SAG Awards: Well Played, Nicole Kidman

well-played

Something about Nicole Kidman registers as so … rigid. Perhaps it is that she is rigid. But seriously, there’s a tightness: Often her hair is yanked back, or even when it’s not, it feels like her face has been, or she’s squeezed into something sleek and standing with her shoulders hunched and acting shy, barely smiling. There’s a closed-off air about her. I don’t know. I can’t put my fingers on the word. But I do know which words do NOT evoke her image, and they are “relaxed” and “funky.” Which is why this was so refreshing to me:

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Nicole Kidman this flowy and fun. It’s kind of a nutty dress, but she nailed the accessories, and the flowing, wavy red hair is a perfect note for her head-suit to hit. The REGULAR Nicole Kidman, I want to ask if she’s freezing and hand her a coat and a stiff drink. This one, I want to invite back to my house and then fire up the grill while we have beers and talk about Tom Cruise and what Scientology brunches are like. And this Nicole Kidman would totally come. If, you know, she weren’t famous, and busy, and probably freaked out at the idea of eating barbecued food at a stranger’s house.
