There apparently is part of me that’s JUST OCD enough that I see Rihanna’s dress dragging on pavement, and I think, “AAAH. It’s going to be DIRTY and RUINED.”

It would be a shame to have this thing pocked with brown spots before it even makes it inside the Glamour Woman of the Year awards. Part of me is in love with the crazy architecture. But another part of me thinks it looks like dramatically wayward office clutter — a Seussian filing nightmare. And what is the point of that pocket? It’s so tight and tiny, you can’t actually keep anything in there unless you want everyone to see what it is. Okay, MAYBE a couple bucks for the bathroom attendant. But if you want to keep your lip gloss there, everyone is going to think you have a strange cylindrical pelvic tumor.
So I can’t decide: fab drama, or fugtastic Alice-style adventure through the bottom of a bourbon glass on the Mad Hatter’s desk?
I am much more clear on my feelings about another recent RiRi gown:
I WANT to think it’s pretty and graceful. But all I can see when I look at it is fabric glued to a Land’s End maillot, as if this week’s Project Runway challenge was to design a glamorous beach cover-up for Tinkerbell’s seaside birthday party. Actually, given the quality of most of the challenges this season, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that turned up in the finale somewhere. Newly crabby Heidi would be all, “I HATE IT. IT LOOKS LIKE RAM’S HORNS ON HER BELLY,” and Michael Kors would be like, “If it got wet, it’d be so heavy she’d DROWN. And Where do Tink’s WINGS GO?” and if Nina Garcia is even there, she’d say something about construction or practicality, and then the usually useless guest judge would be all, “You have definitely made something.” And I think I agree most with Usually Useless Guest Judge: Somebody definitely made… something… here.

That first dress–it’s too close to what I expect Riri to one day get married in. It would work better for me, in this non-wedding scenario, in black or grey or some crazy colour like canary yellow.

I like the chiffon in the second dress, plus the colour is pretty on her skin, but the high curved things on her hips are weird – like something on Henry VIII’s jacket. It’s unnatural in that fabric.
If that opening was about twelve inches further down her leg, and minus the curved ridges, it would be pretty.
The first dress needs a little pulley thingy on the side so the levelor slats can go up and down, up and down. The second one is missing a panel in a very compromising place. No thigh deserves to be entirely abandoned of clothing.

Let us all step back and note that RiRi here is NOT wearing black leather with silver studs and the like. She’s in very light and neutral colors…coming out of the darkness?? I THINK SOOOO! I think she looks gorgeous in both outfits.
Her hair color is the most fug thing about both of these looks. She’s so pretty, she could easily keep her hair natural and look gorgeous.
I think I’d like the white gown better if the sheer neckline was taken away, and the folds at the top created the neckline instead.
I have heard (not seen) that the back has a big white zipper from her neck down to her thigh. Sounds very disturbing.
I like the top. The bottom (fishtail?) reminds me to much of ironed linnen napkins.

I agree with Blue Satin Sashes…although I like touch of sheer fabric at the shoulders, I too wish the folds/architectual whatnot created more of a neckline. It’s so bulky.
It is really great to see her in neutral colors, and I do love the shade of both dresses, but that leotard peaking through at the croch is just….blech.
But all of this is invalidated by how HORRIBLE her hair looks!
I like the white dress – so what if it’s impractical. I hate the chiffon one, though. It makes her hips look weird, and I don’t ever want to see people’s panties through their dresses. even if they are at least wearing them.
I can’t see illusion netting without also imagining an intricate ice dance routine in my head. If not for the attached mesh tee on the first one, I might have liked it. As it is, it is Ice Capades on the top and Chrysler Building on the bottom.
Dress #1 looks like those paper fans we’d fold out of our worksheets in math class when the the room was a bit warm and things got particularly boring. It’s definitely wearing her. Like a giant angry swarm of elementary-school paper fans.
Dress #2 looks like her pelvis is broadcasting her sign – ARIES (which is misleading as she’s a Pisces – I think she needs something from her water sign to put out that fire sign that is in her crotchal area) – below what is clearly a Miraclesuit maillot. The only miracle I see is that we’re not seeing more of her “miracle”.
First dress: sure, why not? I do think the top part could have been better executed, but overall it’s fun and I like fun. Second dress: no. Just no.

The pocket on the white dress — which I think is awesome — is not for lipstick or change. It is a place to rest her HAND and show off the sweet little tattoo on her wrist.
Ok, to be honest, and don’t get me wrong I love Riri and i totes love her bod, but I really do think the dresses she picked are suited to smaller, thinner, perhaps taller women? Idk. Either way, I think the first dress had potential until the neckline which I just don’t agree with… and I agree, all over the ground! Eek!

