Globes 2010: Best and Worst

We’ve had a jammed, finger-cramping week of covering the red-carpet hits and misses from the Golden Globes, and this year, we’d like to take the aforementioned week to a friendly conclusion and take a poll to determine which celebrity you guys would pick as your ultimate best-dressed star from the event.

Naturally, our methodology is imperfect and highly unscientific. Since we can’t just list names of every single person who attended — too long, and also, we’ll totally end up forgetting someone — we’ve instead rounded up all the people we featured on the site in this handy-dandy slideshow, and you can vote on your absolute favorite and absolute least-favorite. Let’s see what kind of a consensus Fug Nation can reach. To keep the polls shorter, we put all the people we fugged and/or whose polls are trending “fug” in the Worst Dressed contest, and all the people we WP’d/whose polls are leaning “Fab” in the Best Dressed category. Caveats: Maggie Gyllenhaal is going up under both, because I meant to put hers to a vote in the first place and I forgot; Amanda Palmer goes on both because we loved the dress and just lamented the lack of slip and sudden striptease; and Diane Kruger goes under both because the winner of that one is “Love Pacey, and thus, love it all,” which is a grudging victory at best.
** Oops. As someone astutely pointed out, we mixed up where Joy Bryant and Camilla Belle are supposed to go, and we can’t change it because if we do it invalidates the poll, so… sorry, Fug Nation! Hopefully this is a first-time glitch, committed after a really tiring week that has me in disbelief that it’s only Thursday…

Sound fun? I hope so, because we’re giving it a try anyway. Feel free to discuss your choices in the comments, also. The usual rules apply.
The polls will be after the jump, because they are LONG, and this post will eat up the entire home page if we don’t do it this way.

I think you guys have Camilla Belle and Joy Bryant switched in terms of categories….

  2. GFY Heather

SIGH. You are totally right. Sorry, guys! I don’t think either of them would’ve won anyway, but… I think this week has fried us.

  3. buttercup

No Olivia Wilde under Best Dressed? She was my fave.

  4. The Countess of Nassau County

Where the HELL is Halle Berry? The woman looked AMAZING.

  5. Oblaadee

Jennifer Garner for the win, she may be a little thinner but yowza that dress fit her like a glove and she still looked happy without scruff face Ben.

Sev loser. Like her acting. Dislike her style.

Where is Marion Cotillard and Olivia Wilde? J’dore.

  6. Stasie Smith

I agree. Olivia Wilde looked awesome. I forgot who she is – but the girl with the “paper towel” dress and the pouffy tennisball hair. She looked awful

  7. boo

No Helen Mirren? I voted for Christina A before I remembered how great Jennifer Garner looked, dammit.

  8. Kristen

I vote Tina Fey because it was so OBVIOUSLY not a good look – the top was amazing, the bottom… well, I wish I could watch her making fun of herself at some point on Leno/Conan (if he ever comes back to TV…) because she KNOWS how awful the bottom of that dress was. Seriously.

  9. Lynn

Fergie? Loved the dress… on somebody else.

  10. Rozzy Middleton

Kate Hudson needs to stop wearing bloody wedding dresses!

  11. WhoopsieDaisy

Marion Cotillard, she looked like a dream in green. I didn’t mind the lace…True French style. Please put her up ladies…

  12. GFYfan

Surprised Ginnifer Goodwin has been left out of “Best Dressed!” Her blue’s on-trend but also suits her perfectly. And her length (like Julia Roberts’) is perfect for a “Rainy Day Challenge!”

  13. lamoll

Chloe S. for the loss: lovely is as lovely does.

  14. Dan

My finger is totally on the pulse of Fug Nation! Hoorah!!

Also, wasn’t Alicja Bachleda a “fug”?

    Gooooooo, Team Hendricks!

  15. holly

Aw, now, it would have been nice to have *all* candidates in *both* categories. Not that I don’t think that you Fug Girls aren’t usually right (insert salaam here), but I would’ve liked the chance to vote for Carey Mulligan for best-dressed. I thought the dress was lovely, despite how it dragged the bosoms downward.

I probably still would have gone with J. Garner, though. I wanted to vote for Christina Hendricks, but I would’ve been voting for that bod, not necessarily the peach confection hugging it.

  16. Mrs O

    Yay: Christina Hendricks looked amazing!
Boo:Amanda Palmer had serious hairy pits. That did it for me.

  17. Stephie D. Katz Extraordinaire

I love you, Kelly Kapoor! And I’m sure Ryan would have smacked himself for playing with your heart if he could see you in that yellow dress!

So flattering on her, even if it didn’t strike me as amazing initially. I think my love for her brought it from “oh, nice dress” to “damn, Ryan, you got a hot girlfriend…ooh, I would never have treated her so bad when I was out of prison” (sorry, I’m an Office nerd).

  18. Suan

No Juliana Margulies for best dress? I thought she was lovely and so nice to see a dress with red that isn’t RED.

Worst dressed: too many choices! Went with Tina Fey.

  19. Janellionaire

Yay Christina Hendricks! Yay Christian Siriano! Yay!

  20. Cat

Dammit, Helen Mirren was the best looking one there.

  21. Anonymous

Amanda Palmer had hairy legs too but that’s not what makes her fug…its the tacky undressing on the red carpet. Didn’t even have enough panache to be called a strip tease. And yes the dress is amazing, but its not a best dress competition, its best dressed, and she, my friends, was NOT.

  22. Elizabeth

  23. Catherine

Personally, I thought Kate Winslet was the best dressed of all of them, but Christina Hendricks also looked damn good (and Helen Mirren always looks flawless).

  24. GFY Jessica

We used put to a vote people we managed to feature on the site — wish we could have covered them all, but we only have twenty fingers…

  25. Cat

I am also writing in a vote for Olivia Wilde as best-dressed.

  26. granny

I can forgive much, but I can’t forgive Amanda Palmer the ugly gaping holes in her stockings.

  27. melina

I voted for Zoe Saldana but I also loved Maggie Gyllenhaal.
The worst has got to be Patricia Arquette.

  28. Jules

Gotta vote for Ms Palmer for Worst, considering she wasn’t exactly dressed for a portion of the evening. Wearing a giant ‘I NEED ATTENTION!!!!!!’ sign like that is always tacky.

  29. Rachel

Jen Garner looked *fabulous*!!!! Winner, hands down, or I eat my hat.

  30. Anonymous

i read somewhere that the Palmer pictures were taken *after* the post-party, to which she wore a different dress, and the photogs wanted shots of her in the first dress, hence the change (and photos of it).

  31. Erin

I voted Diane Kruger for best dressed (the chick knows how to accessorize!) but I would have voted for Olivia Wilde had she been listed.

  32. kate13

The Sev for worst. Ms. McCord’s dress was vulgar but what was she doing there in the first place? And C-Sev was nasty, petty and small.

I cannot vote for anyone for Best until Olivia Wilde appears on the list. She was perfection.

  33. Andrew

Something to keep in mind with Ms Palmer — that striptease was NOT on the red carpet on the way in. It happened on the way out: she and Mr Gaiman were leaving and the photographers outside (it was just the photogs and them, no crowds or other partygoers) asked for a chance to photograph her in the dress she’d been wearing earlier. Gaiman blogged about turning himself into the human “modesty” screen the following day.

He also said she looked a lot more naked in the pictures than she did at the party, but yeah, that doesn’t excuse the lack of a pre-event flash test.

