High Fugshion: Fashion Week Hits and Misses, Days 2 to Whatever

Yeah, so once the Grammys and the BAFTAs and the shows and the yada-yada descended in earnest, it was hard to  keep up with our best intentions to pull selects from each show we saw — plus some we didn’t — and highlight the hits and misses. However, we hope this will do. It’s not complete, but at least it’s a step forward in day one. We are moving slowly along the timeline. We are stepping into the present. We are… delirious, a little, if I’m being honest.

The top half of that first outfit is totally SWINTON!

  2. Kit

I am totally Kate Spade`s girl. Also, in a different way, Victoria Beckham`s. :)

    • Faye

I think we’re twins, Kit! Kate Spade would be my weekend casual going out look, but I like Victoria Beckham for more formal occasions. I own a few Victoria Beckham dresses (the non-cracked out, more classic-looking ones), and I always get so many compliments on them. I really liked a lot of the things she showed for fall.

Who is Miguel Adrover and how can we get him banned forever from Fashion Week? Loved all Donna Karan and all Preen except the nips … and, I’m sorry, but I just don’t believe that Posh and Rach really design anything …

    • Laucie

You are so right. The other pictures ran the gamut of attractiveness/wearability/creativity. Adrover’s were just offensive and stupid.

      • anny

No, no, he’s totally making a TIMELESS STATEMENT, like that chick, what’s-her-face, who flipped off the crowd at that Madonna thing the other weekend …

      • vandalfan

I thought she had delicious apple fritters on her feet.

What did I do to cause my high school days to appear on the runway? Tell me what it was and I’ll undo it RIGHT AWAY. Wearing blankets strapped over your shoulder or those dreadful gaucho-pants-looking things from Rachel Zoe is just….decades past their prime. And it didn’t look good when we did it in the olden days, either.

Also, why do the models from the PREEN show have such dreadful hair? Did somebody forget to bring brushes and blow-dryers?

Slide #10 frightens me! It’s like a 1920s clown suit in tweed, but with a conehead veil and clysdale feet. NO GOOD.

I hope someone wears the “up yours” hat to a televised red carpet thing, if only so we can see the censors frantically try to blur it out. Terrible and funny at the same time.

This weekend I re-watched Heathers. Gotta love those 80′s movies. The hippy -guidance counselor was absolutely sporting the belted blanket and buffalo plaid. And now it’s definitely making a comeback.

  7. Claire L

I would SO wear picture 1. I would, it makes me happy!

#3′s blouse is to die for

    # 4 is how I feel about work and most humans right now ( but it’s sooo fugly)

    #6

#10 is exactly what my mom’s mime outfit, that she made for me in 2nd grade, looked like and she couldn’t understand why I didn’t like it…. she made me a clown!

#19 is like every bit of clothing I can afford…colors are FABULOUS, but the cut is awful .

#21 ( the top) looks like those black bars they put across people’s faces or nipples in Cosmo’s back pages….However, get rid of the nipple bars, I would so wear that outfit.

Didn’t SWINTON wear outfit 3 without the hat?

Didn’t Leelee Sobieski try to wear outfit 3 without the hat and instead just come off as if she was trying to SWINTON her way out of a paper bag (which, I guess, is what she actually was doing)?

I actually get the idea of the blanket in outfit 2. But ugh, go full kilt or go home. As it stands, the poor model looks like a chimney sweep in Highlander.

I am in awe of the subtlety of Miguel Adrover. Although…somehow, both pieces seem more fitting for Xtina. While Gaga and Nicki would both be more likely to wear the things, neither of them has sang the phrase, “And if you don’t like it, fuck you.” Or worn it emblazoned on a T-shirt.

  9. dvj

Hang in there, girls, you’re doing great and spreading much joy on the internet. I’ll never be grumpy about summer postings again.

  10. ceecee

I love #6 and I’d would wear it EVERYWHERE.

  11. liaso

Thought #1 was really cute. Want, want, want #6!! So cute. Liked the skirt from #12, even if I’d like more color. The coats in #14 look too plastic-y for my taste. Thanks for the post!

  12. Sarah

How can Beckham rip off McCartney’s design like that? Weird.

  13. Caroleena Stantonova

I simply refuse to wear any design by Posh until she shows evidence of teeth. Anyone ever see her s m i l e? Perhaps we don’t want to.

