MTV Movie Awards Well Played: Kristen Stewart

well-played

Well, if you are a starlet in Hollywood who wants to wear a sparkly micro-mini, you will have to get to it through Kristen Stewart. She is a junkie for them. Finding this Balmain must have been like accidentally stealing someone’s pants and then — oops — discovering a bump of coke in them. Although that would obviously never happen in real life. The close-up of this dress is even cooler — kind of like Elizabeth Hurley’s iconic safety-pin gown, but without the cleavage, nor the desperation. She’s like a giant pincushion. Come see.

  1. Geemee

This might be the best I’ve ever seen her look, and it’s because of A) the smile, and B) the hair. The great, funky dress is a bonus. I’m so happy that she’s genuinely happy that I can even get past the peekaboo bra.

  2. Anna

    but the SHOES! Ack!

  3. Minutiae

I forget how pretty she is until I see pictures of her looking happy and friendly, like these. Then it’s like, “Whoa! She’s so cute!” I don’t love the shoes, but I can overlook them if she’ll keep smiling.

  4. k

OK, Geemee said it first — the peekaboo bra is a little odd. I even wondered at first if it was a design element, part of the dress. But the last picture convinced me that the dress just didn’t fit super well in the boobs. And that she needed to buy a lower-cut strapless bra.

  5. Mary

What a pretty girl. With a smile like that, it almost doesn’t matter what she wears. But for the record, I really like the dress.

  6. m

I’m not convinced that she *isn’t* actually yoinking her dress up in that last photo — I think that might be a bit of strapless bra we’re seeing in the previous shots?

  7. Peggy

I’m not a fan, but the dress is awesome, and that last shot is the most natural and lovely I’ve ever seen her look. Yeah, she’s yoinking up her dress in public, but she’s smiling and natural and for once doesn’t look like a surly mess. Perhaps her dress should be falling down more often.

  8. Danni

Aww, this is cute. Am willing to overlook the slightly boring shoes, and the fact that it is almost always a sparkly mini (just like Taylor Swift and the sparkly maxis) because she looks happy.

  9. TaraMisu

She looks fabulous! I knew she had it in her, well done KStew!

  10. Sneza

I love her, I’m a big fan, but I’d be really surprised if that’s all her own hair… it’s less than two years ago that she cut it off, and hair grows… how fast?

  11. Rachel

Supposedly she took the shoes off and was wearing Converse to accept her awards… which is… better?

  12. Carolina Girl

I know I’m going to be called insane and a buzz kill, but I don’t like this at all. Granted, a smile completely transforms her face and I’ll admit that she really is pretty, but this dress doesn’t suit her at all.
Whenever I see her, she looks like she’s so uncomfortable in her own skin. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen any movie she’s been in, but isn’t she supposed to be an actress? Can’t she ACT like she’s confident and comfortable? She always looks like a little girl whose been playing dress up with her older sister’s clothes.

But, she does get bonus points for not succumbing to the fake tan craze that has swept Hollywood. I like that her skin looks like skin.

  13. qwertygirl

You know, I actually LIKE the shoes with it. That dress has enough going on that if she wore “interesting” shoes too, it would just be too much, I think. This dress needed completely blah shoes that wouldn’t compete with it. And it’s fun! And she looks like she’s having fun! It’s something of a miracle.

  14. Bella

Don’t like it at all. Too much skin.

  15. Willow

I actually kind of like her after these photos! She seems like a barrel of laughs!

  16. Allyson

She looks great…I really WANT this dress!

@carolinagirl…you want her to “act” differently then who she is? Is that really sending a great message to America’s youth? She is an actress, she acts in movies, I bet she gets tired of it and wants to just be herself when she’s not working. Not to mention she’s all of what, 22? 23? She’s really really young. She’s probably still growing into herself. Some people take time to become confident.

  17. katie

i usually agree with you, but i HATE this. she is just such a mess; all her outfits looks like she’s just thrown them on. god, would it KILL her to style her hair?! and even her smile looks fake. her entire bored, too cool, i’m-so-misunderstood personality totally fugs this up for me. plus i am so sick of twilight i could die.

  18. Stefanie

It’s nice to see her looking like shes enjoying herself. (If shes not, her acting is better here than it is in Twilight.) And she looks cute.

