Saoirse Ronan is sixteen.
Rachel Weisz will be 40 this year:
Call me crazy, but I feel like maybe they should have traded outfits. What say ye, Fug Nation? (Don’t answer that part about how I may or may not be crazy. I know what you would say.)

Comments (193):
I LOVE Rachel, but she’s totally too old for that dress.
I think they both look great! Rachel may have looked more “age appropriate” in the gold dress but I feel like that would have been just more of what we always see her in! Good for her for taking the risk! She can totally pull it off!
I think maybe Saoirse’s just needs to be shorter? I like it THEORETICALLY.
It looks like something I would have worn when I was 16, and then looked at years later with disgust. Maybe she’s just normal/modest?
I don’t like the gold dress at all and hate the shoes with it, so wouldn’t want to see them on Rachel, who looks amazing. I say keep Rachel as she is and fug Saoirse!
No way. Rachel’s dress is fantastic. On her. Saoirse is learning – she’ll get there.
Rachel Weisz will be 40 this year … WOW! Seriously?
I love the ruffly blue dress, she looks great. I can’t say they should trade.
Maybe if Saoirse’s dress were in blue also. She has lovely eyes, & is looking very washed out right there. Not liking the peep-toe, high heel, bowling shoes though. bleh
I think Rachel looks AWESOME. You definitely would have fugged her had she worn that first outfit and you know it.

They should keep the same dresses, but switch the fabrics. Rachel in gold jacquard or whatever that is, Saoirse in filmy blue, with different shoes. And 6 inches shorter all the way around.
How come Rachel is 3 years older than I am but looks 10 years younger? I’ll have what she’s having, garcon.
Rachel looks great. It’s Saoirse that looks dowdy. But I wish Rachel had worn her hair in a clean, pulled back up-do. The messy hair conflicts with the neck detail.
I think, Rachel totally rocks that dress. The girl, on the other hand, should ditch those horrible creations stuck to her feet and wear something shorter and cuter.
Rachel may be dressed a *bit* young, but since she looks so gorgeous (at 40) can you really blame her for indulging? NO!
As for Saoirse (pronunciation guide, anyone?), YES, the shoes with the toe creep and beige and lacing are fug. However, even if Rachel was wearing that outfit with some delicate champaigne strappy heels, the dress would still look mature and boxy. Let’s put it on Judy Dench, and spare the young’uns!
Rachel Weisz is lovely and charming and her dress is WAY too short, her fabulous figure notwithstanding. Saoirse’s problem (other than her name, which is both unspellable and unpronouncable without some kind of Internet guidance) is not her dress: it is her shoes. WHAT is going on with her SHOES?
Step 1: Ditch the beige number.
Step 2: Rachel, give that blue frilly thing to Saoirse – it’ll really bring out the girl’s eyes.
Step 3: Now, Ms. Weisz, go forth to seek and find a frock that’s longer at both ends, nixes the ruffles, and proves that you’ve still got it. Preferably in hunter green. You’re particularly a vision in that color.
the first outfits kinda just overall meh, but she’s 16, at least its not skanky, it looks yeah, like something i would have chosen at 16 and then wondered what i was possibly thinking the next year, but rachel looks nice yup yup
Rachel looks super excited to be going to her 13th birthday party. Saoirse…. how do you pronounce that? Sour eyes? Who gives a kid a name like that? Is it one of those supposed-to-be-Irish names?
Sorry. I can’t even remember what she was wearing.
My only issue is with Saoirse’s shoes.
LOVE Rachel’s dress. If she loans it to Saoirse (not saying she should, as she looks awesome in it, but IF), it would be amazing, especially with those blue eyes. Not loving Saoirse’s outfit, so maybe Rachel’s stylist has another option she can use if she loans the blue one out, but more than anything, I am hating those shoes. Not only are they ugly, they look like they’re about a size and a half too small, making the poor girl look like she’s got hobbit feet exploding out of them.
I think the shoulders and the shoes on Saiorse’s outfit are matronizing her…change the cut to sleeveless/strapless, and ditch those shoes for a pointy black stiletto or something, and she could be modest but not mom.
Rachel has never looked prettier! Perfectly age-appropriate. Seer-she’s alright.
You failed to fug THOSE SHOES? Those THREE-TOED, TRANSPARENT MESH, Ladye-of-ye-olden-dancehalle-meets-pugilist-workout-shoes? For SHAAAAAAAAME!
p.s. Yes, switch the dresses.
*pronunciation guide as requested*
Saoirse: The Irish word for freedom
Phonetic pronunciation: Sear (as in fear) – sha. Can also be pronounced sir-sha.
(!)
Barbara Lee, she IS Irish.
(And, as I recall from when she was nominated for an Oscar a few years ago, her name is pronounced Sheer-sa.)
Saoirse’s outfit is dreadful. Who let hear wear those shoes? They remind me(shoes) of the ‘coverings’ ice-skaters wear over their skates to make them not look like skates and more like fancy shoes. I hate the whole ensemble.
Rachel at least looks like she’s alive and having some fun.
Rachel has never looked prettier! Perfectly age-appropriate. Seer-she’s alright.
The more I look at Saoirse’s dress… the more I like it. Except that it looks too stiff. Otherwise, I think the gold color is absolutely lovely on her, and the overall shape of the dress is good. Oh, and the shoes are gross. She needs to find a dumpster for those.
