SAG Awards Well Played, Melissa McCarthy

well-played

I’d like to just say that while I had some issues with Bridesmaids – namely that a lot of the stuff Kristen Wiig’s character did was totally jerky and selfish — NONE of them were with Melissa McCarthy here, who was so freaking great in that movie. Just hilarious and totally without vanity and awesome. In fact, I think the scene where she drives over to Wiig’s house and tells her to GET A GRIP and stop being such an asshole actually saved that movie. She was the quintessential Get-a-Grip Friend, and she deserves her accolades. Which is why I am stoked that I think she looks the best she’s looked all awards season.

As a non-fashion related side note, I get what you’re saying about Bridesmaids, BUT that is a real thing that happens to a lot of people with these types of life changes, and movies should reflect those kinds of truths. At least they were able to tell that story in a funny and touching way.

    • Jessica

Totally. But I just thought that no one I actually know would take their behavior to the extreme that Wiig did. People FEEL that way, and I get it, but she REALLY made her friends’ wedding All About Her in a way I thought was off-putting (and looking at it from the POV of a hostess, her behavior often made me rage-y). Which is why I thought having Melissa M’s character TELL HER THAT was a stroke of genius in the script — that never happens in these things.

I liked the movie — I’d give it a solid B+ — but I thought a surprising number of characters in it were a-holes, is all.

      • Andrea

I concur, while Bridesmaids was funny (though not as funny as I’d hoped) I liked Wiig’s character the least and I loved that she finally got TOLD. The whole movie I just wanted Roy from The IT Crowd to run away with me instead.

Also, as a side note when I was a small child I wanted to be renamed Vivian in honour of a character from the seminal Aussie soap Home and Away and that is why I now love Melissa McCarthy even more.

      • susie

I think the whole POINT of the movie was that Wiig’s character was selfish and jerky, and that’s why her life was so miserable. It just all came to the surface with her friend’s wedding.

…Which I think is a brilliant step forward from the classic chick flick theme, in which What’s Wrong With The Main Female Character is usually that she’s The Clutzy One, or is Ugly Except When She Takes Her Glasses Off, or Focuses Too Hard on Her Career.

Wiig’s character is much more realistic, and in my (perhaps twisted) opinion, a little more feminist-friendly. It’s only when she gets her ass into gear (without the All-Knowing Guidance of a man) that good things start happening to her.

      • megan

agree with you heather 100% although funny at times I wanted to punch kirsten wiggs character in the face – can you be that insecure? & selfish – suck it up!!! everyone goes through tough times your bf is happy & getting married, its not about you!!!! haha rant over!!

  2. Willow

my main problem with Bridesmaids is the fact that everyone I know who talks about it seems to think that the only “OH MY GOD SO FUNNY!” scene is the one where Melissa McCarthy pooped in the sink, it makes me sad that “the best female lead comedy film in years” is remembered mostly for a poop joke.

Or am I the only person that has had these problems?

Melissa looks great though, and I love those 3 together.

    • Willow

      THOSE 2! THOSE 2 TOGETHER!

      *Should have gone to Specsavers*

    • Jessica

THIS ALSO. I really am not into poop jokes. The part where Wiig is trying to hold it together and sweat is just running off her face, I thought, was WAY funnier than the poop in the sink.

      • Fiona

Totes McGotes. I also loved the pale-and-sweaty aftermath.

(I felt the same way about Charlotte’s poo scene in SATC1. I was shocked that made the final cut)

    • Jasmine

See, everyone that I talk too has the OMG so funny scene of when Melissa McCarthy drove along side her with the puppies in the car. I’m going to start laughing just thinking about it.

    • Kit

I don’t even remember that scene and I LOVED Bridesmaids!

    • Aj

I hated pretty much every second of the movie — but especially the scene where the jerky and apparently completely unprofessional and incompetent Wiig character goes off on a younger and prettier female customer, referring to her by my least favorite insulting term for a woman. Yup — that’s what Apatow & Co. think is female comedy.