  19. The Other Molly

    Holy Shit, SHE’S SMILING.
    And her hair looks clean.
Now all she needs to do is trade in the old lady pumps for something more youthful.
    She’s getting there.

  20. kiki

@katie where is this un-styled hair you speak of? her hair looks amazing. were you expecting a 1997 prom updo? I am genuinely confused about what type of hairstyle you would’ve paired with this dress.

Ps. I think this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. And the shoes are fine.

  21. Peachsiki

I’m so proud k-stew can smile (!!!) (remember when we all thought she had two facial expressions???) and has that little bit of nerdy-ness about her. Love the dress, had this been on her a few years ago it would probably be titled whitty about how she would look like the most depressed dominatrix rag doll. I wonder what she did with her shoes… I really hope they were awesome, and I hope she gets good roles in her future, like r-patz got Jacob in water for elephants.

  22. Aria

I like it. I just keep thinking though, that it must be uncomfortable to sit in.

  23. Helen

@Sneza Hair grows about half an inch a month, and she didn’t cut her hair all that short for The Runaways, it was just an odd style; it’s completely plausible that’s her own hair 2 years later.

  24. leslie

@katie her smile looks fake? omg i don’t know what is wrong with your life but this is cutest and the most genuine smile i’ve ever seen in my life. Yes i am not exaggerating , the kid looked great , happy she was glowing and it was great to see her like that. I really wish she would do that more often because it suits her so much.
She is growing into a wondeful woman , not an attention whore and this is refreshing in hollywood. .
I think You would never recognize a genuine smile even if it hit you in the face.

  25. TTbelle

    She’s probably just drunk.

  26. A

OMG. She’s smiling. How cute is she when she’s smiling? VERY CUTE.

  27. Jill

OMG her HAIR COLOUR. Amazing. I need to have my hair this colour! I keep asking my hair dresser for a reddish brown and he doesn’t get it. At least now I can use her picture and say: this is what I am talking about!

  28. Beth C.

I love this dress, I think it’s awesome and I think it suits her. I will say, though, there is something ever so slightly wonky about the proportions. I think if the skirt were just 1 or 2 inches longer it would be perfect. Also, beige bra, dear, and use a couple of those pins to keep the dress over it. That, or do it on purpose and fix it so a 1/4″ of the black bra shows all the time, the peek-a-boo thing makes it look like a mistake. But those are quibbles.

  29. Miss Tee

I’m just a little afraid I might see her va-joo-jee, so I’d like maybe 2 more inches on the skirt, but other than that, she looks great! Maybe she is finally coming to terms with the fact that her life is awesome and she gets to bang her super hot boyfriend all she wants so she should stop being so pissy all the time. Good on ya, Stews! (And believe me, I’m no fan, so it’s a big deal for me to compliment her)

God, I’d love to have that hair. I get so jealous of thick, dark, lucious hair since mine is stupid, flat, fine, thin and blondish.

  30. Cecily

Adorable! Love the smile, the dress, and the attitude. WIN

  31. KC

I say props to baby girl for wearing a strapless bra under the dress. How many wardrobe malfunctions would be avoided if the It Girls would wear, oh, I don’t know… foundation garments ?! Also, I wondered how heavy this dress must be. It’s probably a small miracle/large blessing that it stayed up at all. So, like, others have said: she’s clean, her hair is fantastic, and she’s smiling so it gets my vote.

  32. Susan

I love it. I’m not sure but the black edging at the top may be constructed that way.

The dress and the pictures are a win for me.

  33. Leigh

I love the dress. It seems very her.

My problem her is her inability to wear her shoes for an entire evening. I saw photos of her walking around backstage barefoot. That is not acceptable. You look clean for once honey please at least try to keep it that way. Besides you’re sitting on your bum for most of the evening. Those shoes can’t be that horrible.

  34. vandalfan

I’m glad to see her smiling for a change, but her strapless miniskirt thing is tedious, and she got off on the wrong foot with me due to her inability to act on the red carpet. Her film work can speak for itself (ahem) but she seemed like a snotty, sulky brat at publicity events.

  35. Chasmosaur

Great dress. Mild points off for the peekaboo bra – I’m thinking that initial fittings may not have taken into account her walking around in something that is probably fairly weighed down with all the detail. And I have no problem with the plain shoes – the dress and her face take precedence here – simple shoes are the only way to go with something like this.