And if Rachel’s dress was a little longer, (to the tops of her knees, perhaps?) I would be all for it. But it’s definitely too short for her age.
Rachel gets to wear anything she wants, which I doubt would ever involve that dress Saoirse is wearing. It’s not hideous, but it’s certainly drab. Actually, my grandmother had a bedspread made of that precise fabric. I’m not even kidding. It’s uncanny!
Indeed! I love me some Rachel Weisz but I got a little shocker after the jump. Beautiful dress, but I agree with Kate up there, perhaps longer would work? And yes, Saoirse needs to young it up! And those shoes are hideous.
I’m not loving the gold at all really, but maybe that’s because it is totally inappropriate on a teenager. But you’re so right about Rachel – she needs to hand that dress over immediately.
Lay off Sairose. She’s a very serious young lady, and I don’t mind that. For me, the shoes save the dress from being too ‘Nan at her 40th wedding anniversary’.
And Rachel Weisz would look good in a lolly wrapper. Which she’s sort of wearing.
Forget the gold dress: if I had feet that ugly I would wear boots.
Rachel works it. Coming forty is not old.
Haven’t you ever heard the term “cougar?”
Cougars are usually great people – still have flash, energy, have got some wisdom finally, have fun putting themselves forward.
Yes, I think they should swap, actually, as it would be more age appropriate and also the blue would look great with Saoirse’s eyes/skin. Plus, Saoirse looks so creepily like Evan Rachel Wood to me in that picture that I’m half expecting Brian Warner to jump out of nowhere and make her over in the image of Dita Von Teese.
Rachel just looks wrong. Even if they did swap, though, I think Saoirse should lengthen the blue dress a bit.
Bad, ugly shoes. Dresses OK. God knows others have worn worse (see Ling, Bai and Price, Phoebe)
Yes. Definitely swap, except for those horrible shoes.
No one under the age of 80 should be wearing the first dress. Rachel looks amazing!
If Saorise’s skirt was shorter and the dress had a drop waist instead, it could be cute. And she needs to ditch those awful equestrian peep toe booties. Also, different color. That gold washes her out.
But yeah, she would look much better in Rachel Weisz’s dress. Rachel looks great in it though, but a few extra inches added to the hem wouldn’t go amiss. Just to make it knee-length.
Rachel Weisz looks AMAZING here… so she shouldn’t be asked to swap! Don’t think there’s unfugging to be done to Saoirse, the dress/shoe combo is just BAD.
how about a scrolldown fug for the amazing looking Susan Sarandon?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/08/susan-sarandon-brings-son_n_384534.html
Definitely trade. Rachel’s dress color would be gorgeous with Saoirse’s eyes, and vice versa re: Saoirse’s dress color with Rachel’s hair. I’m hoping that Saoirse’s dress would lay/fit better on someone with an adult body (i.e. some semblance of curves) but there is possibly some adjustment to be done to make it fit better. It just looks too droopy.
I also hate Saoirse’s shoes. Slap some gold strappy sandals on ‘er.
Saoirse’s shoes help. The cut of the dress in general is bad, so it wouldn’t even be a good choice for Rachel, who looks fabulous.
Sure, trade, why not? God that kid’s eyes are blue.
I think Rachel is adorable, but the dress needs to be just a bit longer.
I kind of like the gold dress on Sairose. She seems a bit of an old soul to me. And it’s not like she’s wearing a huge bag or anything. It is fitted, but nicely.
I think they both look fabulous. I like that she’s trying to do something a little different, and not dressing like a cupcake as so many sixteen year old actresses do.
I like dress #1 – it has an old timey feel, especially with her hair up in bun but with a bit out, like the dust is moving across the land as Saoirse and her oakie family move west to find work and a better life. The shoes are god awful.
Rachel’s grinning like she got into her mom’s make-up drawer and picked the brightest lipstick she could find and now mom has found her, “Look at me! Aren’t I pretty?” The dress is best for someone 25 or younger, I’m afraid.
I would say trade. Rachel’s skin would look awesome with that gold color, but the cut’s a bit bland. I’m in agreement with another poster here, I think Saoirse’s dress would look better on the 80 and up crowd. Dame Judi Dench could rock that dress. I appreciate that Saoirse doesn’t have something cut to her navel, the dress is wrong for her. Everything down to the sleeves seem WAY too matronly for 16.
Rachel’s dress is fun, but too short to be flattering
I don’t mind the dress choices at all – I can see a 16 year old wanting to wear something ‘grown up’ to an event, and I don’t think it makes her look lost in mom’s closet.
But BURN THE SHOES!
Those orthopaedic booties should not exist, and definitely not in flesh tones.
The gold color looks great with Saoirse’s blue eyes and fair skin tone. The dress should be a little shorter and not have the shoulder cape things. The top of the dress doesn’t fit as well as it could. I think if the dress’s neckline was reworked for her body it wouldn’t look as old. Rachel looks great. It’s a little borderline age innappropriate, but she pulls it off pretty well. I wish I could see the shoes, if they are booties I will fug the whole thing.
It’s SEER-shah, basically. Yes, she’s Irish – and it would probably be considered age-appropriate (i.e. not too short, unlike Rachel Weisz) for a formal public occasion. She’s also a very dignified young woman in general, not given to the trashy display stuff. But she does look a bit washed out. Rachel Weisz looks like Organza Pirouette Barbie in that. Yuck.
