Insert the usual waxings poetical about how much I like Emma Stone here — the answer, in case you don’t know, is a lot – and then let’s move on to the dress:
I kind of like it. It also looks like it could be the winning design in a Project Runway challenge that required the designers to make an evening gown out of newspaper. And it would win in a landslide — it’s really interesting, and clearly beautifully made — but a lot of things have won on Project Runway that I might not wear out of the house, like Austin Scarlett’s infamous corn husk dress. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure this isn’t ACTUALLY made of newsprint, so you’re safe, Emma. SAFE AGAIN. Someday, that luck is going to run out.

I might have liked this less against any other backdrop, but the juxtaposition against the roses is pretty cool. Also if the crotch were less shiny, I would really like it, bordering on LOVE.
Although., I just looked at the closeup and, damn those are a LOT of rosettes sewn into her ladyparts.
The runway version of this looked much shorter — midcalf, maybe? — or else the model was just really tall, and I thought that length was more flattering, what with the slit. I keep getting distracted by the slit poofing open at Emma’s toes. It makes me want to hem it by about 6 inches. It’s definitely an interesting dress, but I think it might be overwhelming her just a bit.
I think it’s an awesome dress, and it looks great with her hair and coloring. Wish she had a sparkly clutch instead of that fancy granny bag, tho.
I like the idea of this, but I would like to see it with a mid-thigh skirt and lose the rosettes below the waist.
Exactly.
Whatever is going on in her crotch area completely ruined it for me.
YES. It was a scrolldown fug for me.
I think I would be happier if the corsage-y stuff on the shoulder were taken off–there is ENOUGH GOING ON WITH THE PRINT, LAGERFELD. BE RESTRAINT. (PS why don’t we get Lagerfeld posts anymore? I LOVED those!)
But ANYWAY, I also think that anyone who says “not on her” is being kind of nutso, because this dress is better on a redhead than any other kind of human, I think. And, yes, I realize there are other redheads in Hollywood, but I don’t see it for Julianne Moore, and, um, Emma Stone beat Jessica Chastain to it.
YES! Bring back the Lagerfeld posts.
It would have been so much better if we could’ve seen her feet….the hem mades those two points look like her shoes and then turns it into a weird almost jumpsuit situation which is horrifying by most counts. Couldn’t have been so much better….
I agree — I was so frightened for a second that it WAS in fact a jumpsuit, which would’ve caused me to flail dramatically in my office before slumping in my chair with a plaintive, “Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?”
This is fine, except for the bottom. It’s weird. Maybe take off enough to be knee length?
It’s all good from the waist up. I like the shape and the wide belt. If it were just above-the-knee length, and there were some cute shoes visible, it would be delightful.
Can we all just take a moment and appreciate that this didn’t scroll down into pants? For a split second I thought it was a jumpsuit. Phew!
I kind of like it, but I really don’t think a floor-length iteration of anything in this particular fabric (which is, don’t get me wrong, super-cool) also needs to be decorated with fungal overgrowths of laser-cut… whatever those are. There’s just too much going on here. If the designer had stuck with the shape and draping, and resisted the urge for unnecessary ornamentation, everything would have been more than fine.
What everyone else said. Lose the crotch bouquet and shorten it to the knees.
Hah, crotch boquet. That is the exact term I didn’t know I was looking for. (And I agree.)
I’m totally blinded by my love for Emma Stone.
I love this dress up until it hits her knees- as I was scrolling down that’s where I expected it to stop. I still like it because it’s interesting and bold and funky, but I wish we could see some of her legs instead of looking like she got tangled up in it as she was leaving her limo.
I just don’t go for all the fluffy flowerettes growing from her groin. If she an Alan Cumming (wearing that black and white outfit) were standing next to each other, I’m sure my head would explode.
I’m on board with making this knee length and removing whatever is going on in the crotch region.
I love this so much it makes me sick. But I would love it even more if it were shorter. I could even handle a little mullet-dress action with this one.
When TLo posted this yesterday, I sort of squinted my eyes, and I thought “See LiLo – this is what you could have been if it wasn’t for all the insanity, shoplifting, boozing, drugging, and court dates.”
Doesn’t she sort of look like LiLo in these pics if you unfocus your eyes?
She is working it as much as anyone can, but it’s way too busy and fussy for me, and you ruined it the instant you mentioned newspaper. However, I now want a wall of roses in my apartment.
Me too!
Dress is likeable … without the head of lettuce on her left shoulder …
I can’t vote, I feel like it’s meh and fab all at the same time -I think I just like the top half, perhaps with a super tight black knee length skirt, or I wish the whole thing was shorter
I’d like it better if it was shorter, perhaps mid length, teamed with some great shoes and a simple bracelet or bangle. i think the slit at the front just sits all wrong. Love the pattern and the texture – something different for a change!
I voted meh before I realized that her crotch was sprouting. Oh why, Emma? You are so lovely. No more sprouting of the crotch, please.
Wow. I really, REALLY don’t like this.
First of all, it looks like it’s made out of the Contac paper I use to line my kitchen shelves and drawers.
Second of all, there is a huge flowery mass devouring her left shoulder.
Third of all, I just noticed the foliage creeping up towards her bits and EW.
Fourth of all, it makes her look DUMPY. And Emma Stone may be many things (most of them awesome), but none of them are D U M P Y.
This is a beautiful dress. Yes, there are rosettes & ruching, but it’s subtle, even the one on the shoulder adds texture without too much bulk. And it does look smashing in front of those red roses.
Other than her beautiful skin and shiny hair, there’s nothing about this look I like. Way too fussy and busy for no apparent reason. I get dizzy looking at the pattern and have to look away.
I think it needs to lose the top ruffle and fall mid-thigh, and then it wouldn’t look so…. something.
I just had to keep looking and looking to convince myself the bottom wasn’t a pair of Zubaz. I’m with everyone who said if it was shorter and you could see her feet that would make the crotch flowers less horrible.
I don’t hate it, really. I think it’s hard for Emma to look bad in anything. But there’s something weird going on here, and I don’t know if it’s because the photo was taken at an angle, or the way she’s standing, or the print of the dress plays DEVIL’S TRICKERY!!! but do her legs and feet look like they’re gradually getting smaller? As if she’s being summoned back into her lamp feet first waiting for someone else to come along and rub her the right way?
Also, maybe it’s the print again, but… are those vagina ruffles?
I LIKE it, I LOVE her. I am just compelled by this irrational need to see her feet. Oddly, the peg look still kind of stumpifies her and that makes me sad.
I’ve never noticed before… But she looks like a young Julie Cooper-Nichol.
I’m sorry in advance, but: It looks like fabric scraps are leaking out of her “bikini incision”.
I LOVE, ADORE & COVET IT ALL! This look is PERFECTION from head to toe! Love the hairdo, the makeup, the bag, the jewelry & thre dress is AMAZING! She’s so awesome that I want to hang out with her!
…It would look AWESOME on Helen Mirren?
All I can think now is how amazing she would have been in Just My Luck.
If this were a mini skirted dress it would look fab. Floor length it’s just kind of okay.
