And these shorts are CRAAAAAAAAZY.

You’re twenty-seven.

Dress like it, maybe?

I know your record label’s

Trying to GROOOOOOOOOOOOOM you, baby.

But you’re a grown-up.

It’s a little creepy, lady.

    Plus: the shoes.

Yes, the shoes look like giant blobs of chewing gum.

Actually, the shorts look like the ones my daughter refuses to wear. And she’s 5 yrs old.

Concurred. From the waist up, it’s fine, but from the waist down, it’s Attack of the Tweens. It’s WEIRD.

Why is her song so DANG catchy??

Somebody check the DeLorean, because she’s TOTALLY swiped Marty McFly’s sneakers from 2015.

Amen! (To the outfit and the shoes!)

I think her shoes are an homage to the fact that it was just recently the “future” travel date from Back to the Future. I like the Lacoste shirt though.

Seriously, though, she’s old enough to have worn this the first time around. And let’s all remember the rules about if you wore it the first time ’round, you can’t wear it this time ’round.

Eh … I’m 28, and I’m pretty sure I missed it the first time around. We were much more of the grunge/skater generation than the tie-dye shorts generation. Not that I condone these shorts at any age, or point in history.

Get it, GFY Jessica! I hope one day you and Heather will do a Weird Al-esque CD of fashion parodies.
In other news, those shoes make me SO ANGRY.

Ah, come on I think people are hard on her just because she’s 26/27 and they don’t expect her to be because of the song and her voice.

The shoes/sneakers are hideous but the shorts are fun. I guess because I’m reaching a certain age (around Jessica and Heather’s) that I see people judging clothing as “too young for her” when they can dislike it for other reasons. There are things that are too young for me, but those shorts, I’d wear them running errands around town if I was 27. Harmlessly cheesy.

Before this post came to my life
    I missed it so bad
    You should know that
That song is so, so bad!

… and now it’s stuck in my head. :)

Said it before and I say it again, the song does absolutely nothing for me. When I hear it I have to say, “cancion que?” Is something wrong with me? Am I going to start spitting on babies and running into dogs with my bike?

The outfit on the other hand, I have to admit I kind of like. Even on a 27 year-old. Yup, something is definitely wrong with me.

    • Annie E

Agreed on the first part. I do not understand the appeal of the song and, while I generally love catchy songs, I don’t find it unavoidably catchy either.

Eh…I’ll be 28 in August and I’d wear those shorts to walk around my neighborhood on a hot summer day. The shoes are inexcusable.

if the shirt was tucked instead of tied and the shoes just were something different (i honestly don’t care what, just different) then i would be all about this. i love patterened shorts, and tie-dye is fab imo.

I wish people would stop giving her a hard time about her age. I’m 27 and still haven’t successfully left the “call me maybe” stage of life. The outfit is bad, but 27 year olds can still wear young, cute things….right?

    • Tina
      0

YES! Yes they can. I feel horrible just thinking about how I would have to stop wearing my colorful patterned clothes just because of my age. I’m 26 and will never (NEVER! I say) turn to “adult” (?) clothes just because I’m getting older.

      • Halo
        0

I’m 38 and believe it’s okay to wear cute shorts around town and a top tied at the waist if I want to. Those shoes are ugly, though. Holla!

  18. witjunkie
    0

    She skews young. 28 isn’t 50.

Did you see the video of her and Jimmy Fallon and his musicians singing it? cute. One guy is playing a baby xylophone.

  19. Evalyn

Hey, it’s summer (finally), let her have some fun. If 60 is the new 40, then 27 is the new 07, which seems about right. Esp. the shoes.

  20. panjinlian

Or, you know, dress whatever age you like… She looks happy, clean, healthy, and youthful. I am 27 and I have very little desire to dress like Meryl Streep yet. And I’m a university teacher – If I were a popstar I would imagine that desire being non-existent.

(That being said, I have no desire to wear those shoes either, but each to their own)

This might actually be cute if it weren’t for the shoes. Sandals could have saved it.

  22. vandalfan

She’s hardly mutton, but this outfit is newborn lamb. It belongs on a high school Junior, at most. There is a time and a season for everything in our lives, and the time to dress in tie-dyed booty shorts, flappy high tops, and a belly shirt expires at about seventeen.

  23. grace

Wow–kind of harsh. 27 is too old to wear shorts????? She’s super cute and her legs are great…and it’s HOT- so why not?

  24. Claire L1
    0

You know…it’s the shoes. Seriously, I think if she had on some sandals or flats no one would blink except to say “Jeeze, I need those legs”

BTW, I’m rebelling… I’m 39 and just got some polka dot tap pants ( not super short mind you) that are so 1930′s it’s happiness in material AND that EVERYONE else thinks is a skirt…except my mother who told me I’m too old for them…. This, coming from a woman who has a pair of pajama jeans. ……

  25. Jessica

Dude. It’s not SHORTS in general. I wear shorts myself. It’s this ENTIRE LOOK: tie-dyed shorts, a shit-ton of friendship bracelets, the shirt tied above her waist, and those shoes. Shorts can be totally cute for running around town, and I NEVER said she had to dress like Meryl Streep. But this ENTIRE look skews about 15 years old, and I think they’re trying to market her as a tween, when she most certainly is not. And I think it’s going to get really awkward for her in about five years.

