Unfug It Up: Rachel McAdams

unfug-it-up

Let’s talk about McAdams!

I….don’t….know. I really don’t. I mean, on one hand, I feel like she OUGHT to look worse in this. On the other, I also feel like the longer I stare at it, the more it looks like she’s wearing it backwards (though I’m sure she isn’t). On my mystical third hand (like the third eye, but more helpful for juggling), I feel like I’d LOVE IT if it were a color. On the fourth hand (borrowed from my neighbor), maybe I’d like the white more if she were wearing other SHOES. On the fifth hand (my neighbor’s second hand — I hope you’re following), thank god for double-sided tape.

So, I’m throwing it to the peanut gallery. What do you think: is it awesome? Should it be black (or blue or red or whatever)? Should she just scrap it? Play stylist, readers, in the comments — as always, please continue to be as delightful as you always are:

I think it would look a lot better in an emerald green. Maybe with peep-toes and gold accessories.

2. Sarah

I think the shoes ruin the look…she would have been better with something lighter on her feet, opened toe, and in a color or metallic.
BTW< is she wearing shoulder pads here?

3. Fatema

I think it would look better in an emerald green. Maybe with gold accessories…

4. Lily

I’d get rid of the shoulder pads, give it some color, like a green jewel tone, and maybe better shoes. It’s hard to see what’s going on with them in that picture.

5. Jess

I think its’ ALL amazing. You guys are crazy!

6. Rose

The woman needs a hair stylist asap. a cute shoulder skimming cut (that and peep toes) would make ALL the difference. Oh, and she needs to change the colour of the dress… the whole thing would look a LOT less cheap it it were a warm cream colour! I love the cut of the dress, but it would look cuter if it were just a wee bit shorter. Rachel, work out the details and you’ll look like a goddess!

7. Anonymous

I think the only way that she is pulling this off is that she is so gorgeous. It’s really an awful dress. I don’t think that even a beautiful color (like emerald) would help this 80′s/sternum-baring thing out.

8. Linda

Lose the shoulder pads and maybe even the sleeves altogether. Change the color to any color but white.

9. Lulubelle Temptaion Jones

Scrap it, please. Or maybe Sarah’s on to something. A metallic shoe (silver?) with an open toe. The dress in a nice rich jewel tone. And an accessory or two. A necklace to ornament her sternum would be a plus in my opinion. In other news, is there something wrong with me that I don’t hate the shoulder pads? Of course I did graduate from HS in 1984, so there’s that.

10. Meredith

I think it is really just the shoulder pads I take issue with. The plunging neckline and the rest of it she is pulling off.

11. simaria

She looks like her heads on backwards.

12. Anna

I just can’t stand this cut and the weird way it makes people’s chests look. But yes, it would be better in a color I suppose.

13. Kate

I’d kill the shoulder pads and get the sleeves to fit first off. Maybe a higher neckline; it’s rather sternum-y.

14. WSLer

Not wanting to offend the flat chesters out there, but I feel one needs some semi-serious boobage to be able to pull this off, which McAdams does not. Not necessarily Pam Anderson level boobage, but Heather Graham level boobage would work.

I agree with the others that the shoes don;t help at all.

15. nicolette

the shoulder pads arent bad….i think without the pads it would change the siloute a bit too much and she would look like she was drowning in fabric. the problem with the shoulder pads is that you ca SEE them, which is a problem.

i second the calls for emerald green, with a gold metalic strappy sandal. better hair wouldnt hurt as well

16. funderpants

A different color dress would be less likely to let her beautiful shoulder pads show through, and now who among us wants that on our heads?

17. Lola La Balc

Actually I think the entire look is fab, even the black shoes/white dress combo.
However, if her hypothetical Bizarro World twin were to attend the same event wearing the same thing, I would put twinny in scarlet satin shoes so the two could tussle out the better combination.
Another potential combo: faintly shell pink dress with champagne OR black shoes. hmmm.

18. Foamer

I like it – it’s pretty, it’s sexy, and it’s not showing anything (from the front at least) inappropriate.

At least as long as the tape holds.

19. Rebecca

It should definitely be a different color. That style should make us say “WOW!!!” But, it’s just meh…I can see your shoulder pads…kind of like in middle school when Susie wore very thin white pants and an extra long pantyliner. It’s just embarrassing.

I like the suggestion of emerald green and peep toe shoes…that would compliment her coloring much better.

20. Tammy Lee

If it were a different colour on her…

21. razi

I like jewel tones as much as anyone, but remember it’s still summer! Lose the sleeves, shoulder pads, change the color, and the shoes and she’d look even more beautiful than she already does.

22. Lirazel

That is way, way too much sternum and collar-bone, even in a color. Especially when one’s chest is so blindingly white it looks like the Dawn of Time (which is a Good Thing and God knows I am not a fan of tanning, but this is not how I would reveal the results of good skin care). I mean, all a color is going to do is make her sternum look even whiter, or possibly reflect the color, so her skin would look pale green, or blue, or orange.

Also, the long, drape-y neckline is making her legs look stumpy, and sagging in the front as though she might be carrying her lunch in there. Or a nursing child. So, lift the neckline. I might keep it draped, though; the fabric seems nice enough, and I like the idea of the drape more than, say, a flock of cluttered necklaces.

Also, while I appreciate the subtle mouth make-up, there’s too much around her eyes if we’re going for the nearly-natural look. I’d choose a slightly darker shade of lipstick.

As to the color of the dress… I’d like to see this in a peach or coral, but if the neck was better, it could be OK in white.

23. Emmy

I think metallic shoes would have been better, but I love it. I think she can totally pull off the Dynasty-Fabness of it, and I like seeing someone in a dress like this who can still kind of look DEMURE.

24. sarahp

the shoulder pads are deranged. the color is- nursey. and that neckline- that neckline- I know the plunge to the belly button thing is big among the little titty committee but to me it’s just another example of JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD. I found myself peering at her top half for a creepy thirty seconds too long just to reassure myself that she doesn’t in fact have the torso of an adolescent boy. And the can we talk about little toe cleavage?

25. Eve Ryan

If it were left in white or was a different color, I would make the skirt less twisty and bunchy looking – cleaner. The shoes have got to go either way. A nice platform or strappy sandal maybe?

26. Heather H

I think it needs to not have sleeves, or at least lose the shoulder pads.

I’m also agreeing with the emerald green comments – a nice jewel tone would be best.

Also, to disagree (respectfully) with Wsler – I think this type of dress only works for those with smaller chests, otherwise it can get trashy looking really fast.

27. Casey

I think it’s okay, maybe the color should have been different. hopefully her tape didn’t slip through the night!

28. Molly

I don’t think white is a great color for her. Her chest is so pale that it looks weird.

I’d also prefer three quarter length sleeves and shoes that aren’t so harsh.

29. luvthefuggers

I don’t think this dress is flattering at all and even larger boobs wouldn’t save it. It looks like the front should be the back. It’s just ugly. And I don’t like her hair or makeup either.

30. Jill

Well if it was black, or any other color for that matter nobody would be able to see her SHOULDER PADS.

31. Anonymous

I love it.

I mean it could be a better colour- emerald, or deep purple?- could use a better shoe (strappier, less… office on a Wednesday). However, regardless of these proposed changes LOGICALLY being for the better, I dont think that it would change my feelings EMOTIONALLY because I love it so much already.

PS: On anyone else though… arg.

PPS: The entry on Jolie below is also cracking- im kinda digging the pockets! Theres something sexily casual about it all, like ‘oh these pockets? Its cool, Ive just got something really sexy and badass in them’.

32. jaime

so i dunno why i like this…it could just be her confident look in the pic. i think the color is kinda bad, especially since she’s a lil on the pasty side up top, but seriously, she just looks…hot to me.

33. meg

Her make-up is wrong, it’s for someone with a darker coloring and it matches too well with her hair color. It’s making her look older… which doesn’t help when you’re wearing a long sleeve, draped and vampy dress that has SHOULDER PADS. The whole thing is too Sunset Boulevard.

All you need to do is lose the shoulder pads, give her bright earrings the color of which match her shoes and maybe fix the sleeves of the dress to go above the wrist and be less drapey and it would be younger and sexier.

34. Adrian

I like it all, God knows I wish I could pull off something like that. And I don’t think this picture does her hair justice; I’ve seen pics from other angles and her hair looks cute in those.

35. anner

I would totally love it if:

a)the neckline were much narrower; plunging is fine, wide is fine, but the two are awkward together, fashion tape notwithstanding…

(by the way, that stuff has changed my life. i hardly ever wore button-down shirts before because of the boob-gap. and did you realize you can hold the flappy end of a belt down with it? i often wonder why, if i, a low-level yuppy/starving artist combo, have access to fashion tape, so many celebs seem to be without it?)

back on track here:

b)two words: metallic shoes. actually, three words: strappy metallic shoes.

by the way, i went to grad school with a sax player whose mother is best friends with R.A.’s mother, so i feel a completely unjustified sense of connection to her.

36. marlena

to start, a stunning color, emerald green would be perfect for her. the depth of the plunging neckline skews the proportions with that dress length, chops her in half. either the plunging needs to be less or the the length needs to be to the floor. an emerald green gown would be STUNNING! but overkill for the event.

37. frifri

She’s wearing a bed sheet and showing off her non-boobs. Big deal. She should wear a dress, not a couple yards of fabric that shows off her altar boy body and call it a day.

38. Kerry

Dresses with that huge plunge work better on girls with slightly bigger breasts. She looks flat as a pancake there, and I know she’s not. The shoes do NOT work it. Also, 1983 called. They want their shoulder pads back.

39. Heather

Color. Like a really vibrant blue to make her eyes pop.

Better shoes. I wish it wasn’t long sleeved. I don’t know what kind of sleeves I want, but she looks like she’d be hot in it.

It’s really not that bad though. She is beautiful, that helps.

40. JD

Agree w/ WSLER – I’m a flat chester and I don’t take offense, this is just not good on her. The color, shoes, shoulder pads and double-sided tape ruining the drape all just add up to blech for me.

41. Lori

I think it would look better in a color and I would pair it with different shoes, but I also think the camera flash is making the dress/skin contrast more severe than it really was.

42. Tara

The whole look is just way too 1988. The big updo with the little wispy bits sticking out, the pointy toe cleavage shoes, the Robert Palmer dancer at her wedding dress. Less aggressive shoes and less Working Girl hair and maybe a long pair of silver earrings would make it look more sleek and less time-warped.

43. Shanghaishrimpo

I’m with Simaria. The more I look at it, it certainly does look like Rachel’s head is on backwards! The plunging front of that dress does nothing for her. Mellow out the plunge, add some color to the dress and better shoes!

44. AC

I don’t think there is anything particularly wrong with the dress or the shoes. She doesn’t look ugly. This look is just incorrect and inauthentic for her. No matter how you style this, she will never be able to pull it off. She looks like she is playing dress up, or put another way, the dress is wearing her. On another woman, this may work maybe a vintage Sharon Stone, Angelina, etc.

45. Susan

She got out of the shower, threw on a bathrobe and ran to answer the phone, then somehow ended up at a film premiere.

