Fug/Fab Face-Off: Debra Messing vs Jenna Dewan

Two celebs hit the front rows in bright pink today, one simple and one a tad more unusual, so why not compare apples to oranges? Although it’s not even that, really. It’s like comparing Red Delicious to … Fuji, or Gala, or that Honeycrisp thing that costs a bajillion bucks a pound.

Let’s begin:

This is the best I’ve seen Debra Messing look in a while. Well, there’s something funky going on with her lipstick, but the dress is great — which it had better be, because she’s at a Michael Kors show, and thus dressed in Kors, and if he’d put her in a shirt made of pants it would seem awfully unkind.

Contrast this very simple pink with a slightly more detailed one on Mrs. Channing Tatum:

It’s not bad, but I can’t help feeling like she is tongue-tied — as in, there is a tongue tied around her pelvis.

I love that dress on Debra Messing. It is so fresh and lovely on her. And I am enjoying her in Smash, so there’s that, too.

    • Lucile Austero

Yes and yes. The dress is great and I love the shoes and how awesome is she in Smash? Very awesome.

  2. Courtney

Wait…honeycrisp cost a ton a lb?! Shit, I never check the receipt but always buy those!!

    • Olivia

Yeah, they are more expensive (about a buck more per lb here) but worth every penny!

    • Kara K

They’re so delicious, unlike their wrongly named red and green competitors.

      • Colleen

Never buy apples with “Delicious” in their name. It’s always a LIE.

      • Halo

Red Delicious right off the tree is the best apple you will ever eat. It does not ship well, and turns mealy and horrible. I’m from WA, and we used to have apple machines (like candy machines, only better) in middle school and you could get two small, cold Red Ds for a quarter. Crisp and awesome!

  3. Sally

I think both are pretty nice, but i voted for Debra Messing because this is soooo much better than what I usually see her in.

    • Eliza Bennett

Ditto–much better than D.Mess’ usual. And I always vote for what I would choose to wear in public. I don’t think any other human could wear a tube dress with tongue.

  4. Amy

If you are going to a Van Halen concert and wear a Van Halen shirt to said concert, you are “That guy.” However, if you are going to a Michael Kors fashion show and you wear Michael Kors to said show, are you still not, “That guy.” ??? Or is it the exact opposite in the fashion world?

  5. Kristan

Not fair! Where’s the “both” button?

  6. Miss Tee

I gave it to Debra, even though I’m sad that her lips have gone MIA. Everyone needs lips!

Her shoes are definitely better than Mrs. Tatum’s. Also the tongue. It’s weird.

  7. Dinkenesh

I love Debra Messing’s dress, but I wish she’d smile. The pursed-lip look is really not something flattering on a 40-something woman. Hell, it’s not a good look on anyone, but it at least has a place on Jersey Shore. Not on her. Not while wearing Michael Kors. Not at Fashion Week.

Ok, I’m done being my mom now.

  8. jen

I like Debra’s dress, but despite being spanxed to death, she really could use an inch or two more leeway around the thighs, yes? It looks like she can’t walk or move in it, and that’s just…. not right. Women need to be able to walk in their clothes, particularly something that COULD be so all-around terrific as this sheath…

  9. wtfnyc

Hate the hair and the liplessness on DM, but her dress is much better. What on earth is Mrs. Magic Mike’s* dress tongue even made of? SO. WEIRD.

(*Yes, I am counting down the days until The Male Stripper Movie opens. DON’T JUDGE ME.)

    • Emily

I also am dying for that movie to open. I am overcome with shame, but it’s true. I am without question going to see it.

  10. nmlhats

I want to vote for neither. The dress on Messing is better than the other one, but I think she looks pretty awful in that color.

    • anny

Neither. And double neither on both shoes.

    • Tailypo

Oh thank god it isn’t just me. Messing looks awful — the color is vile and the cut is just meh, the fit is a bit off in the thighs and the length does her no favors. The other one is more flattering in the overall cut though of course it goes all weird and tonguey, and the fabric concerns me (as Tim Gunn would say).

  11. Emily

Courtney – honeycrisps are $1 each at Trader Joe’s (in Chicago, at least) and more at the grocery store. I am going to go broke buying those apples. They’re just so delicious!

    • Patricia

Those apples are the best. Developed at the U here in Minnesota! ;)

      • Claire

As a Minnesotan myself, I can tell you the way to pick a good Honeycrisp is to look for a lot of stripes on the skin. It’s not as pretty, but if there are streaks of yellow and red, it means there are more natural sugars going through the apple. Yum!

Also, though I love Step Up and believe every woman secretly mourns the fictional lost ballet opportunities of her youth, I cannot bring myself to vote for someone who gets to sleep with Channing Tatum.

      • Mooshki

Yep, go MN! They’re a child of Keepsakes, which are even yummier, but are too tiny to be commercially viable. Although, you’d think they’d catch on, what with the popularity of the tiny Cuties.

  12. TaraMisu

    Honeycrisps are worth every penny!

Debra looks fabulous, this is a well done for her.

I don’t know who the other person is, but all I see is a tongue now, thanks H!

  13. PeggyO

I love DM’s dress, but her hair is currently just the wrong shade to wear that pink. Thus, she loses.

  14. Sandra

The second one looks like a satin pareo over an Esther Williams swimsuit. And the shoes are totally and horribly wrong.