Just saw Weisz’s dress on E Fashion Police, and it doesn’t look nearly as good on her as it does here. I say a trade could work, as long as Weisz ditches those ugly shoes Ronan is wearing and makes sure the dress is fit properly.
I don’t know. I love the way Saoirse looks. She’s different and she just looks so very cool to me. I wouldn’t want to see that dress on her because I really hate seeing it on Rachel! Ick. It’s just too silly, don’t you think?
Saoirse Ronan looks like me when I was eight and wearing my grandma’s old cocktail dresses from the 1970s. Good times.
Rachel looks awesome. Maybe not age appropriate, but who cares.
I’m sorry, I only see WEISZ.
rachel is so hot she can wear whatever she wants. truefacts.
I really want to give Saoirse the lead role of young would-be indie fashion icon in Not Without My Culottes: The Chloe Sevigny Story.
The resemblance is kind of freaky! Both physically and in avant-garde yet dowdy fashion choices (though Saoirse’s hair is lovely and not yet unkempt, and I think her dress could be fixed with a few inches off the hemline and a less stodgy fabric).
Those shoes Saoirse is wearing look like they could have been prescribed by a podiatrist (except the high heel part), and she probably should go home and get off her feet so she doesn’t do permanent damage.
Yes. Switch for sure.
I need to see the full outfit for Rachel Weisz. It may totally work. From this angle, they should swap, but NO ONE should wear the shoes Saoirse has on. Fugalicious.
Am I crazy? I think Rachel looks cute. *shrugs*
The younger should take lessons from the older. When you dress up to go out, DRESS UP. Looking good rarely involves droopy, shapeless satin. It’s more about ruffles, cute shoes and showing your knees.
Saoirse means “freedom” or “liberty” and somebody needs to liberate that child from that outfit. The blue of Rachel’s dress would go perfectly with her eyes. Burn the dress and shoes Miss Ronan’s wearing, give her Rachel’s dress and give Rachel something else entirely. I can’t imagine anybody looking good in that gold thing.
I love the first dress. I think it would look wonderful with different shoes on RW. The blue dress is fine. Too frilly for me, but I wouldn’t say it’s fug.
Trading clothes is a brilliant idea for these two.
they can’t get it right all the time but the Rachel pic is abit mutton done up as lamb. the youngun may not have all her bits out and look amazing but at least she doesn’t have all her bits out and looks normal. i think it’s wrong to judge the young ones anyway. we’re all banging on about new images of body and feeling good about yourself and then you take to them when they’re clearly working out their style and their bodies. save it for nicole et al who are all mutton and know how to defend themselves.
This Sour-ise person needs to go back to her attic, and return, maybe years from now,
with enough sophistication to be able to pull off the look she’s trying for, and failing miserably at, here.
Bad dress, bad shoes, sad hair, and please, enough, already!
Whatever she might have done to merit anyone’s attention, she has lost mine utterly.
Rachel face looks great, but she has the same affliction as Brooke Shields-
I am ‘youthful’ looking, so I can still ‘be’ young.
Nope. Hair is too long.
I agree with you , but not in exchanging dresses.
Rachel, some sophistication, please!
At 40, one would assume there is some degree of that, no?
Both dresses look cheap.
Trade the dresses. Burn Saorise’s shoes in the Hell from whence they came. Because seriously, I don’t know – booties anger me, but peep-toe booties anger me MORE.
To be honest, though, they don’t look THAT bad, to be perfectly honest. I think Rachel’s makeup is a bit heavy for that look (though maybe it’s because she’s caught mid-smile), and I’m not QUITE feeling the hair for whatever reason, but she looks mostly fun and she has the legs to pull the dress off. Saorise, aside from the heinous shoes, looks…kind of like what Mary-Kate (or was it Ashley?) wants to look like. It’s a HINT matronly, but it looks more chic than Derelicte.
And I can almost look past the shoes. I probably wore fuglier when I was 16. And I’m a guy. (Actually, I definitely wore fuglier. Four words: White marching band shoes.)
Ok, first off, Saoirse is pronounced Sear- Sha. And I think she looks stunning, except for the hideous shoes- who even makes shoes that gross? Yeah, maybe the dress could be a little shorter, but at least she’s not some underage super skank, *cough cough* Miley Cyrus.
Rachel also looks aMAZING! Though I’d still be interested to see them swap dresses because I imagine they could both equally rock the other outfit.
I don’t know about that unfortunate 16 year old dressed like Marion the Librarian.
But I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rachel Weisz and I don’t care if she’s getting Social Security benefits, she is ADORABLE and she looks like a million bucks in that dress.
Saoirse’s SHOES!
at first i thought they were t-bar, gladiator type heels. but no. they are booties!!!
*goldfish mouth movements*
ah, go for it rachel i say. 40 being the new 30 and all. and i do love that dress.
rachel would rock the hell out of the gold number… and would never wear those shoes with it. so i say trade and give the frilly number to the youngin.
I’ve wanted to name the little girl I don’t have Saoirse for a long time now. Now that there’s a famous person with a unique Gaelic name I like, does that mean I have to ditch it because it will become trendy?
Other than that, the dress Saoirse is wearing is not very fab on her, mostly fug. Tough to tell if a better clothes hanger would make me like it more. Mostly, I’m just depressed that a 16 year old is wearing something that zzzzzzzzz….. oh I’m sorry, I fell asleep. What was I saying?
