One more, indecision rends me.
This was going to be a well-played at first. Then I gawked myself out of it. (Too much staring is bad for the knee-jerk reactions.) Generally, my boat doesn’t float on taupe; since I’m not terribly fond of blood, except inasmuch as it performs vital functions in my body, I’m also a little squicked out by how much this dress seems to be an ode to the circulatory system and/or the product of a Twilight superfan whose Etsy shop is devoted to Things That Will Make Edward Cullen Hot And Bothered.
And yet I STILL can’t help thinking Kate Bosworth pulled this off really nicely, and that I kind of wish Kirsten Dunst had done this exact look instead of that “I Do-Si-Do” square-dancing wedding extravapalooza.
Then again, blood. Thus the back-and-forth.

It might be fab if the waist were a little higher. As it is, she appears disproportionately long of torso. Also, I think she could have chosen a better bag. Maybe something square to contrast with the loose, drapey softness of the dress.
The scale of the dress is all wrong. Too long, too. Probably fierce on a taller chick.
This was one of my favorites of the night. She took a risk and it paid off.
Darn it, I LIKED it until you pointed out that it looks like veins, and brought up Edward.
Love her hair, make-up and accessories. Hate the dress.
i LOVE this.
i think it looks great on her (maybe this isn’t the best angle, but it falls beautifully) and i especially love that she has managed to go against the grain of “i’ve got a hot body. don’t beleive me? here, i’ll show you.” skin-tight trend that so many celebs fall victim to on the red carpet, without falling into “i bought this 3 sizes too big to hide how disgustingly skinny i am” territory a la rachel zoe.
this is a well-played if i ever saw one.
Did you see the back? Fantastic! I wasn’t crazy about it myself – on the fence as it were – until I saw the back.
I loved it and then you made me think about blood and guts and then it got a little gross. its still fab, but I wish she was against a different backdrop than the red carpet. it gets all muddy.
I like the fabric quite well, and it drapes beautifully, but I can’t say that I’m crazy about the top – it looks a little droopy to me with the low waist and the floppy sleeves.
Hair and make up are great. The taupe doesn’t wash her out, which is a big surprise because she is so blonde, but yeah, the veiny pattern on this dress just doesn’t work.
Overall, I like this. I have always appreciated KBoz’s love of neutrals and I think that they suit her, but this dress reads a little too “old lady.”
Annabelle, you are completely correct about that blah blob that she’s carrying. She really missed an opportunity to add a little youth/color/whimsy/structure/fun to her look.
It reminds me of coral
Kate is gorgeous. The dress is way too Blanche Devereaux Romances A Toupeed Gentleman At A Banquet Honoring One Of The Other Golden Girls With Hilarious Results.
I think this looks beautiful in an Art Deco, 1920′s sort of way. And the circulatory bit doesn’t bug me, for some reason. I love her hair and her general styling. So the dress would be a maybe for me in general, but she and her stylists won me over. Good job, whoever you are!
I don’t hate it, and I don’t love it. Its just there.
Why do you always go for the thoughts that give you the heeby jeebys? At first glance I thought she looked like an elegant coral reef. Come on now! She looks lovely!
Anything but taupe, or beige, or peach (unless you’re one of three people with the skintone to rock it, which KateB is not). I keep wanting to see this in purples or greens or blues. Just not this unappealing mud color.
I like the pattern except around her knees, where it goes all cave painting instead of veins (and I was seeing leaf veins, not human veins, interestingly enough). The bits around her shoulders and the hem are almost wave-like in how the pattern flows, which works well for the cut of the dress, but then it goes all stagnant at her knees and my gaze gets stuck.
Like the dress reasonably well…but not on Kate. It IS too Blanche Devereaux, and belongs on a much older woman who has some curves…Kate’s skinny body is drowning in fabric!
Oh hell NO: the first things I thought of when I saw the fabric were vomit and skin conditions. There just isn’t anyplace good to go to from there. And since the shape strikes me as very blah, there is nothing here I can see wanting to save.
On the other hand, the bits of of actual Kate that are showing manage to look very pretty, which is quite a feat, under the circumstances.
I have to agree with Annie up there. Put this on Charlize Theron, and it would be gorgeous!
the cut is good the fabric is appealing but it’s the colors that are wrong. too washed out.
She IS dating Alexander SkarsgÄrd
Riley Keough is Kristen Stewart’s blonde twin! Or at least she’s the blonde wannabe-KStew. Same dour expression, messy hair, and the “i don’t want to be here” expression.
By God, there are two of them!
Had to post Riley Keough/Kristen Stewart comment here since there aren’t any comments enabled on that one!
Isn’t she swimming in a bit. Still, it’s very pretty.
The eyes (one bloodshot) and fractured nose on the skirt are freaking me out!
I really like this dress a lot. I’m not usually a fan of the taupe or beige colors on blonds, but I think the coral pattern makes it work on her. I think it is a refreshing break from all the one-shouldered or strapless orgami-detailed ruffled satin stuff everyone else has been wearing lately.
I LOVE this dress, it was my favorite of the night. You have to see pictures of the back and the beading up close. Its stunning, and reminds me of coral, not veins/blood. It’s subtle, and elegant, yet still makes you want to look again. Also, she is gorgeous.
