Totally agree re: Maria Sharapova. If this were all one length, I’d love it (it would look best as a minidress, I think). The mullet is totally unnecessary and adds nothing.
Definitely right there with you.
And is… something a little… off, with Venus’ face? I didn’t recognize her at all, but maybe that’s for the best.
I seriously thought Sharapovamysharona was Blake Lively. is the mullet dress Marchesa?
Venus is still dealing with sickle cell, right? I’m pleased she dragged up the energy to put on a sheet and go out in public. GET WELL. TENNIS MISSES YOU.
No, she has Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune rheumatic disease. But I agree, I didn’t recognize her at first either (although I blame the hair).
She has Sjogren’s syndrome not sickle cell. She probably wouldn’t be a professional athlete if she had sickle cell.
What’s going on with the tail of that dress, though? That’s one strong ass gust of wind.

Each one has serious issues: Droopy hem, crushed material, uninspired braids and design, dated stripper gear. Get it together ladies!
co-signing.
Omg, I feel so sorry for Maria Sharapova! She’s posing and trying to look fabulous and her dress is misbehaving without her having a clue. It’s like having a “Kick Me” note stuck to her back.
I feel like this shouldn’t have been a “Fug” so much as an “Omg, you poor thing.”
I love Venus’ purple dress – it’s so nice to see her with something covering her properly. Yes it’s crinkly, but at least none of her assets are hanging out and her hair looks great.
That’s Serena in the purple.
I love Maria’s red satin shoes that match her undoubtedly real ruby earrings. I figured her dress was Stella McCartney design, and the ironing board sticking out the back was structural, and deliberate.
The only dress worth commenting on is the mullet and I am actually going to skip is and just admit I have drooling mad love for those shoes!
I don’t even understand what this event is supposed to be. Female athletes now have to walk the red carpet like actresses and models? I find this completely bizarre and somehow a step backward for female athletes everywhere. Can you imagine if Billy Jean King or Martina Navratilova had been expected to something this ridiculous?
Only they would have never agreed! HATE the way female athletes are expected to glam up for photo shoots etc these days – it’s their athletic prowess which should matter, not their looks.
It’s a party — they’re not being asked to glam up on the court. They’re dressing up for a shindig just the way anyone else would; the difference is, they’re famous, so they get their pictures taken. I think it’s misguided to claim that this is a step backward for female athletes. I’d argue that demanding that female athletes only run around in sweatpants or their athletic gear, and being irritated if they expose a girly/fancy side, is worse because it’s proliferating the idea that only so-called butch girls or tomboys are into sports.
Are the male tennis pros at the party too? If so, we demand to see the photos.
OK, it’s a party that’s fine. But I was referring more to the incessant glamming up of female athletes for magazine photoshoots etc – do male athletes have to do that? No. If they want to then that’s fine but given how awkward some of those shoots look I can’t help but think that some of them are pressured into it because of this need to conform to a certain idea of femininity.
It’s the Wimbledon player party. Of course the female players are going to attend and dress up. I’d say they really enjoy the opportunity to have some glamourous fun before the stress of the most prestigious tournament begins. There is a player party before all of the major tournaments.
Anyway, I love love love Maria’s shoes.
Those shoes the Pove is wearing are fierce. FIERCE, I say!
Oops, I meant to edit the headline to take out the WP for Serena. Because although she looks fierce, the dress isn’t great. ALL FIXED NOW. Confusion over.
My favorite part of tennis star fashion is their sock tan! Once it has been seen, it can’t be unseen.
Love the traction comment!
I thought it was static electricity in the first pic.
Maria had the right idea & then she destroyed it with the mullet… That dress would be AWESOME without it! And, the earrings & shoes are TO DIE FOR! The other ones… Just NO!
Everyone saying they love the shoes? Shoes that high are proven to wreck your knees and your back. Whenever I see female athletes wearing sky-high heels in order to follow fashion’s dictates of what a sexy woman should look like, I want to weep. Nothing over 6cm, ladies.
Can I just say….I totally agree with the assessment of the fashion right here, but I CANNOT agree that the French Open was a snooze after the Williams sisters got knocked out! Did you SEE that last match? I was at the gym, and I was grinning like an idiot during the last few points, and I may or may not have shed a tear when Sharapova won. ::tennis dork::
I can see her just jerking that dress off the backdrop.