I support gorgeous women wearing interesting, yet flirty and fun dresses that scream “woohoo! I look awesome, and I’m completely pulling this off! Don’t hate!” From the side shot, she looks great. Hard to tell otherwise. Dress would probably also look good on Saoirse with her blue eyes that shine through even with that gold dress on, but the gold one is too dowdy for someone as gorg as Rachel.
So, no trade. Rachel fab, Saoirse, unfortunately fug.
nobody should wear that golden dress…
“too old” for a 39 hot lady like rachel?
c’mon guys, you too funny.
You guys, for Fug madness there should totally be a category for fuggy shoes and accessories.
Those shoes are unbelievable! someone actually designed, produced and got someone to wear them (let’s hope not actually – bought them – pray Jesus!)
Dowdy dress (and awful shoes) on the very talented Saoirse, but I’ll take that any day over the skeezy outfits that so famous teens many wear. Nice to see someone who’s underage that isn’t shopping her bits all over town for public consumption (Miley et al., I’m looking at you.
As for Rachel, she looks great but at the same time a bit silly. Is that possible? A couple more inches on the hem and a more streamlined skirt, and she would look both great and age-appropriate.

I’m not sure trading is the answer.
Saoirse looks pretty all right. It’s kinda refreshing to see a young girl choosing NOT to put all the meat and potatoes on display, so mad props to her for that. There’s nothing wrong with a retro look, but hem it up a bit so it flatters the wearer. Only other issue is that it strays into “My clothing is the color of my skin” territory, so maybe a bit stronger gold, or a bit pinker, or something like that.
The shoes – not even going there.
As for the beauteous Rachel, much as I love her, and acknowledge that her dress looks fun and flirty, I think it is a BIT short for anyone at any age, and making it a dignified length would only improve it.
And can someone explain to me what the strapless bodice that stands away from the body thing is all about? Cuz, peeps, I’m flummoxed on that one.
Rachel can rock pretty much anything, and while she certainly doesn’t look bad in this dress (and even looks good), I don’t think she looks as jaw droppingly amazing as she can.
That may also be because I’ve seen the full length pics of her including shoes, which puts the dress even more firmly into junior prom territory. yick.
http://justjared.buzznet.com/2009/12/08/rachel-weisz-premieres-the-lovely-bones/
either way Saiorse’s shoes have GOT TO GO
Uh, Saoirse’s ensemble looks like it belongs on the old lady who threw the blue diamond overboard at the end of Titanic. Not Rachel Weiss.
The funny thing is, I think if Rachel’s dress were the color of Saoirse’s, I might see it as slightly more age-appropriate. That said, Rachel looks fabber than I will on the best day of my life; even if her dress is a little young, I’d wear it if I could!
I’m sure Saoirse is struggling with wanting to look older and be taken seriously. Wish she would have more fun w/her clothes, though! She is lovely!
Rachel’s dress is fab with her in it, but I agree a softer updo would be a better choice for her hair. And soften that makeup puh-leeze! The brows and the lips. Softer brow, and delete the waxy Jungle Red lips, replace with a softer more natural tinted lip gloss. She’s got the verve and moxie that match the dress, while Saoirse seems well-matched to her quieter attire. So no switch. But no deity in this world or any other could possibly permit those shoes on that poor child, especially with the subtle tones in the dress. So please for the love of God give her some strappy champagne sandals, well constructed, not of the FM persuasion, and shorten the dress a few inches, and it might not hurt to give her a slightly more party-ish updo. Amen.
Rachel looks incredible, is incredible, can wear what she wants, the end. Saoirse’s dress doesn’t fit, size-wise or age-wise, and her shoes are ten kinds of wrong.
the gold dress and shoes are both fugly. the dress looks like something i could find at a crappy “vintage” store. rachael looks gorgeous, but yeah, i guess it looks a bit too young. i’m 8 years and 5 months away from being her age and i hate the idea that someone will think i’m too old for what i’m wearing! i wear what i want!
i think young girls like to dress to look older and vis versa. They both look nice. The shoes are a bit much, but she will get the hang of it.

They could trade, and both would look fine. But, I also think that they could both stay in what they are wearing. The youngun’s dress is actually quite lovely. It wouldn’t hurt to shorten it a bit, but what I think really contributes to the dowdy factor is the shoes. A more modern shoe would have made the outfit a winner.
Rachel, NO. That is a dress for a middle school junior formal, not one a nearly-40-year-old serious actress should wear. I’m amazed at how many people here are defending this choice – I guess the prevailing opinion is that 40 is the New 14 (which is why there are new photos of Jacqueline Wildenstein running around in skintight jeans – apparently she thinks 70 is the New 25). I don’t think she should wear Saorise’s dress either, and neither should Saorise (it’s ugly). Both of them need honest stylists ASAP.
I actually thing Saoirse looks rather charming, although I would like to see that dress above the knee. Rachel looks good, too, although I agree- I would switch their outfits, perhaps.
No matter what, though, those orthotic booties from hell have got to go.
Well! I just don’t know what you young people are going on about! I think that young lady looks absolutely delightful!
Sincerely,
Marion the Librarian.
PS. I have VIEWS about women who dress like that…person in blue. –MTL
I think Saoirse’s dress is fine; kinda vintage, although I think a deeper/brighter color would have looked better (royal blue, magenta). The shoes are hideous, though. Switch the color, trade the hideous shoes for some cute peep-toe pumps, add a cute vintage bag, and I’d love it!