    Sigourney Weaver and Drunkface FTW!

  34. star

Anna Paquin was gorgeous, wrong column i say!

  35. wakeupmaggie

Alicja Bachleda as a best dressed option? huh. I think I may have misunderstood the commentary regarding her golden globes. I’m going to have to go through these one by one but I think I’ll probably stick with Kate Hudson. That was some dress.

  36. JDinFL

Toni Collette looked AMAZING! Her dress was gorgeous and she did women over 40 proud!

Tina Fey was obviously in the mood to make light of the whole dress-up angle; why else would she wear something so silly??

  37. maia

i voted for Maggie because I’m pretty sure someone decoupaged that dress onto her body and because Penelope Cruz who looked esmokin’ was left off the list. so.
if patricia and her black bow tie don’t win worst dressed, i’m going to wear both their outfits to my cousin’s wedding.

  38. Kasey

I’m going to have to include myself in the shocked bunch that didn’t see Olivia Wilde in the best dressed poll. I thought she looked great and her pleasant demeanor that evening was lovely. Otherwise I was torn between Emily Blunt (bcuz girlfriend was robbed of a Globe) and Christina Hendricks. Patricia Arquette was a mess, so there’s that.

  39. Beverly

I thought Toni Collette looked amazing. Sorry not to see her listed.

  40. Kathy

I, too, am sad that Julianna Marguiles wasn’t on your best-dressed list. She looked amazing! So, I voted for Jennifer Garner because, besides being a really pretty dress, it had the best fit of the night.

The loser: Chloe Sev, of course. Hideous dress, nasty facial expressions, crummy attitude. That’s Fug with a capital F…no, actually, FUG in ALL CAPS!!!

Lastly, I was a trifle bummed that you girls put LiLo on the worst-dressed list. I know you didn’t like the hood (I thought it was actually cute and kicky) but the dress itself was adorable and chic and all her parts were nicely covered. She deserves some props for that AND if I was young and fit and trim, I would have worn that dress in a heartbeat (maybe with the hood down most of the time, but still!)

  41. Anonymous

Christina Hendricks was the only one that I actually really loved. My sister and I gasped and had to stop and stare at her and the dress when we flipped through it on a slideshow of looks. It was fantastic, and she was easily the best dressed and the most well put together woman there.

  42. Kathy

You know, I liked the dress Christina Henricks wore okay, but I didn’t like the way it fit her. I am a busty, curvy girl like her, and I would have made sure my ladies were reined it a bit better. I thought she was gonna lose one in a few photos, and that is NOT good on the red carpet!

  43. Kathy

    Typos, sorry: Hendricks, reined IN

  44. Amy

Anna Paquin definitely should have been in the best dressed column… no amount of cloven hooves could make that dress fug!

  45. wakeupmaggie

Dang. I was thinking Kate Hudson was on the other list…ummmm. For Worst, I think it’s hard to top Bryce Dallas Howard’s dress. For Best? This was tougher than I thought it would be, but my goodness! Christina Hendricks totally blows everyone else away.

William Macy did give BDH a run for my Worst vote. I’m hoping he’s ill-kempt for some kind of upcoming role somewhere.

  46. Emma

I wish you could just vote Anna Paquin’s shoes for worst accessory EVER but loved the dress

  47. Robin

The Sev looked awful. Kind of like a giant rectangle, but with ruffles. Sigourney Weaver looked awesome, and therefore got my vote, but Olivia Wilde was totally left out!

  48. jenny

I voted for Zoe Saldana as best dressed b/c Olivia Wilde was missing.

  49. Anne

My favs were Emily Blunt, Felicity Huffman and Lea Michele

  50. Jenny

Oh, and BTW…Halle Berry wasn’t on the best dressed list either. She could have worn a feed sack and still rocked it.

  51. MissAnthropy

Shouldn’t that trainwreck Amanda Palmer be in her own special category of horrible public nudity?

  52. Melanie

So many of the dresses were boring this year.

I’m voting Best Dressed for Amanda Palmer simply because her dress was AMAZING and at least livening up the red carpet. Agree that the strip was a bit much, but the dress was daring and fab, but we are voting on fashion not conduct.

Worst = January Jones. I normally love her, but what was the deal with the black headband? And that dress was too much black for her fair skin.

  53. thereset

Christina Hendricks ROCKED THAT dress. word.

  54. Sarah M Bruce

I would have voted Olivia Wilde as best, and I thought Anna Paquin should have been under Best (you usually didn’t see her shoes)

  55. Anonymous

loved Anna Paquin, totally wrong column in my opinion
J Garner looked awesome as well!

  56. Bee

Agree w a couple of posters about Sookie’s dress and FOUL shoes. Also think Helen Mirren shoulda been a contenda for best… I know it was simple but I *loved*

  57. Mel

Diane Kruger was by far my favorite of the evening. She just looked amazing.
And for worst, I picked Drunkface McCord, partially because that dress was totally ugly and weird and partially because she annoys the crap out of me. Sorry, I wish I was impartial, but I just can’t be.

  58. Katie

I actually liked Tina Fey’s dress, unlike everyone else on the Internet. I thought it was cool and perky. It was hard to pick one for best dressed, but tops for the night were Olivia Wilde, Christina Hendricks, Christina Aguilera, Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Garner and Lea Michele.

  59. Marybelle

Why isn’t Rose Byrne on the best dressed list? I thought she was the most amazing by far. Stunning!

  60. Jaye

I voted Christina Aguilera before I remembered how freaking AMAZING Sigourney Weaver looked. Fortunately, it appears that plenty of people did NOT make my mistake.

  61. Anonymous

Voted Fab for Amanda Palmer mostly as a fan, because if anyone knows her work, solo or in the Dresden Dolls, nudity is no big deal for her. She exposes herself nearly naked on Twitter often, and is completely comfortable with her body. Maybe the Golden Globes was not her scene, but if you as an artist to remover herself at anytime, it’s asking too much. AFP for the win!!!

  62. Wes

I love that Sigourney Weaver is making a showing in this. She’s fantastic in all ways.

  63. Anonymous

Of those that we were asked to choose from:

    My 5 Best Dressed

    1. Jennifer Garner
    2. Christina Aguilera
    3. Anna Kendrick
    4. Emily Blunt
    5. Drew Barrymore

    My 5 Worst Dressed

    1. Amanda Palmer
    2. Bryce Dallas Howard
    3. Shannyn Sossamon
    4. Morena Baccarin
    5. Ashley Olsen

Though, I must add, Halle Berry would have gotten my vote as best dressed if she were listed. That dressed was sexy and gorgeous, her make-up and hair flawless, and the bracelet and earrings went so well with the look.

  64. Karen

Where is Mo’nique on these lists?? The speech was wonderful, but the dress was BAD. The back with the sweeping tiers made her look huge, and she is not huge, by a damn sight. Can you add an new category called “Get my stylist on the phone…I am SO firing them!!” :)

  65. TonyG

Of those that we were asked to choose from:

    My 5 Best Dressed

    1. Jennifer Garner
    2. Christina Aguilera

    My 5 Worst Dressed

    5. Ashley Olsen

  66. Hannah

Tina Fey’s crazy dress is still my un-ironic favorite. I have no idea why.

  67. Melanie

BTW – Anna Paquin’s dress was pretty amazing too. She didn’t make it to the nominations list, though.

  68. Ruby

WTF, Julianna Margulis was the best-dressed person present, in her beautiful shiny-red-and-black dres and she isn’t even on the poll?