My favorite dress on her, though, is still this one. If she had last night’s hair (instead of growing-out Runaways hair) it would have been even better.

  36. Spacelamb

I HATE that dress. It’s just a shapeless, extra long boob-tube covered in safety pins. If it was any shorter we’d be looking for the stirrups. It’s so fug I’m actually wondering if Heather discovered that aforementioned “bump” before she wrote this.

  37. una

The dress is just ok. But then she had to put on vans shoes during the show! I didnt even know she was wearing heels earlier. She is such an awkward person, not sure she is cut out for celebrity life. Good luck girl!

  38. Edel

Ah, I have such a soft spot for KStew. You see that look on her face? That is a look of someone who sees the end of Twilight fast approaching. It does wonders. She looks relaxed. Also that dress is great. And hair. And make up. Well done lady!

  39. Jill

Ummm… the safety pin dress is not keeping itself in place- you can see her bra in at lest two of these pics. And her shoes suck. The dress is awesome, but she ALWAYS wears this and so it loses it’s wow factor for me. I believe this is what we’re supposed to call a “Style Rut.”

  40. simpleme

    Wow, you (& she) turned me from a h8r to a ♥r of K-stew. Well done. I’m so shocked, I’m writing like a twi-hard.

  41. CJ

The pretty older sister from Zathura is back! Love love love the smile. Wow, this is the prettiest and most relaxed I’ve ever seen her look at an event. Though Runaways was kind of generic and boring, she did an INCREDIBLY spot-on Joan Jett and I gained a lot of respect for her as an actress, even if the hair was no fun to grow out. Not sold on the shoes here, but she looks great in the dress and the smile is spectacular.

  42. Carolina Girl

@Allyson … Yes. I want her to act differently. She’s an ACTRESS. No one pays her enormous sums of money to be herself.
She normally comes off as miserable and desperate to be any place other than where she is. And if that’s the case, she should just get on with. If she’s going to insist on being an actress and in the public eye she should at least pretend that she’s somewhat happy to recieve the attention that she has obviously sought. Otherwise she should leave Hollywood and do dinner theater.
And I get that she is VERY young. But Kristen Stewart is no amateur — she’s been at this a long time. If she hasn’t come to terms with being photographed on the red carpet by this stage of her career, she never will. To paraphrase Joan Crawford, “Any woman who wants to be a star has to look like a star.”
I have no issue with celebrities who look pissy and sulky when snapped going to the grocery store or dropping their kids at school first thing in the morning. But I do take issue with entitled starlets who show up at events, whose sole purpose is to generate publicity for themselves and enhance their marketability for future projects, and act as if it is an imposition for them to be there.
And, quite frankly, I think the only reason this look got a Well Played in the first place was because, by acting like a snotty sulky brat at other events (**description cribbed from vandalfan), she has set the bar so low that an actual smile seemed like a miracle.

  43. Sooz

Mmm, lots of strong feelings toward and about the KStew as well as her ensemble. Well, be that as it may, I’ve seen some other pics of the dress that show the black edge at the bottom of the dress as well as at the top of the bust construction. I suspect it is a lineing or slip to keep the safety pin and stud metal to a minimum of discomfort on young skin. Personally, I think she looks very cool in this, appropriate for the venue, and the smile is lovely. She started as a 17 year old back at the beginniing of Twi-time and is growing into a woman. Who among us was perfect in our own non-entity world at the time, let alone becoming insanely famous when all you want to scream at the world, “But you don’t Under-Stand!!!” She’s figuring it out. But, I’m a student counselor for a living and recognize the type…

  44. Jessica

Just a gentle reminder to please be civil to one another here in the comments: you can all disagree about K Stew without getting too worked up. (This isn’t directed at any of you specifically, just a general guideline, please.)

  45. Katja Stubbe

Wow, there is a lot of emotion going on about K. Does it really really matter that she hardly ever smiles … she doesn’t have to. Her face is pretty enough without one.
    Also, awesome dress!

  46. Sajorina

    Kristen:

You look good! Your dress rocks! Now, go give your MTV Movie Award for Best Female Performance to someone who deserves it!

    Thank you!

    Me

  47. Sajorina

People, please don’t get me wrong, I like Kristen and I loved her performance in “Adventureland”, I just think that she didn’t deserve the award for “Twilight: Eclipse”, that’s all!