I think Rachel’s dress is okay for her age, although maybe longer would be better. Make the skirt longer, maybe an updo instead of the loose hair…
no one should be wearing the gold dress. they could both wear rachel weisz’z dress and be equally age appropriate. 40 is not the age of death just yet…
no one should be wearing the gold dress. they could both wear rachel weisz’z dress and be equally age appropriate. 40 is not the age of death just yet…
Put Rachel’s dress on Saoirse, give Rachel something more age-appropriate, and burn Saoirse’s gold potato sack and ugly shoes. I’m all for rockin’ a look if you look good, but Rachel? That dress? Seriously? Fritanga’s comment is spot on.
I think Rachel looks great and youthful, irregardless of what age she is….I am not sure about Saoirse though….
A trade would be perfect. Straight across the board.
Well, in general, yes, they should have traded, tho I’m not a huge fan of either dress, honestly. I do love the color of Rachel’s on her. Saoirse’s, I just don’t really care for at all. Maybe if Rachel’s fit her better and was longer…
The gold dress, loosely draped to allow plenty of oxygen, will work nicely as a firestarter to burn those peep-toe shoes. The blue pouf would complement the Irish teen’s eyes, but she has too much poise to wear something so frothy. (She is one of the few actresses I’ve seen who knows how to PULL [YOUR] SHOULDERS BACK.) As for Weitz, I say fug. Unless you’re a cigarette girl in the saloon on the Good Ship Lollipop, this dress is inappropriate. Alas, when one nears forty, it is time to stop wearing band-name t-shirts, time to stop smoking in public, and time to strive for chic, elegance, or both, rather than girly whimsy.
No! They should not trade! You should be grateful that there’s a sixteen year old out there who’s not slipping the nip or showing all of her goods to the paparazzi.
I love the blue dress – the color is gorgeous on Rachel, however IT IS TOO YOUNG FOR HER. If it were a little longer maybe. The Blue one would also look beautiful on Saoirse. The gold one needs to go back to Golden Girls stat. It reminds me of like a remake of little women set in today’s ‘racy’ times with those sleevlettes and paired with the atrocious peep-toed granny boots (did I seriously just type peep-toed granny boots?) Also, the material reminds me of brocade sofas. ew.
God, I don’t really care. I mostly agree with the let them trade outfits crowd, definitely with the get rid of Saoirse’s shoes gang, but my bigger concern is Saoirse’s eye makeup. She’s freaking me out with that zombie-eyed look! I embiggened the photo and it’s clear that her eyes are lovely but the heavy makeup is turning them into something out of Harry Potter.
The shoes on Saoirse should be banned from Planet Earth. Seriously.
I think Saoirse (I can’t help but think of that chick in Willow)is wearing a pretty and understated dress her mom picked out. I hate the shoes too, if mom chose those then that might be considered child abuse. I’d rather see her in ballerina flats, I’d rather see her in anything else really.
Rachel looks good, if her lipstick is too bright, eh. I would be tempted to flick peanuts down that bodice but overall she looks good.
saoirse just needs to lose the shoes. i’m delighted that she’s not dressed like a skanky 16-year-old!!
and i hope that when i’m 40, i can still dress fun and youthful! rachel looks radiant
Somebody with bigger boobs needs to wear the gold dress (and with different shoes, for pete’s sake!)…the sleeves are kind of overpowering, as it is. I’m being overly critical, though…she really does look nice, overall.
I’m more worried about Rachel’s makeup than her dress, personally. I like the dress…sure it’s short, but she looks good in it, and the color is great on her (well, if the lipstick didn’t clash with it, that is). The blue is kind of soft and subdued and helps it look more mature (for example, if this was pink? No deal).
They both look awesome. That’s all.
Honestly, I don’t think I would have given Rachel’s dress a second thought if it hadn’t been juxtaposed with Saoirse’s. Did I spell that right? What kind of name is Saoirse?
40 isn’t old, people! It’s only old for those who are deathly afraid of becoming that age!
Rachel looks awesome in this picture!! Way to rock the cute dress and red lips. She looks vivacious and youthful, but not like she’s trying too hard.
I remember being 16 and wanting to look grown up and sophisticated. It can take a long time to figure out what works, and to be comfortable working it. (Hey, I’m 30 and still working on it!) That said, Saoirse’s eyes are amazing (and terrifying) in this photo. They are such an intense aqua! (Are there pupils in there somewhere? Please, please tell me there are.) Even though the color of the dress washes her out, I think it does successfully play up her eyes… Otherwise it’s all fug to me.
I think they both look great but I would change Saoirse’s shoes and make Rachel’s dress a bit longer. Not that the dress looks bad, I just always think minis should be a little bit longer.
I absolutly hate the shoes of saoirse! I think she doesn’t likes it that much either. It doesn’t fit the outfit. But then again, what does? I do kinda like the statement-sleeves, they remind me of the crazy outfitts that RiRi likes so much. The rest reminds me of Celine Dion in ‘my heart will go on’. I do hope that this fug dress wont go on.
I have an irritational love for the dress that Rachel Weisz is wearing. It looks so flowy and cute. So what if girlfriend is almost 40? She works it, and she works it well!