46. Tara

Oh my god, I just looked again and it has SHOULDER PADS. Forget it. That dress needs to be sent back to the 80s wear it belongs and can’t hurt anyone ever again.

47. Jay

Not on back to front, more that her head has swiveled round.

48. Lisa

I totally agree with the commenter who said it looks like her head is on backwards. I think this is partly due to the shoulder pads, and to the fact that her pecs/breastages look like shoulder blades.

Other than that, though, she is gorgeous.

49. bostonblue

it’s almost awesome.
the first thing i saw was the tan lines. because of the lighting and the white dress they’re barely visible, but there is a definite contrast. i’m distracted by her shiny white sternum.
i think the dress would have been gorgeous in a bold color; a deep blue or yes, green.
maybe it’s a cliche, but i love white with a bold lip. especially since the dress brings the drama. and i sorta hate her hair. again, where’s the drama? from the neck up she’s a soccer mom.
i’m falling asleep to her shoes. white and…black!?! no way!! boring.

50. KC

She is young and beautiful and I think she is rocking this look. The dress is revealing, yet not trashy. I wish the shoes were different.

51. kate

No (N!O!) to shoulder pads! Danger! I think I would like to chop off the shoulder pads and sleeves, and pull up the neckline by like two inches, and make it a jewel tone. Maybe a super rich blue.

52. Wearing a hefty bag, myself

I think this falls under the heading of , “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” There seems to be this myth that the ultra-svelte look good in anything. Not true. The dress does look like it’s on backwards. I don’t think I’d mind the white if there weren’t such a vast expanse of pale skin. At least she lost the pink hair.

53. Lola

This is what I feel like Joan Collins would have worn to a toga party.

54. HelloDare

The dress has a built-in baby sling. Perfect for nursing but not the thing to wear to an opening. And the shoulder pads suck.

55. Brooke

it can’t be saved, because it has 80′s shoulder pads and her chest looks like a prepubescent boy. no! Rachel your hair and makeup are perfect – why’d you ruin is with a dress that you think makes you look sexy…it doesn’t it just makes every nervous. quit playing with doublesided tape and sultry stares

56. Noelle

I think she’s way too skinny for the first thing.

And with her hair back to a ginger-type hue, I think an emerald or other deep green would be better.

But I do think she should eat something.

57. Paige

I think she looks like she just ran a mile. I love the whole look but maybe with a cleaner hairstyle and better shoes?

58. kumi

I love it. I think she looks fabulous — but if I had a choice, I would change her shoes to an open-toe, lighter pair. xo

59. Jennifer

I actually like the white, but I hate the sleeves, shoulderpads and shoes.

Make it spaghetti straps, switch the shoes for something fun, colorful and strappy (maybe something in red?) and add dangly diamond earrings.

60. momtrolfreak

This is Animal-House-Toga-Party meets Sharon-Stone’s-peek-a-boo-lady-parts-scene meets those kiddie flip books where you can pair a giraffe head with an elephant body with ostrich feet (or, in this case, a corpse’s torso with a bikini-babe’s tanned legs). Strappy silver heels would play probably too much into the gladiator theme, but at least then it wouldn;t look like her feet stop at the first knuckle of each toe, like she’s been mauled in some horrific pedicure accident.

62. Kate

No sleeves, needs to be a color, different shoes.

As is, this is so Dynasty!

63. oliviacw

A lovely jeweled brooch holding the neckline together at, oh, the base of her sternum, would be fabulous. This plunge is a few inches too much for her body, I think. The white is ok, although I agree that a nice emerald or purple would be fabulous.

The shoes have too short a toe to be that pointy – the short squat V doesn’t follow the longer V of her bodice. I’d go with a slightly longer toe in a nice camel shade, or an open shoe in just about any color.

64. Anonymous

It would be better if:
1. She were a little bitter tan
2. She washed her hair lately
3. She had on white shoes or a color other than black
4. She didn’t look sweaty

65. lvr

off-topic but i have to say it:

the poster for the film is driving me crazy! the two of them are practically sideways when it’s obviously more of a horizontal composition. would look much better on the horizon underneath the title.

looks so odd i thought it was upside down initially.

end of distress.

66. Annabelle

I can’t get past the fact that it looks like she’s wearing it backwards. Maybe if it didn’t show so much rib cage/sternum? Better than Diane Kruger’s butt crack though…

67. anjali

I think the color is amazing, and i’m not too offended by the shoulder pads – they’re huge on the runways right now. i think the way she’s standing is super awkward, i also think the shoes are heavy. they would be better in a light gold and open-toed or d’orsay, strappy, something in that nature. i also think the dress might work better sleeveless or as a camisole, the long, tight sleeves look somewhat awkward.

68. J

Lose the sleeves, hike up the cowl about 2 inches, and maybe add an inch or two on the shoes. Most importantly- fix the hair and make-up!

69. LeeAnn

This dress is fug no matter the color. It could be a magical dress that changes to whatever color is the beholder’s favorite, and it’s still a disaster.

I love me some Rachel McAdams, but this is a “Oh, Honey, No” moment. Scrap it, the shoes and the hair-do and start over. There are no survivors in this train wreck.

70. Hey Girl Hey

Thoughts of Celeine Dion are too distracting for me to even really comment:

http://johnkheygirlhey.blogspot.com/2009/08/kris-kross-will-make-you-jump-jump.html

71. victoria

I don’t have any suggestions, but just a query: Why is it that sometimes very revealing dresses like this are celebrated (for example, the Versace safety-pin dress on Elizabeth Hurley, or the green Versace plunge-neckline high-slit dress on Jennifer Lopez)and sometimes they are scorned (mostly scorned)?

It’s not hard to see why most women with average figures can’t wear this kind of dress. But it’s much harder to pin down why an extemely beautiful young woman like McAdams here can’t, either. Does she need more in the way of breasts and hips? Smokier eyes? Longer JBF hair?

I suspect that McAdams is just too young and sweet for this sort of siren look, no matter what the color or shoes, but am not sure.

72. RenaissanceGrrl

Lose the shoulder pads, raise the neckline so that we’re seeing cleavage, not underboob cleavage.

Switch the shoes out. I’m not 100% sure to what. I think my personal inclination would be to wear the awesome, kicky, brightly colored shoes that have gotten pushed to the back of the closet by dint of not matching anything.

Actually, I’m kind of charmed by this overall. When did McAdams chop off her hair, though??

73. Chloe

It is an odd tendency of very flat chested women to try and make up for their lack of boobage by exposing their sternum. I think this is strange because a)it only emphasizes their flat-chestedness and b)it also emphasizes just how skinny they are. Don’t get me wrong, flat chests and skinny sternums are fine by me but I just don’t think Rachel should have made these two attributes quite so front and center on her walk down the red aisle. She can definitely do much better!

74. Whitney

I think her entire outfit works….it’s not fantastic but it works. It could be fantastic if she were less nude uptop and had fabulous shoes.

75. Adri

This would never work if she didn’t have that face and those legs, and different shoes wouldn’t hurt, but I think I like it.

76. nancy

Now I know why Lauren Conrad said she never wears white in public.

77. nancy

scratch that: when being filmed.

78. Peony

Lose the shoulder pads, make the plunging neckline less plunge-y (if that’s a word), change the colour to a vivid blue or green like many of you have suggested and absolutely change the shoes. But you have to ask, is she just wearing this to be ironic?

79. Emily

She looks like she’s been attacked. Sweaty and too exposed. The skin on her neck and face is so much darker than on her torso! No matter what color the dress is, this gradation is no good. But I do agree with others’ suggestions that the color be emerald green.

80. pinkie

I actually love the white on her & I love the drape of the dress in the front. The shoes absolutely mystify me. She’s a celebrity–surely she owns a pair of shoes that aren’t black??? But the big clunker for me is the shoulder pads. GAH!

81. Jacquilynne

I could do with less — or at least less visible — shoulder pads and much different shoes, but other than that, I think she’s rocking it pretty hard.

82. Zeke

I wish it were in a halter neck so loose the sleeves and then add some bracelets. I don’t want to take away from her neckline but I wish there were some accessories in there. And then, like everyone else, different shoes in a color.

83. Kendel

Oy. Just, oy.
One word – Dynasty. That is all.
Oh, a few more words, semi-related: the comments on this photo are QUALITY. I wish we could all get in one room and discuss each photo on an old projector and with coffee afterwards. Could be fun.

84. Freddie

Mmmm, I have a huge girl crush on Rachel McAdams and can’t say anything except, “Isn’t her skin stunning?”

85. Neil G

I think that’s just not the best picture of that outfit. She isn’t *that* flat-chested. Click on the link from my handle up there to see a better pic.

86. Jenn E

Turn that dress around 180 degrees and make it a more appealing color! This would solve the strange sternum-baring cut and the way it’s washing her out. Change those shoes, please. Something metallic, possibly strappy. A chunky, long necklace and a nice clutch to compliment the shoes. And get RID of those shoulder pads. She could also use a tailor for those sleeves.

87. Anonymous

I actually think this looks awesome, except for the weird pointiness in the soulders.

88. Karen

Hmmm. Well, given that I had that EXACT SAME DRESS in black suede, in which the dipping cowl most ASSUREDLY went in the back, I have to say I’m prejudiced. Of course it’s backwards and of course it shouldn’t be white. No one that blindingly pale should wear white, anyway.

I would ALSO like to point out that I bought it in 1986. If my calculations are correct, that was 23 years ago. I think La McAdams needs a stylist who wasn’t at her peak when Rachel Zoe was in grade school.

89. Aubrey

Ew. Definitely do not like the dress, but I could deal with it in a different color…maybe. It’s completely unflattering on her, but I think a lot of that has to do with her chest being pasty white. Also, the hair makes the whole outfit look sloppy. Just, ew.

90. Jaime

Turn it around and blot the shine off her face.

91. Victoria

I say scrap it. I really am not into that much skin showing. I also am not a fan of dresses that nearly match skin-tone, and this comes ridiculously close.

92. Dawn

Oh, I have to respectfully disagree on the suggestions for metallic shoes. I shudder to think of all the Bee Gees-related punchlines that would produce.
I say bring up the neckline (or whatever it’s called when it’s at your bellybutton) about 4 inches, make it a color so we can’t see the shoulder pads, and accessorize with Eric Bana. Eric Bana makes everything better.

93. Valerie

I think it’s ridiculous. That is just way too much chestal area.

94. Kat

I don’t mind the color – I think that the white looks nice against McAdams’s skin. I don’t even mind the cut, except the fact that it really looks like it’s on backwards – so maybe if it were less ridiculously comically low-cut? Like, if it were more of a traditional wrap? Like, if the lowest point of the V wasn’t so drapey? But would that make it too boring? I don’t mind the square shoulders – I think it looks interesting. But I would definitely shorten those sleeves. They are way too long, and it looks silly.

As to the shoes, they (or maybe the angle of the picture), make it look like her toes are squashed into something way smaller than it should be – they look cut off, or something. And the matte black of the shoe is too severe for the bright, shiny white of the dress. I’d either give her a fun pop of color, like a deep red pump, or I’d go the opposite way and pair the dress with a pair of nude patent leather pumps to make it look really clean, and to make her legs look longer.

The hair and make-up are good, though. As are the earrings.

