Clearly we need a new subset of posts on GFY: Things That Look Like Home Furnishings In A Heinous Way, and then Things That We Kind of Want To Decorate Our Houses With Someday. There’s been a lot of viable powder-room wallpaper lately; this could be that, but personally, I’m tempted to turn them into drapes for my bedroom once I paint the ceiling dark blue:
None of which is to say that it doesn’t work as a dress, too. It does. On her. She’s teeny. She’s a sprite. You can pretty easily wear a swingy, shapeless mod cut when everything poking out of it is tiny and toned. I might love it more sleeveless, or with more of a three-quarter length, but that’s picking a nit. It’s cute, and she’s SO HAPPY. It’s proof of how much difference a smile and some confidence makes; if she wore this with her previously standard tight-lipped quarter-grin with wide eyes tinged with fear, we’d be all, “Oh, dear, I don’t know how to feel.” But the radiance she’s emanating sells the entire ensemble beautifully. The lesson here is that Jason Segel does good things for a girl’s wardrobe.
And I love the purple shoes with it, for a splash of funk and bravery. Clearly, “A Splash of Funk and Bravery” is also the title of SOMETHING. Album? Book? Beat poem? Whatever. Add it to the list and I’ll figure it out later.

This look may or may not have encouraged me to buy two Mod-inspired shift dresses from The Limited. And take her picture to my hair stylist.
Maybe she saw that photo of Jason Segel walking around holding hands with Matila, and this is her reaction shot. I did the same thing, Michelle. And I didn’t look nearly as adorable and pretty as you do here, so props to you.
With that smile and those shoes she could have worn a burlap sack and would have gotten a Well Played from me. (Although I am drawing the line at the the depressed carebear dress.)
Clearly Jason does a body good. (he could do my body good any day of the week. hehe)
Hee hee. So glad I’m not the only one with a crush on big, goofy Jason Segel.
I’m so glad that he quit smoking. It was a hang up for me in our never-going-to-happen-relationship. He seems like such a great person!
Mo, I have so many never-going-to-happen relationships it’s not even funny.
This dress would look good on pretty much no-one else, but I’m happy that she’s happy.
Nope, this dress would look great on a lot of women and a lot of different body types–because it’s simple and pretty, and can be made fantastic with really great shoes. It’s so easy for Michelle to look twee–she’s worn a dress with tearful clouds, for godssake–but this simple shape and style really make her look cheerful and sleek.
Really?? This is a no no no for me. The dress looks like a kitchen floor or bathroom in the 60′s and the purple shoes clash. But she looks happy, so +1 I suppose.
This reminded me of an article I saw of Michelle/Jen saying she would love to do a Dawson’s Creek reunion, and so did Katie Holmes. Which made me wonder if Katie Holmes wants to do it to reunite with former flame (in tv and real life) Pacey. I mean, I would kind of love to see it, except for how lovely Diane K. seems!
NOOOOooooo… Dicey is around to stay!
Not the dress’s fault, but OMG the clash with the background.
I’d prefer it without sleeves, and maybe a touch deeper opening at the neckline. She is glowing with confidence. I’d like the shoes more if they actually fit her. And, maybe a long chain or bead necklace? Perhaps that would be too costume-y.
But the fabric I’d use for patio furniture upholstery, or maybe to redo the breakfast nook cushions. Impractical, but cheery.
Sorry, but this is a fancy hospital gown. I totally expect to see bum cheeks if she turns around.
The runway version had a waist and some white sheer bits around the collar, really pretty!
The “splash of funk and bravery” don’t help.
Bo-Ring. This is something I’d buy, kind of hate, and wear anyway on Mondays when I’m too bloated and hungover to care.
I think “A Splash of Funk and Bravery” sounds like the title of Prince album, no?
Or a really cheap cologne…
Can’t really fault the outfit, but I am really really really sick of her hair.
I love those shoes and I love that she is smiling!!! Yea for her being with Jason Segel! Those were some super cute photos of him and Matilda walking hand in hand on Lainey yesterday!
I see what Siobhan sees. All she needs is an IV pole and a plastic bracelet and she’s good to go. To radiology.
Nah, the hospital gown print is MUCH smaller. She’s tiny, not microscopic.
I want a chair with that pattern in my bedroom! Also a skirt.
Well Played????
Yeah, if you want to be a picnic table in a 50s beach flick.
What is Intern George putting in your Friday Margaritas?
We ARE allowed to disagree.
Yeah, this is a no for me for the reasons expressed above. I don’t like the print (they look like things you stick to the bathtub to prevent slips) and I don’t like the shapeless mod shape at all. Maybe I just don’t like the mod look in general? Probably. Time for some soul searching. I have been assuming that I just didn’t like the mod look specifically on Michelle Williams, but now it’s hard to imagine who I *would* like it on. Hmm. In any case, I still don’t like it on her, even though she is very wee.
I do quite like her hair, and in fact I like this incarnation of this cut/color so much more than her previous versions of it.
I think this is adorable, and clearly if Jason Segel can make a girl glow like this he needs to be bottled and sold in stores everywhere.
I like this. Jason is clearly made of magic. Now can she work on his look please? Lainey posted some lovely photos of him with Matilda (still one of the best celebrity child names ever).
I think this is quite cute on her but the purple shoes feel like a very random pairing.
Love the Segel Smile.
LOVE! As a dress, curtains or wallpaper this fabric is FAB! And, Michelle’s confidence = WIN!!! COVET!
Some of us like ’50s beach flicks, Sweetsinger… most of which were actually filmed in the ’60s, but nevertheless. If I could be Sandra Dee as “Gidget” for a day, I’d call it game/set/match.
I’m personally meh on the dress itself but I just love MW. She’s a fine, classy actress and I love her hair. Few women have worn the pixie cut as well as she does. She’s rocking it Mia Farrow In ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Style here but in a non-creepy “I’m About To Go Mano-A-Mano With Ruth Gordon” way. (And, yes… I heart Ruth Gordon, too. She is missed.)
I think she looks fetching, without looking twee. And SO HAPPY. I love that someone called it the Segel Smile. Seriously, I have never seen her smile like ths.
I just can’t with all these women standing with their feet crossed. Imagine if men were told to do the same thing on the red carpet (and actually, idiotically, did it).
The clashing background does distract, but I find this charming. The tailoring is flawless, too, which makes all the more difference with a seemingly shapeless garment such as this one: It has its own shape, as it should. The shoulders and sleeves fit her perfectly, and the length is just right. Love the gentle pop of color with the shoes.
Perfection. AND she looks happy, again and still! I applaud the entirety.
I came to this website today expressly to find solace among friends who think this dress, with that haircut and those shoes, looks TERRIBLE. I don’t understand why someone as beautiful and sophisticated as Michelle Williams is doing these demure little-girl outfits with crew necks and a conservative pixie-cut. So dowdy! Too cutesy! Not pretty enough!
Also sack-shaped!
This works. It fits, it doesn’t annoy with the usual schlump, and though it is wall-papery, it’s fun and bright. It may also be a good look because the length is perfect, or because she’s standing up straight, or because the shoes look great, or because her hair looks lovely – OR BECAUSE THE GIRL IS ACTUALLY LOOKING HAPPY OMG.
I congratulate Jason Segel. You’ve done wonders, dude.