What is the problem here – technical error that ate the option, or sudden attack of blindness?

  69. hlp

My top three (and currently the top three in the poll): Sigourney Weaver, Christina Hendricks, Jennifer Garner.

I thought voting for a worst-dressed was much harder. My bottom three: Amanda Seyfried, Bryce Dallas Howard, and (hate to say it) Jennifer Morrison (girl is pretty, but dress looks like a sponge).

  70. nothing

Amanda Palmer looked great! Too bad the dress was in the way…

  71. Magnolia Bee

Why don’t we let the attention-seeking famewhore Amanda Palmer crawl back into richly-deserved oblivion?

  72. Bec

Amanda Palmer – and her hairy pits – wad GORGEOUS.

Don’t take her strip out of context, read the above comments of explanation. Also the dress was less transparent without camera flash. Regardless, she is damn sexy no matter what she does or doesn’t wear. She’s also about ten million times more intelligent than half the barbies there.

  73. snmt

i love that everyone thinks Amanda Palmer arrived at the Golden Globes and instantly stripped. it was when she was leaving, the photogs asked her to change back into her first dress because they didn’t get pictures. so she did, because she’s like that.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-stranahan/amanda-palmer-naked-dead_b_429343.html

i love that everyone thinks Amanda Palmer arrived at the Golden Globes and instantly stripped. it was when she was leaving, the photogs asked her to change back into her first dress because they didn’t get pictures. so she did, because she’s like that.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-stranahan/amanda-palmer-naked-dead_b_429343.html

  75. Kelly

I thought Anna Paquin’s dress was fabulous, strangely daring amid all the frumpy pastels, and generally ticked all the right boxes.
Thumbs up too for Christina Hendrick’s amazing titty circus. I loathe flounce in all it’s forms but she rocked it and that’s undeniable.

It’s so difficult to differentiate the distaste you feel for certain celebrities
from the relative merit of their wardrobe but here goes- I love Cameron Diaz in that red dress. For once, she looked clean, classy, her own actual age… hell, she looked dignified! Come on, you don’t see that every day.

Halle Berry WAS looking great but the girl is a victim of her own gifts. Unless she showed up to something with holographic sparks flying off her arse I just sort of shrug and think ‘yeah, but that’s Hall Berry, she always looks like that.’ So it was sort of meh for me re her. I think the same old 1996 hair was a bit of a retreat too. There are other dos out there.

  76. Esther

Woot! Amanda Palmer for fuggest AND fabbest! Take that opposing dichotomies!

Note: Palmer can play a mean piano & write catchy little (psychotic) diddies, therefore she is disqualified for the title “famewhore” because she has talent and discernible use in this world. Neil Gaiman is a pretty great writer too.

  77. kate mckinnon

I went with Sevigny for worst dressed, even though I was somewhat discouraged by Amanda Palmer as well. I must point out, though, that Neil G. did explain that the bad call of stripping down on the red carpet was done as they were leaving for the night, when the photographers complained that they didn’t get a good shot of her in the first dress. So she simply whipped off the party dress, and put the award ceremony dress back on.

Her real crime was that she really could have knocked them dead, instead of trying to be shocking, which by definition (Hollywood!) she wasn’t.

The whole hairy leg/hairy pit thing… I think that we all know that we should support the way a woman looks naturally, but beautiful gowns weren’t designed for hairy legs any more than tuxedos and French whites were designed for wild and out of control beards. Men shave, as a function of grooming, it’s not like women are the only ones oppressed by this little ritual.

  78. megan

so, just viewed results of the poll, and find it hilar that amanda palmer is currently winning in both categories!

  79. Kelly

I would like to add that Amanda Palmer really pissed me off with her stupid begging-for-attention drunk-arsed striptease. Yes I am familiar with her work and general thing, the latter being that she gets her shit off as fast as you can look at her because that’s what liberated artistes do. Rolls eyes. Where do I go to start a “PLEASE WEAR PANTS” week?
    That is all.

  80. Nora

I love the idea of this poll, can we have it for other awards shows and big events, please? :)

    My picks were:

For best dress Jayma Mays – because she really did have a beautiful, interesting and creative option to the standard black dress. It was both age appropriate and appropriate to the event.

For worst dress Julianne Moore – for probably the worst black dress known to humanity! And more negative points for that red disaster and make-up by Crusty the Clown. (So sad, because she really is awesome – she deserves better clothes!!)

  81. Hannah

I would like to join the other people who have pointed out that Amanda Palmer’s “strip-tease” occured AFTER the fact, when the photographers asked her to change back into the other dress.
And she didn’t go slip-less because she is a “fame whore”; she had tried on several slips andn one of them did justice to the dress, so she thought it would be fun to go without.

  82. Toile

Loved, loved Drew Barrymore’s dress – so daring yet subtle and perfect. She looked like a star. Reminded me of Anna Wintour’s amazing dress with the horned curlicues at the Met a couple years ago.

  83. Tara

    Why the Marion Cotillard snub???

  84. maiaG

Also loved the Barrymore dress – she looked like a fertility goddess. Love her.
I liked the concept of Zoe Saldana’s dress if not the actual execution.

  85. Crashgrab

F the boring bourgeoisie. Amanda Palmer is amazing!

  86. maiaG

@Tara Marion Cotillard is stunning – remember the incredible “scale dress” from last year’s Oscars? She looked like a goddess! Her Globes dress wasn’t spectacular though – the lacy peek-a-boo slip ruined the line

  87. Brianna

Also loved Penelope Cruz’s elegance in black lace and gauze. I didn’t understand Kate Hudson’s meringue.

  88. Hannah

I think you will find that, like Felicia Day, Amanda Palmer is ” one of those people that The Interwebs love, and will defend to the death” So maybe a poor choice putting her in the polls, considering you’re the only site that really mentioned her fashion at the Globes.

  89. Brianna

@Toile Wintour wore Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel at the Met Superhero gala in 2008. It was amazing!

  90. JenniferC

George Clooney’s girlfriend also looked amazing – a Nicolas Ghesquiere-type dress – soft, feminine and lovely. Anyone know who actually designed it?

  91. Garland

Jen Garner looked too thin and over-exercised – not a good look for her. She’s so pretty – needs something to soften the edges.

  92. cat

i love that we think Amanda Palmer is both best dressed and worst dressed (I don’t count P.Arq. and TJ since there’s 2 of them splitting the %16).

  93. Smofbabe

Unfortunately, neither of my own personal picks were there for Best Dressed: Toni Collette and Eva La Rue. (And George Lucas’s ex-wife Marcia Griffin, who was wearing an absolutely fabulous multicolored beaded number.) My own lengthy fashion review is up at http://smofbabe.livejournal.com/651938.html

I am addicted to your site and love you both to pieces but I remain totally, utterly, and completely shocked that Zoe Saldana got a Well Played from you. I thought she looked like a chorus girl in a bad road production of West Side Story.

  94. Brianna

@Garland Which designer was Jennifer Garner wearing do you know?

  95. Anonymous

If I had a body like Amanda Palmer, I would SO do that.

But I guess I would need her fearlessness too ;)

  96. savannah

In complete agreement with Esther :) Whilst stripping on the red carpet probably wasn’t the best idea, Amanda Palmer is actually really talented. Give the Dresden Dolls a listen. No, seriously.

  97. Stella

You got Amanda Palmer’s name wrong. Her middle name is “Fucking,” although if that’s not appropriate for this site you could at least put an F.