I voted ‘Fug’ on the first dress because I don’t like it on her. I actually think the dress itself is interesting-and-possibly-fabulous (although I’m not sold on the sheerness/tee-shirtiness of the top, and I hate the pocket), but it’s definitely wearing her, and not the other way around. And it makes her look chunky. I agree with a few previous commenters who have said it might work better on SWINTON, though I’m not sure about that color for her. I was going to make a Project Runway comment about the first one before I saw the commentary on the second one. It looks like the challenge was to go to a restaurant supply store and make a gown out of products available there. Christopher – who so deserved to go home weeks ago – made a little too much volume out of the dinner napkins.
Hee! The first one, top half, looks like another misguided Ri pasties attempt covered up last minute by a prudent stylist handy with a tiny stapler, who also had a plethora of wedding gown silk material samples at hand. (Picturing, “No more nip pasties, EVER”! Okay, maybe her stylist is also Joan Crawford/Faye Dunaway in my mind.)
The bottom of the first is very cool and intricate, but I bet it is dirty on the bottom.
The 2nd is night of a thousand scarves at 15 minutes before last call.
All I know is, I bought the same headband* she once wore and I thought was crazy for $9!! OK not the same same one. Today I’m wearing it and loving myself and loving her. So she is forgiven for anything today.

Pockets distroy the line on an evening dress. That’s why cute little evening purses with the handle on the back were invented.
First dress has a charm about it’s construction, but does bring back that fear of shoving my hands into the copier to clear a paper jam. Second dress, way too Danse Moderne. A guy in a fig leaf is going to sneak up and spin her around by that weird pale crotch layer any second.

I kind of like the first one because she looks fully clothed without being frumpy, and I like the hourglass shape of the Venetian blinds on her front. And I can’t wear white, so I’m always jealous of people who can. The second one might be pretty, with the way the colors blend, if it had a skirt. Actually, I think it’s like an extreme example of what sometimes happens on Project Runway, where the designer gets all caught up designing the top half of the dress and forgets about the bottom half, except that that usually just results in a really ugly skirt, not no skirt at all.

Both dresses look like she couldn’t fall asleep last night and in an effort to keep herself busy with…anything, she decided to make herself a couple of dresses. And since she was so obviously sleep-deprived the next morning, she loved what she had done and decided to wear them outside. Really, I think she just needs a nap, guys. Then she’ll be properly embarassed about both these get ups.
Agree with the commenters who said the first look would look great on Tilda Swinton and in a jewel color. Or on some tall, thinner, model.
As for the second look, the color washes her out and the slit/split is too high but the style of the dress isn’t bad.

Love the first dress! Crazy, sure, but beautifully so. The second, well. Meh. But more importantly, have you discussed her HAIR, or have I just missed it?
The first dress is pretty cool on the bottom half, but the top half is way off. The structure is all wrong IMO, it doesn’t follow her figure at all whereas the bottom is actually pretty flattering around the hip area.
I really like the top part of the second dress though. It is so pretty and kind of ethereal. I do not like the ‘split alllll the way up the leg’ thing. Why? It’s just classless. Also we know she has killer legs already, it would have been nice to see her in something elegant.

The first dress has no redeeming qualities at all for me. White is a tricky color on its own, though it can be pulled off without looking too bridal. However, while this doesn’t look bridal to me, it’s not the way I would imagine someone pulling off the look. It’s horrid. It’s like an Escher painting and I like those well enough, but I wouldn’t want to wear one. I don’t like the mermaid cut on any dress.
I could totally get behind the second dress if it weren’t cut all the way up to her pelvis, and if that weird purply brown layer was a different color that wasn’t so blah. That slit up the leg robs the dress of any real class or femininity, and just sort of reminds me of a horror movie where the homecoming queen gets sucked back into prehistory and has to tear up her dress in order to out run the velociraptors.

The white one sorta reminds me of that dress Marissa Tomei wore to this year Oscars, especially with all that volume/construction at the bottom. But Marisa’s dress was great because up top, it was relatively simple and the transition from all that busy-ness at the bottom to the relative simplicity at the top was gloriously done. Now RiRi’s dress, like Marisa’s love the busy-ness at the bottom but what the hell, instead of going into simplicity it just carries on with all that business, and maybe even becomes more, I just don’t. In the immortal words of Michael Kors, ‘that’s a whole lotta look!’
I like most of the execution here of the Frank Gehry princess dress, but the netting shirt underneath tackifies it down to showbizzy, and should be changed to silk or something to uphold the bravura of the dress.

I love Rihanna’s hair short, especially because her face is Barbie Doll. Without an edgy frame, her face, which I guess with favorable spin might be conveying “serene, symmetrical beauty,” makes me see instead “plasticized victim resigned to imprisonment in endless loop of pettily inhumane interactions and alienation” …probably because of the tabloids; but the association’s not my fault. It’s cultural…maybe manufactured by the entertainment industry puppeteers. Beats me. I have not had a puff in since I was divorced. The most awful thing related to quitting is the 1st 1 to 2 weeks. Thank God that those effects didn’t last and stuff got easier day by day due to the e-cig. You shouldn’t think quitting is impossible. Basically be strong and you likely will have success permanently.
