I know it’s not all bubblegum and bells and whistles, but I like this. In part because, with Katy Perry, sometimes craving bubblegum and bells and whistles turns into her ACTUALLY wearing a merry widow made only of bubblegum, bells, and/or whistles.
This is flattering, it’s graceful, it’s elegant, and it’s a take on see-through that doesn’t turn me into Ragey McCapsoholic. Plus, let’s face it, I’m sure it’s exhausting to live up to a high standard of CONSTANT sparkly nutballery all the time (even Lady Gaga seems bored of herself), so kudos to Katy for being able to dial it back a few notches now and then. Besides, The Crazy probably has its most concentrated — and desired — effect when it’s not the ONLY volume she has.

Looks to me like it was made for someone eight feet tall. And who looks like Anjelica Huston. I don’t think this works at all.
It’s a little matronly. I’d love to see it on Helen Mirren.
Her hair looks like she lost water pressure in the shower like in that Seinfeld episode. Or got transported back to the 70′s..
It is a little matronly, but I think the fit is good, the black works with her dark hair and lovely skin. I give it a pass. Good taste wins!
Katy is one of those people who I forget how stunning she really is when she’s wearing something cracked out. With a face like that, (and that rack!) simple suits her.
She’s still got her boobs out so she clearly hasn’t gotten sick of that. I know this isn’t an Unfug, but I’d change the neckline, lose the sleeves, and please someone help her with her hair.
She really is very pretty. It’s just hard to see under all the cracktastic stuff she usually wears. And her hair, while it may or may not be her natural color, is someone’s natural human hair color.
I always feel like one day she will be 50 and look back on her 20s thinking “why did I dress like a child who had snorted a giant pixie stick when I was in fact so very very pretty?!!”
There’s just something about the hair and makeup that makes this feel a little too Morticia Addams-y.
I think this is a vast improvement over the usual, so I’m going to give it a fab (with the caveat that the current necklines is low enough to be tacky). I agree with the comment above that it could also be good if the sleeves were nixed. But that’s a different look entirely. I like that the look she’s working here is kind of McMillan & Wife.
Katie’s dress is messing with my head, probably because I have seen one too many Halloween War shows on the Food Network…I swear some of those white flowers could be itty bitty skeleton skulls. Oh well, at least I am looking forward to Halloween.
Now, those are well wrangled ta-tas. (Christina H., take note.) The spry gun slap is her schtick, which adds to the Florida Patio-ness of the print, and I’d like to see this in navy or forest green or burgundy instead of harsh black.
I agree, the black IS too harsh!
Harsh is correct but she looks healthy and happy and she is so pretty.
I agree with others, it looks matronly. And how can anyone say that she has a pretty face? It is so artificially constructed: painted on eyebrows, fake eye lashes, etc. It would be nice to see her tone it down a notch! Her actual face looks far different from that, she is kind of like a Kardashian. They wear false eyelashes and 10 inches of make up every.day.of.their.lives.
This is waaaaay too matronly for me.
I find it amusing that someone who is wearing a dress cut to her nipples is accused of being matronly. On second thought, it isn’t amusing, it’s sad.
This ^^^
I seriously was dumbfounded when I read the words “matronly.” Heh. Maybe the mammaries call to mind motherhood and ergo matronliness. But this does not read matronly to me at all.
I agree that this is not matronly. I think she looks quite classy (would look even more classy if she brought the neckline up a little bit.) I think she should have parted her hair on the side or put it up, as the center part is making it look more seventies to me. I think lighter makeup would have also helped, but overall this is the best she’s looked in awhile in my opinion.
I dont think it is just a neckline that makes something matronly or not, however I think when you get a v-neckline cut that low, it can make the girls look droopy. Yes, they are being pushed together, but they are much closer to her waist than her collarbone. I think the print and the hem length give it a Mrs.Roper kind of feel.
Yeah, I’m not getting matronly, either. And I definitely do not agree that her breasts look droopy. If those are droopy, I feel like there’s no hope for the world. My only quarrel is with her hair. I wish it wasn’t parted so harshly down the middle.
The girls are certainly enjoying all of the fresh air that they are getting.
I agree with Annie. The first thing I thought was Morticia Addams.
I think this looks great on her and there’s nothing matronly about it.
It’s a goth, sex-kitten Maude! No thank you. Bea Arthur did it much better (sans the cleavage, of course).
Can’t edit so I have to add – I find the part too harsh as well (I also see the Morticia Addams comparison there).
UGH!
She may have dialed back the bubblegum, but she’s got the cleavage cranked to 11.
It IS matronly in a very Mrs. Robinson way and I kinda love it for that.
*I* would look matronly in this….. SHE looks darkly sexy and dangerous…..is she going to give you appetizers or take your husband? Who knows!
Aw, I like this. I think she looks sort of old Hollywood.
I love the dress & she looks great in it! WANT! But, I find the hairdo boring, the makeup too heavy, and the belt unnecessary! It is still a well deserved FAB!
I’m in agreement with Rachael. I think she looks pretty good in this dress — not matronly — but could definitely use a different hairstyle or at least a side part.
Well…Her hair isn’t blue or purple.
Her cleavage looks AMAZING!
A flamenco dancer who’s smiling through after her hair and her ruffles have gone completely limp.
Okay, this is well-played on another level.
She wore this to the Night of Too Many Stars, the Comedy Central fund raiser for autism education. And she sang “Firework” with a young autistic girl who loved music and played the piano for her.
So bravo for her for going understated – she was not the center of attention and she understood it.
