Fug or Fab: Sienna Miller

fug-or-fab

Okay, I need you guys to sit down. Okay, actually, I assume that you’re reading this sitting down, so I want you to stand up, and then sit down again. What I’m about to say is very shocking. Sienna Miller’s posture is terrible, and she would, I think, look much better if this were NOT a jumpsuit but rather a dress. HOWEVER: She does not look so terrible in it that I want to barf all over my keyboard and then run outside, screaming until I lose consciousness from lack of oxygen. If she were not standing as though it were too short on her torso — which I think is just a trick of the photo — she might look….okay. Maybe? I mean, you know, considering.

I realize that saying this is sort of the equivalent of saying, “that time I got robbed was WAY better than that time I got murdered,” but go with me. Let’s talk this out, guys. Let’s have that tough jumpsuit conversation. The longer I’ve sat here with this, the more I’ve hated it, but I realize that some of you don’t feel as strongly. In fact, I believe it’s possible that one of you reading this might actually be WEARING a jumpsuit.  RIGHT NOW. So let’s have the talk, guys.

the gathering around her crotch, together with her slouching, makes it look as if she’s suffering from a severe wedgie. anybody?

  2. Jenn

    That is a tapered-leg, front-ruched jumpsuit. HEINOUS

  3. Anonymous

I almost bought a jumpsuit this weekend and then realized I could never pee quickly again. But it was a little cute. Unlike this one.

  4. Nimble

But the sheer sparkly sleeves I like!

  5. Ranee

She may actually have to pee because she is holding her knees together. One more reason not to wear a jumpsuit. Her hair is fabulous though.

  6. DK

She looks great from the waist up (with the posture caveat, of course). The lower half is wretched.

Actually, I am undecided on the shoes.

  7. china

Dislike the ruched, tapered jumpsuit. Undecided on the shoes. Really like the sparkly sleeves, though.

  8. qwertygirl

I will comment as soon as I finish wiping the vomit off of my keyboard.

  9. Ace

Never have I seen a picture of someone in a jumpsuit and though “wow that looks really great and flattering on you.” They seriously need to be banned. Especially ones that are almost Hammer-pantesque. Dig the shoes though.

  10. Morgan

Love the sleeves, love the fresh makeup, love the easy, breezy hair…but not enjoying the jumpsuit at all. Really couldn’t do her figure any less favors.

  11. Alexa

The only acceptable “jumpsuit” is a pair overalls. With tractor or milk bucket accessory.

  12. GW

Gathering at the crotch/thigh AND a ruffle flap at the bustline? No thanks.

Also, the sequined chiffon shrug she paired with this reminds me of a similar bolero jacket my mother owned in the 80′s, which didn’t go over well then, either.

  13. Samantha

Ok, I’m not a big fan of jumpsuits. I think Sienna looks pretty good here though, except for the posture. However, I gotta admit, I really like rompers and think they look pretty cute a lot of the time. I am not ashamed to admit that I own 2. Granted, one looks like a dress when I wear it.

  14. anabels

The jumpsuit looks like it is meant to be a casual soft piece, the jacket is too dressed up to go with it. And forgodssake stand up straight woman! The ankle gathers could go as well a straight leg would be more flattering and avoid the baby’s romper suit thing.

I like jumpsuits for the same reasons I like dresses – minimal matching required and no spending all day trying to keep your damn shirt tucked in!

  15. Anonymous

LOVE the shoes. Great hair. The jumpsuit is wretched.

  16. Hannah

There is no excuse for wearing a jumpsuit; ever.

  17. djheydt

There are some times and places when jumpsuits are (sort of) appropriate. Those are the times and places where practicality and the ability to move around are of highest importance, and where one doesn’t really give a flying froob what one looks like, as long as one can get the work done.

And even when those conditions are met, it’s still a drag to remove them down to the three-quarters mark in order to pee.

So even under those conditions, much better to wear jeans and a shirt or jacket than a jumpsuit.

  18. MW

    BUT TEETH!

  19. a

so glad you brought attention to this!! while watching her on the late show other night i couldn’t stand how heavy and fake (and really, really boring) her hair looked. I’m holding the weight of it alone responsible for her poor posture.