  98. Diana

I don’t care how great an artist Amanda Palmer is or how comfortable she is w her body/nudity…stripping on the red carpet on the way in or out is trashy, so are holes in stockings, so are hairy pits (did someone write they thought her pits were sexy? are you kidding me? Why?), so are her drawn on eyebrows, so was her crappy hairdo…I had never seen that woman before but the whole combo had the effect of intense repulsion on me and now I don’t even know if I can ever get over it and listen to her stuff. Anyways, the gorgeous dress does not make up for all that. FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  99. MissT

Amanda Palmer for the win!!! Both :P

  100. Kimberley

You have both Amanda AND Neil Gaiman twittering about this poll, (Neil said he voted best AND worst for Amanda because “either would make her grin”) so it’s no wonder she’s so fully in the lead for both.

Like another commenter said, she is BELOVED by the interwebs, and her followers (I now include myself in the group) will defend her to the end. In whatever context is needed.

(I also loved Saffron’s (Christina Hendricks will always be Saffron to me, Mad Men notwithstanding) breasts.)

  101. Lucy

Amanda Fucking Palmer for the Motherfucking win.

  102. BDinfluence

Amanda Palmer needs her own category. Best undressed FTW!!

  103. Shana

Amanda Palmer for both. Agreeing on the Best Undressed for her. Total win. I love that woman.

  104. Cyn

Amanda Palmer ftw in BOTH categories!!

    BEST UNDRESSED – Amanda Palmer

    Heheh.

  105. Melissa

I am SO sick of Amanda Palmer. I wish Neil Gaiman would get back to writing about topics OTHER than her. She’s not shocking or provocative, she’s boring and attempts to cover it with cultivated eccentricities.

  106. emily

No Anna Paquin! She look stunning!

  107. Trisha

Amanda Palmer is amazing no matter what you have been conditioned to believe, she is herself each and everyday. Which is something most people are not brave enough to be.

    #LOFNOC, and CAPS LOCK LOVE

AFP you have made me a better woman

  108. Mitzi

I don’t see the big deal with Amanda Palmer “stripping” on the red carpet. This site is a TREASURE TROVE of people who flounce around half naked in worse “outfits” that leave nothing to the imagination and that not even a slip could save. At least she wore a gorgeous dress at the end of it and did not forget the nipple covers unlike SOME people, with plenty examples on this site.

  109. jayme

can’t believe anna paquin is in the worst dressed category! loveddd her dress and her cute gap-teeth. but emily blunt i think looked absolutely INCREDIBLE, and she has the adorable man-bag, my only fault with her is how reluctant she is to hide the man-bag away! pacey witter definitely would’ve won, but alas, he was not a category.
jennifer garner for second, but emily looked lovelyyyy.

and though im desperate to award william h macy with award for ‘most pathetic and creepy emulation of your wife’, i am so disgusted with the entire january jones affair that she gets my vote.

  110. Miel

Love Gaiman but… I hate that the Gaiman/Palmer fanatics are totally screwing/skewing this poll.

  111. cee

Anna Paquin was my favourite (except for the shoes, let’s ignore the shoes). Sparkles!

  112. cherray

What is sad about this poll is that AFP haters are taking it really seriously while her fans are doing this for fun.
If you can’t understand a person it doesn’t mean the person is fug or trashy. Want fug and trashy? Take a look at the MTV Music Awards, or Teen Choice Awards, there you’ll find plenty of people like that. Oh, but I forgot, they all shave their legs and armpits so I guess that makes up for it, righ? No.

Someone who called her an attention whore and who said things about that woman, do you actually believe she cares about things people who hide behind a screen tell her? She has a huge fanbase and she’s a great woman, maybe it’s just me but it is quite stupid stating things without knowing what you’re talking about.

Besides, who said ‘best dressed’ is looking like a porcelain doll and not wearing something that actually shows your personality?

  113. Dae

I know it’s not on the list but Dianna Agron’s dress was one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever witnessed on the red carpet.

She wins hands down for me.

  114. Kann

Delighted! I am so happy I got to vote for Drunkface McCord. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to cast my vote because I don’t actually know her name. Thankfully you knew that I wouldn’t know her by any other name.

  115. Nickoli

Can I just say how I Love that Amanda was there as Niel’s Guest, yet she took the fucking stage. <3 Beauty is Courage. Beauty is Intelligence. Beauty is Humor. How does she Not have that?

  116. mcmatz

All those who are shocked, SHOCKED at Amanda Palmer’s dress should take a look back at their red carpet photos from the past. One year Jennifer Lopez wore a dress with a top so sheer that the camera had to keep head and shoulders shots only and Gwyneth Paltrow has trod out the ta-tas in many a transparent dress even at the White House when she was younger.
So is it her dress, the fact that she isn’t a Hollywood fashionista, the European grooming or just the fact that she was having fun with it?
    The woman has heart.

  117. Gees

Could someone please stuff Kate Bosworth maybe a burger in her mouth! No matter where she goes or what she has on, she just looks starving. And that is not pretty…

  118. Kyra

FYI, Rhona Mitra links to Anna Paquin’s Fug Carpet page.

  119. Honesty

Amanda Palmer wins both best and worst dressed. She’s a winner in my eyes.

I love how people are critizing her “attention seeking”. She’s a rockstar. Also, the whole point of the Globes is to attention seek. Otherwise, there would be no actors. And George Clooney and fellow actors wouldn’t use them as a forum to voice their tired opinions.

    Keep it rocking Amanda!

  120. helmingstay

What is *fun* about this poll is that AFP haters are taking it really seriously while her fans are doing this for fun.

“I hate that the Gaiman/Palmer fanatics are totally screwing/skewing this poll.”

You can always just mentally remove all votes for AFP and eyeball the remainders yourself, or ask admins to do the same. Really, is it that much of a tragedy?

Ever heard of slashdot.org? Stories posted there are legendary for causing websites to fail waaaaaay back in the day as thousands of geeks simultaneously visited the site mentioned in the story. Twitter gives us more of the same – Gaiman accidentally takes a cite down by mentioning it and many fans visit it at once.

The internet is public. Get over it and enjoy yourselves!

  121. NYCGirl

I’d never heard of Amanda Palmer before this, but judging by some of the comments and the voting, she evidently has a very devoted fan base. But for me, undie-exposing dresses are a no-no, so I voted for her for worst-dressed.

Out of the options given for best-dressed, I chose Christina Hendricks, though I’m with Marybelle at 6:56 on liking Rose Byrne’s dress the best.

  122. LolaSvelt

You fug girls may be witty, but you know absolutely nothing about fashion. All the boring outfits are in the best dressed section and all the fun and risky are in the worst.

  123. Alex

And… on more Amanda Palmer for both categories…
As well as for the “best undressed” category.

    AFPG FTW !

  124. mickeyitaliano

yeah…everyone forgot about Halle…when she walked out to present,we were all like,”Insane”

  125. ithildin

Bow down to the power of gaiman/palmer fans. XD

neil gaiman has a bajillion followers, despite only being described as ‘friend’.

besides, she’s got my vote for worst dressed. that was awesome bad. in a good/bad way.

    bwah now i m confused.

  126. ithildin

  127. Ingrid

Christina Hendricks! Extremely flattering dress, and her hair is actually good this time.

    Plus boobies and hips.

  128. Charlotte

Sigourney Weaver looked amazing, Emily Blunt looked amazing, and – Chloe Sevigny looked AMAZING! Honestly – she should be in best dressed. Why do people not get credit for personality anymore?