    • TheReset
      0

      indeed, J.

    • Kara
      0

That’s exactly it. The shorts are not an indecent length (I’ve seen plenty of “shorts” that are over the past few days; I know it’s hot, BELIEVE ME, but if your actual ass is hanging out, you need to put on something else) and the tie-dye pattern isn’t offensive either. But the outfit is just twee. In fact, if a 16-year-old were wearing it, it would still be twee.

The space-sneakers in particular really fug this up.

I was going to say how much I loved this post, but then I got hit with an ad with a gigantic Kim Kardashian shilling Midori in a bright green bandage dress . . . and now Carly’s shorts are freaking fantastic.

Agreed – she looks young, sure, but I’d much rather look at this than the eye-searing hatred that is Kimye.

…Jessica, I’m afraid that you’ll have to close down Go Fug Yourself after today. It’s been an awesome eight years, but I think that this is officially the most brilliant thing that’s appeared on GFY – nay, the Internet – and is probably impossible to top.

(I include Kanye’s debut fashion show in this assessment, so you KNOW it’s true.)

Also, CRJ, stop beating up your countrymen and stealing their shoes.

Okay, I’m going to be the unpopular opinion person and say that – minus the shoes – I am totally all right with this. The shorts are short but not scary short, and I think all the bright colors are young and fresh. (Confession: Mostly I can’t judge her because it was 102F with 70% humidity where I was, and I wasn’t leaving the house with anything more than what was necessary myself.)

From what I’ve seen elsewhere on the web, this was taken on the set of her new music video.

I guess it’s “good” since it wasn’t her that chose the outfit (most likely) but not so good in the sense that her record label probably DID choose this.

Bah. This song is almost a year old up here. Sigh….

    ♫ hey i just met you ♫

I’m glad to hear that this might just be a costume.
But… the bangs, the tie dye, the moon boots… the bare midriff shirt!

Right – because she is being dressed/groomed like it (and yes, she totally sounds ‘young’, but so does Barbra… Not 16 young, but you know what I mean).

Maybe that outfit will look awkward when her skin starts to sag and age spots appear, but other than that, I don’t see what age has to do with it. Those pants, not to mention the shoes, would not look any better on a teenager.

  42. AA
    0

The shorts are definitely hideous, but not too “young.” They’d look hideous on a 15-year-old. The shoes belong back in 1990 where they came from.

  43. Anna

Why is everyone hating on the Isabel Marant shoes? I love them.

Personally, I wouldn’t wear this outfit, but I don’t really see anything profoundly wrong with it.

  44. Claire L1

OK… question…if the shoes DIDN’T have a ‘name’…then would they still be cool? I mean , honestly, I look at them and see a K-mart special on boys “street” shoes…..
I look at the SHOES….don’t care who makes them ( unless I’m shopping for comfort AND pretty…then there’s a difference).

Isabel Marant designed those shoes?! Now I am kinda bummed.

I’m with Jessica. This is young for a 27 year old on the whole. It’s not just the shorts or the sneakers. It’s everything altogether. They are definitely marketing her as much younger than 27. Watch the video for this cheeseball song and you’ll see. It’s her hanging out with some neighbor’s friend or something, who is in a garage band (or something equally cliche) and playing all coy and flirty with him. Like a teenager. (For whatever reason, the boy she gives her number too turns out to be gay, I guess, so the whole song is moot for her). I’m only a couple years older than her and at 27, that wasn’t exactly my method of picking up guys (nor theirs for picking up me). Her dressing like that is not just a definite assault on the eyes, it’s absolutely calculated.

  47. Charlotte

I’m old enough to be her mom, don’t wear shorts, and I think the outfit is cute.

A bit “young”, to be sure, but she’s pulling it off. Some people younger than her (I am looking at you, Miley Cyrus) could take lessons.

  48. A

The outfit would be awful on anyone. I’m more horrified that a 27yr-old would sing such a stupid song. I can never get past the first 30seconds…which, unfortunately, will continue to play through my head for next few hours after hearing it! I really thought whoever sang that song was unable to vote, or I hoped.

I was really happy when I found out she was an actual adult, and not some poor kid they tarted up for the millionth time. She should dress more adult though, not more revealing, just less of the Lizzie MaGuire reject outfits

Love love love this colorful look for summer!! When I attempt this colorful look for summer I like to wear a lot of bright accessories. http://www.mykitsch.com/hair-ties/ has really beautiful bright hair ties that can also double as a chic arm band. I stack them up with my “arm candy” jewelry look. They also have some pretty jewelry that is very dainty and delicate, I usually mix with my bangles and bolder pieces.

Conversely, she’d be even more ridiculous being seriously glammed up as the singer of such pop tart tunes. Her persona suits her music, so let her be! Besides 27 is YOUNG!!! If you are singing songs for 12 year olds and you are under 30, you are entitled to wear neon in daytime. In fact, it is probably a mandate.