95. Jen

Lose the shoulder pads and the sleeves. Probably improve the fit of the skirt part a little also. I’m okay with the white, but would prefer a nice metallic peeptoe shoe with it.

96. hotpants(TM)

I think it would look great in something other than white. And the shoes are all wrong.

97. Ally

The biggest problem is that she opened the front WAY too far. If she pulled it closed a little more, she would pretty much be good to go. But I would also like to see a different shoe choice. Gold sandals would probably look good (I think silver might be too light w/ the white).

98. Pam

I like it. I think she looks great. I would like to see her hair styled differently though.

99. LydiaBrunch

I love it. Interesting without trying *too* hard, you know?

100. Bubba

Just. oh. dear. Head on backwards is right. This is not a nice look, and I don’t think changing the color or the shoes can save it. She is a gorgeous girl, but this makes me want to take her to my Italian grandma’s kitchen and feed her pasta for a month straight. Start over please!

101. LLinNYC

She looks terrific and summery and totally on. She could have been a little less obvious with the tape, and I would have gone with a different shoe (gold or platinum, strappier), but minor points really. There have been lots of boring/borderline out-of-style stilettos recently, with no good explanation.

102. Mememe!

To me, the color (or lack thereof) is okay. The shoulder pads should have been covered in flesh colored fabric (her flesh color, which is abnormally light….) so that they didn’t make themselves so noticable. The sleeves should have been appropriately rusched, not just made extra long and then pushed up by her. Besides looking iccky, that will drive a girl NUTS to have to keep pushing her sleeves up all night (she’s clearly got other things to do w/her hands….like make sure her other “girls” don’t escape and run wild in the wind…). Lastly, the shoes are terrible. Something strappy and metallic would have worked much better.

103. Janet

If the deep V stopped at just below her breasts, instead of halfway down her stomach, this would be fab. Well, as long as the shoulder pads stopped showing through the fabric. Details.

104. kiley

I love, love, love it. With her skin tone and her hair it looks like a slice of much needed heaven. Not too many people could pull this look off. I think she is doing it quite well. Props to her and the outfit!

105. Mols

I would definitely like it better in an emerald green, especially with her coloring. Although the shoulder pads and cut nearly down to her gaga front, gives it a bit of a Dynasty vibe, I really like it. Shorten the sleeves a little, instead of using them as wrist accessories try a couple pretty Deco silver or gold and marcasite bracelets and go for a metallic peeptoe. The ones she’s wearing are a little zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, snort, gasp, what? Oh, sorry I fell asleep staring at the math teachers shoes. that said – I heart McAdams and think it would be fun to have a coffee date with her but instead end up drinking whiskey sours at some under the radar lounge somewhere flirting and dancing to standards with the 80 year old man at the end of the bar because he’s sweet and misses his dead wife and we’re just nice girls like that. I’m pretty sure if we met that’s what would happen.

106. gobling

I think she looks lovely in it, which surprises me, because that is A WHOLE LOTTA TORSO.

Different shoes, yes, but if it were a different colour, it would contrast with her skin more, and that WHOLE LOTTA TORSO would suddenly look Bai-Ling-style demi-nudist.

107. sybann

1st hand: lose shoulder pads

2nd: not quite so low (we should SEE your navel or not have to wonder if it’s missing)

3rd: shorten the sleeves

4th: the color should not be so close to your nonexistant skin tone. A nice red or blue would be pretty on Rachel.

and gratuitous fifth hand? It should hit right at the knee if we’re going to get a view of your entire sternum. That or floor-length.

108. Marie

For a white, shiny, clingy dress, it’s not bad. But it could be worlds better. It should be a color and it needs different shoes, even if it was black. And the hair needs help.

109. Courtney

My first thought? Toga party! Which is kind of saying a lot seeing as I’ve never been to a toga party in my life. Perhaps in another color, and minus the sleeves, and showing less chest I’d like it.

110. JESR

I have a hard time criticising Rachel McAdams for anything; this is almost certainly a result of first seeing her in “Slings and Arrows” s.1, which: run, go watch it now, I can wait.

Anyway- the white is way problematic, and the shoes are dumb, but worst, to my eyes, are the hair and make-up, which look too much like she was trying to be cool and sophisticated and ended up with “Junior High Girl Gets Glamor Portrait” instead.

So: different comb-out without that weird lump above her left ear, softer eye, brighter lip, less pearlescent cheek.

Get rid of the shoulder pads, readjust the front to a narrower fall, or occupy the vast emptieness with a necklace of some sort (I’m thinking jade or pale natural turquoise or blue agate- something glossy but not shiny, and subtly colorful). Mess about with the necklace a bit to see if it takes the curse off the white charmeuse; otherwise, the dress needs to be some color, even if it’s a pale grey-green or nearly not there periwinkle blue.

Nuke the shoes and replace them with anything else except white satin pumps or anything black.

111. Robin L

It’s so deliciously ’80s. And as such, there is more than a hint of fug to it, but I like to think in a way that kind of works. She looks like her name should be “Chastity Blaine” the prim little vixon of a daughter of the wall street tycoon, hell bent on taking over Daddy’s company and seducing her wild but earnest sister, Viviene’s, rocker boyfriend Derek.

I don’t know where that bit of fanfic was going, but basically, I kind of dig her dress as-is.

112. Amo

Thought#1 ew
Thought#2 she really does have ‘man-shoulders’!
Thought#3 have i seen “mean girls” too many times? is that even possible?

113. cathy

I surprisingly like the shoulder pads. not all women can work them but I think RA does it beautifully. I like the dress too, but it could use a necklace of some kind? OR chandelier-y/dangley earrings. she just looks under-accessorized. As for the shoes, nude heels would have been super sexy; Idk who chose black.

BTW I totally disagree that you need to have big boobs to pull off this kind of neckline. On the contrary, I think if you’re too big up there you end up looking cheap with this neckline.

no matter what this woman wears though, she is beautiful! major girl crush. and I want her SKIN.

114. Wren

Sorry. I don’t like anything about it — the color, the shoes, the accessories, the way the skirt drapes, and especially the obvious need for entire rolls of double-sided tape.

She’s gorgeous, but that outfit reminds me too much of those curtains you’re suppose to “artistically arrange” to hang over a pole…the ones the cat likes to pull on and make look like a heap of cheap nylon.

115. Laura

I dunno, it’s very Star Trek Goes to a Gala. I don’t enjoy it, but, it’s interesting. If that’s not strong enough a reason to scrap, then, toss because it brings unnecessary attention to the flatness she has going on in the chest area. While I can empathize, sometimes it’s best to play up other assets, like her fabulous gams.

116. Christine

The shoulder pads are hideous. The dress would look better if she didn’t look as though she were staving to death. Eat something, please!!!

117. Suzy

I’m puzzled by those who think she’s rocking this look! It’s horrible.

First things first: cover that poor exposed chest. She looks like a hospital patient whose backwards gown just fell open. Just sad. Here’s a basic rule for EVERYONE: No underboob. No matter how much or little boob you have, UNDERboob should not show.

Second: cut off the mile-too-long sleeves.

Third: take away that weird gathered hemline, which competes with the top and lends a general awkwardness to the drape. I’d like to see a knee-length, smooth, wider hem.

Fourth: hide the shoulder pad lines. Small pads are okay to achieve the drape needed for this dress, but they need to be invisible!

Fifth: change the color. This shade of white washes her out, even if it looks better when the cameras aren’t flashing. I like all the suggestions of green, but I’m thinking that deep piney green, or maybe a soft olive?

Sixth: rescue those overexposed toes from being stuffed into those bad shoes. I agree, a peep-toe look would be nice–or even a pointy-toed pump in a nicer cut and different color!

118. Grammarous

I was hoping you’d post this! It does look like her head’s on backwards. Showing sternum is one thing, but (nearly) showing clear down to the navel!?! Tacky. Also makes her look wider and flatter than she is. The sleeves are too long too, and I loathe the bottom hem. The shoulder pads evoke an “ugh – are we still doing round 2 of those?” but I can live with them. Other than allll that :) , it’s not too terrible.

119. Erin

I think the color should be a jewel tone, emerald green or a beautiful blue would be just the trick. I would also change the sleeves, either make them above the elbow flowy things or make the dress a halter top. Shes a beautiful woman but since my boyfriend is in love with her, she will forever be known as The Forehead to me. ;)

120. Chierici

WAY TOO MUCH STERNUM!!!
Otherwise I think she looks great.

121. Laura

I think Rachel McAdams is lovely, but I have to agree with all the thumbs-down comments on this outfit and shoes. It’s not doing much for her and those SHOULDER PADS! I’m all for 80′s inspired garb, but shoulder pads (especially on a slightly see-through white dress) is where I draw the line.

122. kitty

By Kate on August 13, 2009 11:42 AM
“I’d kill the shoulder pads and get the sleeves to fit first off. Maybe a higher neckline; it’s rather sternum-y” I agree! the “bodice” as is doesn’t do as much for her as it could if it fit a little better. I’d change to a lighter color shoe too.

123. MeMe

Why is SHE so shiny? She seems to be made out of a flesh-colored version of the dress material. Seriously, close-up on her sternum area and you’ll that she sparkles in much the same way the dress does and it continues all the way up on to her face. Blech.

124. Molly

You need to have some skin color to wear white. Pale skin + all white = Washed out. You also need to dress up that over-exposed chest with a lovely bling neck bauble. So I agree that a different color and a neck accessory would change this whole look.
Her hair is horrible. And she has pretty hair, so someone order up a trip to the stockade for her hairdresser.
No, no, no to black shoes with a white dress.
Just no.

125. Matt

The shoulder pads are just strange and I think i’d like to see it without sleeves; just have wide straps or something.

126. Cat

Shoulder pads! SHOULDER PADS! So, take those out…and also, I think it really would be better just turned around. I know its not on backwards, but that should be the back. Leave it white, though. And change the shoes to something strappy in a fun color. And perhaps brighter lipstick/ less eye makeup. Unfugged.

127. Stephanie

I think the color makes her look like she’s absolutely glowing, unfortunately the color also allows you to see the shoulder pads right through the fabric of the sleeves. The folded hem also makes it look even more like its on backwards because it reminds me of times when I think I have something on right, then I look in the mirror and realise it looks wrong and try to twist it around instead of just taking it off and putting it back on, making it uncomfortably twisted.

128. Anne

Rachel is stunning, but not in this. I don’t think those necklines are usually flattering, but on her it definitely isn’t! Thanks other readers for pointing out the shoulder pads, I totally missed those, but they really should go! And yes, I do agree that if she kept the dress, it should be in a nice warm colour, maybe an earthy-tone, which bohemian-type accessories, and peep-toe shoes for sure. And the hair, I would say bed-head, without being actual bed-head.

129. Anonymous

i love the whole thing. love it.

now…if only she’d get back together with that ryan dude…

130. thereset

lose the shoulder pads and i’m fine. not blown away, but she is mcadams. the girl is gorgeous. she can pull it off. but no one pulls off shoulder pads.

131. dinsquared

It’s SO close and yet…the dress definitely needs to be a color. Maybe midnight blue or a rich dark red.

