Fug or Fab: Tina Fey

fug-or-fab

I want to like this, for despite Tina’s Aniston-like propensity for the little black dress, this one is at least twenty percent something else:

The trouble is, I can’t decide if that twenty percent looks like a far more interesting dress, or like a chunk of a tie-dyed Prom dress. Or both. It’s almost like there’s both not enough of it and way too much, kind of like white truffle oil, because a little goes such a long way but oh I want to taste more of it but if I do then oh my God it’s so good I want to bathe in it and drink it from a straw but if I do that my arteries will explode and I’ll die not knowing how Lost ends and THAT IS NOT OKAY.

  1. Courtney Waldon

If the 20% took over, I fear it’d cross way over into fug. The Snooki tribute on her head I can do without, the shoes are so bland and the remaining 80% of the dress isn’t much better.

  2. Courtney Waldon

Plus, do I see a Spanx band across her belly button?

  3. Joanna

DESMOND!!! (That’s all I have to contribute)

  4. vandalfan

Hideous. The 1970′s called and wants their dress back, and could there be more boring shoes? I think not.

  5. Maria

As Tim Gunn would say, I’m concerned. The fit across the hip is too tight, and the blue area seems like and afterthought.

I’d like it so much more if she embraced the Little Black Dress-ness of it and got rid of the blue, the fit problem was solved, and she added an absolutely fabulous necklace and bracelet.

  6. Rayna

OK, agreed, a Snooki-do is not her most flattering look, shoes are boring and fit in the hippage area is problematic.

But I give her snaps for the spunk of trying a little accent variation on the LBD.

And I’m down with the drapey effect on the shoulder. (Pollyanna grin) I think it’s neat!

  7. Claire's mom

First off, I luuuuuvvvvv Tina and my husband has made it clear that should she suddenly be become available and wander into San Jose, CA, he’d dump me like a hot potato for her. Good to know I have job security – Hiss! Back, Fey Woman!

Anyhoodle, it looks like a blue sparkly boa constrictor is wending its way up her hip and about to choke her in her LBD. Or, a very sad attempt by the artsy 11th grader in her Home Ec class (do they even offer this in school anymore?) to “push the envelope” beyond the same ol’ wraparound skirt. And the Bristol bump isn’t doing it for me, either. She’s way better than this. Come on, Teens, let’s forget the fugly dress and go find us a martini or twelve.

  8. Liz

Because there are no comments on the Fabiola post, I will have to say here that I nearly choked when I realized she is standing in front of a bunch of little books entitled “Classy.” Hee.

As for this dress – hate. Weird fit, weird meshing of dresses.

  9. Erin

It’s the hair. The hair is killing it for me.

  10. Becca

I’m with Erin. I can’t view the dress objectively with that hair.

  11. Stephanie

Love it. Love the dress, love the hair, LOVE Tina. And whatever doubts might arise about the dress, she will squash with a witty joke and awkward yet pleasing smile!

  12. Claudine

I like the shape of the dress, even the shoulder, just not the blue fabric… Mostly because of the pattern. If it was a solid color, and a solid line rather than the funky 80s triangle edges I would have liked it better. I still think it’s in her “better” category than “worst”, if I grade on a Tina-scale.

  13. Lizzie

I like it, but mostly because I just love Tina Fey.

  14. Blanche

Bleargh. Tina Fey is a fantastic comedic genius. Yet this dress is moronic. How can we make sense of this vast, gaping “irony” (in the Alanis Mmoorrissette sense)?

I understand the need to promote. I just wish there were another way for Madam Fey. I don’t feel right, evaluating a talented actor-writer’s clothes, even if she has a lot of money. We should probably still feel amazed that she is not wearing a brown sweatshirt over a (slightly different shade of) brown cords, which is what I’m wearing right now.

  15. Joan of Argghh!

Sarah Palin could rock that dress in about 3 sizes smaller. That’s a dress for a runner’s legs.

  16. Sherri

I do not hate this. The hair isn’t a thrill, but it is not whackdoodle, so the break from everyone’s whackdoodle is pleasant. The dress is a little on the dull side, but that’s ok — Tina has plenty of personality to overcome a dull dress. And it isn’t DEADLY dull. The blue is, at least, enough to pique my curiosity.

Yes, the dress could fit better, but it doesn’t reveal anything terribly embarrassing, doesn’t appear painful. It’s not too short, too long, too low, or too high. It’s not cutting off circulation or dragging and bagging in questionable ways. It has the requisite number of sleeves, no puzzling cut outs, and no bugs crawling on it. All of these things are in its favor. It’s just A Bit Dull. It needs a story.

