Hilariously Played, Maggie Grace

I need you to know that, at least in the pictures we have, nobody else wore a hat to this event.

I’m not sure, but I think somebody may have pranked Maggie Grace by telling her she drew the short straw and thus had to attend the opera in the role of the Phantom.

I would hate to have been behind her at the opera, if in fact she actually went to the opera. The self delusion of people is in exhaustible.

So many things wrong with this:

The dress is boring and unflattering. It makes her look bigger than she is.

    The hat is inappropriate.

The hat doesn’t even really go with the dress.

    Yuck.

She is possibly trying to draw attention away from that awful dress.

I for one would love for dressy ladies’ hats to come back into style, so I say let Maggie rock the hat… just maybe not this particular hat.

I’ve always thought this woman had regrettably piggy little eyes. Hence, I approve of the dipped brim and the veil.

Wow! What an unkind thing to say. She’s a beautiful girl and we all, even you, have features we have to work around.

Not really a cool comment, Chuckell. Love this site b/c the discussions are smart — not thoughtless and mean.

Oh, no doubt. But then again, I’ve never expected or asked anyone to look at my face on tv or up on a movie screen, where my numerous shortcomings in the looks department would be quite obvious.

FugNationals, on the other hand, are asked and expected to confine their comments to clothes, accessories, and styling–and sometimes behavior–and keep their opinions on body size/shape and facial features to themselves.

I think it would be OK to say her eyes appear small, or narrowly set, or that her makeup doesn’t flatter them, or something. I understand what you mean, but use of the word “piggy” would set off anyone’s alarms.

I don’t understand why one would wear a hat that would block that much of your vision to the opera. Unless she got the opera confused with the symphony and thought there would not be much to see.

You might be onto something there, Sarie. Maybe Maggie really doesn’t like the opera but got herself roped into this appearance by her publicist and the hat is a clever means to sleep through endless recitatives without anyone noticing.

What was on the program? Perhaps she’s beta testing a new personal heads-up closed-captioning display.

And here is where I am bound by the fact that I am an opera singer to point out that Phantom of the Opera is a musical ABOUT an opera theatre, and would never be performed at the likes of the Metropolitan Opera House. It plays on B’way with the other musicals. That said, agreed – that hat is ridiculous!

Good one, Heather! But, actually, I quite like this and she looks FABULOUS in it! I’m just sorry for whoever had to sit behind her!

    I just can’t stop laughing.

Which HAS to be what she was going for, right?

    Right?…

    Maybe?…

I love the cobalt blue color of this dress, and the silhouette of the dress paired with the hat (or maybe the theoretical concept of wearing a hat with this dress) reminds me of Edwardian fashion, which I also love. Too bad the angle of the hat is so silly.

Hat is at the wrong angle. Dress and hat don’t go together. Keep trying.

Wow. It’s like she’s in elementary school and got the date wrong and showed up at school in her Halloween costume on October 30.

I would love this dress on someone much more mature, and if it fit that person. The color and the draping of the fabric are beautiful. But it’s rather mother-of-the-bride, and it hasn’t been tailored for Grace – I don’t know, maybe tailoring would make all the difference.

The hat, well, my first thought, in an echo of many above, is that sitting behind her would be very unpleasant. Though ladies are not required to remove hats indoors, I hope she did!

My second thought is that it looks ridiculous anyway. I’m reminded of some of the crazier things worn to the royal wedding. Now, there, it might not have looked out of place! :-D

Can I just say how much I love Fug Nation? I visit a lot of sites (mainly newspapers) where it’s de rigueur to make mean-spirited, personal attacks in the comments, and this is such a refreshing breeze. It’s not a trivial thing. Thank you!

Oh wow, that makes her look like 20 years older LOL

I gather she was trying to avoid watching anything at the opera. This is a hat for the races.