    • Claire L

I read, somewhere, that she really hates her smile. I totally sympathize. I’ve seen candid shots of her laughing/smile and I think she looks charming…..but we all have those little things we see as a flaw, even if the rest of the world doesn’t. She’s one of those people I never want to like…but when I read her interviews, I do.

      • Heather

She smiles a ton at the actual shows — she’s totally charming, laughs a lot.

      • Guerra

I love how she always says David get the “he’s the good looking one” & “she’s the funny one” I think she would be a blast to hang out with, I dont think she takes her self that seriously & I’m loving her clothes!!

  14. Sajorina

DKNY’s outfit #3 is AWESOME and screams SWINTON to me! LOVE Naeem Khan’s outfit #6… I would wear it happily and I think Shailene Woodley wold rock it! Thakoon’s dress #17 = COVET! Victoria Beckham’s outfits are nice and I’d wear them! Kate Spade’s designs are adorable… WANT those polka dotted shoes!!! Hilfiger’s #15 boots are calling my name! And, no matter how hard Rachel Zoe tries, I’ll never see her as a designer… FAIL!

I thought the #2 wool skirt ensemble WAS me from high school. I owned every piece she’s wearing, and I’d so wear it again. Except not the blanket – never the blanket. I never wear stuff like that, even scarves that people wear now; it looks so nice, but they get in the way, they always fall off…I’m not skilled.

I liked the houndstoothy dress too and I do love me some oxblood, which makes me sound like a Cullen.

  17. neiges

I <3 Preen, Donna Karan & Tommy Hilfiger this year. Does that make me slightly skeezo?
Kate Spade (more quotation than innovation), Posh and Zoe, I don't understand.
On another note, if Posh doesn't like her smile, doesn't that make her dumb and a poser? Imagine if she didn't like her legs, would she be carried around in a wheelchair? I mean, come on, how robotic is never to smile for a picture?

    • Claire L

I don’t think it makes her any more of a “poser” than people who wear foundation because they don’t like their skin ( me), or people who highlight their hair because they don’t like the natural color…. If she didn’t like her legs, she’d wear slacks ( the wheelchair scenario came off as kind of mean, don’t know if you meant it like that). If you are 100% OK with every feature you have, more power to you. *I* am not…and found it refreshing that Victoria is similar.

  18. Mikki

I totally love that first outfit by Donna Karan – if only I were rich and skinny enough to own it! Lots of weirdo stuff overall, but I do like the rest of DKNY and even some of Posh’s. Those brown dog-crap shoes have got to be the UGLIEST things ever – what are they thinking??

  19. namidu

The skirt in #4 reminds me of nothing so much as the Crown Royal bag I keep my scrabble letters in. Also – JESUS GOD WHAT IS HAPPENING TO SHOES? I’m going to have to start Thomas Jane-ing it if these heinous trends ever take over the normal person market.

  20. taylor

The F-you shoes make me confused: given the way the middle finger is placed, aren’t you basically just flipping off the ground? Because no one walks in a way that will bring the sole of their foot up high enough to actually flip off the people in front of them. So not only are they rude in a trite, I’m-stuck-in-elementary-school way, they’re ill-conceived, as well.

  21. Sam

Love a lot of the Preen collection, even if it’s getting a little same-old-same-old now.

Girls, please address the crotch-and-boob-tulle-explosions at Marchesa today.

  22. CJ

Never been a DKNY girl, but man, I have to check out that collection. Except for the belted couch blanket, I love everything. The black and white ensemble in particular is super fab.

Love the oxblood. I can see the patent oxblood coat on Pippa. She dresses like a real person with lots of flats for walking and knits because she probably has to move around a lot during the day, but Pippa has VERY good taste in coats, wears them well, and they always elevate whatever she is wearing. Whenever I see a really nice coat, I think Pippa.

  23. Claire Zulkey

#15 reminds me of the outfit American Girl Samantha Parkington would wear to school.

  24. Dani

Slide 6, the Naeem Khan dress you picked out for Nina Dobrev, might actually be my ideal dress/dream come true.

    • jean

Any woman would look fantastic in that dress–that’s why it’s so terrific. I can see it on so many bodytypes. How about the red-head from Mad Men? Or Zoe Saldana. Or The Duchess or Emma Stone. There’s probably an upper-age limit. I think Tina Fey could pull it off still since she likes that shape. Love it. Covet it.

    • Anissa

It would also look divine on Emma Stone.

Oh and Duchess Katherine has to wear that first look!!!