The more I look at the blue fabric, the more it looks like some sort of jaunty scarf pressed into service after a terrible accident occurred which ripped hunks off the LBD. Really, when I think of it that way, I’m rather amazed how well Jaunty Scarf has lept to the rescue of the seriously maimed LBD, enabling everyone to carry forth. It’s kinda heroic that way. Yes! The dress has a heroic, even epic story of chaos, sacrifice, and last minute escapes!

So that means I’m entertained, and I give the dress a pass.

  17. Annie

Tina, I love you, but 1987 called and wants its hair back.

  18. Alisa

I have to give Tina props for trying to spice up a LBD… I don’t hate the dress, but I don’t love it either because it’s boring… I’m torn. I want to love it, because it’s Tina and you know she’s making some witty comments about the hair…
Whatever, the dress is fine, I wouldn’t be opposed if she met her girlfriends for a martini in that dress, just as long as I was part of the clique.

  19. Kate

It’s like a Franken-dress, and both sides are ill-fitting. Plus I think the hair is totally wrong for this look. Overall not terrrrrible, but not great or flattering, either.

LOST, I know, right? Last night I was wondering if I suddenly found out I had a terminal disease with like one week to live, would the producers of LOST tell me how everything ends if it was my last dying wish? Because I would really need that. Which is kind of sad.

  20. Dani

I think I made this in home-ec one year. Probably in eighth grade. Along with the prairie skirt.

  21. albeli

Love the dress (but she needs to go up a size), hate the hair, and the shoes are so boring.

  22. sideways world

I cannot stand Oprah and I watched it just to see what Tina would do. She asked O, “If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive,… what would you order?” O is so lame that she went ahead and told her she would order fried chicken to eat with Jesus. The point being, life would be much funnier if we all only answered the exact- not implied- question being asked of us by Ms. Fey. I don’t care who O eats her chicken with, just like I don’t care to comment on anything other than the direct question Tina is clearly asking us here. She simply wants to know if we laugh at her joke (the dress), not all that implied stuff like if her shoes and hair and spanx are funny too. They are, but she doesn’t care about those things- so just as Oprah should have said only “fried chicken,” I say, “funny fug dress.” That’s all.

  23. oliviacw

I don’t mind the blue stuff on the side of the dress, but the bunchiness on the shoulder is just wierding me out.

  24. your neighborhood librarian

It is NOT like white truffle oil. Nope. What is the dress that is the equivalent of white truffle oil? Hm. Christina Hendricks’s Siriano at the Golden Globes. Heaven, but a drop more of it – say one more ruffle – would make you not be able to see anything but giant peachy boobs for the rest of the evening.

  25. deb

That’s really funny because I was just thinking the other day that if I died before I found out how Lost ended I would probably end up roaming the earth eternally trying to find out the ending…ha, how morbid is that. :P

  26. Laura

I think this style works well on her body. Oddly enough, I’m not sure the blue does much for her as a colour.

  27. Miss Mouse

I love Tina. This dress, however, is a touch unflattering about the hip area, and she is so not overly wide anywhere, let alone the hips.

  28. replica watches

  29. L

It’s okay. I guess. Or something. Yawn. Hmm, I wonder how many channels are showing Law & Order right now…

  30. Sandy

I dunno; this dress just looks very uncomfortable and weird. The blue bit seems stiff and oddly placed and the whole dress looks about one size too small. The tight creases across the hips/crotch make her look a little fattish, which I don’t think is the look she was trying to achieve (and she’s NOT FAT).

So my question is: why does Fey continue to torture herself in this Liz Lemon-y manner?

  31. NYCGirl

    1) I don’t like the pouffy shoulder thing.
    2) I, too, have had “What if I die before the LOST finale?” moments.

  32. Sian

Oh, boy. Not loving the fit on that. Also the way the shoulder bunches is a tad Quasimodo-esque as opposed to stylish.

  33. Lillian

I’m pretty sure the side panel did not come from another dress, but is in fact made of a late 80s “laser” school picture backdrop. Which perhaps makes the dress vintage?

And I have to agree with the above comment: “DESMOND!!!”

  34. corianne

Its not bad, per se, maybe a bit forgettable. I do like shoulder pouf and side color, agree that the shoes are blah, and the hair is… Hm. The hair is too young. The bottom looks like it could’ve gone up a size. My mother would look at that and say, “uh huh, get the next one. This is pulling too much; do you see the creases? That is not *becoming* on you. blahblahblah” until she got a complex.

  35. sarah

    Love the hair!

  36. Ranee

Hate the dress, love the attitude.

