As the year wraps up, let’s take a look at what Princess Charlene “Sadface” of Monaco has been wearing out and about lately — and by lately, I mean, since, like, September. The good news is, she looks somewhat less Sadfaced. The bad news is, girlfriend is married to neutrals, and that’s not a joke about Prince Albert. Let’s dive in — starting with the most recent event.

I think neutral colors are a middle class person’s idea of what the upper classes wear. The reality (at least in the American version): Lilly Pulitzer, Nantucket Reds (pink) and every flourescent color of Jack Rogers and grosgrain ribbons.
Girlfriend has Olympic swimmer shoulders and should never ever wear a one shouldered dress. The black formal number is perfect as is the gold evening gown and I would kill for that cape, even if it is BEIGE SO BEIGE
Agree 100%. Both on the shoulders and the black number, which I think is stunning. I’m not as wedded to the gold, but yes, it’s also beautiful.
Her swimmer’s shoulders make me happy. <3
I am seriously coveting her formal Snuggie. I love most all of these dresses (esp. the gowns!) though totally agree that it’s too much beige b.c it washes her out. Her legs, wow. I’d wear shorts every day of the year!
She is walking in the footsteps of one of the most elegant women of all time — Princess Grace. I don’t think she needs to go Nicki Minaj on us. If her taste is elegant, understated and — yes — neutral, she is crushing it. She’s an effing PRINCESS — she doesn’t need statement-wear.
Yeah, but there is A LOT of room between wall-to-wall beige and Nicki Minaj, you know? Try a gentle blue on occasion!
Perhaps she isn’t permitted to choose her own clothing…
I’m just glad she has attempted a wan smile here and there. Improves her whole look, especially when you think how terribly depressed she looked at the wedding.
she looks lovely in each of these photos. she also looks drugged to the eyeballs (to keep her obedient and prevent her from bolting again, I suppose.) and take a look at caroline and stephanie behind albert in the last picture (purple dress) — they look downright scary.
Exactly! Even when she is smiling, she has sad eyes to the Nth degree.
I don’t mind the beige, I really just wish she would get a new hair stylist. That formal ‘do with the black lace gown is God awful, I think my hair looked like that at my high school winter formal, in the freaking 90′s.
I agree. Her eyes are SO sad. Her fake smiles never reach her eyes.
NO COLOR, NO PEACE! Somebody pick me up off the floor … great line. Regarding the principessa, I like her looks and her neutrals … she gives His Princiness some much-needed class.
She has the loveliest ankles, so slim and graceful, and beautiful feet.
The neutral palette doesn’t bother me, but the scraped back hair isn’t doing her any favors.
Let’s call her Switzerland…. neutral, neutral.
“Greige” was the color of siding on our old house, just sayin’
She’s married to Doctor Bunsen Honeydew, who moonlights as a waiter in a high class restaurant.
Sorry, I had to. She’s elegant.
RIGHT?
And what kind of life is that? I’d like to see how she meep-meeps her way out of this one.
Hee hee… ahem. I think she’s signalling with the lack of colour. No colour = no happiness. I love a classy neutral, but no colour at all, ever? Not an accident. I bet if she decides to heir-up or make a bigger break for it, colour will return. No more meeping!
Too many of her outfits have weird, sharp angles and asymmetrical details. This is another thing that makes her look peculiar.
That little wary smile made you feel a bit better about their relationship? I still feel immensely sorry for her.
The poor hideous creature. Choosing to marry untold wealth.
I suspect she is nervous from being under the microscope and is playing it completely safe with clothing until she gets more comfortable in the role.
It was the only photo where they even looked like they were really in the same place and not just photoshopped in later . Oh Charlene, why did you do it? Other royals are available and you’re gorgeous!
I think what ACTUALLY made me feel better was that she was looking him in the eye for once.
the coat in the first picture is lovely, but I can’t get past the fact that it looks like she has Barbie feet. How do you get your shoes and hose to match THAT well?
She does look quite pained – she has that far-off look in her eyes. Do you think there’s a man from back home that she’s dreaming about? Some terribly cute but slightly impoverished guy that she used to spend the summers with? Who may or may not look like Ryan Gosling?
Duchess Catherine should give Princess Charlene royal style lessons. Heck, even Beatrice and Eugenie’s style, while often a miss, would be more exciting than this.
