Fugs and Pieces, June 29 2012

fugs-and-pieces

So, next week is going to be weird for those of us in the US, since we’re going to be taking off Wednesday in honor of the 4th of July holiday. Can I just say that having the 4th fall on a Wednesday is THE WORST? Can’t we agree as a nation that on years when the 4th is a Wednesday, we celebrate Independence on the 5th? WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE LONG WEEKEND? And speaking of the weekend, on Sunday, GFY TURNS EIGHT. I can’t believe it. THANK YOU ALL so much for being so supportive of everything we do, for reading, for being an awesome community, for buying our books (the new one, MESSY, is out now; SPOILED is freshly in paperback!) and coming out to meet us and Tweeting us and just being the best readership ever. We love you all. Enjoy the following:

– KATIE HOLMES TOM CRUISE DIVORCE. (Scroll down for our retrospective on their relationship.) Interestingly, Lainey reports she’s the one who filed AND she’s gone back to her old, original publicist, AND no one can find him right now. (Lainey)

– Let’s look at these pictures of Ryan Lochte and Phelpsy in the pool. I love the Olympics. Also, I was thinking last night: Phelps has totally grown into his face. I always thought he was cute but he’s lost the awkwardness.  (Lainey Gossip)

– Speaking of the Olympics, this piece about the track and field trials is SO SO SO GOOD. (Grantland)

– Do YOU have super-human magical cone vision? Some women do. I decided I’m one of them (just because I want to be; there is no proof of this at all). (Discover)

– Lena Dunham’s piece about Nora Ephron in The New Yorker is really lovely. (The New Yorker)

– You NEED to see Nick Offerman reading tweets from young female celebrities. I think I have a crush on Nick Offerman. (Team Coco)

– Elle did the legwork for you and found an awesome boutique in every state in the nation. (Elle)

– You are going to love these Edwardian street styles. (The Retronaut)

Have you been watching The Lizzie Bennet Diairies? It’s a modern retelling of P&P, and it’s very charming. (YouTube)

– And I love this Tumblr: Football (soccer) Minus Balls. (Football Minus Balls)

– I extra love this flowchart, detailing what to read this summer instead of 50 Shades of Grey. (UpWorthy)

– This Amber Heard/Johnny Depp relationship sure is helping her get some press coverage. I’m not saying it’s not legit. But I am saying that her PR people must be pretty excited. (Celebitchy)

People in Poland made the world’s biggest lasagna — in honor of the Italian soccer team — but….it has carrots and peas on top and no cheese, which to me means it might not TECHNICALLY be lasagna? Still, good on ya, Poland. (Time)

– And KFC in the Philippines is making a chicken sandwich with melted cheese on the TOP of the BUN. ???? Fine. I’d try it. (The Consumerist)

– You will like these letters from famous writers to little kids. (Flavorwire)

I LOVE the Lizzie Bennet diaries! I discovered them several weeks ago and I’m hooked.

I am now totally addicted to the Lizzie Bennet diaries! Thanks for giving me yet one more thing to distract me from actual work! (I mean it!)

And thanks to you for being two of the funniest, most awesome ladies I know, you genuinely brighten my (week)day.

I worked with a woman who had “perfect color vision,” which isn’t the same thing as what’s described above, but still pretty interesting. People with perfect color vision can discern slight variations in colors, making them useful employees for paint companies or auto manufacturers. She said did something related, and said it was very stressful. It also fades as you age. You can take a color vision test here: http://www.xritephoto.com/ph_toolframe.aspx?action=coloriq
    I got a 25.

That was an awesome test! I got a 12, though I’m convinced I would have done better with a better monitor, because I’m obnoxious like that.

Wow, I got 0 (which really surprises me as I’ve had some eye trouble lately)! All those obsessive years of arranging my clothes by shades of colors was good for something I guess.

I’ve taken it 2 more times, because I have no handle on my life priorities, and I got a 12 and then a 16. I will never get a 0 because, obviously, I don’t have perfect color vision….but I guess I concentrated more the last couple of times. You definitely need a good monitor!

Thanks for posting the link, marcia! I’ve seen this test before but was very happy to see it again. Very challenging. :-) I got a 3, said “What?!” to my monitor, and then realized that a lower score is better. I’m a graphic designer, so it’s a good thing I got a low score!

I did the same thing. I got a 4 and was all confused until I realized low was good. I’m an artist so it was good to know I’m not on a terrible career path, lol.

That was fun! Great link, marcia!

I scored an 11. I was kind of surprised at first because I’m not good at picking out colors for decorating purposes and thought I’d bomb it, but I am a visual person. My sense of hearing or smell… not so good.

And I have a good monitor.

Thank you for the “what to read instead of 50..” that was a brilliant chart.

Absolutely! I needed some new to me classic fiction ideas. And the Edwardian fashion photos are fabulous – I was born in the wrong era.

You know, I never thought Johnny Depp would be the kinda guy to shack up with someone young enough to be his daughter. I thought there was more to him than that. Oh Johnny…

Yeah, yuck. Granted that Ms. Heard IS 27 years old, and therefore well past the age of consent, but still. I’ve got shoes older than her! And Mr. Depp is older than me.

Except that she’s a lesbian. And not a secret one.

I was under the impression that she was bisexual.

Can’t lesbians have the male equiv of a beard? Still smells like self promotion to me.

Unrelated, but interesting; Adele is expecting: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18648924

I, too, LOVE the Olympics. I live in Eugene and went to the trials last Friday. Doesn’t get much better than an entire stadium, on their feet, screaming encouragement to Ashton Eaton as he smoked EVERYONE in the 400 meters. We’re all deeply in love with him.

And yes, I got to see all of the past gold medal decathletes. Bruce Jenner is impressively orange.

That flow chart is a big misleading, I think. People who pick up Slaughterhouse 5 looking for a good time travel story are going to get a little more than they bargained for. :D And unleashing Kafka on the suspecting under the guise of “fantasy” is just cruel.

That collection of letters is wonderful. <3 C.S. Lewis' in particular is lovely.

Thanks for the link to the Lizzie Bennet diaries. I watched all the eps to date in one sitting. Loved it!

The Retronaut link was fascinating – despite the ridiculous dresses and corseted waists, most of the women appeared to be striding out with gusto, even reading as they went. Pretty sure one of them was on the phone to her agent. Great stuff.