  48. EAG46

Like every mother tells her daughter, “You’re so much prettier when you smile.” It’s true here too. Now that dress wouldn’t work for me, but on HER it’s cute.

  49. exquisite red

I love it! She looks so pretty and happy. I can’t fault her for the bra thing – haven’t we all had some outfit that just didn’t have the lasting power that we thought it would, before we wore it around all evening? But we wanted to wear it anyway because it was just that awesome? Better a little hint of black bra than nip slip. At least she IS wearing undergarments!

  50. Lina

This is refreshingly cute! The safety pins, rhinestones, and steel studs work surprisingly well from a distance — I mean, you’d think it was sequins and fringey bits or something — and she rocks the color. It’s nice to see a different attitude presentation, too, since that sort of attitude-image goes so far in terms of what parts you get invited to read for. I hope this helps lead her to some completely new and different roles.

  51. Molly

So am I the only one who noticed that she was BAKED at the awards? Girl couldn’t stand still, and kept getting all stupid and giggly. You try walking up to the stage, toasted, a billion times in heels; I bet it sucks, but I have issue with her sneaker change. Flip flops, flats, ANYTHING ELSE. But her hair is cute, and I love the Balmain.

  52. katie

I’ll admit I have a strong aversion to her…so that colors everything. She DRIVES ME INSANE!

This is one of her better looks, and appropriate for the event. She actually looks semi-happy in some of these pics, so that’s quite a change. But, when watching the awards, she seemed to be her old self – refusing to smile, totally awkward. I just don’t get her.

Not a fan of the strapless bra sticking out or the shoes in these pics. But they’re better than the Vans checkerboard loafer sneakers she was wearing during the entire MTV Awards!

  53. Reece

@ Sooz Just one factual correction. She started at 9 yrs old in her first movie with Jodie Foster called Panic Room. She has been in the business a long time.
IMO, if Twilight had been her first movie, her first job, her first carpet experience then yeah sure I prob would still have been saying “She’s young….”, etc, but after I found that out. I more towards “I’m over it. Grow up. it’s your job.” Things like MTV is business not personal. She can’t deal then she needs to go. Or take a break and be 21 away from the spotlight.
    On to the fashion.
I agree. The dress is fabulous! However it is the same thing she wears all the time. The same cut. All the time! It’s the same hair. All the time! It’s the SAME makeup. ALL THE TIME!!! She needs to fire her stylist.

  54. Amarie

I kinda dig kstew…really liked her in Adventureland. I kinda admire her for being herself and not falling into the cookie-cutter mold of Hollywood and trying sooo hard (hello Blake Lively). I think she’s one of those people you either like or you don’t. but seriously she looks great here. I wouldn’t have changed shoes until after the show but I also don’t get to make out with rpattz on screen so she wins! :)

  55. lisa

No one ever mentions that this kid has the best legs in the business.

  56. Sooz

I still say, from dealing with teenagers as a counselor for 20 years, that being one is much more difficult than being a 9 year old, @Reece. I realize she started as a child in movies. Then, as well all do, transitioned to teenager. Entire different ballgame once the hormones kick in.

Gorgeous girl, growing up in the spotlight. She gets my vote on the look at the awards and my empathy for her gawkwardness.

  57. steen

My gosh, I didn’t realize how many GFY posters personally knew this woman. Kidding: I presume nothing about her personality and can only comment on her clothing, which I find awesome. I wish more dressmakers were as adventurous as this. I love, love, love seeing unexpected materials used in couture. That’s why the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met was one of my favs, and that’s why I love this dress–especially when paired with her enviable legs.

  58. athena

lol!!!shes so cute when she smiles…love that dress on.its different and edgy, just like her..she does rock minis, doesnt she??

  59. molly t.

You’d be happy too if your bf was Robert Pattinson and you two just reunited after being separated (he’s in toronto filming, she’s doing prep work for SWATH in London) She’s a gorgeous girl with killer legs, amazing hair, beautiful eyes, slim physique, etc. I think she is a breath of fresh air in a sea of fake Hollywood starlets. No one rocks a mini like she does! So what if she slips into her Vans after doing the red carpet? I love her carefree, devil-may-care attitude!

  60. A.J.

OMG! KStew! You’re pretty! See what not looking miserable constantly does?

  61. dizzy

She is a pretty girl, but this dress is not doing it for me. It has so much going on.