  37. Bee

It’s kind of like someone started colouring the dress with an exciting metallic blue (oops, going a bit outside the lines on the shoulder) and then ran out and switched to basic black. Or vice versa.

However my biggest problem with the whole dress is that it’s in front of a poster of her in what looks like a much, much better dress of charming neckline and swoonsome skirt.

(Perhaps if there was a Desmond as an accessory this could work??)

  38. DIANE

The dress is not flattering at all. The shoes look like they’ve been sitting in the back of her closet for years. And, somehow, she forgot to comb her hair before she left the house. Geezus…all that money and she can’t find a decent look?

  39. Teresa

Your blog is hilarious. I need more of this in my life.

    http://www.invasionista.com

  40. lou

Not finding the dress heinous. It’s mostly that it doesn’t fit properly and it doesn’t flatter her figure at all. This kind of cut is meant for tall women. When you have that kind of fuller figure, this just accentuates areas that are better left unaccentuated. The shoes are blah. And there was little thought put into accessories. And, it all makes her look very very pale. She looks as though she’s at a business meet-and-greet, and had to take off her (more flattering) jacket due to hot flashes (which I totally sympathize with).

We’ll just write this one off.

  41. snorgler

    and may I add… DESMOND!

  42. Breda

If that fabric is what I think it is, it’s Christian Siriano’s AWESOME blue print developed from a shoreline photograph (I have a pair of his Payless shoes in that, and I LOVE them), in which case I totally want to see more of it before I judge this dress. As it stands? Eh.

  43. Jackie

Ewwwwww, Tina, please stop, look at yourself, and then turn that bus around girlfriend– you are DANGEROUSLY close to veering into Generic Celebrity Look-Alike Land (and by “DANGEROUSLY close” I do mean that you’re there already but you’re Awesome Tina Fey so you get a little leeway). Please return to your previously de riguer “understated cool” posthaste– Ellen Page still needs someone to look up to!!!!!

  44. SPJava

Good Lord! Did the same person who pouffed up the blue shoulder on the dress pouf up Ms. Fey’s hair? Does she not possess a mirror or, as Joan Rivers likes to say, a gay friend.

The look on Tina’s face seems to betray that despite the hands on her hip attitude “pose” she must have caught a glimpse of herself in the car windows getting out of the limo and realizes what a disaster this all is; including the non exsistent none too flattering make-up.

Sartorially Fey is now synonymous with Feh.

Shame since she clearly doesn’t have to be. Think simple Sister and go with it.

  45. Crystal

Yep, it’s fug. Regardless, she could wear a burlap jumpsuit, and I’d still give her a fab. Tina Fey can do no wrong in my book.

  46. cayenne

Hmm, I should check that my mum’s basement hasn’t been burgled. That blue crap looks like it comes from a bridesmaid’s dress I wore in 1992, which was borderline spontaneous-combustible, and which lives forever in a cedar closet chez mum so I can win bets about who wore the most hideous dress.

I always win, so Tina, you lose.

  47. ProPalin

And the Bristol bump isn’t doing it for me
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Bristol? As in Palin?

It’s all about President oh sorry, was daydreaming, Palin with this clod of a woman.

Stick with the Sarah wig and outfits, Tina. That is when you look your best.

    Gorgon. Yuck.

  48. Ron Chancellor

Look at Tina in the April edition of Esquire and tell me that she shouldn’t fire whatever dog groomer she currently employs as her stylist. Seriously, never have I seen a woman this hot bring the frump as consistantly as Tina does on the Red Carpet. The dress, meh. Shoes, meh again. The hair is simply a crime.

  49. marcia

    it doesn’t fit. Start there.

  50. HJ

the hair! how does such a clever funny woman manage to look every time like she’s trying really hard to look like a boring actress and FAIL SO MISERABLY! Just dress wacky! You’re tina fey! I hope she reads these comments.

  51. Sajorina

The dress is fine, she looks good in it. But, the shoes are so bad they make her look like a High School Principal or a Social Worker.

  52. A

I am so glad someone else has that fear – of dying before knowing how Lost ends. Like Hurley when Rousseau acknowledges the cursed-ness of the numbers and he collapses in a hug around her, I hug around you.

Also, why couldn’t the whole dress have been blue?

  53. womanofwords

I love Tina, but I hate the dress and I hate the hair even more. You can do better than this Tina, don’t make me sad.

I love Tina Fey. She’s absolutely awesome, and can wear whatever she wants, in my opinion. That being said, this dress isn’t so much fug, as just ‘meh’.

  56. drawing tablets

I’m willing to forgive her that dress because she is such a funny lady, that I’m hoping that maybe, just maybe, this was on purpose. I don’t believe it, but one can always hope.
