Well Played, Quvenzhane Wallis

well-played

I want to hug her at all times.

    I want a poodle purse.

If sheer can be a trend, it those heel-less Lady Gaga shoes can be a trend, if ombre hair can be a trend, then DAMN do I want stuffed animal purses to be a trend.

she was interviewed on ellen and she said the dog purse is her ‘signature’

The headline should read “puppily played, …”

her ‘signature’? I now love her even more!

She is cute as most child actors are. But, seriously, I do not want her to win the Oscar. Someone much more deserved needs to win. After she’s gone the distance, fine!

She is AMAZING in a very difficult movie, though, I will say that. If she wins I would not be mad at all.

Right. Because based on “going the distance logic” we already have Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock as Oscar winners.

I haven’t seen the movie and can’t judge her performance, but I get very annoyed with Oscars awarded for people’s body of work or to “right a wrong,” ESPECIALLY when said Oscar is given when the person is nominated for a subpar performance. Prime example: Whoopi Goldberg, who got an award for Ghost (really?) because people started feeling kinda bad about that whole The Color Purple thing.

(This is irksome not least because you’re robbing someone else, who gets a make-up-for-it Oscar a few years later the next time they produce a halfway decent performance, robbing their co-nominees THAT year, and so forth.)

While I agree that it’s awkward to give an Oscar to someone who could turn out to be a one-hit wonder, if hers was the best performance in that category, so be it.

On another note, I think DOG PURSE TRIPLETS is my new potential band name.

She was absolutely incredible in BOTSW. She deserves her nomination and if she won I would not have any kind of problem. I mean, just look at this. From goofing around on set to “oh shit where has my daddy gone I’m all alone and there’s a storm coming” like THAT.

Oy, you can’t really tell, but the word “this” in my comment is a link.

Oh, I adore that third picture. No matter how crummy your day, it is completely impossible not to smile back at that grin.

As a girl with a horrible case of cracked-out cowlicks, I am jealous of, while madly in love with, her hair in that picture.

OMG, cuteness overload! I sincerely hope she stays sweet, cute, and innocent for a long time. The poodle purse is a fierce signature, little lady!

This child is beyond adorable, but I wish she had her Hushpuppy hair and not the Malia Obama pageboy (which I love on Malia because it suits her position, looks and image).

    • hdew
      +1

I agree with the first part. But I wish Malia O didn’t straighten her hair either so as to show that curly (“ethnic” some would say) hair can actually suit her position, looks and image! Same goes for Michelle O.

Yes, but how to you pronounce her name?

    • Sajorina

I read that her nickname is “Nazie”!

    • kayla

I heard her interviewed on NPR when the movie first came out and here is the pronounciation phonetically – Que VON zhan nay (VON gets the accent).

      • Heather
        0

It does, but in the official spelling, the last E gets it — so strange!

        • Miranda
          0

I think it’s to make it clear that the last “e” is voiced, rather than having the last syllable be “zhayn.” Same with Beyoncé–it’s not bee-yawn-SAY, it’s bee-YON-say; but without the accent, you could be excused for thinking it was bee-yuns (rhymes with once). That is, if you lived under a rock.

ADORABLE!!! She reminds me of my 8 year old niece… Girly and ladylike, but still very much a little girl! My 9 year old self wants to invite her to a sleep over so badly! And, I have a real miniature poodle we can play with!

Awwww! The dresses and poodles are way cute, but they pale in comparison to that million-dollar smile.

This darling little gal totally made my day. She could not be cuter w/ all of her adorable dog purses! Love that she dresses and accessorizes for her age…really awesome!

She is cuteness personified. Less so is the jailhouse-looking tattoo on the upper right arm of the woman I assume to be her mom.

    • Jessica

Let’s leave people’s mom’s out of this, okay? She’s not the celeb. Thank you!

I hear you Jessica but I did want to say it is nice to see such a young actress WITH her mother. The Fanning clan seem parent-less sometimes although clearly their parents are part of their lives. This girl and her mother seem very sweet to me and enjoying their moment.

I think her mom is beautiful — and exactly what little Q. is going to grow up to look like.

        • Vandalfan

Mom is beautiful, and I love a mother being present with her nine (9!) year old in the face of such overwhelming attention. I wish all the young girls had such support. (Lilo?) But, to many, a tattoo is a deliberate disfigurement. I think mom would be even more beautiful, and everyone likewise would be more beautiful, without such permanent body art, no matter how visible.

And yet the same used to be said about pierced earlobes, too. Perhaps such objections are just indications of how fashions change. But we all agree Nazie is adorable.

Roger Ebert interviewed her shortly after she completed filming Beasts of the Southern WIld. Here’s a link to the interview: http://947freshfm.cbslocal.com/2013/01/10/meet-9-year-old-best-actress-oscar-nominee-quvenzhane-wallis-video/ She really is a precious child, and she acted her little heart out as Hushpuppy. I hope we’ll see her again and again, she’s a treasure.

So for some reason, the Royal Weddingpalooza is a related link. So I clicked so I could look at the pretty, pretty dress while waiting for dinner after a long, long and somewhat difficult day.

And then I clicked on the Royals tag and sifted through.

Which took me to Royals at the Olympics. And, of course, you linked to Olympic Abs.

Which absolutely made my evening. I have forgotten I need to put dinner in the oven after another viewing of Olympic abs…

There’s a rumour that she may be playing Annie in the remake, instead of Willow Smith : hope this is true. The best actress nomination is well deserved (youngest ever nominee, so a fantastic achievement), but I’d be wishing her more roles rather than a statuette at this time, especially in the company she’s in. Looking forward to seeing her at the Oscars!

Am i allowed to carry a stuffed animal purse now?

I love that second picture: That dress is so cute, and I love the purple poodle puppy purse!

    (Yay alliteration!)

Love them all, but the second picture is pure joy – though I wish you hadn’t broken the rapture with an Aubrey O’Day mention! This girl is the anti-Aubrey; if they ever actually touch, they will cancel one another out and cease to exist…..

On the one hand she’s amazing and adorable and I think I love her; on the other I’m slightly worried that the list of under 12′s who are more accomplished AND better dressers than me has grown so large… *sigh* life choices

Can I say how much I love her tights? And that they are a little bit baggy at the knees and ankles? I wore tights like that as a kid, and they bagged at the knees and the ankles, and seeing it on Quvenzhane here makes her quite the cute, adorable, real kid — even more so than DOG PURSE TRIPLETS. (Jen S 2.0 has the right idea — that is a band name if I ever heard one!)

That first pink poodle purse? My 9-year-old daughter has the exact same one, in orange. She is beside herself with excitement that a real movie star has a purse like hers.

Acting like Aubrey O’Day– kooky, brightly colored, overly matchy with a canine accessory– is GREAT when you’re 9. When you’re Aubrey’s age, it’s less great.