  129. Molly

Another write in for Olivia Wilde. How did you not include her? Her dress was amazing.

  130. Elin

Could Palmer please call off her flunkies and let us have our silly poll in peace? No?

    Sigourney Weaver FTW
Bryce Dallas Howard FTF (for the fug)

  131. KimV

A vote for Amanda Palmer as I don’t think she was given a fair go and, more importantly, there was no Helen Mirren on the list! You only have yourselves to blame. Though once I saw the results, I realised Ms Palmer didn’t need my help, so maybe I should’ve gone with Sigourney Weaver instead. But really, that vintage dress was great. Maybe it was because of the Haiti but there was a lot of bland out there and that dress definitely wasn’t.

  132. Sue

One of the reasons that Amanda Palmer’s nudity offends so many people, she isn’t silicone. Its ok for a superstar to show up on the red carpet and show some skin, some nipple, whatever…just as long as the flesh they show is more plastic than real.
Who wants to see what an actual real person looks like when Hollywood is supposed to be the world of fantasy?
I actually read where someone called her fat. REALLY?
That’s why I give her props. Even if it was just for attention, reminding people what a real woman looks like in the midst of ‘perfection’. YAY!!!

  133. linidalu

Where was Rose Byrne? She wore the most amazing colour and accessorised simply and effectively – and she may even have cracked a smile at one point!

  134. Miss_Miffy

Now if either Olivia Wilde or The Sev were in the best dressed category (what’s up with that?) I’d be torn. Jennifer Garner it is then!

  135. Jenn

there needs to be a “Best Under-Dressed” category.

oh yes. i WOULD most certainly vote for Ms. Palmer.

and for those offended: were you offended when Rose McGowan wore that see-through string thingy? or when Gena Davis was nipping out of her sheer gauzy floor length dress? what about the infamous J-Lo dress? i bet the answer to all of those were NO. so why so offended over Amanda Palmer’s dress? because she’s unconventional? because she doesn’t care about having a waif figure? because you’re grossed out by armpit hair? or maybe because she’s just not high profile enough yet and she took someone else’s limelight for a little too long? just a few things to chew on.

in my opinion, the dress would have been the best one out there, sheer or not. the vintage cut and the antiqued colour were stunning, especially when coupled with her way-back-in-the-day personal style.

  136. caitlin

Wow, a lot of angry feminist energy up in here.

Also, not that I think she was best dressed by any stretch of the imagination, but I really thought Fergie looked a vision in her lavender gown. Her hair and makeup was divine and wasn’t given enough credit.

    OH well. Haters gon’ hate!

  137. melistress

I LOVE that Amanda Palmer is currently leading in both categories. It is almost SWINTON.

Jennifer Morrison, however, hands down had the worst dress with Patricia Arquette coming close to tying her.

  138. Tina

I just can’t believe Quentin Tarantino isn’t on the worst dressed list. That thing was hideous.

  139. NeidFyre

Wow, all the haters out there just being vicious.

Amanda Fucking Palmer for the Win in both categories. Why? Why the fuck not?

    She IS a rock star.
There have been far more barely dressed folks out there in years past.
    She IS fun.
She is NOT taking herself too seriously.

    Rock on, AFP!

  140. peter

no, my favourite star is not under the best dress list, either

  141. s

where the heck is Julianna Marguelies under best dressed?
my second favorite look was anna paquin
    everyone else . . . . boring.

  142. Molly

I totally don’t get all the Amanda Palmer love.

  143. Hannah

First of all: Europeans DO shave *shock*! I’m from Europe, I can know.

Okay, so Amanda Palmer was having fun with it, I could (almost) bear the nudity, but I’m sorry guys… If you’re going to an event like this, you could’ve at least shaved. This has nothing to do with being “a real woman” or “having fun with it”, this is just a question of personal hygiene IMO.

Lea Michele FTW! For someone that hasn’t done that many red carpets before, she looked stunning! As did Anna Kendrick!

  144. noranc

I second Toni Collette. She pulled off those gold sequins that could have overwhelmed someone else.

  145. chrysalis

The only people more annoying than fucking Amanda Palmer are her fucking fans (who usually don’t know anything about music).

  146. claire nisbet

anna paquin should have been on the best dressed! amazing dress and great couple x

  147. Anonymous

Where was Ginnifer Goodwin? She was my fave. Emily Blunt was second best.

It was a hard to pick a worst. There were so many terribly dressed and styled people.

  148. Leah

I mean, you GOTS to give it to the Sev, that is just one GOD awful dress, and the thing is, she’s this interesting looking woman with a great body, why must she hide herself in a set of drapes from 1975? Disco is dead, Clo.

As for best dress, I can’t give anything to anyone from Twilight, and you are right, that woman’s face is oddly tiny like an elf or something and that concerns me. So it’s all about Christina Hendricks, because that woman OWNS her body. “I’m so glad I got to roam those hillsides”, only time I’ve ever been jealous of Roger Sterling.

  149. Jim

    Toni Collette. Best.

  150. Lea

So it’s called “European grooming”, huh? No wonder my American friends are surprised to find out that I shave regularly.

So, yeah, majority of us in the Old Continent do shave. Nevertheless, yay for Amanda Palmer for not doing it, especially publicly at the Golden Globes. :) There might still be hope for the womankind, even in the US.

  151. wakeupmaggie

Oh jeez. I get up in the morning and Amanda Palmer is the biggest bone of contention on the poll. It’s freaking ridiculous. I pause and exercise restraint.

Thank you to Heather and Jessica for putting together the awesome poll. I’ve never been around for one of these and am staggered by the amount of time and energy it must have taken to get it all up in a timely manner…or at all. I don’t remember ever having seen so many pics from an awards show from GFY and I’ve been semi following this blog for around 4 years, I think.

That sounds like a back-handed compliment, but I crash my computer and lose my links around 3 times a year.

  152. Shannon

So disappointed that Olivia Wilde was not on best dressed and Mariah Carey was not on worst.

Voted for Christina Hendricks because she’s just beautiful and she wore that dress, it did not wear her.

Worst- Drunkface- that dress made her chest look freaky.

  153. Bambi Anne Dear

Excuse me but has Amanda Palmer got hairy legs? At first I thought it must have been the fishnets making them look hirsute but then I saw her underarms. Hmmm, well, not my cup of tea nor about 5,185,450,886 others’ cups of various flavoured teas. But I guess she’s made her point now in no uncertain terms. (Which is???) Perhaps she doesn’t normally attend functions such as this or wear such feminine attire. And maybe she didn’t have the full-length mirror at home to see just how vile and visible the outer panties were. But puh-lease. Taking off said panties in full view of the world? Just do it in the bathroom for crying out loud! And the visible G doesn’t even look that good either.

  154. TonyG

Obviously, someone’s been up all night voting for Amanda Palmer, refreshing their cookies, and voting again. Ballot stuffing is so Republican!

  155. mar

i would have voted for carey mulligan in the best dressed category. the dress was pretty and original and she pulled it off beautifully even if she needed to hoist it up a bit… and her hair makes everything super cute.
also, i would have liked to see calista flockhart and gabourey sidibe as options…

  156. quincy

Amanda Palmer-coin operated boy lover, she has a great body, the beaded dress was pretty.