  15. Molly

Jenna’s would be cute, if not for the stupid sarong-tongue thing. So if we’re going on dresses alone, Debra wins, but I agree with the lipstick atrocity. And she ought to have her hair natural, she looks so great with her insane curls.

  16. Sarie

Jenna is so pretty and seems so nice but I almost always hate what she wears. I just don’t get her style.

  17. Olivia

Jenna’s dress is a bit odd, but I like the makeup/hair better. Just wish she would have worn a better shoe. The one’s she has on would be more appropriate with something casual. I see what Debra was trying to do with the no lip- let the dress speak for its self, but that is far too neutral.

  18. Natalie

Honeycrisp apples are AMAZING,. despite the fact that they cost about $3.99/pound, which is over $1 per apple. Still awesome.

  19. Wordphreak

Jenna’s shoes are tragic, and Messing’s feet hurt.

  20. cc

Jenna looks cute and sort of club-ish. Deborah looks appropriately fashion-like.

  21. jeez

Debra Messing’s hair is painful to my eyes. The color and the style are just wrong. For her, specifically, and I think for the world in general. Her facial expression is killing me…smugness meets gastrointestinal distress.

  22. val.

I don’t like being matchy-matchy all the time, but I’m honestly not a fan of DM’s gold belt and black shoes. (Even though I like them both separately).

I don’t much like those beige shoes with the second dress, either, though.

  23. Kelly

I love Debra’s dress, but the missing lips and the hair are throwing me. To me she’ll always be a curly hair person. It looks great on her and she shouldn’t try to disown it.

  24. tchotchke

Sorry, but redheads should not wear pink, that dress looks like something my mother wore to PTA meetings in the 60s (translation: respectably frumpy with hamhock shoulders) and the hair looks like a wrung-out mop.

The other wins because she’s got the hair and eyes for hot pink and the bod to wear a tongue wrap — although she only gets my vote in comparison.

  25. Kyasarin

I can’t vote. I like Messing’s dress and styling better, but I hate pink on redheads. If this had been another color, it would’ve been a win for me.

  26. Maisie

Can’t get past Debra’s awful straightened hair! She seriously rocks those curls and always should. SOOOO much more flattering than straight. (Actually, this is generally the case on anyone over the age of 40: curls soften, people!

  27. Sajorina

I prefer Debra’s, which looks great on her, seems more appropriate for the occasion and is styled perfectly! Jenna looks like a garden wedding bridesmaid and her shoes are a snooze! Both dresses are pretty, but Debra wins!

  28. Amy

I voted for Jenna-I am clearly in the minority, but I like her shoes! Debra’s toes are hanging off the end of hers, and I think she just looks generally uncomfortable. Hate the hair and makeup!

  29. KK

I also voted for Jenna–I think she looks great. The dress fits her absolutely perfectly and it’s a great color for her.

  30. vandalfan

Team Fuji. The second gal has a satin sweater tie around her waist. Perhaps she was surprised by That Time Of The Month.

  31. Mahastee

I was hoping that the days of artificially bamboo-straight hair were over. Apparently not :(

  32. juliet

It’s baffling that anyone with Debra Messing’s natural curl would ever straighten it. Your real hair is awesome, Debra! Leave it alone!

  33. Jules

I like Debra’s classic rather than droopy dress,
but Channing’s hair, make-up and shoes.

  34. Kara K

The dress and colour are very effective on Debra, even if the colour especially makes me miss her giant, curly, Will&Grace hair. That was some great hair, y’all.

She’s looking great – aside from the lack of colour on the lip – but I miss that hair.

  35. Remi

I had to look for ages to see Debra Messing in there, I’m still not convined but not ruling out the possibility either.

  36. Faye

Although not a fan of Debra’s overall styling, I looove her address. FauxEmily needs to wear that on Revenge. Actually, I might need to wear that in real life :) .

    • Faye

I meant Debra’s dress, not address. I have Monday morning head on Friday ;) .

  37. Heather

But Honeycrisps are AMAZING!!! And if you buy them at Costco, not any pricier than the other (inferior) apple varieties. I freaking love those apples :)

  38. na

My jaw dropped at Channing Tatum. She is absolutely gorgeous.

  39. Find Out on Commercial Film

Generally I do not learn post on blogs, but I wish to say that this write-up very forced me to take a look at and do so! Your writing taste has been amazed me. Thank you, quite great article.

  40. Eli

I have a hard time feeling love for Debra Messing, because even though she SAYS she did not step out on her cutie patootie husband with her co-star and claims they just started dating, I do not think her story jives. So it is hard for me to root for someone who probably cheated, lied about it through revisionist history, and did it with her co-star (how boringly cliched, seriously). Plus I do not like her character on Smash. My love for her during the Grace years has dissipated significantly.

  41. Veronica

I prefer Messing’s dress, but I think Tatum has the better styling. She looks glowing.

  42. witjunkie

I’d never heard of Honeycrisps until I moved here to the Commonwealth of Flyover and saw a shark frenzy around the apple display (first of the season, and $1.59/lb.) I cynically bought some (Really? how good can they be?) and now I’m RUINT for apples for LIFE. They are perfect. At least where I live, while I don’t get In & Out, I do get honeycrisps for less than $2/lb.

  43. atz

Both look gorgeous. It was a tough call. I think Debra’s dress is something more wearable for more people so I voted for her in the end.
