This looks PERFECT on her, and, not surprisingly, seems to be in line with the way she dresses in real life – there’s something beautifully simple about the line of this dress that reminds me how lovely she looks in her sleek going-to-the-theater outfits. The color is perfect for her, and her hair and makeup are fantastic. And see how nice non-nude lipstick can be?
The less said about the other outfit, the better….
i find it boring. not bad, but .. meh
but the make up and hair are gorgeous
I second that. I am surprised people like it so much. Bland on TV, and a big yawn for me.
Completely agree. Meh. I think people are calling it a victory because it wasn’t a massive fail.
I’m amazed with how interesting the dresses have been in the award season up to now that Chastain, Lawrence, and Hathaway all dropped the ball on the biggest night. Nothing worth writing home about.
I mean…when Stacy Keibler is featured on a best-dressed list over nominees?! Whoa.
This was one of the blandest red carpets on record. With a few exceptions, it was tedious sea of beige. A year without stylists would be a huge improvement. Sadly, it won’t happen.
boring boring boring boring coma
She looked soooo amazing! Definitely my best dressed of the night!
http://www.hsquaredfashion.com/
At last, someone who knows how to wear (and style) a neutral colored, strapless gown. She does red lips properly. The whole nude lip thing going on last night made me want to take a red marker to the TV screen.
I agree that she was the best dressed of the night. Her gown did absolutely everything a gown can do for a gal – flattered her figure, looked great at a distance and close up, and it was a color that nobody else could wear.
The red lipstick saved the whole look from being monochromatic, her entire look was perfect!
My best dressed of the night two years in a row! Girl knows how to pull it out on Oscars day.
Her head looks amazing. I like bronze, but this is a bit pale for me. If it had been the blue of Reese Witherspoon’s dress I’d be drooling all over these photos. As it is, it’s very pretty, but just a hair short of Fab for me.
Perfection. She reminded me of Rita Hayworth. The dress color complimented her skin and hair so well, but was not overpowering, allowing her beauty to stand out.
Her face and lipstick and hair are so very good.
I wish her stylist could convince her to wear colors more often, though. The dress is very pretty, but I think I’m over the nude-blush-pink-blah trend this year.
Face, make up, jewellery, beautiful. Dress, perfect fit. But it’s so boring. If it were a colour it’d be amazing. Any colour would be better.
Normally I wouldn’t like such a like color on a pale complexion but the fabric has a darker undertone that works for me. Thank you Jessica for setting the bar. Gorgeous.
This dress doesn’t translate to photos well – the color looked so much richer on television last night. That’s the danger of shimmery fabrics like this: stunning live, blah on film.
Agree–I was a little meh about it until I saw it on TV. I still wish it were a deeper bronze, but she definitely look great.
The color was beautiful, and definately not a blah-nothing-skintone, as some here are suggesting.
Eye, meet beholder; Beholder, meet eye.
She looked amazing! Definitely one of the best of the night for me.
I think this might be the best she’s ever looked. Finally.
Exquisite! The bodice was well fitted, the bronze dress/lip color/hair color were totally in delicious harmony. I’m straight, but Jason who?
This is not working for me. I’m so happy she looks good above the neck, but the dress is a snooze. The fit is divine, though. I wish she’d worn color, at least some deep jewel tone earrings. If she’d worn green earrings and bracelet with that gown, I would be dying.
I love the fit and the style, but I HATE the color. If she was wearing it in that gorgeous blue she had on the other day, it would have been perfect.
I must be one of the few who said…. meh. I think the color washes her out and zzzzzzzzzz
blah.
Her hair is to die for though!
Didn’t anyone think that she added a bunch of unnecessary extensions to her hair? Her hair is already pretty, and a nice length, I thought the extensions were a bit ridiculous.
Beautiful hair, perfect, strong-enough makeup ,the dress was a lovely fit and style – but ultimately it was boring. Beige is blah, especially on someone so fair. As you said about Lawrence’s dress, if you can’t bring it, go home.
Still, she looked a thousand times better than she usually does on red carpets, so that’s something. Maybe next time she’ll learn to punch it up a bit.
Jessica Rabbit! And that’s meant as a compliment.
She looked great – very modern Veronica Lake. I do think though that this night was a see of non-colors. And while this is a bronze it’s still very close to darker nudes – and I think it’s super pretty, but I probably won’t remember it in a couple months.
I wish ih had really been BRONZE; just any bolder color.
I am grateful for the bracelet shot, because it shows that it actually is a color, and that it is a pretty color. I’m still not 100% though, because the color didn’t really photograph as the color that it appears to have been. And really, if Cher Horowitz can prepare for such things, shouldn’t the Oscar Red Carpet waltzers?
She does look really really pretty but Im just not wow’ed. Maybe if it had been a bolder shade of the color it is? I dont know. I guess Im just hard to please.
I wish she had the Oscar to accessorise with it
Oscar dress was classic pretty-dress. The last one was hilarious! It was Mother Of the Bride Who Once Did Dinner Theatre As Velma In Chicago, And Don’t You Forget It.
She’s one of my favorites. Super stunning! Her hair is to die for and makeup and light accessories were the way to go.
She and Damian Lewis are single-handedly bringing back redheads in Hollywood!
i love this!! i think she looks perfect, and i adore this bronze color… i think with the sequins, if this had been any different color, the dress would’ve felt pageant-y to me, but the bronze kept it sophisticated and gorgeous. well played!!