I like the neckline, it just needs to come up six inches, so it’s tantalizingly showing her breastbone, not her navel.

The eye makeup is bordering in heroin chic for me. I want to take a tissue and just rub off some of what’s smudged underneath her bottom lashes.

And get the poor girl some metallic peep toes that fit. Yikes.

132. Janice Marie

Scrap it! Do you know what is really wrong with it – the shoulders (I know, I know – who is looking at the shoulders!).

It looks like a throwaway from the Dynasty wardrobe department.

Plus – white is ugly unless you are a bride – and even then……..

133. Sue

I think it would look better sleeveless, not quite so low cut, and with lighter shoes — something strappy and metallic.

134. Turkleton

I kind of can’t believe no one is echoing your most totally astute notice that this dress makes it look like she is an owl whose head has alarmingly swiveled 180. I had to do several take backs before I concluded that yes, this was indeed her front and it wasn’t some head transplant gone wrong. Not okay.

135. angie

heres the thing ladies:

1/ I can see her sadly wilting shoulder pads.
2/ I can see the breath entering her lungs.

now tell me how green peep toes can save that?
they are footwear not magic beans. jeez.

thats all I really need to say about that.

136. karen

Ditch the sleeves and shoulder pads. I’m not offended by the white but it would look great in a richer color and with a pair of strappy sandals.

137. Reject

This reminds me way to much of that scene in “Death Becomes Her” when Meryl Streep fell down the stairs and ended up with her head on backwards.

Dye the dress red and bleach the hair and you have the makings of a sequel.

138. Katie

I love her hair. She should be wearing something retro-chic that would work with that vibe.

But if we had to stick with this dress, I would take out the shoulder pads and make them cups in the front and cut off the sleeves to make the V less deep. Then dye it … I agree with others who say emerald green, probably because I’m thinking of Katherine Heigl’s recent one-shouldered thing. That dress would probably overwhelm Rachel McAdams b/c she seems petite, but I’d like her in something along those lines. Maybe that green dress without the big sleeve — yeah, that’s it!

139. Winona

1. Add color to dress
2. Turn dress around
3. Strappy shoes

140. Katariina

It’s lovely! And she’s very skinny. I wish I’d be too.

Though the shoulder-part of the dress is a bit weird.

141. cammie

I didn’t know Kris Kross was making a comeback.

Seriously, I don’t think that there’s any saving this one except for a sandwich and a turtleneck.

142. Laura

So, two main thoughts. Well, one thought. One question:

1) This is not a neckline. A neckline has to have some relation to one’s neck. This, not so much.

2) When did it become sexy for a woman to show the world that her chest resembles nothing so much as that of an Abercrombie and Fitch hottie? Seriously, I’ve seen more cleavage on those guys.

This depresses me.

143. april

i feel like this dress is from 1986. i really don’t like it on her.

144. Michelle

I too thought it looked like she’s wearing it backwards. Perhaps if she got rid of the shoulder pads and the wrap on top actually covered her chest. It would look more conventional, but then you’d notice how gorgeous she is instead of thinking her head is on backwards.

145. Alison

Visible shoulder pads are never good.
The dress looks sloppy – too many folds/pleats with such a loose fabric, I just want to take an iron it it. It’s also too big – it doesn’t look like it fits and it needs to be in a color.

So #1 – streamline the cut and make it a touch tighter (perhaps a pencil skirt type bottom?) #2, a color or a print, please #3 accessories and loose the black shoes. #4) a non 1983 hairdo would be great.

146. Not Lady Ga Ga

Dear Celebrities,
I have no desire to see your sternums. Please stop flashing me weird middle body flesh.
Thank you.
Not Lady Ga Ga

147. TittsMcGee

Shoulder pads are bad enough. Shoulder pads that can be seen through the fabric are unforgivable. Actually, this dress is all kinds of bad. But, if I had her body (esp her chest – How I wish I could go bra-less!) I would probably wear it just because few others could come close to pulling it off. Its fun to gloat sometimes. As for the color and shoes – they’re fine.

148. ktr2

When I first looked at this picture I honestly thought it was Liv Tyler… the hairstyle and the smile make Rachel McAdams look just like her. I think either one of them would look lovely in this dress in emerald green (as a number of other people have said).

149. cherriej63

The dress isn’t good because she doesn’t have the chest for it. It makes her look like her head is on backwards. If she insists on wearing it, black would be best because it would detract from her lack of chest but also raise the drape neck up some. Fill in the neckline w/ a serious gold necklace and also change the shoes. Do something better with her hair, wear it down loose, possibly with long hair extensions.

150. Cinderella

No sleeves, remove the sholder pads, make it in a jewel tone, give her some kicky metallic stillettos and there you go! Where are dress-ripping wicked step-sisters when you need them?

151. NLgirl

You’re right – she SHOULD be wearing it reversed. And somehow the color and cut makes it all kinda bland.

She should loose the sleaves (or maybe short sleaves) and go for a nice green colour.

But… (OK this might be a little bit against the rules) – how about Angelina in the leather dress? Is it just me or does she look awfully thin in that picture?

152. Anne (in Reno)

Keep the shoes. Make it charcoal gray (I’m pretending it’s already fall) and move that cowl thing up about a foot. Then rip out the damn shoulder pads.

Also, I agree on the Liv Tyler-ness of this shot.

153. Elise

I so had that same dress in 1985. Also, a bilevel haircut.

154. Juju

it reminds me of the scene in “Death Becomes Her” when Goldie knocks Meryl’s head backwards…

and, the drape on the skirt makes her knees look – gross…

Good in theory, and she’s beautiful, but there’s sadly no fix for this.

155. Joe

It’s a weird combination of too-matronly and too-revealing. But I have to say, I am completely jealous of/fascinated by Rachel’s ability to wear any hair color and have it look good on her. Brunette, redhead, blonde, it all works on her. So unfair!

156. Hypatia

I think she’s pulling off the drape and the color– certainly better than most could.
For me, the tightness and plainness of the sleeves are jarring in contrast with the loose drapiness of the rest. I might lose the sleeves entirely, especially since the skirt is of a modest length.
Not crazy about the shoes either, but the sleeves are more bothersome.

157. Tasneem

i love it i live for it and it speaks to the whole time traveling thing as if to say yes this could have been worn a few years ago a few decades ago TIME TRAVEL is in ! on the 6th hand ( kind of like the 6th sense but not ) i feel as though the shoes are a bit off not like off off but just one off. ya dig. listen you girls are fabulous and you make my life complete. as always show up with love. mccadams does that… um lest we forget the notebook…

158. Anna

i feel like a really subtle beaded camisole would add some subtle shimmer and take the attention away from her sternum. it would also make the whole outfit a bit more playful without being over the top. shoes – eh. black is fine but not very exciting. let’s face it tho – no matter what she wears she’s gorgeous.

159. Magpie

Color is good, any color really, but yeah, I’m leaning towards something in dark green. A little cami or something slightly lacey underneath would look lovely, instead of gaping at a little too bare chest flesh. Lose the shoes, maybe opt for something metallic (bronze might work), and then lose the ever-loving shoulder pads. This isn’t the 80s despite what most current “fashion” is trying to tell us.

160. Tasneem

i love it i live for it and it speaks to the whole time traveling thing as if to say yes this could have been worn a few years ago a few decades ago TIME TRAVEL is in ! on the 6th hand ( kind of like the 6th sense but not ) i feel as though the shoes are a bit off not like off off but just one off. ya dig. listen you girls are fabulous and you make my life complete. as always show up with love. mccadams does that… um lest we forget the notebook…

161. anon ymous

I think it’s too big. (which is weird, because most celebs think if you can zip it up, it fits)
If she got a smaller size, closed up the front to at least the bottom of her rib cage (instead of her navel) and wore a good neckace, as mentioned above, she should be able to keep the dress. The shoulder pads should either go, or be re-lined in beige so they don’t show. The shoes and hair also have to go – they’re terrible, and I don’t have any solutions for them.

162. Karla

It needs to be a jewel color and she needs a nice long, glittery necklace running down that crevice in the front.

163. Jessica H.

Too sleazy on her- she’s so cute! I’d sew up the neckline just a few inches, and change the color to deep blue/green.

164. manscaper

I completey agree with the other’s above who referenced Meryl Streep in ‘Death Becomes Her’. I am 100% certain this must be on backwards, there is simply no other explanation for it, it would be the gorgeous back to a dress but as a front it is bizzare. Looking at the shoulders I just can not believe this is being worn correctly.

165. InfamousQBert

i’m never a big fan of the crazy low-cut frocks. i think it would be great if it just didn’t dip to her lady-bits. you can still have a super-sexy low-cut dress without risking ALL of your secrets.

so, bring it up to reveal only an inch of sternum below the breasts. i like the white dress, but maybe some different shoes? either a good, bright red, or a metallic, preferably gold. adjust other accessories accordingly and voila! much better.

166. KVLM

I think it looks like she rolled of the set from when they took the publicity photo behind here, pulled the sheet around and made it work. But it didn’t. Would be so much better black, turned around, longer an with different shoes. I just can’t get away from what happens at the hem line though, it’s looks like what my cappuccino does when I run a stirrer through it — and not in a good way. There are just too many elements going on here. Maybe if they’d dropped the hem line AND the ruching I might get over the shoulders and the nakedness. Maybe.

167. I'MRIGHTYOU'REWRONG

she looks awesome.

168. deb

I love her and she can do no wrong. :)

169. Samantha

What bothers me about this is that it’s so … blatantly “sexy” that it somehow is not, in fact, sexy. It’s just too much, and frankly, it makes her look flat-chested, and I suppose that CAN be sexy, but in this particular instance, it’s not working. I agree that it might look better if it were a color, though.

170. Vicki

There are not enough hands in the universe to make this OK. Scrap it and start over. THAT INCLUDES THE HAIR McAdams. A little less product next time please.

171. Ciera

This looks like something Keira Knightly would wear, except it would look way worse on her…she would be all pointy underneath it.
I really like Rachel and I actually think this looks good, as long as she doesn’t make this kind of thing a habit. It would seems a strange choice if she were at the big premier of HER movie though…is she? That movie looks terrible, by the way…
In conclusion: as long as she is wearing this at an event at which she is not the center, I think it is great the way it is!!!

172. Andrea

I am distracted by the fact that she looks like she’s BOILING HOT. She is glistening with sweat from shiny forehead to glistening right pinkie toe. For her sake, how about something without a long fitted sleeve?

173. Rachel

Lose the shoulder pads (shouldn’t that just be standard procedure at this point? NO SHOULDER PADS EVER) AND the sleeves. I think it would look awesome sleevless. And in emerald green. But cutting off the sleeves is priority #1.

174. Anonymous

White is fine. But PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE lose the shoulder pads. Thank you.

175. Grace

I think women without even a hint of cleavage should stop wearing dresses and tops with such severe necklines. It looks less like the dress is on backwards and more like Ms. McAdams head is on backwards! (Anyone else remember that awesome scene from Spaceballs?) That being said, maybe the best way to unfug it would be to apply a little bronzer on her sternum.

176. amalo

Better hair and no shoulderpads are the most important changes to make here. Changing the color is mostly academic I think (I suspect we’d have no issue with the white on lots of other people) and I’m willing to leave the shoes entirely up to personal choice on this one.