My advice? Go shoppin with Rachel, Saoirse. And give the crowd an actual happy-smile! Nobody can pull of that facial exprescion, except Helen Mirren.. maybe..
Rachel Weisz looks gorgeous, and certainly vibrant and exuberant enough to carry off the dress.
One factor you may not be taking into consideration here is that given Sairose’s role in her movie, and that movie’s overall subject, a ruffly party dress would not have been appropriate.
Sairose: She’s 16??!!! Really? Yikes. OK, first of all, that color is horrific on anyone with her skin tone. She looks washed out. I don’t think that even a bit more make up could have helped because she’s got “I just finished scrubbing the bathtub” hair on top of everything else. The dress itself, whatever the color, looks like an old person’s drapes. The shoes? Awful? This is the ugliest style of shoe ever created, and I am pretty sure that it wouldn’t even look good on a horse with a foot injury.
Rachel: Sure, she’s 40, but she looks amazing, and that is an adorable dress. I have no complaints there. While the look is a bit young, when comparing these two photos, she actually looks more youthful than poor Sairose.
I think if the longer bit were taken off the back of Saiorse’s dress and it were deep red, it’d be great. The color would do wonders for her eyes and her skintone. The shoes…I hate.
Rachel’s dress is fun, but perhaps a few inches longer? She is, after all, almost 40. And maybe an up-do of some sort, because her hair + the dresses neckline is a bit busy.
Wow. Trade.
And then trade Rachel’s again for something less slightly-flesh colored and frumpy.
Barbara Lee. I don’t think it’s one of those supposed-to-be-Irish names. I think it’s Irish.
Both fug outfits, no possible recovery.
Btw, just because a name is not known in North America it doesn’t mean that it’s a makey-uppy name. There are tons of traditional Irish names are very popular in Ireland but obviously not familiar to non-Irish people, but it’s rude to react all incredulous to them. I couldn’t imagine coming across, say, a Japanese or an Indian name I’d never seen before and going “OMG, stoopid name, is that even real?!!!1!!”.

In theory, Rachel Weiss is too old for that dress. But in practice, she looks HOT!!
I think Saoirse deserves mad props for dressing with elegance, class, and taste, unlike so many starlets her age. I do think the dress could be a little shorter and still be appropriate, and I don’t like her choice of shoe– something strappy would have been better. But I think she looks beautiful, and the color and detail is wonderful!
I think we can all agree that Rachel Weisz is gorgeous…but at 40, she shouldn’t be wearing something so short. She looks like she’s trying to crash a high school homecoming dance.
If Rachel had been styled differently with that dress – maybe not the long hair like someone off The Hills, and different makeup – she could do it without looking too twee. Right now she’s walking a fine line which I attribute to the fact that I love her.
As for Saiorse (does anyone else look at her name and wonder if they’re actually pronouncing it correctly? I have self doubts) if we lost the sleeves and made it a little shorter I think it would look great. Right now it’s almost like a costume from a Great Gatsby-era period piece, kwim?
SWITCH please.
I’d say trade, but not sure I would like that gold number (and hideous shoes) on Rachel either. And while I don’t think 40 means one can’t wear short dresses (if you’ve still got the legs for it; see: Jennifer Aniston), my problem is the ruffliness of it. Looks a bit twee esp. on 40 year old.
Saiorse – is SEER-SHA – is Gaelic for freedom. Not made up at all.

You used to see it written on toilets in the Bogside circa. 1982. And also – the newsletter for Sinn Fein (Shin Fayne). Take from that what you will.
Both outfits suck.

THANK YOU for this. Seriously, how ignorant are all of you people ragging on her name? Just because it’s not Brittany or Tiffany or Barbara Jean doesn’t mean it’s a weird/made-up name.
Also, I think Saiorse looks gorgeous and like that she went a different route than most teens would go. Rachel looks great in that colour but the cut is a little too cupcake for a 39-year-old. No, 39 is not OLD, but it’s not young, either!
I think the young girl could be in something less serious, but I love seeing Rachel in fun dresses. Otherwise she does seem over-serious, though appropriate, sometimes, much like Kate Winslet.
I think this entire post brings up an interesting issue: You’re 16, you’re at an, what is this a premiere?, event. What do you wear? Not too slutty, not too matronly. Also, did I mention that you’re 16? I remember the hell that was choosing a prom dress – and yes, I looked ridiculous.
Oh, and Rachel Weisz looks amazing. From the sliver of thigh visible in that pic, I say she can do whatever she wants! Almost 40?!
Fug the 16 year old…Kudos to Rachael! She looks amazing!
Is it just me, or is Saoirse looking a wee bit like Evan Rachel Woods? Thankfully, she hasn’t slapped on the makeup too heavily, but the whole feel of the outfit is heading down that path, for me.
However, I get the reason for the dress. She’s taken a lot of flack because of the movie’s very mature content, and she wants to look like she can handle it without needing therapy or ending up like LiLo. So, I’m okay with the concept, but in execution, meh. Ditch the clod-hoppers that are obviously torturing her poor little tootsies, make the dress all one length and change the color to something that pops a bit more, and I’m in.
As super cute as Rachel’s dress is, I actually think she’s the one out of place considering the content of the film. Maybe if it were just a bit longer?