  20. Shelly

I think she could pull this off if it were not for the slouch and the shoes. I think if she were showing some leg, the shoes would be lovely, but it looks like the jumpsuit pants are kind of baggy around her ankles and I just thing she needs an unfettered expanse of foot to go with those ankles.
Also, I would like to have her hair. :)

  21. Wren

And I thought my posture was bad.

That jumpsuit has managed to make her body look like that of a 10 year old boy – not the first curve visible. The posture doesn’t help matters. Great hair and makeup, though.

  22. val.

    No. Just no.

  23. anon ymous

one should wear a jumpsuit when one is JUMPING OUT of a PLANE. that’s pretty much the only time you should wear one.

  24. Kalleigh Hathaway

Eh, it’s a jumpsuit, and to me those are reserved for military and mechanics. Shoes would be okay if she could keep the strappy parts aligned instead of looking like she just crammed her feet into them two seconds ago. But the bigger infraction to me is the guy behind the Late Show banner dressed for winter except for the cheap flip flops. I hate anything showing off men’s toes, but if you’re covering every other square inch of you except face and hands, why leave the feet almost bare?

  25. Maria

I agree there are times when jumpsuits can be quite appropriate. The lobstermen I work with, for example, rock them. In bright yellow, no less.

But this? Gorgeous girl, great hair, great shoes. Jumpsuit: bad. Posture: very bad.

  26. naeelah

She only looks okay because the outfit, just taken from a distance, isn’t terrible. And she only looks okay because she’s standing still in a photo. We don’t have to see her from every side, moving. And trust me, no one looks good in the 360 mirror in a jumpsuit or romper. NO ONE. I have seen women who almost pulled it off, but in every case, IT WAS STILL A FRICKIN JUMPSUIT.

Anyway — in her case, you see that flap over the boobs? Imagine what that looks like from the side, blousing out. Heinous.

If she were wearing just a normal sleeveless blouse without the boob flap and black pants in a more flattering cut, she’d look good.

  27. Jamerica02

It’s a bit too Fallon Carrington Colby!

  28. Curses

I’m pretty sure my grandma in Boca wore this outfit (with the similar shoes, because she’s that kind of awesome) to MC her retirement community’s annual Salute to Broadway revue/variety show last winter. I’m not sure it was the best choice for her, either, but she still wore it better than Sienna. Plus, even with osteoporosis, Grammy stood up straighter.

  29. Sara

ahh, it started so good at the top, if only it went down into a cute little mini dress with a ruffle the same as on the top.

  30. Jess

I am not against the whole jumpsuit thing, they can be kind of cute. However, this thing is very unflattering and TAPERED. Nothing good comes out of tapered. Nothing. I don’t care what today’s fashion what’s us to believe. I repeat, nothing.

  31. Egnu Cledge

It doesn’t come through in the photo, but on the show, there was a painfully obvious layer of boob drapery that just hung out in front. If such a thing were conceivable, it actually made her chest look stumpy. And no matter how long I looked at it, I never could figure out if the gold sparkle sleeves were part of the outfit, of she was actually wearing a sheer jacket *under* the jumper. Heinous.

  32. Robin

Okay, bear with me…I HAVE SEEN A GOOD JUMPSUIT IN THE WILD! It was on a normal person at a music festival (by normal, I mean a non-celebrity. She was impossibly tall and slim and glamourous). She looked breezy and relaxed and lovely. So it is possible.

    That said, this one sucks.

  33. Cecily

    No.
    Jumpsuits.
    Take them away.
I agree with Alexa up there that they can only be pulled off on a tractor or holding a bucket of slop.
    Great word, slop.
That outfit would have been perfectly lovely if it had been a simple long black dress with the wrap, which I like.

Her hair and makeup look great as well.

  34. Rayna

Being as I am kinda so-so on Sienna Miller, and VERY so-so on jumpsuits, the only thing I was on board with here were the sleeves, which I COVET. But now you’re telling me that they are not even attached but are rather a wrap or shrug?

    Gosh.

Where can I get the shrug?

  35. Suzy

No, Jessica, NO. Maybe you just need a cup of tea and then a nice long nap, and you’ll be back to your right self.

  36. yeahandalso

    1) This outfit is hideous, except maybe the shrug if you pretend that it is still 2002 and people are earing those.

    2) All polls about Sienna Miller need an option: I am biased because I hate her, which I am just in doing because Vogue and every other magazine forced a completely useless actress down our throats and dear god has ANYBODY EVER seen her in a movie that isn’t GI Joe?