      • Katharine

Yep, me too. I found it… interesting, in the “ohhh, INNNNteresting” way, that the movie was all about us WATCHING the main character slide deeper into the mud of her nadir, and that was what we were supposed to find funny; contrast that to comedy about men, in which the main character STARTS at rock bottom, and the funny is about him redeeming himself — albeit through unconventional and often contentious ways.

But no. Watching a woman humiliate herself, step by agonising step, is HIGH-LARIOUS, you betcha.

      • Faye

Aj and Katharine, I think you are my lost sisters. I finally just saw the movie after hearing everyone rave about it for months, and I *hated* it for the reasons you said. I thought its portrayal of women was so incredibly offensive, and it had basically no plot. The only good part (besides cute Roy from The IT Crowd) was Melissa McCarthy, and of course they had to have the requisite fat-girl jokes for her (not to mention that disgusting pooping in the sink scene, which was completely unfunny and completely . . . well, disgusting is the only word I can think of).

On topic, though, I liked Melissa in this dress. It’s the most flattering thing she’s worn all season.

    • megs283

In the vein of the poop thing… I love Melissa McCarthy and was slightly annoyed that the “fat girl” was the one who had no style in Bridesmaids. She looks so pretty on Mike & Molly and it bummed me out that Bridesmaids made her so…. blurg. Every other girl got to look pretty… why not her?

(and I get that her “no-nonsense” character wouldn’t have worked in a cute outfit, but still….)

  3. E

Whatwhat. I didn’t know she was married to the “Air Marshal”!!!

    She’s so pretty…

  4. Halo

Wow, she looks like a million bucks. I always think she’s pretty, but her dresses have tended toward the heavy and matronly end of the spectrum. As a fellow plus-sized woman, it makes me crazy, because there are many beautiful styles for all kinds of bodies. Melissa McCarthy seems to like sleeves, which is fine, and she finally found a long-sleeved dress that looks great. Her makeup and hair are excellent here and really highlight her gorgeous eyes. Well played, indeed!

  5. jesse

She is always hilarious. Loved her on Gilmore girls.

  6. Teleute

Wow, she looks fan-freaking-tastic! Gorgeous dress and hair. My only tweak would be to give her a touch of lipstick – her lips are getting a bit lost with that lighting.

  7. na

I couldn’t believe all the ridiculous fapping about how bridesmaids should have been nominated for an Oscar. No.

  8. Stefanie

    She looks great.

I had to Google the reference to SHAUN WHITE HOODIES AND DENIM, but after doing that I’m convinced he matched his bow tie to Shaun White’s snowboarding pants last night at the X Games. (Why yes, I did watch the X Games rather than the SAG awards/carpet. I fail as a GFY lover.)

    • Jessica

I SO WISH that were true; closer inspection shows that Shaun White was wearing white leopard print and Hoodies N. Denim is wearing a houndstooth. But I kind of just want to pretend your theory is right because AWESOME.

      • Stefanie

I noticed that too when I looked at the high res photo but I’m sticking with it. After all, Im sure houndstooth was much easier to get this hands on when he finally did see what pants Shaun had chosen.

        SHAUN WHITE HOODIES AND BOWTIES.

  9. TieDye64

For me Bridesmaids was completely overrated, and I completely agree Kristin Wiig’s character did some pretty ridiculously selfish things. Melissa McCarthy absolutely MADE the movie. I’m so glad she’s getting the well-deserved accolades.

She’s looking pretty damn good here.

DENIM SHAUN WHITE HOODIES AND DENIM; love you guys!

  10. Charlotte

I usually hate these awards ceremonies, but when I heard that MM was nominated, it made me want to watch. Finally a performance and a character that I could get behind; that seemed deserving.
The dress is still not as fab as I would hope for, but the rest of her is so polished. She’s lovely.