I actually thought of the design as more of a sort of ocean coral than blood vessels, and I still do, thankfully. So I like it!
Well she IS supposedly dating Alexander Skarsgard, aka the uber attractive Eric the vampire on True Blood. If it’s a nod to any vampires, it’s probably that one!
MY gut reaction was, “me likey”, but if it had been in a different, better color, it would have been like, “sorry my head just exploded, that was so great”.
It’s a lovely dress, but it’s too big for her.
She looks flayed. Maybe the veins would be ok if the backdrop wasn’t the color of skin… like a deeper red, or an ivory… or it could have ivory veins on a red background and then she’d look like a steak!
I like the dress itself, but it looks way too big for her. She looks like a little girl playing dress up in her mom’s dress. Maybe if we could see her feet it wouldn’t look so disproportionate?
Love, LOVE it – definitely made me think of coral when I saw it (as opposed to veins and arteries. Like Naomi Watt’s dress, I am pre-disposed to love anything that looks vaguely Jazz Era, so I just swoon for this. I usually think Kate B. looks emaciated and cranky (redundant?), but I have to give it to her on this one.
All I could think of when I first saw this is the Blood Roots the aliens spray over everything in War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise. And anything reminding me of Tom Cruise is no good.
So, I loved this dress until the mental image of the blood vessels. I still like it, but that does kind of creep me out.
On another note – and I know it has nothing to do with Kate Bosworth, but I was thinking about how Oprah has big bazooms and she always seems to dress fairly well for her figure (particularly in the Oscar gown, which is lovely), and that she should counsel the lovely Christina Hendricks about that. Perhaps fug nation could arrange an intervention? That girl is too gorgeous to be walking around poorly dressed!
I shall call this the “Brain Hemmorhage” dress.
I mostly love it. It’s different and interesting without being wacky.
I just wish the top half was a bit smaller, because it has definitely veered over into the airspace of a somewhat deflated hot-air balloon.
She should keep this dress; it will look fabulous on her in 30 years. I approve wholeheartedly of going against the skintight trend, but this looks too much like it came from my (very elegant) grandma’s closet.
Nearly excellent: “my boat doesn’t float on taupe”. I would only make a slight change: “my boat don’t float on taupe”. It’s just more lyrical.
The dress is pretty meh, eh?
I love the fabric, but it looks way too big on her, she looks overwhelmed by the dress. Style is too old. Nice hair, at least she isn’t pursing her lips.
Zoe Saldana would rock the hell out of this dress.
I’m with the “fine on someone taller” crowd … front and length just swamp her. Back of the gown interesting, but again, would prefer to have it reveal a lovely well-formed back with some muscle tone rather than what little KB has going on. And from the side, the cut and drape of the gown do a girl the width of a playing card no favors.
Why isn’t this tagged as old for her age? This just screams grandmother of the bride.
It looks like MAGMA (pronounced a la Austin Powers)
Gown by Lillie Rubin from a 1970′s variety show.
This was my favourite of the night! I can’t believe you guys for even thinking of fugging it.
Prettiest dress all night.
Too big, waaaaay too long for her petite frame, but otherwise, beautiful on her, I think. Even her hair goes nicely with it. I wonder what shoes she wore with it. Who will ever know?
But then, when I look at that train thing, it almost wants me to take it all back, for that is totally un-neccessary. Superflouous. Eh, I’m gettting spell-checks for those words. What I mean to say is…it didn’t need that.
I love the dress by looking at the picture, but I am just worried if by looking any nearer, the blood lines might be clogged =P
in actual fact, her bling bling earrings and bracelets caught my eyes more than her dress LoL
I LOVE THE WHOLE ENSEMBLE!!! I don’t remember Kate ever looking better than she did at the Met Ball, EVER! I hope she’ll keep it up.
I like the dress itself, but it looks way too big for her. She looks like a little girl playing dress up in her mom’s dress. Maybe if we could see her feet it wouldn’t look so disproportionate?
I actually thought of the design as more of a sort of ocean coral than blood vessels, and I still do, thankfully. So I like it!
I’m not going to be mean – I actually kind of like the dress, at least on Kate. Her hair and makeup were lovely – but I’ve been resisting the urge to find her and offer her a nice sandwich. With mayo. And bacon. Please, Kate, just 5 pounds would make you look so much healthier.
she looks pretty, her hair looks nice, her makeup looks nice, the dress itself is not bad…..
….the color of & pattern on the dress look like the thin membrane covering the human brain. cos i am moving {never fun, always dreadful} i did look up the name of this structure, but didnt spend enough time to find it. i will leave that to someone less indisposed.
ps. oh no not lille rubin! lillie rubin would have FRINGE!
The dress is too big, but that might not be a bad thing. She actually looks healthy hidden beneath the all that fabric. I love her hair and makeup, but I don’t think it goes with the dress. The hair wants sleek and classic and the dress screams post-disco. I think Diana Ross could do this dress justice.
I think this would be okay without the train. Maybe not wonderful, but definitely better.

I know it’s horribly in the box of me to say so, but where are all these women’s feet? Ball gowns I’ll give a pass to, but the narrow gowns with no feet really have made these women look stumpy to me.
Don’t hate on modesty. it’s fab.
I think this dress is very beautiful but it is not good for a young woman. Someone who is over 50 would look so much better in it.