  37. vandalfan

Burn her? Well, you could also build a bridge out of her, she looks like she weighs the same as a duck…. (ahem, sorry) Make up and hair, nice, pretty and light. Sleeves- sparkly! The rest? Well, if this was bright orange, I could say I’ve seen this many a Monday morning at arraingments of the weekend DUI’s, with County Jail stamped on the back.

  38. dinsdale

Hate jumpsuits. Tapered jumpsuits should come with special circumstances-type sentencing.

General question to fug-readers/posters out there: Is it just me sliding into middle-age fuddy duddy-ness, or is fashion completely insane right now? I see the stupidest clothes everywhere. What gives?

  39. Becky

    hmmmm…. I think it’s stuck in her bellybutton?no?

  40. simaria

Ok I totally need to work right now but this is me time.
Her jumpsuit, fabric and all looks like something you’d find at forever 21…in the clearance rack and is that a sequined mesh bolero I spy?

How does she go to the bathroom in it? Girlfriend needs to go once an hour on the hour like a child being potty trained to pull all that off. And sit nekked whilst she does her business.

  41. Kate

I find her really annoying, but concede that Sienna Miller is both pretty and well toned/proportioned. If a jumpsuit makes HER look so lumpy, there’s no way that they’ll make any of the rest of us look good. Oh, and I hate the shoes – it looks like the jumpsuit’s come unravelled at the bottom and is eating her feet.

LOL at Dinsdale – I too think fashion’s deranged at the moment!

  42. Gina

This outfit has so many of the current trends I hate all thrown together:
Sheer, overly long sleeves — gah!
    Sternum overexposure — oy!
    Ruffles — bleh!
    Jumpsuit — yick!
    Hammer pants — YIKES!
    Tapering — ugh!
Shoes with tons of little straps — ouch!
    This is one big ‘WHY?!?’

  43. pixiestyx

This getup requires magenta lipstick, purple eye shadow, big hair with mall/claw bangs and pointy-toed spike-heeled pumps with white ruffled ankle socks.

  44. byllygyn

I’m confused as to why this is a fug or fab. Fugly, fug, fug, fug. I’m not a fan of this person, though I’m not sure why since obviously I don’t know her and I’ve never seen any of her movies. Every now and then she wears something really cute and it annoys me. This outfit makes me smile.

  45. billyjean

The only time one is allowed to wear a jumpsuit is if your name is Owen Wilson and you’re in the movie Bottle Rocket. THAT jumpsuit is awesome. HE-larious.

  46. KTW

I think the jumpsuit/shrug combo is actually creating the impression of bad posture.

  47. Louvren

    Yahoo!

  48. Kaeleigh

How do you know she is a witch?

  49. Katie

I like the “are tricky to pull off question:….. initially I was like, yes finally they’ve thought of what I’ve always been thinking about, but then I realised you were meaning “Pull off” fashion wise…
What I was thinking is how you would get a jumpsuit “off” when you’re in a hurry to go to the bathroom!, they would be tricky to pull off in a hurry and basically you’d have to completely undress just to go! That would be my main reason to never wear one…. also they aren’t that flattering, no matter how hot you are they aren’t easy to…. pull off…. in both sense of the word!

  50. Karen

Is that a nursing shirt? That would explain the ruffle on the bodice. Please, for the love of Pete, please don’t let Sienna Miller be breastfeeding anyone!

  51. jim

    TERRIBLE !!!

  52. lovelyloey

Harem pants jumpsuits are gross. They take about about 2 feet of your real height.
On the other hand, skinny pants jumpsuit and wide-leg jumpsuits can be real fab. Look at those on ASOS.com. Love them to bits.

  53. lady_wraith

i saw this pic yesterday and said out loud “Sienna those shoes deserve better!!” and now i might add “and that shiny shiny hair of yours”, jumsuits, why would you wear that? are the pants are shirt combo too complicated? not innovative enough? c’mon!

  54. phoenixrose

is she slouching or is that jumpsuit/shrug combo so horrible that it makes the rest of her want to crawl inside itself in shame?

  55. Amelia

I’m not a fan of any garment that basically requires you to get mostly naked in order to pee. It all began with footie pajamas–so cute, right, except you’re four years old and have to wrestle out of the things in the middle of the night to go wee, and one sleeve always winds up in the bowl, and I’m sorry, but any time I see a jumpsuit I just flash back to having to zip myself back into a wet, slightly smelly garment–or to the time when I actually WORE a jumpsuit, used a public stall that didn’t lock properly, and had someone walk in on me sitting there bare to the waist.

