A couple of months ago, Ms Rose Byrne here mentioned us in Harper’s Bazaar (not by name, of course, but I knew it was us because we’re the only couple of snarky bloggers who’ve expressed concern about her emotional health — because WE CARE, duh), and noted that she is NOT depressed, despite her wan mien in photos, but merely nervous. So I was pleased to see this:

Hmmm. I love black sequins as much as the next girl — wait, that’s a lie. I love black sequins MORE than the next girl. I was in Vegas this past weekend and getting to wear my black sequined cocktail dress was one of the highlights. I’d wear that thing every day if I could. So I am FEELING her on the sequins. However, there’s something about this that feels vaguely Formal Girl Scout Uniform. All she needs are some merit badges to pin to the bodice: she’s surely earned her Red Carpet badge, as well as her Shiny Hair badge, the Glenn Close Staredown badge — very coveted, that one — and the Embrace of Tights badge. But I suspect Formal Girl Scout may not have been what Rose was going for. The question, as always, is: can this relationship (with her outfit) be saved? How would you do it? GET TO WORK!

Is it a two piece? It looks like it’s tucked in. Make it a one-piece and lose the sheer sleeve thingies and the tights and I might be a fan.

I actually like the bodice. It’s sheer but safely nipple-covering (always a concern now the nights are getting colder). I like the gathering at the waist. I think it shows off just how slender she is.
I like the tights too. I myself am almost religious about my black opaques in the winter. And she’s got the perfect sheer/not-too-sheer denier down as well, so kudos on that.
I just don’t heart the skirt. I thought it may have been a jumpsuit at first, that’s how little I heart it. A gently flaring black silk just-above the knee affair would be darling, and a good contrast to the bodice.
Whatever. I’m off to invest in a large tub of hair mayonnaise so that one day my do might just be that shiny.
If you would simply let her borrow YOUR shiny sequinned black cocktail dress, she would surely look more cheerful.

Anyway, I say replace all the areas where there is sheer material here with black sequins. I wouldn’t even mind if it resulted in little cap sleeves (so you might have to trim an inch or two off). Do that, keep the tights, add some shoes with some va-va-voom and voila. An outfit as pretty as Rose herself.
If you take away the netting sleeves and fill in the netting triangle below her crossed sequins – with MORE sequins, that would look a thousand times better. It would look more like a spangly halter dress rather than some sort of restraint device. She has no side-boobs to speak of, so modesty will still be preserved.
I think she did have the potential to pull this off… if she didn’t look so uncomfortable, as if she was, at any second, ready to bolt and burst into tears.

I think the problem is that the sheer part is baggy like a t-shirt. It needs to be fitted like, well, like a leotard, and it would be fine. If the sleeves were long. Or gone.

I am so off-put by the way the top appears to be tucked into the skirt that I can’t even look at the rest of the outfit. Is that an ELASTIC waistband??? Find way way to fix that (like make the bodice more fitted and attach it more seamlessly to the skirt) and I wouldn’t even mind the weird criss-cross thing.

The top screams formal crossing guard — could it be on backwards? Maybe that’s why she looks so scared, because someone could call her out on it at any minute. If the skirt sat lower on her hips the blousing effect might be less, and if the back of the top is solid sequins then the front might make a cute back. I agree, Rose, it is confusing to get dressed!

Which brings us to the sheet fabric. As others have said before me, fill that area in with sequins and she’d be good. No sleeves, no X, just a basic, slender, sparkly dress.
I have no problem with the tights. It’s the right season and they look fine, especially with a skirt that short. And, face it, she COULD have worn WHITE ones and sent us all screaming into the night.

I really don’t understand why these mini-celebs think that if they dress a particular way it will change anything about how they come across, while they keep the same exact demeanor as if they were shuffling out of the house in flannel pajamas and bunny slippers. They need to wear the clothes with confidence and panache or they may as well not bother at all.

I don’t think that any girl, no matter how shiny her hair is, can pull off cross-your-heart sequin straps over a transparent black blouse. Ditch the top half of this whole ensemble (regardless of whether it’s a onesie or not), so that it’s a skirt (or are they black sequin formal shorts?) and a sexy top. She looks nice in head-to-toe black, so I wouldn’t even insist that the top have color.

I would dress it down a bit by adding a short sleeved, black cashmere crewneck sweater. Then again, I am pretty scared of sequins.
I’m not crazy about sheer and sequins together like this, but it’s not terrible. Something else is bothering me about this, though and it’s the fact that it makes her look entirely flat chested. I’m not saying that one should be all cleavagy all the time or wear things to overly define the girls, but she looks almost boyish in this.

The only thing I would do is fill in that stomach patch. Aside from that I actually love it.
IF that is indeed a skirt, then for my money we need to change the sheer panel to an opaque, matte fabric for a lil contrast; lose the tights (in fact, burn ‘em); lose the sheer undershirt thingie; add some shoes with a little excitement as those are making me fall….aslee…zzzzzz. Burn those boring shoes with the tights.

I was starting to think I was crazy for liking this, but I absolutely do. She looks demure yet sexy, put together yet relaxed. The tights are just the right amount of sheer. Maybe the shoes could be a tad blingier but they’re classic. I don’t think she looks cowed, she looks calm and mysterious. No one looks at the Mona Lisa and says, come on, give us a big smile. Let Rose be Rose.

I agree with getting rid of the sheer mid-section. Beyond that, I like it. It fits with the current trends (vaguely geometric, also sparkly)
And secondly, this one’s for the “Fug Girls”: Miss Byrne is not the only one. She and I share the same affliction; I, too, always manage to photograph looking like a fragile and tragic waif from a Dickens novel who is just on the verge of tears. (I could offer so much proof of this.) And I am not a tragic or depressed person in the slightest!
