t look half bad! In fact, I’d totally give her a B, maybe even a B+.
The pants are really the only thing about this outfit that I like. Paired with a different shirt (you know, one that fits) and cropped jacket the pants could be awesome. But somehow I know that if Paula attempted it, she would end up looking like a bullfighter. Ole!

The dark shadows had me momentarily blinkered into thinking that these (gulp) high-waisted leather pants were something short of blindingly hideous, however after a jaunt into Photoshop and a tweak of the color levels, my eyeballs won’t stop bleeding long enough to allow me to congratulate Paula on morphing into Octomom Leatherpants…
I hate to say this about anything Paula Abdul wears, but I kind of love the jacket. She just needs to lose the pants. But, um, replace them with something, don’t go all Lindsay Lohan on us.

As so many have mentioned, if this is considered IN CONTEXT — from a long like of Paula bizarreness — this kinda sorta works. I mean, it is comparatively GOOD for HER, when held up to the usual brain beating, eye smacking, stomach punching stuff she usually hauls out of her closet.
Still — a comb, a damp washcloth, and maybe some corrective lenses to corral that wandering right eye that’s staring into the spirit lands would be good. A completely different shirt would work, too. The pants? These days, I’m just glad when they WEAR pants. As long as they are in pants, and the pants aren’t see through, I’ll give a point.

On anyone else I’d have a lot to say about sheer fabrics, hair styles, use of blusher, and assorted other issues. But on Paula? I have to agree with everyone who said it’s wonderful to see her not rocking the crazy. She looks pretty damn good.
I will say one thing though (or two since I’ve already contributed my 2 cents — make it 4!), this could look entirely tragic from a different angle/posture. High-waisted pants have a tendency to make stuff “bulge” on even the waifiest of figures, and it may just be that her pose is cleverly hiding it. Very sneaky.
Her makeup is a little heavy and I am not crazy about her shoes (also sick of the peeptoe generally) but otherwise I think she looks awesome. For a short girl she looks way long and I think it’s classy in a unique and modern way.
And for Paula, who usually I think dresses WAY matronly and over the top, I think this is a step in a hugely correct direction! LOVE the hair. Wish I knew how to do that on my head……

The jacket is very nice. The shirt could be okay or even cute with nude camisole underneath, though since today has sucked less than yesterday and mellow is my middle name, I’ll chalk the black bra up to color coordination.

The high waisted pants are atrocious, but this is a step up for Paula. She doesn’t look freakish or scary. Her hair is okay, make up is okay, and the concept of the outfit would have worked if it hadn’t been for that super high waist. Why, oh why are people into this high waisted look? Maybe because it’s my birthday and I am as drunk as Paula is high on pills, but I am horrified.

I would say from the waist up she looks great except that those pants come up to the waist. and they are bad. So I would have to say from the boobs up she looks great. and that means the lower half of her jacket, which is real perdy, will feel rejected. See?! see what her pants made her jacket feel?
I’m not often a fan of high-waisted pants, but I think Paula looks bangin’ here. It elongates her torso, and looks both formal and sexy.
I think it might be better if the jacket were tailored in at the waist a tad, and the tan is completely awful (granted, she’s naturally tanner than many, but not ORANGE).
Abdul’s hair is quite lovely. The gray-peach shirt with silver stripes is pretty good, but would have been significantly cooler under gray or very dark brown or very dark navy rather than obvious, cheap black. I don’t know what material object could be more detestable than leather high waisted pants; but since she’s skinny, and has nice proportions, Abdul is doing the best that can be done with such intrinsically awful pants. And so, Abdul here not only looks fit, for a 40-something pop teevee celebrity, she is verging on looking dignified. This is no mean accomplishment. The whole presentation would actually warrant a nod of respect if her eyeballs were not shellacked open with war paint. Admittedly it’s a tricky balance for all of us past 30. I’d say she should stick with the eyeliner and mascara, and ditch the shadow.
Also, on closer inspection, the jacket’s a tad too busy to pair with both glitter pinstripes AND leather. But still, I give it a general thumbs up.

The pants would be awful alone and the jacket would be weird with more normal-waisted pants…but together, they really do work. I’m shocked; I really did think there was NO good way to wear high-waisted pants.

Those are the first good-looking pair of high-waisted pants I’ve seen. They make Paula look like she has a tiny waist. Or maybe the tiny-waisted Paula makes the pants look good. On consideration, I suspect the latter.

Not bad actually. My least favorite part is the sleeves sticking out of the jacket. If this was an Unfug It Up, I would nix the sleeves so you couldn’t see them poking out of the jacket, and push the collar of the shirt in. Or maybe replace the shirt entirely with a more simple t-shirt like thing.
Otherwise I think she’s totally working it! The pants could be a disaster, but they somehow work. The shoes are perfect, and I’m in all sorts of love with the jacket.
I actually don’t mind the pants, she’s pulling them off. Shoes are fine, overall she looks a lot more pulled together (i.e. not mental) than she has in the past, and she looks kind of youthful. Nog digging the see-through shirt even though I understand she’s doing the match-thing with that and the purse. Other than that, fab! Those pants are like the perfect fit and it makes her look as if she has legs for days. Not easy to pull off on someone as short as Paula. But Dear Paula, less dancing and more eating — your face looks gaunt.
Ok, not such a great look. But she also looks so skinny here! Take away the jacket and padded shoulders and she is almost at the Rachael Zoe giant-head stage, at least in the first picture.
Incidentally, that’s why she’s almost rocking the high-waisted leather jeans — because if you’re vanishingly small to begin with, the unflattering cut makes you look healthily larger instead of the Jessica-Simpson-mom-jeans look, which, as cute as Jess is, was really not a good look at all.

OK, but has anyone looked at the horizontal seam running across those pants at the hips? It’s like someone took a pair of regular leather pants and SEWED ON another piece of leather to make them high-waisted (wasted?)! She would’ve been better off with a cummerbund or something.

On a more positive note, I quite like the trousers, although I think the waist may be a little too high. I feel like I have to grade her on a curve since this Paula Abdul we’re talking about. Based on that curve, I think she looks fantastic. On her planet this is subtle and mature. Y’all, the notch in the top of the pants reminds me of my post-Thanksgiving Aunt Rita with the top button popped on her fancy pants. Un. Fortunate. Also, black lingerie under sheer shirts needs to die. DIIIIIE. The jacket is moderately non-hideous, but c’mon, the rest is painful.
Paula has been going to EVERYTHING lately. If there is a red carpet or an ice cube’s chance in hell that a photographer will be present, she’s there. I think she looks great on the outside. It’s the inside I’m worried about. I would rather critique the outfit of the little girl on the inside.
Little Paula is wearing some hand-me-down jeans and an ugly t-shirt her cousin gave her. She’s pulled the afghan over her little shoulders and wraps it tightly around her, because she’s scared.
She’s scared because she doesn’t exist. If there are no photographers or “fans” present to reflect her image in their eyes, camera lenses and screams for her attention, then she simply doesn’t exist, and that is terrifying. She’s barefoot and her feet are dirty, and she pulls the afghan tighter and tighter around her, as she tries harder to see her reflection in the camera lens.
She looks fabulous from far away. Close up… not so much. But everything in the outfit shouldn’t work, so I think she deserves some credit for that.