Oh, and they’re just not flattering.
    On anyone. Ever.
There’s a reason they dress convicts in them. They. are. humiliating.

  56. Katy

I really feel like all that bunching is giving the outfit the appearance that it is stretched taught and she can’t stand up straight because it is pulling so tight. I also feel like the shoes and sleeves are fighting for attention. However, though I may not like Sienna Miller, I can admit that her face and hair look lovely.

  57. Christina

Sienna Miller is a big meh anyway… And what’s with the posture? Can’t she stand straight or what?

  58. Kara

    yuk.

and those shoes, yuk. don’t doubt about it just… yuk.

  59. rachel

I’ve been staring at this photo for a while, and I think she IS standing up straight. It’s that awful jumpsuit with the awkward ruching combined with the strange way the sleeves start somewhere below her shoulders and the inexplicable boob-flap that are conspiring to make her look slouchy.

  60. Saffron

Frankly, I am way too distracted wondering why the guy behind her is wearing flip-flops.

  61. Amber

First I have to say that I am pretty anti-Sienna. Not only is she a fairly crappy actress and a hussy, but she called my city “Shittsburgh” in a national publication. She and I will never see eye-to-eye and we’ll never be friends. So that said, it’s hard to ever say anything nice about her and this outfit is not helping.

The jumpsuit is just plain awful. If I had that bod, I would surely be on the best dressed list every day! She abuses her good genes by going out dressed like crap. Plus she’s kind of an a-hole.

  62. Jeni

I’m totally distracted by the fact that the crotch is around her knees. Why would anyone wear something that makes them look like they’re carrying a load in their pants?

  63. Kristen

Jessica, don’t go over to the dark side!!!

How could this be the jumpsuit to seduce you???

    Yikes :)

  64. Cary

I wish you had a voting option entitled, “HORRENDOUS!” b/c I would click it without hesitation.

  65. Heidi

Jumpsuit? What jumpsuit? NEED THOSE SHOES.

  66. Anna

I think she’s responsible for promoting nearly every awful trend I can think of in the last five years. Jumpsuits, unwashed-looking hair, acid-wash jeans revived, stupid hats, fringe where it does not belong, formal shorts, no pants, boinking married people, and let’s not forget the time she tied her pants shut with twine. TWINE, people.

Can she go away now? I don’t want her to come to physical harm, I just want her fame to go away so I don’t have to hear about her anymore.

  67. LizJ

Did anyone look at the enlarged photo? It appears to have a waistband, which would make it a pants-and-top combo in the same color. That makes the real question: why would anyone design separates to look like a jumpsuit?

  68. RenaissanceGrrl

Nope, all jumpsuits are still made of fail.

  69. Sonia

Jessica, throw out your Diet Coke NOW as I fear it has been laced with crack! You just said that Sienna Miller (oh so meh) wearing a jumpsuit (which is never, ever, ever, EVER acceptable) looks okay. If Intern George did not have a restraining order against me I would beg him to go to you and make you well again. Please come back to us soon…

  70. L

No jumpsuits ever, EVER, ever. As soon as my eyes reached Sienna’s waist on that picture, I could only think of how much better that outfit would look if it were a full-length maxidress instead of that hideous jumpsuit.

  71. Caitie

Would be much nicer as a dress.. In fact as I was scrolling down I kept thinking it looked good until I realised it didn’t stop where I needed it to stop and the jumpsuit ruined all the good thoughts. Jumpsuits as shorts actually look alright I reckon but not as full on pants. THAT trend should be BURNED!

I’ve seen Padma Lakshmi work a jumpsuit. (A Halston-style one with wide legs.) She is the ONLY person I will allow. Otherwise, they are a monstrosity..

  74. aditi

I actually saw her in this on Dave Letterman, and thought the neck looked very funny- as in it looked unnaturally flat.

I mean- even accounting for the fact that she is a skinny celebrity and probably two sizes below a size zero, it looked unnatural.

Of course, she did not help matters at all by slouching on the couch throughout. It was like- at least with the slouch, she should not look ironed flat, and yet she did; and the whole thing looked very wierd.