177. Anonymous

White is fine, hair is fine, shoulderpads are fine, even the deep neck is fine. Just the shoes need to go. Something lighter or more colorful, and more open.

178. Kara

I don’t like the dress. The long sleeves, the color, the shoulderpads. It’s all very meh.

But she doesn’t look bad either but that’s probably because she has a smokin hot body.

179. Anonymous

See, I think the plunge works because the rest is so covered. The back goes right up the back of her neck, there are sleeves, and the shoes are classic. I’ve worn a dress with a neckline like this (thank goodness for small chests!), and it’s not excess if there are sleeves, it’s a bit longer, and the back isn’t open. It’s not like JLo’s infamous Versace.

180. Megs

Perhaps it wouldn’t be such a problem if a. it didn’t look backwards (it does) and b. she didn’t have SHOULDER PADS! She’s a tiny person. This isn’t the 80s.

181. bylygyn

When JLo wore the boob dress several years ago, I thought it was daring and unexpectedly sophisticated. Since then I have never seen a decent dress with a belly button neckline. I always either think: wow, no boobs, or wow, fake boobs.
I think this girl is very attractive and she looks like she is straining to look like a hooker. If you’re going to look like a street walker, it should atleast look effortless. Form follows function.
I can’t offer anything constructive. I put this dress in my “Why God? 80s fashion was horrible the first time around” category.

182. jinxedone

What we should really be talking about is the Joan Collins shoulder pads.

183. Michelle

Does it GET more Dynasty than this??? The shoulder pads, the neckline, the HAIR??? It looks like she’s at a movie theatre…perhaps it’s a marathon screening of Dynasty episodes where they dress up and fling cocktails at the screen, a la Rocky Horror.

184. JenniferWriter

Why is she wearing Jennifer Lopez’s dress? Only J.Lo with her diva pout and golden cleavage could rock this look.

Rachel looks like she’s doing a send up of Maryl Streep in Death Becomes Her.

185. Courtney

I guess it could be nice in a color, or with more exciting shoes, but should I be embarrassed that OMG I LOVE IT!??! She looks hot.

186. lisa b.

On the one hand, I thing Rachel always looks beautiful, and she definitely does here. On the other hand–and these two, frankly, are all the hands I need–this dress makes me nervous.

187. Bindy

To WSLER: I totally disagree that one needs bigger boobs to carry off a slit-to-there dress. NO! That would look trampy! The only women who can look elegant in this kind of dress are small-chested ones.

That said, Rachel need to lose the shoulder pad, shorten the dress maybe an inch and add silver sandals.

188. Kristin P

She doesn’t have enough boobs to pull it off. It looks like a little boy is wearing this getup… with a pretty head attached to his neck of course. And tooooo low.

189. candace

I am more concerned with the god-awful shoulder pads…

190. Rayna

To sum up: (because I basically agree with about 95% of y’all, but just want to put the comments together)

!) Shoulder pads must die (come on, they weren’t all that even in the 80s )
2) Jewel tone (emerald w/b very nice on RMcA)
3) Strappy metallic shoes & appropriate accessories – tres festive.
4) Make the neckline a little more reasonable (as per poster above – some relation to NECK as opposed to STOMACH) OR add subtle beaded camisole per poster above – a little bling would be lovely.
5) SANDWICH!!!

191. Fatima

I think it is quite promising. The shoulder pads and the plunging neckline are way to much together. A modest plunging v neck would be better because the dress itself is quite elegant.
A bright color would really compliment her skin tone. A lot of people say emerald green and I agree, or maybe even an orange or a hot pink. Bright colors look great on her.

192. mikki_vb

Imagine that dress in a jewel-toned pink color, with some fun metalic shoes – silver or gold, your pick. Beautiful!

What really bugs me the most is her hair. It looks like she just rolled out of the gym, threw on the clothes and ran to the red carpet. I think I’d like it better if it were all down around her shoulders – might take some attention off of the CHEST PLATE!

193. Zhenya

I think the dress is actually fab on her, I love the draping and she gets away with the colour but the shoes are a problem. Maybe if they were sandals or she chose gold or any othor colour but black…Lets face it though, it could be a lot worse!

194. jael

Bright red, copper peep toe, cap sleeve, no (or only tiny) shoulder pads. Done and done.

195. Maria

Boring, weirdly draped, I hate the extreme cleavage and the shoulder pads.

I guess I don’t like the dress, she needs to start again.

196. Fufen

oh my, Alexis Colby anyone?

197. Mrs. MidAtlantic

Without the sleeves it could be very sexy!

198. Kristina

She should eat.

199. Dawn

Long gold necklace, gold drop earings, hair slick back keep the shoes. That’s how I would have done it.

200. Shailu

could someone please explain why light skinned/pale celebrities wear clothing that is the same color as their skin tone?

color, woman– wear something in a color.

201. p jane

White or silver satin, strappy sandals.

*LOVE* her hair!

202. Lisa

That is a very, very, very pretty girl, and I’m having trouble figuring out if I don’t hate this because she can wear just about anything and remain pretty or whether my stomach flu has clouded my thinking and eyesight. But that low neck and the color, however, makes me think “mammogram gown” and that is not a good thought, fashion wise. Obviously, the neckline and those foul should pads. Bring the neckline up so we get a hint of what’s there, and then a bling-y necklace. Change sleeves, and then do some pretty cuff bracelets. I don’t hate the hem.

Those damnable shoes! I think they are Louboutin Pigalle pumps and I just don’t like all that toe cleavage, and with all the real cleavage here the effect is contrived in a bad way. I might think about a colored strappy sandal depending on the bag and the bling.

203. Amy

I cannot be objective because Rachel McAdams is fabulous! Plus, when you have skin like that, your clothes take a back seat.

204. La Seditiosa

It’s a big ol’ pile of yuck.

However, I think if she removed the sleeves, wore white shoes, and raised the neckline so it was merely a deep V instead of a navel-length “oh God my eyes!” V, it would be just fine.

205. Emily

Yes, she SHOULD look a lot worse, but she actually looks pretty awesome here. Lose the fug shoulder pads and trade out the Eastwick shoes for a nude or neutral shoe and she’s totally FAB.

206. mandalynn

Short sleeves?

207. Paige

I saw it and thought “HOLY 80s!” The shoulder pads need to go, and it would look better in a color. Somebody up there said emerald green and I second that. The shoes are a little wintry, so she could change those, too.

208. Tiffany

There is a strong resemblance to the white suit that Celine Dion wore for the 1999 Oscars, only backwards…

209. Katinka

yes, emerald green would make it look a lot prettier, but what actually bothered me most was the hair! what’s going there?

210. fiona4802

I totally approve of anyone trying to look like Joan Collins, but she hasn’t quite got it here. Nice try Rachael.

211. linas

the color, shoes, and shoulder pads need to go

212. christopher

may i just tell you how much i h a t e toe cleavage?

that is all.

213. Cate

I can’t believe I’m saying this but the dress and shoes just don’t matter on her. She transcends them.

214. allie

The white is wrong, it should be a color, most def. The over-sized shoulder pads, the plunging deep v, the hair – it adds up to all that was wrong with the 80′s in one outfit.

215. Sarah

It’s kind of awesome in an updated Dynasty way with the shoulder pads and the ruching. I think you hit it right on the dot when you said the color is wrong. Her chest area is SO pale it almost seems to blend into the dress. Were this a different color, I think she would rock it.

However, I can’t decide what color I think would look best. I think red would be too garish and borderline trashy. Bright blue might work, but may also wash her out. I don’t think black would look right… I can’t imagine any overly bright color like orange or yellow looking very appealing. Perhaps a soft mauve would do it – but then that might be more Dynasty, less modern Dynasty. :) I think a different color (tbd) would really pull this outfit together.

216. Madame Bulldog

I like the makeup and her luminous skin. There is so darn much of it, I couldn’t help but notice. The dress looks cheap especially because it doesn’t drape correctly and needs a whole roll of double sided tape to hold the front on, and the construction is cheesy as well. We should not be able to see the outline of the shoulder pads. Also, not a fan of toe cleavage, especially not x10.

217. ausa_esq

Unfugging this is a major project. Plunging necklines are fine, but this is too low. But if you turn that plunging neckline into a plunging back, remove the sleeves and horrendous shoulder pads, and dye it a pretty blue to pick up her eyes, it would be quite pretty. Then add some strappy platinum sandals, some pretty earrings with a little dangle, and slightly lighter eye make up, and . . . voila!

218. Rena

I think it’s the full length sleeves that really bother me.

If the sleeves were removed and replaced with some straps, the dress would seem more balanced to me. (Plus, sleeves to the wrist in August??) I don’t think the plunging cut of the dress does her any favors either, it just highlights her bony chest. I don’t say that to be mean, better bony than having implants. It just doesn’t suit her figure.

But on the positive side: the skirt flatters her, I really like the way the fabric drapes. And while I never like white gowns on people who aren’t getting married, I actually think that shade of white looks fantastic and it really pops in photographs.(maybe because the fabric has a slight sheen? Usually white looks flat to me).

So overall: Nay on the sleeves and the cut. Yay on the fabric, which drapes beautifully and photographs very well. I don’t hate the white, but a great red or green would not be opposed. The dress passes for me, but just barely.

219. TLP

It would be better in a color, as the white washes out on her skin. It needs a better shoulder line as well. Mostly it shouldn’t have such a low neckline (chestline?) because it makes her look as flat chested and bony as an undernourished ten-year-old.

220. Clare

I love the bottom half because it gives her a great shape but the top half looks like she just threw the dress on and hasn’t gotten around to straightening it out yet. I really don’t like seeing the breastbone either, it’s too much. And yeah, she does look kind of flat-chested, more so than I suspect she really is. It’s a shame, the dress really takes away from her very pretty face. The shoulderpads I’m ok with though, they’re not too in-your-face and add structure. But yes I agree the shoes have to go. So, I would have: higher neckline, jewel colour instead of white as other people have suggested, and metallic shoes.

221. lucylucy

safety pin it.

you can kind of tell she’s rocking some double sided tape, which is always seems icky to me.

222. Richard

One Word: YELLOW.

A second word: DYNASTY. (even tho i see it about 14 comments ago. deal.)

In white, methinks it would look better on someone named Vanessa Williams – either one will do, whomsoever needs to be clothed at the moment.

223. Kara

The neckline (not sure it’s a neckline if it goes to your waist) seems desperate to me. Bring that up to a more manageable level. Lose the shoulder pads!! And find a more inspired shoe. There- unfugged.

224. kates

Dear Rachel,

EAT SOMETHING.

Also, I think you twisted your dress around backward when you were in the bathroom.

Take this cream cheese bearclaw and go back in there and yank it around to the front.

225. Scott

I think it looks rather sad and desperate. As well as ill-fitting.

226. Kate

I would pin it together so it wasn’t so low cut. I would change the shoes — lighter and airier. A colour couldn’t hurt either.

And did she smackdown Linda Evans for this dress? WTF is up with those massive shoulder pads?

227. Jamie

NO SHOULDER PADS. NOT EVER. NOT EVER EVER AGAIN. Did we not learn this in the 80′s?