The problem here is not one of age. Saoirse’s dress is simply dowdy and unflattering, no matter the age of the wearer. I think she would look great on Rachel’s dress but then again so does Rachel, who is toally rocking that flirty and fun and light-hearted dress.
yeah they could have traded outfits but then Rachel wouldn’t look as fantastic as she does in this blue number – i don’t think Saoirse has the oomph to pull off this flirty blue slice of cake
Saoirse is making the classic “all vintage = good” mistake, it is a mistake that led me to purchase Geri Halliwell’s solo effort Schizophonic last week. Like the dress, this was flat, dull and disappointing.
Rachel looks fantastic but a little Sweet Valley High. Personally I think she should give me the dress.
I’m still repressing Saoirse’s shoes. A classic case of OH HONEY NO.
Those shoes are just so wrong.
Wait, so Rachel, 40, too old for her dress, but SJP, 44, just about to perform at a piano bar? Seriously???
Saoirse is rocking that dress like nobody’s business. (But sweet God, the shoes- NO.) Every 16-year-old likes trying to look a little older sometimes, and at least she’s doing it classy.
HAHA Just realised Saoirse is wearing Susan Boyle’s Britain’s Got Talent audition dress.
First, as a general comment: Snide comments about people’s names, or your lack of familiarity with their body of work, ***do not make you look extra cool.** They make you look bitchy, and not smart enough to use google, and basically worth ignoring.
THAT SAID: Saoirse Ronan is maybe a year or so young for that dress, assuming she’s not going to be hipless all her life; it’s cut with an adult female body in mind, and her coltishness is not well served by the extra fabric with no hips to support it. Maybe Rachel Weisz would look better in it than she does, but I am not the woman to criticise Ms. Weisz’s choice in cloting ever, because she always looks better than is humanly possible.
Those shoes look like fancy high-heeled ace bandage wraps! They remind me of Diane Kruger’s high-heeled foot cast in Inglourious Basterds.
Okay, I’m not totally crazy about Saoirse’s dress, but she’s 16 and not showing her innards to the world so I’ll take it. Rachel, your dress is way too short. Cute, though.
I don’t care whether they switch dresses as long as Saoirse’s shoes are burned in ritual sacrifice to the fug gods.
they both need to go home and change *didn’t someone tell Rachel that you dont wear mini skirts after 35 years of age unless you work as a Cocktail hostess and plan on dating Tiger Woods( oops did I let the cat out of the bag again? mybad)
Rachel: no harm, no foul if you can’t tell how old she is. I thought you were kidding when you said she was almost 40. She looks fab. Anybody saying anything different is just green with envy.
That other chick: never put that dress on ANYONE, no matter what age. Burn it.
Trade! Trade! TRADE.
YES! That’s exactly what I thought when I first saw the pictures today. Wrong person wearing the wrong dresses.
I like Saoirse’s dress but with reservations. It would look better if it was one length and without the shoes. Which are godawful. Rule of thumb: if your shoes have laces then they may not be the best thing to go with a dress. Maybe a sandal, as was previously suggested but a contrasting colour? Otherwise, I think it’s rather unusual and pretty. And Rachel Weisz is rocking that dress like it is no one’s business. If I could look a fraction that good now, never mind at forty…
Saoirse looks about 30 but I think it’s the hair moreso than the dress. Her shoes, while possibly cute with another outfit, have nothing to do with this dress. Rachel is working it in her dress, and more power to her if she is pushing 40, she looks fantastic. I see others saying her dress is too short. Jealous biotches. Now, if she LOOKED over 40, I’d agree.
So what Rachel’s wearing is actually considered a dress? Not a kitchen curtain wrapped around her waist with a sash?
Ach! My eyes! forget the nasty shoes: those feet…..they are a crime against nature! Please remove her photo and do not repeat such. It makes me all empty and cold inside.
That woman in the blue dress: all-right!!!
Clooney would hit that!
Any hetero guy from 20 on up would hit it!
And that woman ain’t just surface fluff I would bet!
I agree with everyone who said that as long as you still look the part, you can get away with wearing (almost) anything you want. And Rachel obviuosly looks amazing, I usually don’t like pale colours on pale people, but on her it works somehow, maybe because of the red lippy.
As for Saoirse, she’s still so young, I won’t bash her for any red carpet blunders, she’ll learn.
Rachel is mutton dressed as lamb here, so sorry. Give second dress to first girl. Burn first dress.
Miss Ronan’s entire look is wrong and fug, and I would never, ever do that to the divine Ms. Weisz. I kind of like the dress on RW, but, yes, it would be better on SR.
Whoever made the shoes on Saoirse Ronan’s feet needs to be taken out back and shot, because they obviously have an advanced case of rabies.
rachel looks amazing in that dress.
the young lady needs a stylist.
I’m sorry, but Rachel Weisz looks insanely hot in that dress. If I looked like that woman, at any age, I would totally wear a dress like that.
And yes, Saoirse needs a stylist…stat.
I LOVE Rachel Weisz! She looks so fresh and gorgeous in that dress! She should not have swapped- only because she rocks her look. Saoirse Ronan just needs a little help.
They both should have worn the blue dress. Rachel looks great in it, 40 or no. Seahorse probably would have looked good in it too. Burn the shoes from the first pic.
she is only 16 good on her for not wearing something that you can see what she ate for breakfast in, and who cares if rachel weisz is wearing something “not age appropriate” she looks hot
Rachel’s dress looks amazing. But she should have put more effort into her hair.
Rachel looks awesome (although that color would have looked great on Saoirse).