  157. Sweetsinger

I see most people aren’t taking best dressed seriously. Or someone is packing the ballot-box.
Amanda Palmer’s ploy certainly worked: she is the talk of the show, fug-wise.
For best dressed tho, Zoe Saldana rocks–unusual gown pulled off with great panache.

    Looking forward to the Oscars!

  158. Danielle

I’m writing in for Dianna Agron, she was absolutely STUNNING on the red carpet. Her dress was one of those rarities where it looked great standing still and in motion

  159. Lara Jane

Geez. I’m ignoring the Palmer votes for Best and calling a three-way tie for Weaver, Hendricks (my vote), and Garner!

I’m not offended by Palmer’s hairy legs or pits, or that her boobs were hanging out. Her dress was gorgeous, something I’d covet in a vintage clothing store window, but I think it was supremely tacky for her to undress on the red carpet, even if it was on the way out. If you’re defending her, I’m guessing you bought your moral compass from her website.

Also, I could almost guarantee that her fans are not regulars here at GFY. They probably came here via Twitter.

  160. mar

by the way, i don’t understand all the love for christina hendricks’ dress… even if she’s gorgeous (the skin, omg, the hair!) to me her dress was just as bad as nicole kidman’s.

  161. Meredith

Wow, I think Jennifer Garner looked awful. The drab color really washed her out, she’s dieting and exercising away her natural prettiness, and her hair was possibly the worst of the night. It somehow managed to look prom-ish yet matronly at the same time.

  162. MG

My real faves were Anna Paquin (though I prefer Stephen Moyer as an accessory over those trag shoes) and Olivia Wilde, but I vote Jen Garner here. She looked flat out stunning and the dress was just interesting enough with the back straps and metallic. Obviously I like shiny things.

  163. Li

I’m not offended by Amanda Palmer. I’m annoyed by her. You could throw a rock in Los Angeles and hit a woman like her: probably went to art school but dropped out before getting a degree; has been in a few bands; goes to warehouse raves; dabbles in lesbianism because it’s trendy; has danced in a burlesque show (it’s not stripping, it’s *art*). Once you’ve been around enough women like her, it’s eyeroll-inducing. Honey, we get it. You’re not shackled by convention. You’re just so edgy and unbound by the rules. We know, we know. *yawn*

  164. jennifer

Where’s Helen Mirren – hands down the most elegant of the night.

  165. isabel

hm, where is olivia wilde for best dressed?!? she totally deserved it, therefore i refuse to vote for best dressed unless shes up there as one of the nominees.

  166. Pamela Kershaw

I’m surprised there was no mention of MO’nique, whose dress and hair looked ok, but couldn’t wait to show off her unshaven legs for the camera. So gross!

  167. christiana bride

this is so interesting… and sort of scary.

why would people suggest that it’s fine that amanda palmer “not shave” BUT if she’s “going to go to the golden globes it’s the least she can do”.

    ??

the most frightening thing about hollywood is how incredibly in the dark ages it is regarding feminism – the roles and rules are STRICT and it’s very ballsy to break them. hollywood hasn’t changed a ton in that respect since 1950. i support anyone for not being afraid to be real in the face of those terrified people who aren’t willing to step out of the norm and take a risk for fear of being called “attention whore”.

  168. Sandy

I love how everyone thinks Amanda’s body hair is gross and disgusting. You do realize that what you’re basically saying is that all women are naturally gross and disgusting, right? All women have body hair. It’s how nature/god intended them to be. The fact that so many people find women naturally disgusting is sad. A woman can’t be attractive unless she shaves 90% of her body? And if a woman decides to embrace the natural state of her body she’s called trashy, nasty, and gross??

Also, the pictures of her changing were not even taken at the golden globes. They were taken after the afterparty. they were leaving and the photogs stopped them and asked her to put the “naked” dress back on so they could take pictures of it, and she did. When she changed into her second (more conservative) dress of the evening, she did in fact do it in the bathroom. But the fact that they didn’t even want photos of that dress just shows that this all is more about the photogs wanting to get their risque pics than amanda looking for attention.

  169. Sandy

Oh, and for what it’s worth, Here is a pic of the other dress she wore that evening (the one that everyone has ignored):

    http://twitpic.com/z0yct

  170. Kate

“Men shave, as a function of grooming, it’s not like women are the only ones oppressed by this little ritual.”

That logic might work if all men shaved, or if men were expected to shave their armpits and legs and were ridiculed when they didn’t.

  171. ichbineinberliner

    @li

that is completely untrue. AFP is not a stripper, is an intelligent person, and is far less pretentious than all the crap people are slinging about her.

Any actiona of hers that appear to support sucha statement are likely more ironic than purposefully “arty”

  172. Ana

i just feel i have to link through to this, because SOOOO many people are complaining about amanda’s behavior,
and i too was initially shocked, especially because i love amanda and i couldn’t help but think NOOOOO! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS, YOU WILL NEVER BE TAKEN SEIROUSLY AGAIN, PEOLE THINK YOU’RE AN ATTENTION SEEKING STRIPPER!!!!!!

but she was pulled aside for additional shots, and asked to change by the paparazzi and just though, fuck it why not, which is something that i can totally respect, and is for me a fine explanation.

here is the link to the interview that explained this to me:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lee-stranahan/amanda-palmer-naked-dead_b_429343.html

  173. Sandy

“I’m surprised there was no mention of MO’nique, whose dress and hair looked ok, but couldn’t wait to show off her unshaven legs for the camera. So gross!”

Um, she was not “showing off” her legs to the camera. It was pouring rain out, all the women were lifting their dresses as they moved around to keep from dragging them on the wet ground. She just happened to be holding her dress up still when that photo was taken.

  174. parina

The people dismissing Amanda as a classless attention whore are missing the point of artists–it’s their JOB to make statements that challenge our expectations and make us reflect on where those expectations come from. Is it factually gross for women to have unshaven armpits and legs, or does our culture just teach us it is? Why is it sexy/classy when blonde Barbie celebrities wear revealing outfits just to look attractive for men, but offensive when a smart, talented individual does it with an expressive purpose?

Amanda was clearly having fun with both the event and herself and not just being a crazy attention whore like Britney Spears. (It’s a pity people are miscasting the outfit changing as a strip instead of blaming the photographers, but haters will hate.) I’d rather like an artist who does smart, interesting things than one who’s just a paper doll.

  175. psyche

I was between Zoe Saldana, Maggie G and Jayma Mays for best (though I recall thinking how good, if skinny, Halle Berry looked when she walked on stage), so I might have been tempted to go that way too.

It was a bad year for the globes; I can’t recall a year where I’ve *disliked* so many of the dresses. I’m not even “meh” (though its not like I loathe a lot of them either). That being said, I gave the prize to Patricia Arquette for the old lady frump (both fit and pattern).

  176. Diana Goddessof the hunt

I know they didn’t walk the red carpet, but Halle Berry and Jodie Foster were both very stunning.

  177. Anonymous

Please stick to talking about the clothes; thanks!

If we didn’t feature some people in the poll, it’s just because we forgot to write about them (like Olivia Wilde, who did look amazing). It’s been a LONG week.

  178. M.Amanda

I really didn’t like Christina Hendrick’s look. While her hair was as gorgeous as ever, her makeup looked much too heavy. She does have wonderful curves, but I felt the fit was pushing them into cartoon proportions rather than just celebrating them. I also did not like the color.

On the other hand, I thought Nicole Kidman’s was perfect.