Ilove the sleeves and the bottom half of the dress. I like the drapiness of the front but I would like a wee bit more coverage. It looks like they forgot to do a little sewing – the fit’s just too baggy there. I am a small-chested woman and love dresses with cowl-type fits and the drapy front to flatter, but this doesn’t flatter well enough to justify the dare she has to wear it. I wouldn’t button it up completely – I would just close it up to about the nipples, even a bit lower, but not at the navel. RACHEL – NOT THE NAVEL!

228. Jamie

And I don’t like the shoes either. I think a fun shoe, maybe a peep toe or something – in a more fun color, red or magenta or purpley or silver – anything but black.

229. Ricky

Uh, this is about a lot more than color – it would be greatly improved in another color where you could not see the outline of the shoulder pads – but the far greater issue is the tailoring or lack of – what is going on with the sleeves and the hem – if you are going to dress like the ingenue from an 80s television drama – understand that Nolan Miller made sure those clothes fit – there are rules – and the neckline goes just too far – we all know the magic of double-sided tape – we do not need a demonstration – the rule is simple – use double-sided tape to prevent an accident should you move too suddenly or there is a gust of wind – if it has to be used, as is the case here, to hold the dress in place while standing perfectly still – then what is called for is a better cut and not double-sided tape.

230. Jocelyn

From the neck up, Hilary Duff. From the neck down, Cate Blanchett. I love me some Rachel McAdams, but not when she’s pretending to be some weird, scary hybrid.

231. Amy

UGH. Scrap it. Waaaay too Moonlighting/Dallas. Anyway, what’s the point in showing off all that sternum?

232. Stefani

Bad, Rachel. Bad.

233. Beth @ CrossBorderCravings

I think she looks gorgeous! No clue why. I’m sure ANYONE else wearing this would look derranged.

234. J-rob

i think i would be deeply in love if it were in a navy. like that hilary swank oscar dress.. too obvious?? i would even approve of keeping the shoes with that.

235. Emily

Neckline to navel? Combined with shoulder pads? It reminds me of one of my grandmothers sport coats, gone horribly wrong.

236. cmb

um, it makes her look like she has NO bazongas, on the order of gwyneth paltrow (who, when i reviewed shakespeare in love for my conservative family, said did some topless scenes but as she’s totally flat they don’t count). and definitely backwards. and color would NOT save it. the shoes also suck.

237. Nico

It looks like her head has spun 180 degrees around – like in ‘Death Becomes Her’! Yikes!

238. sprylie

She’s rivaling madonna for scary muscularature-well, no, she’s not muscle-y, but all those lines of sternum and rib–it’s over-exposed-scary, kind of more “prepped for autopsy” than sexy. Or maybe it’s the “I’m gonna eat you” expression on her face that reminds me of madonna, or a zombie, or a pre-zombie on the autopsy table person. Anyway, it’s not working, quite, is it?

239. Bill

She skinny, yes. I feel like agreely with all points (5) of the original. Give her credit- have we ever seen her show more?

240. jj

I think she looks fab, her make up is perfect and she is rockin that dress. I think the white is beautiful and drapery is hot. It’s sexy without being too much. She is stunning.

241. Rachael

I think I would like this is her legs weren’t a different color than her chest.

242. Samantha

Chop those sleeves off and close up the neckline a little bit more, maybe an inch or so on each side. Then either make it a color (purple maybe? blue?) or make the shoes and accessories a color.

243. Rania

I think she looks gorgeous. Plus, she’s so talented. If anyone can pull this look off, it is her. I just love her. She is so charming in interviews, and always makes great movies. I can’t be mad at Rachel.

But if you put this on a celebrity I hate, I will only come up with more reasons to hate them.

244. Snarkula

Lose the shoulder pads, in fact lose the sleeves altogether. Get some champagne colored strappy heels, do the dress in pale peach. Less decolletege, like way less, naked sternum is so not alluring. Or the dress, with less chest, in a poppy red with champagne sandals. Hair’s ok.

245. SuSu

How about a couple of quick stitches so we don’t have to see her sternum and ribs? Add silver sandals and chandlier-style silver earrings…so easy to get to great! Those shoes look like she wore them right through last winter and hasn’t bothered to get another pair.

246. Ling

Ironically enough, despite the boob acreage, it is a classy dress. So much so that the knee lengthitude makes it look rather old lady/old school. I think she should lop off the bottom inches and give up the toga draping because it looks uncomfortable. Maybe a sleeker ‘do. And gold statement pumps.

247. Mary

It has way too much going on: the sling drape, the hem, the shoulder pads, the drapey cuffs on the sleeves. If you’re going to show your whole chest, then the rest of the dress shouldn’t compete with that. Plus her hair looks like she just came from the corporate office and her legs look like a tennis player’s. Conclusion: she wanted to be risque, but she and her stylist had no idea how to pull it off.

248. cat

I love it the way it is, sleek, simple, sexy withou being trashy. I might have changed the shoes for a pair of golden sandals, maybe.

249. Ghanimtrix

When I first looked at this, I thought she was standing facing the other way with her head twisted all the way around. What’s the point of cleavage when you don’t have any cleavage to speak of?

250. ceegee

the dress might be okay if:
-it were red
-she had different shoes without that creepy toe cleavage – either show the toes or don’t, but make a decision
-she were sharon stone

251. Anonymous

She looks beautiful. Maybe change the color to cream, lose the shoulder pads and change the shoe color to deep red. but either way, she looks hot.

252. Bee

Hmmm … curious one. It *does* appear to look backwards, the colour washes her out (or her colouring doesn’t “work” with the dress); the shoes are a bore, the hair is — er — not great, the shoulder pads are hideous AND it’s all a bit slutty. And as you Fug Girls always say: “Eat a SANDWICH.”

253. srebra

It just sucks. That’s all I can say.

254. Boots

But, I sort of love her hair, all big loose curls. She’s so darn pretty, she can do just about anything. This is ill-advised, but she pulls it off better than anyone else I can think of could.

255. PJ

Can we talk about the shoulder pads? I think that makes it worse. But I agree, it looks like it’s on backwards.

256. Anonymous

It looks like it’s backwards. Shoe wise she’s sort of stuck, if she wears a lighter color shoe it’s a little to bride party so maybe the whole ensemble needs to be a different color

257. SFrances

That, my friends, is backwards.

258. Elaine

AAACCKK!!! I am SO afraid of the pointy toes on those shoes! Put them away (i.e., throw them away) and put on some footwear that doesn’t make me think you’re about to slice and dice a la crouching tiger hidden dragon.

As for the dress, pick a color, any color. i think I’d rather see you in a cool tone rather than a warm one, but either is better than the wash-out you’re wearing. Then find a nice tailor (I can recommend one dear) to move the wrap line up about 5 inches and you’re done.

Jewelry is nice sweetie, but it’s definitely #3 in the priority list. Do the first two, and then let’s talk.

259. bonho

No, it’s trying to be too many things at once. The shoulder pads don’t work with the decolletage, which doesn’t work with the sleeves, which doesn’t work with the skirt.

It might be better if it were sleeveless. And red. But then, it’s not the same dress.

260. Anonymous

I’m with Jess- LOVE it!

261. Selina

This is clearly an homage to Celine Dion’s infamous white tux. Genius.

262. ClaudesMom

A metallic color — copper would be great with her hair! — would be such an improvement. Red is kind of cliche, IMHO. Shoulder pads — somehow they accentuate the lack of boobage (an observation, not a criticism). I’m not fond of the bare chest. At least add something like a long string of pearls or colorful baubles. Yeah — it can work. With our help.

263. Emily

If she lost the boxy square shoulders it would be 100x better! I don’t mind the color, she looks stunning. She needs to think more youth, less Dynasty

264. Mellie

I’m LMAO at all these comments. Fug Girls, now that we’ve shown we can play nice, how about comments for all the posts? Pweeeeeese?

Go go gadget shoulder pads! Seriously, the hell? Is this where you store your extra maxi pads when your purse is too small to hold them? This is why tampons are best, ladies.

I think a sea-green would look better. Slice off those sleeves and throw them back to 1987. Put down the shoulder pads down and back away slowly. Burn the office shoes and go for some pink open-toe stilettos. I can deal with the neckline, but at least paint on some cleave or something. Finally, giant earrings, preferably silver. Giant silver earrings make any outfit better. You heard me.

265. PetuniasMama

I think it would be better in a color other than white. It is a bit too Celine Dionish even without a hat.

266. L

1. Remove the shoulder pads. No good can come from shoulder pads.
2. Shorten the sleeves to 3/4 length, at longest.
3. Maybe make the neckline less wide, although this isn’t a requirement for me.
4. Get some tall, strappy, open-toed stilettos.
5. Enjoy.

267. Milly

It’s terrible. You’re kidding yourself. I think she looks just about as bad as she can possibly look, here. Scrap the shoes and everything else except her (usually) lovely face because this is the sort of outfit that’s meant for the END of a starlet’s rags-to-riches-to-slightly-more-comfortable-rags journey, not for the middle of the beginning. Did that make sense? Probably not, but it makes more sense than this terrible dress/makeup/hair/shoes quadruple threat. Maybe she should hire a stylist who isn’t waiting in the wings, gleefully rubbing his hands together, while he mentally plans his “I Ruined Rachel McAdams” party.

268. Jennie

You are guys are totally off base. There’s nothing wrong with this look.

269. Anonymous

if it were in a metallic colour she would look like a bad villain from Dynasty.

I hate the shimmer these stars apply between the cleavage – it makes her look like a weight lifting porn star.

270. J

Just having her chest the same tan color as her legs would make the dress look hot. As it is, you can’t really tell you are seeing so much skin, because it blends with the color of the dress.

271. Alixandra

The dress has a Dynasty feel about it, the ruching and the shoulders. I think she really carries it off. She needs to 86 those shoes though – didnt she look in a mirror?? One glance is all you need to realise that the shoes and dress should have a LONG distance relationship.

272. Jess

Does anyone else think that it looks like she’s dieted away all her woman-ness? Maybe that’s why so many people think it looks like she’s wearing the dress backwards. I mean, I know she was always thin, but she’s verging on scary-thin here.

PS Is it ironic that she’s the one in ‘Mean Girls’ who complains about her “man shoulders”, and then goes out wearing such prominent shoulder pads??!

273. Liz

I think she’s too short for a neckline that low, it makes her top half look much longer than her bottom half, she’s entered stumpy ville. On someone 6 foot tall, I bet it would look fantastic. Change the shoes to something metallic, peep toe and platform, and move the neck line up to just show cleavage. Not loving the shoulderpads either, I don’t think she needs them.

274. kate

a deep green and its a winner, at the moment plain fug.

275. AJ

Girlfriend needs to eat.

276. meg

what’s bothering me is that her knees seem to be following me around the room. just plain scary! cover them up – or maybe eat a sandwich or two.

277. charlotte

If most people were wearing this, fug city. possibly would question if it was lycra and from one of those stores that are always closing down and then reopening to sell the same tacky lycra slut-costumes.

However, Rachel mcadams in this = superfly. She looks AMAZING. jealous.

Jessica: the third, fourth and fifth hands were hilarious. Especially your third.