But Saoirse looks shapeless, shoulderless, and flat-chested in that dress. I like it in theory, I just think it needs to be better tailored. Plus, those shoes are SOOOOO UGLY.
That girls toes are seriously fucked up.
I don’t like to say “She’s too old to wear that” unless she LOOKS too old to wear that. If she has the body for it, I don’t like to complain. It’s a cute dress. I don’t know if it’s appropriate for a red carpet, but cute nonetheless. I really hate whatever the younger girl is wearing though.
Meh to all options; both outfits are not amazing/not terrible, neither would be vastly improved by being on the other person.
Rachel may be 40 this year, but she does not look 40. I think that dress looks great on her. If she’s comfortable enough to wear it, I’m okay with it.
That child has the fugliest toes on earth. So for that alone Rach wins. She’s cute. As for the youngin: She needs to wear T-straps or something. Cover those things.
Good evening. A fine quotation is a diamond on the finger of a man of wit, and a pebble in the hand of a fool. Help me! I find sites on the topic: Effexor xr night sweats side effects. I found only this – effexor for anxiety. It’s the one disorder we had thus characterized on me ten reactions then, effexor. Effexor, its psychotherapy people and cast reversible ingredients have laid it a free great mayonnaise around the brain. THX , Rane from Togo.
Saoirse’s dress is stunning but they generally both look great. And I can’t believe Rachel is 40, she looks like 20!
Coming in the standpoint of a fellow member in the fashion industry, I actually appreciate your post.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing internet websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes around routine.
Fantastic submission! Wonderful observation on the subject. Definitely the latest bookmark.
I switched techs simply because after a few years of Ipl, I believed the results weren’t worthwhile. And then I got the home laser hair. They will guarantee that after eighteen months if hair grows back, the treatments are no cost. They’ve got both laserlight and Intense pulsed light, but I want to stick with lazer now as Ipl did not seem to decrease the quantity of hair returning.
Thank you for keeping us updated. I really appreciate it and discover all the information really helpful.
I gave up cigs last week and it is really starting to make me feel crappy now. My girl friend keeps saying I won’t be able to keep going however I am so focused of this I will be successful. Today I began experianceing painful sensations in my gut and I kinda want to have a puff. I will never give up given that I’m stopping smoking for my youngsters. I’m blessed to have the e-cigs. It has been beneficial to me.
While attempting to stop smoking, I stumbled on the smokeless cigarette. The cigarettes electronic wotks on a nicotine liquid which holds simply nicotine. Basically no poisons in the least. They already have luckily saved my life. Quitting breathing toxic chemicals feels stupendous to me!
Hey there! Very useful article! I am very glad that I was able to stumble upon your weblog while searching Google. Thank you for this great post!
I have not had a puff in 10 years. The most severe thing concerning stopping might be the first 1 to 2 weeks. Luckily this those effects went away quickly and stuff got better every day as a result of the e-cig. Please do not surrender. Please persevere and you will be able to realize success permanently.
What I wouldnt give to have a debate with you about this. You just state so many things that come from nowhere that Im pretty sure Id have a fair shot. Your blog is great visually, I think people wont be bored. But others who can look past the videos and the layout wont be so impressed with your generic figuring of this topic.
Just a fast hello and also to thank you for discussing your tips on this page. I wound up in your weblog following researching physical fitness connected issues on Yahoo… guess I lost peeing movies track of what I had been performing! Anyway I’ll be back once more within the future to check out your blogposts down the road. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.
Thanks for the post
I smoked cigarettes for a number of years and giving them up appeared to be almost impossible. I experimented with all of the quit smoking techniques still nothing at all helped me. Then I heard about the e-cig. The electronic cigarette uses a nicotine liquid that consists of nothing but nicotine. No toxic chemicals whatsoever. They’ve already in a literal sense saved my life.
I quit smoking a week ago and it is starting to make me feel crappy today. My best friend keeps telling me I will not be able to handle it however I’m so confident of this I won’t fail. Today I started getting aches and pains inside my stomach and I really would like a cigarette. I don’t give up given that I’m quitting smoking for my young children. I’m blessed to have the electronic cigarettes. It’s been very useful if you ask me.
very informative post. Looking more to something like this
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ ecigs are great. ecigs are the best. buy my ecig.
I had been in the beginning treated using Ipl which often isn’t the best method for hair removal. I began with complete arm laser hair removal. I visited an MD that applied a good early model laser beam device yet ended up with having spotty parts. Then I thought I would purchase a sensepil. I’m pleased and will be beginning different regions of my body soon. Their costs as well fit my expense plan which is definitely a tremendous benefit.
Your best way to locate laser hair treatment within driving distance is word of mouth and certainly not just by an doctor who’s getting a part of the action. I used to visit a great MD to get ipl treatments. I had spotty hairy places and had been recently thru all of those other hair removal treatments. I bought a new sensepil and haven’t been happier. At long last I am hair free during the summer months. This is going to be an amazing year for me.
The easiest strategy to locate laser or ipl hair removal in your area will be recommendation and definitely not from some MD who will be getting a bit of the pie. I used to visit an Dr . to get laser treatments. I had spotty hairy parts and had been recently through all the other hair removal treatments. I purchased the home laser hair removal and have not been happier. Finally I will be hair free for the summer season. This is going to be a good yr for me.

Wow!, this was a top quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and never seem to achieve anything
