i don’t have a huge issue with the dress but i think it would only work if she lightened up on the accessories. lose the overly chunky necklace and the gargantuan ring, and add in sleeker, less complicated shoes, and it would have been much better. also, maybe lose the faux-pompadour hairdo. but that’s just me.
Um, this is completely nonsensical. Is it on inside out? Backwards? What is that humongous lumpy section in the front? I’m not crazy about the shoes, but I’d accept them with the pretty face and the ok hairdo and the sparkly accessories if she had on a nice black dress. Or really, at this point, if she had on an item of clothing that I could recognize and understand at all.
Those shoes look like a sewer grate – lose them. Set the sleeves in more and get rid of most of the raw edging – specifically the crap on the side seams.

It’s not totally terrible but I do think something has to go. The dress is interesting but combined with all that clunky jewelry and those shoes, it’s visual overkill. Minimize the center ruffle a little (it’s interesting, but not when there’s so much of it), lose the extra rough edges at her sides (they make her hips look wide which I doubt they are), minimize the necklace to something simpler and go with a more tailored shoe.
Ha! I love the “Chinatown” reference (and how awesome is that movie – even though I’m hating on the whole “Free Roman” thing going around H-wood right now – just because he’s an artiste and “has given us so much” doesn’t mean he didn’t commit a CRIME recognized in most of these United States and needs to answer for it, finally – geez). Back to the gal in question. Her dress is not flattering – it makes her look larger than I suspect she really is. And with a fussy dress like this, the necklace cannot also be fussy. Too much fussy! Please dump said dress and find something sleeker to go with those strappy shoes.

I never comment, but I love this dress. Love it. The shoes are not the best choice (by that, I mean they are horrid with it), and the necklace is all wrong, but the dress is great. I think the flash photography does it no favors. You get the weird shadows behind it, which is never a good thing for a black dress, especially this one.
That is not a dress. That is the result of 15 creative minutes with a) half a curtain sheer from a W hotel, b) pinking shears, c) a Singer Stich n’ Sew, and d) a belt. I’m thinking it was preceded by a red wine incident, and heavily influenced by an enterprising assistant who finally put her mother in her place by landing upon an opportunity to “use all that shit” in her giant purse.
Well, it isn’t outright GAH! and it isn’t OOOH! either. I think it’s an interesting dress in an offbeat goth nymph kind of way. I think the belt kind of works…

Can you imagine how interesting this would have looked without the updo? And take away the bling accessories, and add a bright colour, like vivid shoes? And by the way PLEASE someone bring bag elegant shoes, instead of this massive wave of ankle-strangling styles that make everyone look stumpy???
On the other hand, be grateful she didn’t decide to add sparkly leggings to it.
I don’t like the dress at all. Maybe on a different person but it just doesn’t work with her figure at all. She has a great figure but it just does something…weird to it. I think it might be that odd side-fabric that is jagged. It gives the illusion that there is more of her there than there really is. Actually, after looking at it more, it is DEFINITELY that side-fabric. Do away with that and it’s 10000% better.
It kinda looks like one of those Project Runway episodes where they are issued 4 yards of fabric and told that they only tools they can use are a hack saw and twist ties.
I’m torn, because the dress itself reminds me of something Anna Dello Russo (who I adore) would wear. Except Anna would probably lose the necklace, switch out the shoes, bring up the hem, and add a bejeweled satin belt. And there would be some red. That’s what I am imagining right now, and THAT is hella fly. THIS, on the other hand, is fussy, heavy, and monochromatic to a fault.
My sewing teacher would have slapped me back and forth like Jack Nicholson for producing something like that dress.

I am pretty sure my mom once had a shower curtain that looked like this, in a bathroom that had the mint-green-swirl countertops. The accessories are the wrong colour for her skin and look plastic, the shoes don’t work, and the dress overall ages her and makes her way too hippy. And the fabric gives me heebie-jeebies.

It looks raw, unfinshed and as my mom would say “unladylike”. She would also say it is a shame because she is a pretty girl with a nice face and body, and that the clothes are not doing her justice. Sometimes moms are right.

Michael Kors said it looked like she’d made it from black satin sheets and a too-lavish hand at the pinking shears. Heidi commented that it did something horrible to the model’s right boob, and Nina Garcia lamented the poor workmanship. The guest judge was Christina Ricci, and she got the winning dress (see October 19 GFY post).

I kinda like the drama of the necklace, but it’s too much drama with the actual dress.
She looks like a little girl playing dress up in this. I don’t think anything can be done to salvage that dress, even if someone that actually fits into it properly were to wear it. It’s a style so reminiscent of Prom Night ’87 that never needs to see the modern era outside of a costume party. The accessories, particularly that monstrosity of a necklace, cheapen this outfit because if you’re going to wear this thing, you really need to do it with more dainty accessories. I just don’t like the gladiator sandals in any context. Never have, never will, and I don’t care who is wearing them. However, if you are going to wear them, don’t do it with a “formal” dress because it just doesn’t work.
The only positives here are make up and hair, but they do nothing to help her out.

I like the idea of the dress but maybe not this exact execution. The deconstructed look can be pretty cool, but this looks like the designer went a step or two too far and should have reined it in a little. Don’t care for the shoes with it at all. So, I chose “love it and hate it.”

When I look at a picture and the first thought to enter my head is ‘GUUUURL…’, it’s never a good thing. And while ‘GUUUURL…’ is usually reserved for more extreme cases, I still thought it for this one. Why? Because I’m a little saddened because from her beautiful hair, make-up, and jewelry combo she looks like she was in an awesome gown on her way to some important event, when she had an unfortunate accident that somehow involved excess tulle getting stuck in her limo door and thus ripping off half her dress. A GAJILLION DOLLAR DRESS! And like a true professional, she kept on truckin’ and posed for photos anyway, hoping to make the look work.
Point of that daydream? There is no saving this. Burn it, Paula. And give me your husband.
Aside from the obvious problems here, I cannot forgive the boob-pancake effect in the bodice. If she has a great figure (which she probably does), it is not evident in that dress. Also, +50 for the properly-timed Chinatown reference.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. One of my favorite things about this actress is that she has a very honest and innocent face. But, where is it? I’m not even sure this is her. It looks more like the girl that dates(ed?) Jessica Simpson’s ex-husband/reality show partner. I can’t even see the dress because I am so distracted by her make-up and pose.

I’m not sure whether this fabric is a dress, but from the hips down, it makes her legs look sexy-sexy curvy.
This (ahem) item of cloth *almost* manages to show off her hourglass figure.
I say almost, because it does pancake her ladycakes a bit, and I feel the waist could have been more slender and streamlined (but at least this contraption *gives* her a waist, which is something).
The accessories (sewergrate shoes?!) escape my orbit entirely.
Here’s why the, er, “dress” can’t be a total failure:
The fact that a lot of people can write “I hate what she’s wearing, but hoo is she HOT!” means this “dress” isn’t as fug as it could have been.
Maybe there are people who can look good in a burlap sack, but a truly unflattering dress can make even Venus look like a hag full of maggotty haggis. At least we can tell there’s still a beautiful girl under there.