278. charlotte

Although, this should’ve been a poll

279. Heather

Oh no. No no no.

1) The color (or lack thereof). No!

2) The shoulderpads. NO.

3) The hair. Nein.

4) The shoes (with that dress). Nein again.

5) The extremely unsettling resemblance of her chest to my boyfriend’s. Maybe it’s the camera angle, but it’s hard to tell if she has breasts, or has just been working really hard on her pecs.

In short, my tips: Eat a sandwich. Look into color. Ditch the hairspray.

P.S. I love The Fug Girls :)

280. Catherine

Rachel McAdams, you are adorable. I love you. This dress is awful. Please find something else. Thank you.

Love, Catherine

281. Claudia

Us in London (it’s friday lunchtime in the office BTW) think that the fabric looks so cheap that it would continue to look nasty whatever the colour. I can’t really concentrate anyway to tell you the truth ‘cos the poster behind her is creeping me out with the double head/ dreamy look x2 effect it’s creating.

Also thank you shrewd fugette for the ‘little titty committee’ – I have had to put up with them my whole life. I knew they existed!

282. ivanna

I think it would look better if the color of her torso matched the color of her legs and hands.

283. scissorkitty

Does no one else notice that she’s morphing into Hillary Duff right before our eyes? Seriously. Check out the Duffness up there.

284. Emma H

OK, if there were some kind of panel in a very luxurious fabric, maybe semi-sheer, maybe a deep emerald, to cover this kind of appalling frontal exposure I would love it. The shoulders are great. Wouldn’t mind changing the color of the shoes either, but that’s neither here nor there when we’re talking about a very bony, significantly-paler-than-the-rest-of-her TORSO that is on display. Surprised how well she’s pulling off the white! I think it’s that fabulous hair color. So close, McAdams!

And yes, she is definitely morphing into Hillary Duff

285. stephie

I agree that this is definitely what Joan Collins would wear to a toga party. However, I do not think that’s a bad thing at all.

Emerald Green or Cobalt Blue would like nice on the dress, or switch the shoes out for Red maybe, but those things are not necessary. McAdams needs exactly two things to totally pull this off: a Tan and a Sandwich.

286. Rebecca

She looks beautiful! I love how the bright sheen of the dress accentuates her incredible skin. Also, let’s hear it for a torso that could easily pass for a sculpture!

287. Sweetsinger

What is it with starlets who think that they must show off their underfed sternums so prominently? Joan Collins herself would never wear something as awful as this, even if it were an excuse to insert superfluous shoulder pads.
A more proportional neckline can gracefully accent the Ladies without embarrassing anyone (like all the men in the room), and then she could lose the shoulder pads.
Also, need color–white is too harsh for her–and shoes that look like she’s out for the evening, not going to work.

288. Jane B.

I think that a tall and skinny girl could have rocked that dress in any given colour.

In my opinion here the problem is that it makes her look short and underlines her hips too much.

It kind of explains the shoulderpads (if ever you can explain these horrors!).

The shoes were a bad idea too, too dark too closed. A pair of off white/light beige or light pink sandals maybe?

I like her nude look, natural/healthy glow make up, minimal jewelery, it’s a pity the dress ruins it.

289. sparky

My only comment is that once a zillion people post their opinion that it should be in emerald green and lose the shoulder pads,
it’s no longer necessary to post your OWN comment re-iterating the same thing.
I’m just sayin…

290. melanie

it really does look like it’s backwards, and i think that’s because of her being so petite up top.
the whole wrap of the dress looks odd to me, the way the sleeves are long and pushed up at the ends and the way it wraps around from the waist down. it looks like she did a lot of tossing and turning and got tangled up in her top sheet.
the main problem i have with the shoulder pads is the fact that you can see them through the material of the dress.

291. Janice Marie

Not Lady Ga Ga – Thank you for giving me a much needed laugh. My soda actually came out of my nose. Well done.

Plus – I 100% agree. I can barely get through a Friends rerun without gagging at the site of Monica and Rachel’s sternums. Ick.

292. Deborah Lipp

Would God punish her if she wore a lovely silk cami in a bright color?

293. Inky Penumbra

The dress looks too roomy in the shoulders and…I’m not liking the sleeves. Too long maybe? And she’s too pale for bright white, I’d want more contrast. And strappy not-black shoes. Altogether too droopy.

294. yvetterene

I would change the color of the dress, take the shoulder pads out, and go for a different shoe. Possibly something strappy.

295. alabaster

I, personally, am a huge fan of a plunging neckline and flattering draping. HOWEVER – this kind of fails. There needs to be a more decisive center of gravity – I can totally tell where she put the tape. I think I like the white, but with a bright blue – like a cobalt – platform peep-toe. Maybe a bright pink. Just something with a platform – the shoe needs to make more of a statement.

Her makeup/hair looks awesome.

296. Gwendolyn

I think she looks really cute overall, BUT she is so fair-skinned that the white really washes her out. It does need a color. I think other folks were talking about jewel tones? That sounds good to me, but anything but white would be an improvement. (okay, maybe not flesh-toned…) Also different shoes, but if I were limited to one thing, I would dye the dress.

She is so pretty – I am jealous – especially of her skin. I am so glad that she doesn’t fake-bake!

297. mfarris70

80′s hooker wedding. Too much chest, not enough hair-do, the black shoes say “I’m naughty.” Yawn.

298. Deb

She is gorgeous!
Let’s fix the dress…
Change it to a plumy color, a matte filmy fabric, the plunge neckline should stop right on the decollete. Sternum shot not wanted. She had on some cute plum colored t-strap shoes the other morning on the Today show, looking mavalous too. Spice it up with some gold shimmery purse and jewels.
Where is yummy Eric Bana, he can Time Travel on over here!

299. Jerika

I think it’s a great dress, and she looks great in it. A slightly different color would probably work wonders though. Every time I saw it on television, I thought it was more of a nude, not white; I liked it a lot better then.

300. Eurydice

OMG, Karen! I had the same black suede dress, with the mega plungy drape in the back and the big shoulder pads – also bought in 1986.

And, whereas I looked bitchin’ in my black suede (as I’m sure you did, too), Rachel looks just a little bit uncomfortable and apologetic in her shiny, white whatever. And her matching sternum looks like the waxed and oily chest of a country western singer trying to impress his Australian film star wife.

301. poltergasm

incinerate the quadruple shoulder pads &

annihilate the shoes.

elsewise, she looks nice.

were i built like that [making double sided tape possibly unnecessary], i’d just wear it cut lower.

302. Sassy

Black or navy. Scrap the shoulder pads. Metallic strappy sandals.

303. Red

It should be extremely elegant but it’s not. I can’t quite tell why. I think any one of the following or possibly a combination of any of the following might work… a different colour, different shoes, a different length of skirt, shorter sleeves and fewer shoulder pads. She looks fantastic but somehow the outfit just misses being completely phenomenal…

304. Laurrrrrra

Uh, what? Let’s do the math.

beautiful girl
+ pretty hair color
- hairdo straight from the Bold and the Beautiful, circa 1987.
- shoulder pads ALSO from the Bold and the Beautiful, circa 1987.
- blindingly shiny breastbone
- weird man-chest due to boobs being shoved carelessly to either side
- oh my GAWD EAT A CHEESEBURGER
+ cute but slightly boring shoes
= I think we can safely say FUG.

305. Zeina

I think its all in the length of the sleeves..the way theyre covering her hands borders on sloppy, combined with the shoulder pads makes this out fit awkward. Removing the pads and adjusting the length of the sleeves and a less severe shoe would make all the difference in the world…

306. Erin

I think it would look better if she would eat a burger or a taco…or both.

307. Anonymous

there is something odd about her “chest”, like no cleavage whatsoever, that looks weird in itself.

308. Lili

I almost feel that because she is such a lovely person in general it doesn’t matter. Look at her face! So engaging!

309. Jennifer

I agree with your third, fourth and fifth hands: a color, different shoes and thank God for Hollywood Fashion Tape!!!

310. Phoebe

ditch the sleeves. that is all it needs. if it were sleeveless, it would be perfect!

311. kj

Face it, she looks good in anything, even this, and that ain’t easy.

312. KDB

Oh, no, this is bad, bad, bad. Wrong color, drapey in strange places, cleave-void … fug!

313. Ginger

I am so biased because of my love for Rachel but I love this outfit. Say what you like about the torso but she’s not Paris Hiltoning it up with a mini skirt (teamed with tongue down random Hills guys throat). I love a structured shoulder (I have HIPS dammit) and I love that she looks unstyled, just gorgeous and unwhory. Love.

314. Anonymous

It looks like her head has spun around. When I first saw this picture I thought of that shot in the movie Space balls where “Dark Helmets” head is on backwards.

315. Anonymous

Haven’t had a chance to read all the comments, but think the emerald green would be lovely, or really any jewel tone on her would be fabulous. The huge plunging neckline, though, screams “look at my boobies” which cheapens the effect. Did everyone spend the evening staring hoping for a cheap thrill? Is that what she really wants? She is so beautiful she doesn’t need to go that route. I do like the dress, but it needs a something holding the huge plunge together.

316. Blinded by the Sternum

“She looks like her heads on backwards.”

That is hilarious. She really does. Sternum does not = sexy.

317. nina

it’d look better without the shoulder pads i think., maybe without the sleeves too? i can’t really put my finger on it.

318. Pearl

Rachel McAdams is a very good actress and a lovely woman.

So why does she look so incredibly, hilariously awful?

a. dress (no, not the color alone but the color, fabric, style, existence)
b. blah shoes
c. Endora hair-do
d. lack of covering accesories–like a serape
e. facial expression that suggests she is the bomb.

My goodness! And she’s clearly got some firm little boobies there, too. But, dear, go home and cover them up/surround them with something less wretched.

319. ayla

I don’t mind it in white, though a color would be better. Lose the shoulder pads though, they should have stayed in the 80s where they belong.

Take up about an inch on the hem and put her in a strappy sandal, something metallic.

I don’t know what to do about her hair, though.

320. pab

I saw this in person and she looked like she was meeting up with Eliot Spitzer after the party.

321. jannette

The shoulder pads stick out too far past the edge of her shoulders. The neckline is too wide at the top, so the drape is awkward and too long. The sleeves are too long. The shoes are wrong wrong wrong. I’m not sold on the color but it’s fine. I guess.

Tailor it so that the shoulders are still sharp, but slightly narrower, and shorten the baby-sling part. That will make the neckline drape more naturally not droop so far. I like the covered-up arms with the dramatic cowl, but the sleeves need to be bracelet-length. Maybe a sleek chunky hematite/pewter color necklace. Ditch the toe cleavage and go with strappy pewter sandals. (I think pewter instead of gold– it would create enough contrast without going 100% Lynda Evans.)

