I think it’s just bad makeup. LOVE the dress, though.
Bad hair, bad make up. When you’re as lovely as Charlize, WHY would you schlop and glop all over your face??
Her face does look both narrower (through the cheeks) and puffier (around the eyes and mouth). That could explained by weight loss and then no sleep or medication or a lot of different things. There’s definitely something going on – she doesn’t look completely healthy.
I hate when people wear their eyeshadow that dark over the corner of their eye. It works to create drama on the runway in fun colors, but in real-world applications, I think it just make Charlize look tired. And kind of… drunk? I don’t know.
Great dress, though.
I will take the black background of some of the super busy ones. As the ladies have said, it is some bad (super heavy) makeup.
Her eye shadow is an unflattering color and it goes so far into the corner of her eye that it is threatening to meet on the bridge of her nose. Even Charlize cannot pull off Star Trek make-up, it seems.

Clothes, shoes and clutch look great, I would totally wear this look, except I’d swap the big watch for a black or metallic cuff bracelet. She just went overboard on the makeup and didn’t even try with the hair.
Gotta agree it’s not great head-wise with the wonky hair and makeup, but from the neck down she looks her usual gorgeous self. I like the fluffiness of the dress with the clean lines of the blazer.
Bad makeup, especially the lip. She looks like she’s doing what I used to do in the mid-90s — dark liner around the outline of the lips, filled in with a frosty pink lipstick. (I pulled it off, dammit!) The eye makeup isn’t helping, but those lips…man, that’s gotta go.
The dark eye shadow on the inner part of the socket + 90′s lipliner is definitely causing some facial wonkification.
The black background and black blazer make her look like a floating head. I think that’s contributing to the confusion here.

Having said that, from the neck down, it's all good. Agree that a) fluffy dress + clean-lined blazer = win and b) that watch would be serving better as a cuff bracelet.
It’s the god awful over bleached frizzed out hair (a case of the Heigl hair perhaps?). And the lip injections. Other than that, gorgeous! I’d kill for those legs!

I think I’m going to go against the general public and say that I think she’s just aging. She a year older! She’s still WAY more beautiful that she has the right to be, but I do think that her face is just showing signs of aging. Don’t think she’s got work done…yet.
It’s not just makeup. It looks like there’s something weird going on around her lips, like she got fillers or botox gone wrong or something. Add to that the fact that her eyes have a perpetually glazed look and it all looks like she’s melting.

I am thinking lip plumpers, although you can’t actually see the injection sites as with Ms. Kidman below. But that eye shadow is SO horrid. Just — bad. And the hair isn’t helping.
It’s the bad hair and the heavy runway makeup, including roast beef lips (dark outside, pink interior) and all the forehead botox. And the feather dress with a tuxedo jacket. Her dress is made of Steven Tyler’s hair.

Is the general consensus that it was her eye-makeup? Because she looks like a very muted clown. Which is really unfortunate, because she’s gorgeous.
I think it’s the intensification of the black backdrop that is creating the problem. That makeup might be reasonable in front of something bright or white, where you need that intensity to not look washed out. And I think she just doesn’t look relaxed, not like she got anything done or plumped. Her face was always rather stiff looking, imo. The hair isn’t helping. What is with the frizzies and free-floating bangs this season? Awful!
Yep, botox and fillers. There was another recent photo of her in the airport and it was just as obvious and she didn’t have this make-up on. So, it’s not the make-up.

1. the heavy brown eyeshadow starting so high up and so far in.
2. collagen injections, esp around her mouth.
3. the blush is applied in an odd place on her cheeks, so it makes her face shape look a little off.
4. dark peach blush and palest pink lips.
5. botox in the forehead.
Dark tones create depth, pale tones create fullness, and here the dark eyes make her look squinty and the pale lips make her look even more beestung than she actually is. And I agree, she hardly looks like herself at all. Not good.
i often think APS is making stuff up. but in this case, i think not. i think GF has had recent lip filler at least.

The makeup, horrific. It looks like a sunset exploded on her face. The hair, limp and uninspired. The dress and blazer? tres magnifique. Step up your hair and face game, Charlize! You are way too beautiful for this.
Her eye makeup reminds me of high school when we all thought that brown eye shadow would give you a more ‘natural’ look. Unfortunately, none of us knew how to apply it, so we ended up looking like we had severe pigment discolouration on our eyelids.
She also needs a leeeetle bit more colour on the lips. Not a lot, but just a bit. Maybe if her lips are a bit artificially puffy, she thought the more neutral colour would make them seem less weird.
You know someone’s got on the wrong color blush when you look at a picture and say “hey, she’s wearing blush”. It’s bad. And I hope she hasn’t gone Duck Lips on us. It’s so unattractive; why do people do that? Especially people who are as naturally gorgeous as Charlize Theron.
If by “work,” Fug Girls, you mean scalpel work, I’m sure you’re right. But take it from someone the same age as Ms. Theron: she has Botox (WAY too much) in her forehead and probably at the crow’s feet, and a filler in her nasolabial folds and most likely in her lips. She looks weird because she’s overfilled and over-frozen.