I want that coat.
Also, just because you have muscular shoulders doesn’t mean you have to hide them from the world. She probably worked damn hard for them.
Damn, I was hoping she’d be pregnant by now. I don’t know what their deal was, but give him his heir and get the hell out. End your servitude!
It’s interesting that the dress with color is the only poorly fitted dress of the lot. That pink dress makes her look like she has enormous hips and thighs, and we all know that that is not true.
It looks like she’s trying to be invisible. Poor woman. BUT THOSE PANTS MY GOD WHAT.
While there are things here that I covet (the little capelet coat!), I agree that the beige effect is so saturated — desaturated? — that it could almost be a code. It’s of a piece with her ability to smile without engaging her sad eyes.
August’s pink thing may have said, “I feel good today.” But fast forward to the coat in the first shot — princess girl is wearing beige even UNDER THAT. And on her feet too. That’s not even a Beige Cry For Help, anymore.
That look says, “Abandon all hope.”
Not that I blame her, since she’s married to the heir to the Pillsbury Doughboy Throne. The man thinks it’s okay to wear his blue PJ bottoms to a formal event? KACK.
Kudos to her, I guess. Were this my life, I’d be wearing brown paper grocery bags by now.
Those pants are traditional
Beige is so you won’t think to look up the old pics of her in Maldives where she was caught giving Albert underwater fellatio. Beige is boring, for nice boring girls. Right?
I think she looks fantastic. Being married to Albert, that’s another story. Back in my day, say, Diana’s wedding time, he was a babe and a great catch. Now, he looks like every middle-aged banker type. Too bad he didn’t marry a peer, I mean someone closer to his age. I too love the gray “snugglie” and the gold. With her coloring, I think the neutral works.
the beige doesn’t really bother me so much. but i love her shoulders. i used to have shoulders like that. i need to get them back.
I think if they both looked like they cared more about their outfits, they would be less interesting people.
She looks classy as all get out in these pictures. Wish I could rock the beige/greige as she does. I would just look washed out. She looks flawless.
Isn’t it weird how he wears all the color? Look at that crazy tie! He is the dress with the wacky bright pattern on it, and she is the neutral clutch that doesn’t clash. Personally, I disapprove.
I am surprised two people like the grey Snuggie on her. I think she looks like Rooney Mara there, in character. (And is it just me, or are Albert’s pants a little John Hamm, if you know what I’m saying?!)
I don’t know, I love the colours on her. She is elegant and beautifully attired and, like Duchess Kathy, severely restricted in what she wears because anytime she’s appearing in public she is actually working, in a strictly defined role.
One day, she’ll be out of that marriage. It will be accomplished somehow. But for now she’s biding her time, and she looks far more regal than just about any other royal in Europe.
Can I say how much I love Prince Albert’s tie in the first picture? Looney Tunes Christmas! Sadface, on the other hand, looks like she was silhouetted in Photoshop and had a sepia filter applied. Really, head-to-toe camel (very different from camel toe!) for a children’s event?
She may wear mostly royally boring beige, but she’s beautiful, elegant and a hanger with a head… Everything looks good on her! I especially love the 6th dress (the black one), the 8th & 9th!
I have to go against the grain here. I think the neutrals suit her. Girlfriend knows how to show restraint unlike most celebs. She wears the clothes, they don’t wear her. She is the anti Gwen Stefanie.
Her sad face has made enjoying this season of Gossip Girl a bit more difficult, it is hard to stomach Blair scheming her way into becoming the princess of Monaco when the real princess of Monaco is trying to find her passport and get the hell out of dodge
The more weight he looses the better she’ll look. He’s not a great accessory.
I just wish she looked happier. He does not impress me — he might if he had managed to keep his pants zipped. i wonder what he gives his kids for Christmas?
Not sure what ya’ll are referring to about her sad eyes. Either you are looking at different photos than I am or using a magnifying glass – her eyes don’t look sad. Plus in a sampling of nine photos, in only one is she actually looking at the camera and in three she is actually looking down. Include with those three one in which she has her head turned almost at a right angle to her body and you have almost half of the nine where you can’t even see her eyes.
I don’t think she looks sad. She doesn’t look radiant or ecstatic, but I think she looks placid.