322. kitty

first get over there and YANK OUT THOSE SHOULDER PADS. please. then hike up the hem a few inches because she’s got the legs and a dress of just one colour can be really imposing if there’s too much of it.
then a wave of my magic fairy wand (gotta get me one of those) and the whole thing turns a bright jewel tone – perhaps fuscia or bright teal or a deep purple – that really makes her pale skin glow.
another wave and accessories appear out of nowhere in the form of a long thin gold necklace (to draw attention away from her jutting collarbone and maybe-visible-ribs-but-i’m-not-sure-it-could-just-be-a-weird-shadow) and some chunky bangles in gold and a contrasting colour.
one sadistic jab of my wand at the feet (those sad, sad, black pointy things deserve no less) and they’re now shod in hmmmmmm either stylish, glamorous ankle boots (if such a beast exists) for a rocker edge or some graceful platform pumps in a plain contrasting colour (same as the bangles?).
i wouldn’t touch her makeup, and i think i get where her hair is trying to go, but i wish the hairdresser had set the ‘do a bit more – that fringe needs some spray and the left side is looking a bit frizzy.

xoxo happy fixing!

323. clementine

You think this is bad? Imagine if it was on Pamela Lee Anderson…Oh, the horror!

324. VA

Add a nice pendant-y type necklace, or a simple strand of pearls.

Make her chest not so pale that it almost matches the dress.

Have the dress be tinted, maybe in the realm of a lavender.

325. Melanie

A nice dark teal would look great with her auburny hair. And she should definitely ditch the shoulder pads. They make her look a little like the walking playing cards from “Alice in Wonderland.”

326. Lainie

I am with Whitney–way way up there ^^^^–don’t know why she’s flaunting the sternum. I think she should show more leg instead.

I really just never get those weird neck/sternumlines–but maybe that’s just because I’m a big-boobed girl who could never wear that at all.

Also, funner shoes are in order.

327. Alice

Corner cockroach-killer shoes plus blinding white 80s style dress = too severe. Green is in right now, and with her red hair it would be divine– let’s see the dress in a rich, matte forest green, with a thin drapey necklace (like an old-school lavaliere– adorably retro) to glorify the decolletage. She has such beautiful skin, and that swath of chest peeking out looks so empty. A long silver necklace, this dress in green, and round-toed heels (peep-toed ones would be smashing) in black or silver would make this truly glorious.

328. lef

Eh–she pulls it off, despite the shoes…just don’t look down. Besides, who else do you know that could pull this look off, really? Megan Whatshername? Please!

329. chloe bakerton

I think she’s channeling her new time traveling movie here by giving nods to: 1) Sharon Stone in that one movie, 2) J. Lo circa 1999, and 3) Joan Collins anytime.

330. Mel

She should have worn in backwards, except then we’d be force to look at her giving us an-over-the-shoulder-Renee-Z pose, and YAWN.

331. BunnyNZ

The dress I quite like; the shoes I can cope with (but I think they were a very poor choice); its the HAIR that’s breaking my heart. I mean, WTF? I once went for a ride in a convertible, having forgotten to brush my hair in the blurry aftermath of a hard night. I thought that was the ONLY WAY to make hair look this bad.

Clearly, I was wrong. She doesn’t look THAT hung-over.

332. LottiP

If you were told she’d just come from a new reality show (“Pimp My Sheet”) where contestants had to make a dress from a sheet in 15 minutes and THEN wear it to a premiere, you’d be thinking “oh, that’s a good job”. As a *real* dress: whose idea was that?

Another thing: is she wearing it backwards? Because that’s way more sternum than I really want to see.

333. thecatsmiaow

I agree, the black shoes and white clash terribly.
I don’t know…I think it is fug indeed. I have something against the long sleeves, scoop front – it is not unlike the shorts in winter with a scarf ensemble.

Blah.

p.s. I love your blog Heather and Jessica!

334. Rob

Um, hello? She just looks full-on AWESOME.

335. Aysha

Somebody already said it and I second that: she looks so cute, that she is more or less pulling this off, but on anybody else: this dress is horrid!
Why not loose it alltogether and replace it with something less needy of double-sided tape and without visible shoulderpads. The color can stay btw.

336. gryt

No way was that dress meant to fit like that. It’s too big/her body type is wrong for it/it’s badly cut. Maybe all three.

337. AlyT

I actually like this look. I think the problem is the angle of the photo. It seems like the photographer was super tall, so the downward angle is making her look somewhat stumpy, and making her feet look too small. I think this might be totally fab from a different angle. However, its possible that those shoes really are completely wrong for the dress. So change the camera angle, and maybe change the shoes to something strappy. But hey – kudos to her for trying something fashion-forward and not cookie cutter.

A lot of the comments here (and on previous entries) are tips to make her look more generic. It seems like some of you want every celeb to wear basically the same thing to every event. How boring.

338. Emily

Maybe if her chest didn’t look so sweaty.

339. wishcake

Shoulder pads? REALLY? Really. I judge anyone who wears shoulder pads in this day and age, especially when they are young, pocket-sized and adorable.

However, if this dress were in emerald green, I may be able to overlook the shoulder pad thing. Maybe. But don’t quote me on that.

340. brooke

her skin gets whiter as you head down toward the belly button and i don’t find that attractive. if you’re going to be showing a bunch of skin, shouldn’t it all be the same color? also, the shoulder pads are atroshe. i like the idea, but not the execution.

341. Stylistwannabe

I think the shoulder pads with the soft folds don’t work at all. She’s a lovely woman who’s trying to make the look work but it just doesn’t pass muster. And, the shoes are simply wrong.

342. Sara M

Rachel McAdams? What a disappointment. Never thought that I’d get away from all the stories on what a fresh breath of air she was in scrawny Hollywood. Now a few years later and she’s maybe five pounds away from Keira Knightley territory. Anyone remember her sassy purple dress at the Mean Girls premiere? She had a nice set of breasts then.

a) She needs a hair stylist. The cut is wrong, and the style is awful. I think you shouldn’t sweep your bangs off to the side unless they’re generally well-behaved because then they piece apart over your forehead, the way your bangs do when you’re sweaty. Looks unkempt.

b) Shoulder pads, really?

c) If the dress were darker she’d look whiter. The color isn’t the problem (though a champagne color would’ve been nice), the draping is. That dress needs to be tailored. When you can actually see exactly where the double-sided taping is there is a problem.

d) I think open-toe shoes would look tacky with this dress. The shoes are fine, they just needs to be in a different color.

343. Hammurabi

I sincerely thought her head was completely turned around! She looks straight out of the excorsist!

344. one

it’s awful – the only way to wear that thing is to have it taped to your body, which it obviously is.

it’s an excellent example of “do you wear the dress or does the dress wear you?”

345. Erin

The shoes are terrible, the sleeves are too long and the shoulder pads have got to go. Other than that, I actually kind of like it.

346. Yancey

Beige dress of the same cut (love the plunge), open-toed metallic gold shoes, and a more-defined up-do (love the darker hair). Then she would have looked like a goddess.

347. sharon

she’s gorgeous.

348. xD

The chest area is seriously disturbing. It seriously screams she-male!!! Even that 80′s hairdo, visible shoulderpads and weird shoes can’t compete the total fugliness of her (I guess it’s her, right…?) upper torso.

349. Kat

This is DEFINITELY too low…her chest is way too pale to pull this off. The draping is cute, but I would raise the neckline to a more respectable height, take out the shoulder pads, and add peeptoes.

350. kristy

ugly ugly ugly.
shoulder pads a no no especially in a white dress.
neck like yuck!
this dress is good for the bin.

351. Anonymous

Truthfully? I think RMcA is absolutely stunning, however this makes her look like a 10 year old who has raided her mother’s wardrobe, her mother being Sue Ellen Ewing, or maybe even Heidi Klum. Yes, I think both of those ladies could pull this dress off.

Rachel however, sadly, cannot. The colour is wrong. The shape is wrong. The hair is wrong. It does nothing for her cleavage. Not sexy.

Just goes to show that it doesn’t matter how gorgeous you are, you still need to choose the right style for your body shape…

I feel better now…

352. emily

i love it all apart from the heinous shoes. they’re a terrible throwback to the early noughties – an era not so far gone that it can be revisited just yet.

353. MAmanda

I hate it. It makes her look like she got frozen at the end of some wild ’80s party and unfrozen minutes before showing up to this function with little time to freshen up her hair. The only thing saving her from looking like a complete wreck is that she is just so darn pretty. Rachel is so much better than shoulder pads and necklines that show off her ribcage.

354. Nitzana

355. v

love the dress… HATE it with those shoes.
something strappy…. whimsical… blue? red? gold? something… but not the black pumps i keep under my desk at the office… please!

356. Farmer Waltz

There are shoulder pads. It’s too big, blousy and it looks like the table cloth at a wedding reception. The right part is hanging onto her clavicle for dear life, thanks to a generous amount of double-sided tape. Did she and Angelina Jolie trade outfits before they arrived, and Jolie is walking around at a Inglourious Basterds premiere somewhere with a nice strapless number and elegant, but summery sandals?

357. Erinn

She should be called Rachel Mcwhitey. The colour is WRONG it totally washes her out. The tape is a bit off aswell. Ahh and the shoes.. yes it needed a bit of strap action I think.

358. paula

I’d yank out the VERY VISIBLE shoulder pads (is vintage early 80s making a comeback, btw?)

I think the dress is backwards- if not I’d turn it around anyway.

Make the sleeves short.

I’d make the dress black.

Put her in more comfortable, yet sexier shoes. She looks like she is in pain.

359. sarah

I think she could have done a unique take on jewelry with a medium sized gold chain that clipped on either side of the v-neck about half way down. Looking at her makes me nervous that I’m about to make eye contact with Nipple McAdams, so I’m having a hard time appreciating the actual dress…which I also think would be much improved had she chosen a different shoe..something taller, golder, strappier and more covered in jewels. OR were she commited to the minimalist approach, she really should have just worn it backwards..rather, opposite of the way she wore it.

360. kirsty

i think that if she put on some weight she’s look HOT

361. Kiki

Dye it a deep blue or red, turn it around (as the skirt appears to be doing already…) and take out the shoulder pads! Then add some cuter and more interesting shoes. Even with all these changes, it’s still rather MEH, but hopefully would reek less of evil 80′s soap star and more of 2005 Oscars Hillary Swank.

362. Caren

White fabric and shoulder pads! Doesn’t anyone EVER learn!?

363. MadMooby

I just have never cared for the exposed breastplate style to begin with. It seems to accentuate what is generally missing (boobs, of course) and really, isn’t this whole look very 1989? I love McAdams, but she looks like she could take her hair down and be on-set of a Slaughter video.

364. andrea

It seems that with that much white/skin, there need to be some sort of balance on top – perhaps someone with longer hair (or is her hair long now and just up?) but some length on top so that it’s a look and not just a dress with a head.

also – definitely agree with the comments about better shoes and those about a jewel tone color instead of white. being a pale girl myself, I’m painfully aware of the catastrophe that could ensue when we wear that much white and show that much skin –> blah

Just wondering if eBay permits you to sell concert tickets on the web? Do you know if you’ll find any restrictions based on what country you are in?

My parents have just called me and asked if i could “get rid” of their two tickets to some concert as they wont be able to make it because of yet another family event.

Apart from asking friends etc, i thought ebay would be an excellent place to sell them.

But whats ebay’s policy on selling tickets? Ive heard alot about it around the news but ive forgotten what happened.

and if it matters, the concert is inside of this coming month

Thanks in advance for your advice.
