When I got up this morning and opened my laptop, a notification from the Los Angeles Times floated across my screen. Pre-coffee, it appeared to say, “POPULAR MOVIE NOMINATION MAKES A MESS OF OSCAR NOMS.” And I was like, “wait, what? They said they weren’t going to do that category! Did they change their mind and not tell anyone?! WHAT HAPPENED THIS MORNING?” No, they didn’t, and nothing. (It was just an Op-Ed with a sort of misleading headline; the “popular movie” Oscar remains a theoretical dumb idea and these nominations are just as messy [or not] as ever.)
The big news from this morning’s nominations is that BRADLEY COOPER WAS SNUBBED (for Director; he still got a Best Actor nod, and was nominated for screenplay), as was Peter Farrelly’s Green Book direction (which is great news; leaving aside all the issues with Green Book, and his newly re-discovered habit of flapping his junk at women on sets, I also feel like people saw his bloviating speech at the Globes and thought, “ugh, forget it”), and many many dudes got nominated. Roma got a little more love than I thought it would (I was surprised by Marina de Tavria’s nomination; she took the slot occupied by Claire Foy at the Globes and that seems like the right swap), and The Battle of Buster Scruggs snuck in all over the place because you can never underestimate the Academy’s love for the Coen Brothers. I was also surprised to see Timotheé swapped out in the Best Supporting Actor category for Sam Elliott, except that Sam Elliott is allegedly great in A Star Is Born (I still haven’t gotten around to it; I know, I know, but I had a lot of personal stuff to deal with this summer) and also everyone loves Sam Elliott. The Favourite and Roma both lead the pack with ten nominations each. The real question, of course, is who is going to win in my family’s annual Oscar pool — my Dad is VERY tough competition and I have a tendency to pick the upset just for kicks.