It was close, but I eventually voted for Sigourney Weaver over Jennifer Garner and Patricia Arquette. Not to enrage the Amanda Palmer fans, but I just don’t think her nomination in either category can be taken seriously.

  179. MLS

Amanda Palmer winning in BOTH categories. Proof that there is no god.

  180. Jem

My favourites were Gabourey Sidibe, Fergie and Jennifer Garner.

  181. Sus

I still believe Lauren Graham should be in the Best category. That dress was hot. I loved Carey Mulligan’s dress as well.

  182. Anonymous

J.Gar got my vote for best dressed – there were a lot of strong contenders, but she was the only one I had zero nitpicks about. The woman looked amazing, head to toe.

Amanda Palmer got my worst dressed vote not for the undressing behavior or the underarm hair, but for the fact that I think it’s tacky to WEAR dresses that show everything. It’s easy to catch eyes when you’re naked. It’s classy to do it clothed.

  183. Megan

I would just like to say that I have never seen Xtina Aguilera look more beautiful. It was actually shocking. I think she should win for most improved. Maggie G. too. She looked great.

  184. Parina

Why does every woman have to be “classy” to deserve praise? She wasn’t trying to catch men’s eyes with her sex appeal like everyone else, she was expressing herself.

  185. Becca

It’s a serious toss-up between Christina Hendricks and Zoe Saldana. They both look unbelieveable. Had to give it up for Christina Hendricks though, as her body is harder to dress and all I can think of when I see her is “va va voom.” No amount of plastic surgery can faithfully imitate that kind of perfection. Zoe does look beautiful though! I would cut off a finger to wear that dress for an evening. So difficult!

  186. Jen Alien-Spouse

    Fun!

I’m voting Meryl Streep as best dressed, because she looked great and so happy in that dress (maybe that had something to do with her winning too), plus it was a design by Project Runway alum Chris March. I LOVE him!

Worst has to Patsy and Tommy. They both have great genes and yet seem determined to sabotage them with their wardrobe choices. That’s just damn ungrateful.

  187. JESR

Haven’t voted yet, want to think about Jennifer Garner for a while longer, but I need to nominate AmandaFuckingPalmer for best Twitter coverage of the event, including a dandy pic from the ladys room with Julie Benz and Jenna Fischer, and Angela Kinsey from The Office. AFP looks, in the mirror in that shot, very much like a creature from another world, but it’s a world peopled by women with muscles and facial expression. And body hair, quelle horreure! (insert eyeroll)

  188. Joshwahhh

Listen people, best and worst-dressed is not on the strength of the garment ALONE. It’s best DRESS-ED-, not best DRESS. So, if someone is wearing a garment that tugs their boobs down, they are not the best-dressed. If someone’s dress WOULD have been nice with a slip under it, they are NOT best-dressed.

  189. Lisa

    Comment for Jason Bateman…..

The Golden Globes – so easy a Bateman could do it!

  190. Ash

Geeze, guys! Amanda Palmer changed exiting the NBC party back into that dress because the photographers were demanding it. She changed into her other dress in the bathroom, but the photographers were like “we want that picture now!” and Amanda Palmer being Amanda Palmer, gave them what they wanted. It wasn’t like she was EVER completely nude. She had her other panties under the ruffly ones.

She was going to wear a slip, but all of the slips they brought in that were supposed to look good looked bad, so she went for this, instead. It was a gorgeous dress, the “nudity” was tasteful, (and the dress wasn’t ‘nude’ or ‘oops! see-through’ like other stars in years past.) and everything matched.

Why doesn’t anyone bother to check out the back story before bitching and moaning about it?

  191. Jen

I had a feeling after I registered my first vote that Amanda Palmer would top both lists. Yes, the dress is great, but it’s not “Best Dress” it’s “Best Dressed” so I think manner of wearing matters.

  192. Heidi

Where’s Courteney Cox on this list? She looked all kinds of fab.

  193. jasmintee

Naaaaw! Did the evil AFP shock all your glittery-fashionable-shaved bums? Poor things, you.

  194. Heidi

Where’s Courteney Cox on this list? She looked all kinds of fab.

  195. Anonymous

Let’s talk about the actual celebrities! I have to vote for Kruger. I’ve been thinking about it and I decided I LOVE that dress.

Worst, I think is Arquette and Jane. GOD, they’re a mess.

  196. ebeth

How is Amanda Palmer winning for best AND worst dressed? As someone already said she wasn’t even dressed!

  197. kate13

I am puzzled by the tone taken by all of the Palmerites. Who called her evil? Much of what was written in the original posting was positive. I understand that being a devoted fan can make a person a little defensive, but this stage should be behind us, I would say no later than the 10th grade. We are all impressed by your enthusiasm. If our little community here is making you all unhappy, you are free to congratulate one another on your own so-sophisticated tastes elsewhere.

Personally I am neither more nor less interested in her musical career now than I was Sunday morning. And I am not going to be made to feel guilty because I choose to shave my armpits. You can feel sorry for my lack of enlightenment if you want, my kowtowing to convention, yadda yadda. Would I be a more authentic feminist if I submitted to a different set of conventions? Besides, shaving makes my deodorant work better.

  198. Kelly

I have to say that I completely disagree with having both Sandra Bullock (who I hate but looked glorious in that purple gown- great color!) and Kate Bosworth in the fugs. I think its refreshing that Kate wasn’t wearing any jewelry- and who cares if her shoe came undone- I thought she looked amazing.

  199. sugarkat

Jennifer Garner wins best-dressed, in spite of her super-thinness, because she is styled beautifully, the dress is lovely and fits like a dream, and, best of all, she looks positively radiant (beyond even the shiny-shiny of the dress). However, Jayme Mays is a close second, as her dress is made of wonderfulness and she accessorized and styled very well. Admirable radiance tops adorable perkiness.

Chloë Sevigny wins worst fug by wearing bitchface so severe it makes me want to take a sander to her face until the bitchness is thoroughly removed. She may be able to act, but every time I see her not acting, my secret desire to hire a valkyrie to punch her, to the accompaniment of dramatic German music, until she can no longer move, increases. I’m coming close to loathing her, and this loathing makes her stupid effing dress and awful make-up and hair that much more unforgivable.

Amanda Palmer can’t win best-dressed because she’s not fully-dressed, but she can’t win worst-dressed because the dress that’s there is so freakin’ awesome. While we are on this topic, your willing and even helpful presence at that scene saddens me, Neil Gaiman. Please don’t do that again.

  200. Victoria

Kate13: There’s not much to be puzzled by. Many of these comments dismiss Palmer as trashy, an attention whore and a superficial artsy stereotype…because she doesn’t shave her armpits and was told to change into a different dress by photographers?

It’s not that Palmer’s feelings are hurt and she needs our defense, and we’re not offended that not everyone understands or likes her work. And no one’s saying people who shave are awful. Heck, I shave. But there’s something wrong with society when women make derogatory comments about another woman, rather than letting her do what she wants with her own pits and being happy that she’s out there fighting to give you grooming options.

Are you all really happier being boxed in?

  201. GFY Heather

To Kelly: My issue with Kate was really the hair.

To Kate13: I love you. Shaving DOES make deodorant work better.

  202. granny

I’d say this poll has been truly freeped!

  203. Kaeleigh

I loved Camilla Belle’s dress, whoever the hell she is.

It was a tough call, but Drew Barrymore’s gorgeous yet strange dress won me over in the end. I loved that it was high couture with its strange sproutings, but the colours and fit on Drew were perfect. She looked like a true Hollywood mega-star imo, and this is how I want my mega-star actresses to look on the red carpet – no punches pulled GLAM!