What a beauty. It’s obviously makeup people. She hasn’t had work done. Why isn’t whenever someone is photographed wearing a lot of glossy makeup people assume it’s botox? I just saw a candid recently and she didn’t look like she had any work done whatsoever, she looked like she was aging naturally and beautifully. I think she looks good with dark eyeliner but it’s just too much blush. The makeup artist applied too much because he said he wanted to go for a dramatic look so the white dress wouldnt’ be washed out.
I think it’s the shadow and the inner liner. And some lip plumping? She looks like Sophie Monk. Not keen on that assymetrical hair either. The long bit looks too ratty.

Whether it is makeup or something more permanent, why oh why do these insanely gorgeous women feel they need to do things to their faces??? All I can think of are those pictures from earlier today of Ali Carter with minimal makeup and a fabulous smile. When you are blessed with those genes, you don’t need to do more!
I think it has to do with the way the brown shadow is over-extended towards her nose plus the fact that she seems to be only wearing one colour of eye shadow. I can’t even imagine what her make-up artist was thinking when they did her eye shadow…so weird!
I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she looks like she’s taken too many cold and flu tablets. You never know – she could have just been having a bad day. Her hair certainly looks like she just climbed out of bed with a care factor of ‘where’s-my-chicken-soup’.

I think the black backdrop, her hair pulled back, and the shadow under her (very nice) jawline giver he kind of a disembodied floating head look.

Hate to break it to you but I think she’s had work done. I was suspicious of her face when she advertised for Uniqlo, it’s the top of the nose, botox makes everyone look like vampires Buffy with this weird smooth puffy bridge. Of course she’s had work done, they’re all at it.

Ah Charlize I feel for you. You are doing the exact same half-hearted smile that I always manage to do in pictures cause I get akward and think just keeping my mouth shut is easiest, but also want to appear a little friendly. I have a perfectly normal pretty face (even been approached by modelling agencies quite a few times until they found out about my wonky picture face:-) and in all pics my face looks like Charlize’s… Come to me sista and we will open up a business for pretty girls with wonky picture faces. I am sure there is a market for that somewhere (hey wait – you don’t seem to be needing any help with the business thing so I’ll just back off, but if you ever land on the bottom look me up. It could be magic).

I confess, I’ve always thought she had a weird face (over-plucked brows, pinched nostrils, pursed grin), so she looks pretty typical to me.
I am distracted, however, by those frizzy hair chunks on each side of her head. Girl looks best with her hair down; why is she always trying vintage-y finger waves?
I think she’s definitely had something done to the lower half of her face – something seems really tight around her mouth and jaw, and her cheeks are a totally different shape from what they used to be. But also, the way her dark eye makeup extends into the inner corners of her eyes is really unflattering – it makes her eyes look almost sunken, and makes her look really tired. She’s starting to look a little older, but, really, she just needs a better makeup artist.

i think it’s the terrible intersection of Badly Applied Makeup Drive and Unflattering Limp Haircut Lane. the eyebrows are very thin and harsh, the shadow is rather haphazard, and the lips and cheeks are fighting each other. (not that they have to match but they’re not helping each other out this way.)
Probably she’s ventured out into public while still in the recovery period after plastic surgery.

Yeah, of course she’s getting older, but except for the lips, she mostly looks like herself–which is 9 parts gorgeous and 1 part a little weird. But I remember her lips being pretty full, so what I’d say is I don’t understand why you would paint up your lips to look like they’re still reeling from being pumped full of plasticky-hormony gel junk.

The hair is AWFUL, but I think it’s mostly the makeup to blame here. Whoever applied that eyeshadow should be ritually beaten. I’m on the fence about the lips…maybe it’s a bit of filler? Or maybe it’s the makeup (again) and/or lighting and/or the angle?

She definitely had some kind of plastic surgery – maybe fillers? in her face. She doesn’t even look like herself. Her face used to be round with cheekbones. Here is just looks so full and puffy. Charlize has always worn heavy eye make-up – back when she won that award – like ’02 I think for the serial killer, she had red-orange eye make-up and girl still looked fabulous!