Regarding neutrals and dress color, somehow I don’t think of this bronze dress as a blah choice for her. The bronze is definitely a nod to her red hair color and looks really good with her skin tone. It stands out in a way it would not on others in that regard. The hair, the lip, the dress, combination is fantastic in the way it dances around the color palette here: colors with very different shades of redness/rustiness. I really think it is quite brilliant and that someone thought very carefully about how the parts of the look, accessories included, were combined to enhance the entire look without taking away from any individual part of it. Extremely well done!
I was completely underwhelmed by this. It looks nice, but I’m not wowed. And she is not dating that guy. I just read somewhere that she is dating someone who is not in the biz. I think he’s in fashion. Don’t remember his name though.
Absolute perfection, and wonder of wonders, someone finally got her brows just right! She is so beautiful, and seeing her look this terrific is a sheer delight.
But also, ChanelWHAT. It’s got to be one of theirs, right? I guess it’s no longer a truism that you can never go wrong in Chanel…
Its Armani Prive.
That actually kind of explains it, thanks.
Although nothing explains why she wore it!
I have to agree with you on the brows. Whoever did that pencil, did it just right.
(in response to Helen)
And the shaping and grooming are flawless, too. Brow wrangling has so often been an issue on her lovely face, it’s really great to see the whole thing come together like this! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
On who she’s dating: it’s some fashion exec I’ve never heard of, Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo. She said she’d never go for someone in the same industry as she is.
I think Jason Clarke is so talented, though, and hot besides. It’s a shame the controversy, centered mostly in his role, meant that his face was nowhere in that best picture trailer.
On fashion: she seriously knocked it out of the park.
I love this and I LOVE her. Hopefully we’ll see her at many more Oscar ceremonies to come.
I thought of you guys when I saw this last night and was all – “They’ll be so HAPPY.”
As was I!
I thought just the opposite! I actually said to the TV, “Oh no!” I thought it washed her out and wasn’t fitted that well from waist to hip. Oh well, guess that’s why I’m not a fashion commentator except in the comments section of a blog…
Love the dress, and am really appreciating these close-ups because that fabric reads differently in close-up and it is gorgeous.
Her jewels are all vintage Harry Winston – that’s why they’re so fabulous.
At first I disappointed that she chose a nude gown, but when I saw that it was a slightly deeper copper color I was more on board. This fits perfectly and looks gorgeous– her hair and makeup are perfect too. She looks beautiful.
I thought it was beautiful, but if it were emerald or royal blue, I would have been elated.
Wow, she’s like a red-headed Veronica Lake here, and the beading on that dress is unbelievable!!! I love this whole look. A-mazing.
Imagine how fab Amy Adams dress would have been if it was this colour. Jessica looks stunning, the fit, the style, the colour, the accessories, perfect.
Was there a ban against color or something last night? YAWN….
I so did not see the last slide coming.
At least we now know she plays at a very chique tennisclub.
I thought she looked GREAT at a distance, but didn’t like the dress close up. Her hair and makeup were gorgeous though.
For her, YES! Her makeup is flawless, finally. She found eyebrows, and lipstick. MAKEUP y’all.
I also found her likable with The Seacrest. Her bracelet is one I would steal. Her dress fits perfectly, though I may have wanted it to be another color. The detail makes up for that though, or at least that’s what I’m telling myself.
Also, can we discuss how her grandmother looks so young? My grandmothers, may they R.I.P., never looked that young.
Make it a deeper copper color and then it would be to die for. She should always wear bold colors.
The subtlety of the almost-non-color made her gorgeous hair the main event. Her lipstick choice was perfect, and the eyebrows are getting better and are darn near there.
LOVE!!! This is PERFECTION! Hair, makeup, skin & jewelry are FLAWLESS! And that dress is EVERYTHING! My absolute favorite of the night, two years in a row! Well Played, Chastain… You win at life! FAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking strictly from the ‘guy’s brainstem’ perspective, I thought she looked awesome from head to toe.
I think on many other actresses, the dress would have felt blah to me, but Jessica Chastain looks good understated. I think it fits better with her own style, given what I’ve seen of her outside of red carpets.
I was also thrilled to see the red lip! I’m about as pale as her (the Irish winter curse ;-;), and I love using the contrast of a good red against my skin to make a statement. On a night when most of the make up artists went neutral with their clients, I liked that Chastain was one of the few sporting a bold lip.
bland to the point of ugly. no color, no surprise, no dash, sass or style. Does nothing for her. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
This is just so boring.
Wow! The first-ever Scroll-through fug! Love the Oscars dress. Laughed out loud at the last slide.
It’s a beautiful dress objectively, but I wish that it had been in a color. A pale color, yes, but a color. The copper is nude-adjacent and it didn’t work for me. There I said it…
The cut fit her, but this color is just a big no-go for me.
Slide #5: forget the bling, she has arm freckles! Well and truly in girl crush now.
Hated this. Hated it hated it hated it. Not the worst dressed, but definitely in the middle of the pack. I don’t get the love.
Gorgeous dress and she is gorgeous a well.
I see beautifully balanced perfection.
This was probably my favorite of the night. She looked so Old Hollywood, from the Veronica Lake Hair and the make up. The dress was even warmer of tone and bronzier on screen than it looks in these flash photographs, and really looked amazing on her.
I love, love, love this on her. Perfect. Her hair i’m not so wild about. For me she is in the top three if not the top dress of the evening. Why? because it fits her beautifully and everything about it makes Jessica look beautiful. The dress isn’t wearing her, she is wearing the dress and they both are very very happy with each other.
Disagree about the fit. Are those wrinkles I see across her tummy? And the positioning of her boobs is … odd. But her hair and makeup are divine.