    • teekay

I have a similar reaction to this dress: I find it really underwhelming, albeit much more appealing than the one she wore at the Globes. I’m really hoping her oscar dress is a stunner. Anyway, her hair and makeup here are lovely and overall she looks very pretty.

  11. Sajorina

I also love that she’s married to SHAUN WHITE HOODIES & DENIM! They’re both hilarious! I think that Sookie (she’ll always be Sookie St. James to me) looks the best she has ever looked here! The color is great, her hair & makeup are flawless! And, I love the sparkle in the dress, the clutch & the jewelry! She’s so pretty!!!

  12. Carl

Most of the marketing for Bridesmaids seemed to be, “Now women are doing those disgusting things men do!” Well, I don’t watch those movies either (Hangover, Apatow…anything), so that’s not a great reason to watch.

I love Melissa McCarthy’s humor on these awards shows (the beauty pageant lineup at the Emmys was the only good part) but never seem to be able to watch any of her movies or shows.

I like the color and I like her bag. The only recommendation I would have made is less eyeshadow.

  13. SJ

Sorry to hijack Sookie St. James thread to talk about Bridesmaids, but I will because you brought it up in the first place. I agree that she [K.Wigg's character] did overreact and did end up being quite the A-hole, but I think it sort of worked for the movie. Mainly because Sookie did call her out on it, which almost never happens and because K.Wigg’s character’s life was legitimately going pretty awfully, which also almost never happens in Rom-coms [Most rom-com lead characters have great jobs, great outfits, great apartments, great friends, but think their lives suck because they don't have a great man...yet]. Realistically, It”s hard to see your friend’s lives going great when yours is going backwards…even when you want to be happy for your friends it’s tough not to be upset at the same time. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a comedy [especially a chick flick] address that as well as Bridesmaids.

Sorry for rant. I agree that Bridesmaids was overrated [ie, not at all an Oscar movie] but I’m glad that it exists and think it’s unfair that poop and swears are the things that people seem to focus on.

Also, Melissa looks great here and she and Air Marshal are adorbs together.

    • Andrea

ITA that Bridesmaids did blast the usual rom-com trope of great job/life/friends (which I didn’t even realise existed until you brought it up!) but I had big issues with the fact that just because Wiig’s character’s life was going awfully she felt she had the right to be a butthead to her friends who weren’t doing it as tough. That’s never ok and that selfishness got to me by the end.

  14. Kimberli

She is really so pretty. I’d sworn off dresses completely because they do not flatter me, but maybe I need to look into that style. It might distract people from the fact that I have no waist.

    • Teleute

The cowl neck and draping are great for your kind of shape, Kimberli. Igigi.com does a great job of suggesting styles for different body types, and you can search by body type to find things that are recommended for your shape.

      • Kimberli

Thanks for the recommendation! My style right now is basically so sedate that no one ever sees me, so it might be nice to look like a sex bomb for once. Or maybe even just a pretty 30-year old. :-)

  15. Lina

This is a million times better than her usual. I only wish it didn’t have dolman sleeves. Still, she’s working it.

  16. Michelle

Aww, just when I could not love MM more, I find out she’s married to DENIM! (I personally prefer the “Converse One Star Shu-hues” part. Well, you know what I mean.)

Ahem, on topic. I feel like I would have liked this better without the chest-area draping and a shorter sleeve to show off an awesome bracelet. All in all though, love!

  17. TaraMisu

Ok I am SO glad I’m not the only person who thought while Bridesmaids was chuckle-worthy funny, it was not laugh out loud funny. Also agree on the poop in the sink scene….

With that said, Melissa looks DIVINE! And I had no idea she was married to SHAUN WHITE HOODIES!

  18. Gine

She looks great! Probably my favorite dress of hers.

I totally get what people are saying about Wiig’s character in Bridesmaids, but I actually liked her BECAUSE she was kind of a jerk and a loser. It seems like women in comedies always have to be these perfect, Type-A sorts whose only faults are being “quirky” or clumsy. It was refreshing to see a female character act like an actual person.