Props to Jennifer Garner and Sigourney Weaver for their sterling efforts too.

In the worst category I had to vote Julianne Moore’s dreadful, gloomy sack as one of the worst dresses of all time. Her shoes were also terrible, in fact they could only have been worse if they’d been Anna Paquin’s! But her earrings were to die for.

I also hated Bryce Dallas Howard’s and Drunkface McCord’s, hated them to the ends of the earth.

Now I’m going to be a different kind of controversial – I liked Lindsay Lohan’s very funky sparkly hooded cocktail dress, and *deep breath in* I really liked Nicole Kidman’s retro looking peach gown for being completely different to anything else I’ve seen and for its intricate form. I thought it was lovely and refreshing.

I happily voted for AFP, and not just because I’m a fan of her music, or get a happy warm feeling from her and Neil Gaiman’s romance. I thought her dress was really pretty and showed a distinct style, as opposed to the usual prom/ball-gown styles chosen for red carpet events. She had her nips covered and, hurrah, was wearing panties. So, her ‘nudity’ consisted of….seeing her tummy? OMG stop the presses, women have tummies! Considering that if she had shown up in the past I would have expected a tattered black sheath with stripey tights underneath, I think she rocked it.

(In all honesty, had AFP not been up for a vote, I would have voted for Yosaffbridge, since anyone who can pack that much woman into that dress deserves to have their label associated with a Best-Dressed list. In comparison with AFP, though, she loses out because of the dress being yet another boring, ball-gowny creation.)

Drunkface, on the other hand – whoever designed that dress possibly forgot to wear their glasses that day. Oddly, it isn’t the handsy-looking-things that disturbed me so much as the dinginess of the material, as though it was a handsy-dress that had been mouldering in an attic for a few years. Hence a vote for Worst.

Frankly, I love Patricia Arquette, and I don’t understand the hate for Normal woman’s bodies and dress. She’s not spectacular, and her hubbie is kind of dorky, but don’t hold it against her.

  207. Ducki

Sigourney Weaver’s won out for me in the end, but I thought Felicity Huffman’s was gorgeous too. I guess I like something simpler with some romance. I thought these other dresses were basically all a nightmare. I was more shocked by the fact that all those horrible, puffy, wackadoo numbers got FAB reviews. No no no no no! I’m all for invention, but no! Noooooo! I wish I could remember who had that one horrible pink 80s prom nightmare one because that was totally the worse, way worse than Amanda Palmer’s, but there are way too on the best dressed list for me to hop through all those posts again.

Anyone who thinks Amanda Palmer/Mo’nique’s body hair is gross/unhygenic/unnatural/whatever else, have you ever considered that women have only been shaving for less than 100 years? What do you think women did back in the 19th century and before?! And anyway, since when is it “European grooming?” I’m European and I shave…

  210. Li

was told to change into a different dress by photographers?

She was not held down by the photographers and forced to change in public. She could have gone back inside, changed in a bathroom, then come back out for final photos. Applaud her behavior if you like, but please don’t try to absolve her of responsibility by somehow palming it off on the photographers. That’s silly.

Amanda’s had a busy night – ballot stuffing, adopting various online commenting personae, strategizing about getting maximum exposure for minimal talent etc. Let her post away in peace and let those of us interested in actresses, genuine talent and authentic fashion spectacles continue the conversation.

  212. Elle

Voted for AFP for both, as Neil says; ‘I’m pretty sure that either would make her happy, so I voted for her in both categories.’

  213. Diana

I am amazed at the overwhelming stupidity of the comments left here by Amanda Palmer fans. Hello, we’re voting for best or worst dressed here, yes people will take hairy pits into consideration when making a decision, it has nothing to do with being anti feminism, it is only a matter of taste. Someone said we hate women’s natural appearance. Women shower, brush their teeth, wear makeup, wear CLOTHES for heaven’s sake, none of that is natural but it sure makes women look and smell better. So does shaving. Armpit hair with a gown, in my opinion, does not look good, and I believe that is what this poll is about. As to her ridiculous and tacky behavior, her being an artist does not excuse that. Please!! Some idiot said we would excuse such behavior if it were J. Lo or Britney Spears but AP is ‘persecuted’ for not being a ‘Barbie’. Are you shitting me?? If Britney did that she would be MASSACRED by the press.

Zoe Saldana’s dress was probably my favorite thing I can remember seeing on the red carpet, ever, even though as the FG so astutely pointed out, it seems like something that should have been a train wreck. Gorgeous.

I voted Amanda Palmer worst dressed because she wasn’t dressed, not in the verb form of the word, although that dress was f-in awesome and her antics were definitely fun. And she’s pretty. So calm down, dudes.

  215. LD

I really liked Diana Argon’s dress best, or Robert Downey Jr.’s wife…

  216. Diana

by the way to whoever wrote ‘But there’s something wrong with society when women make derogatory comments about another woman’ regarding Amanda Palmer
um is that not what this website is about?? hence it’s being named ‘GO FUG YOURSELF’
If that offends u go away

  217. MimosasForAll

Fug Girls – this is what happens when you focus on irrelevant, failed wanna-be’s like Ms. Palmer. Next time just let her strip in the gutter and leave her there.

  218. GFY Jessica

All right, guys, let’s all just have a Diet Coke and take a breather here — it’s just the Golden Globes! We have a long awards season ahead of us, so save your energy.

Everyone please be polite to each other. Calling anyone “‘tards” and “stupid” is not cool. I personally feel like we’ve covered The Amanda Palmer Issue in great and passionate detail, so maybe moving on to discuss the merits and demerits of other people might make this a more fruitful and stimulating conversation going forward.

    Thanks, and carry on!

I preferred more people amongst the contenders for the ‘worst dressed’ title. As gorgeous as Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz et al looked they weren’t taking any risks. Marion C, Maggie G and Chloe S had beautiful frocks and although they had details or colours that were more easily scrutinised, I had so much pleasure seeing them walk the red carpet.

Yes, because most failed wanna-be’s get to perform multiple times with the Boston Pops Orchestra (including their renowned New Year’s Eve Show).

A large part of the reason I chose Christina Hendricks as best dressed (besides the fact that the cut flattered her voluptuous figure–a challenge in itself) was that she chose the absolute perfect color for her skin and hair. She positively glowed. By contrast, I thought Diane Kruger, for example, chose a color that was much too strong for her ethereal, blonde beauty. As for worst…gosh, how to decide? There was too much competition for dowdiness/frumpiness to choose Patricia or Jeanne or Juliette (seriously, Juliette?) or… . Same with the “I know it’s really cutting edge, but…no,” group. Beating the others (including LiLo) in the cheesy/tacky category, for sheer tastelessness, was my winning, losing candidate, Amanda Palmer. The hairy pits, the shredded stockings, and the nudity were enough to do it, but, as you pointed out, she sabotaged what was essentially a gorgeous garment.

  223. Lexie

Am I the only one who thought Zoe Saldana’s dress was totally fug? It looked like curtains to me.

Sigorney Weaver for the win; that green dress is just stunning.

  224. Violet

I’m with Amanda Palmer for best dressed. I loved her dress, regardless of where she put it on. With most dresses being as boring as they were, she totally deserves the best dressed one.
And speaking of boring: Aniston! Hello, early ’90. I can’t even remember when I last saw a dress with a slight, unless bad metal video count.