    • cpro

That is a great color on MM, she looks fab and I always love that dimple of hers. Referencing an earlier comment, I liked that they DIDN’T try to make her character “pretty” in the movie–why shouldn’t it be cool for someone to not conform with all that BS if they’re not feeling it?

Totally agree with Gine on KW’s character. She felt very real to me and I empathized with her, because women’s friendships can be REALLY competitive, and it’s tough when you’re comparing yourself to your besties and coming up short, and on top of that feeling guilty and lame for being envious. Capital “s” Shame Spiral!

The scene that made me laugh the hardest is when KW had a meltdown and totally acted out at the shower. Who hasn’t felt like that, if they’re being honest?

  19. Sandra

    1. The sleeves have to go. They may be replaced with other sleeves, but these are not flattering.

    2. While I too love me some navy blue, I’d really like to see her in another rich color. The blue gets a little same-y after awhile.

    3. I think Pic #3 hair is more attractive than Pic #1 hair. I prefer something a little more formal to go with evening-wear.

    4. I am very relieved that a closer inspection shows that what I thought at first might be slippers made of Cookie Monster are in fact just folds of the floor-length dress with the lighting making them look a different blue.

  20. vandalfan

Love the color, but the sleeves need a change. These look like dolmen sleeves, which don’t flatter anyone. In my humble opinion. Her makeup is perfect, and I also learned yesterday she was married to the secret Air Marshall. How delightful!

  21. yeahandalso

I liked Bridesmaids a lot, but I think Melissa’s best work was in the very little seen, but excellent movie The Nines. Her best friend wrote it for her and Ryan Reynolds and Hope Davis are in it, all three of them play three roles and they are excellent at all of them. They even have Melissa and Ryan as a married couple in one of the segments and I totally bought them as a couple.

    • Sajorina

I’ve got to see that movie ASAP!

      • Softwear

It was a little weird. I love Hope Davis and Melissa looks HOT in that movie but…it was just a little weird.

  22. Cleo

Why praise her for her “sarong” and down Octavia for hers? Color choice/fit much better, agreed.

  23. Anne B

This was far and away my favorite look of the night.

I love that color, but it’s not about the color. It’s about a flattering gown in a plus size on a very pretty woman.

Fab fab fab FAB, for days. <3

  24. megan

    cute couple!

  25. Infoqueen

Girlfriend needs a better foundation garment; other than that, she looks lovely.

  26. GingerLover

Sorry Folks, I agree with vandalfan et al. that the Dohlman sleeves must go, but frankly I think the dress should follow it. I love a beautiful woman who looks happy regardless of weight, but this dress is doing her no favours whatsoever. It’s shrouding her figure, not celebrating it.
    She can do better.

  27. Arlene

You like this but fugged Octavia? Hmmm, me thinks not. And I love Melissa.

  28. Amber

LOVE Melissa McCarthy and she looks great here. Beautiful.
I thought Bridesmaids was hilarious and I thought the poop jokes were funny. I’m like a 12 year old boy, what can I say? I do agree about Wiig’s character–she had very few redeeming qualities and so it was totally unrealistic to me that people wanted to be friends with her and that any guy would want to date her.

  29. Mahastee

I love this color on her, and the style is a vast improvement on her recent outings, but I still think she can do so much better. I’d start with a different style of sleeve and a *small* shoulder pad to square things out a bit.

But still, SO much better than the bland-o sacks she’s been trotting out lately, and I love her hair and makeup.

  30. APH

She is GORGEOUS! And a fabulous comedienne. Seeing photos of her looking beautiful and happy makes me smile. Go, Melissa!

  31. lori

I like this dress so much more now that I know it isn’t black.

  32. ameliaa

bridesmaids was the funniest movie and melissa McCarthy made it soooo funny she is absolutelyy gorgeouss and shes an amazing acress :)
