Fug or Fab: Michelle Williams

fug-or-fab

I think this dress is actually probably really pretty. My problem is that I often feel Michelle Williams looks exactly the same in everything she wears, regardless of what it is.

By which I mean: valiantly battling some very romantic and old-timey fainting disease, and as if she is repressing the urge to run home and check whether the iron is on. Very distracting to the eye.

Ergo, you decide:

Hot-off-the-runway S/S ’12 Dior! I am sooo jealous! I think I would wear it better, if only someone would give me the chance – hmm hmm, Maison Dior?

  2. Jamie

I’m just relieved that we’re not being asked to pretend she looks like Marilyn Monroe in any meaningful way. She’s so much prettier when she looks like herself and I love love LOVE the pixie on her. I agree that the dress doesn’t really do anything for her coloring, but I think the makeup is so spot on that her face doesn’t look washed out, at all.

  3. Lindy

Had that dress been on, say, Zoe Saldana, I’d love it. Or on Michelle Williams in blue–perfect! As it is, she’s just washed out. She needs a color and a great necklace.

  4. Kate

I love it. She looks beautiful.

  5. Elizabeth

It’s a bit eau-de-nightgown, isn’t it? And one of those annoying kinds that gets all twisted in the middle of the night so that you end up having tragic dreams of curtains and bandages and wasting diseases. Which brings me back to my fug by virtue of her coloring vote.

  6. Autumn Van Weir

I think the dress is probably gorgeous. Though I wish someone would mention to her that ladies don’t put arsenic in their morning tea anymore to appear faint and fair all day. 1850 called and they wan’t their poisonous habit back.

I wish it was hot pink or an emerald green. OOO Or even a cobalt blue! Maybe a deep purple….

  8. Adriana

It’s such a blank canvas! I wish she had worn some jewelry.

  9. Eliza Bennett

Makeup, accessories, color, all these would have been nice. As it is…feh. And am I the only one kind of stunned by the mass of her mammaries? Where did they come from? Store them for fall, please.

    • Sajorina

She’s always had big boobs! I remember them dressing her modestly to cover them on Dawson’s Creek!

    • Christopher D

I’m just worried she’s going to get a chest cold. I know, I know compared to what some women show this is modest, if a bit nightgown-y, but somehow…
But she is just so pretty, and I love her haircut.

  10. Hollie

Colour! Any colour! Its a lovely dress, fits well, just needs something less pathetic than creamy/off-white

  11. Tues

She needs a color, this one is wrong, though the dress itself is cute. She looks like she has the “Ague”.

  12. lisas

I feel that MW is probably a spectacular brunette, and were she sporting a dark brown pixie this dress would have been really gorgeous. Maybe a dark fascinator would have saved this?!!? I feel like it’s just too much pale that is weirdly offset by the black sash. Maybe a white ribbon instead of black? I don’t know. There’s SOMETHING off, but I can’t quite figure it out.

I love the superpale minty green though.

  13. jean

She does rock the short hair however. She’s smart to keep that hair for now. She had horrible hair during her Dawson Creek days. I think she’s mostly a natural blonde (no doubt assisted a bit, but that’s normal when blondes get older), so I can’t imagine brown on her. I think it would make her look sad. Or sadder than she does. She’s a bit like Kirsten Dunst in that she innately has a stoic look to her. She’ll never be a merry person.

  14. Bella

Another color might be better, but I think she looks lovely as is.

  15. CJ

Love her in the short hair, and gosh, she’s so pretty. Not crazy about the color of the dress — it is really super pale green? I don’t think it’s a very good color for her skin. In another color — or white — it would be very pretty.

Also, I realize this is a grown woman, but somehow the super cleavage seems a bit incongruous with an unmade up, natural face and boyish hair which make her look like a little kid. Though the style of this flatters her body more than her usual 1960′s shift dresses and daisy-decorated gowns, somehow the retro wear works well with the Mia Farrow hair.

  16. Alice

I’m really just happy to see her wearing something that’s not her usual cap-sleeve peter pan collared pale dress. Instead, it’s a sleeveless, deep v neck pale dress! Next up is some color for her. And it’s not like she doesn’t know how to rock it, let’s all remember the mustard yellow dress.

    • Trish

Yes, what Alice said! She mixed up the silhouette, a bold color might have been too much change all at once. I think she’s in a suburb of fab …

  17. amys

Let’s do this in a more flattering color, and I’d say fab. Totally agree about the incongruity of her cleavage and the pixie look. Not saying pixies can’t have a nice rack, but do they put them on display like that? Nah. I’d rather have more left to the imagination. My eyes are drawn to her chest, and I’m guessing she’d rather be looked in the eye? She’s a very pretty lady; I just wish she’d find someone who really gets how to style her.

  18. Liz985

At least she’s showing a little cleavage (just as the seasons are getting colder, but whatever). Usually she’s trussed up to her neck with Peter Pan collars and bow ties.

  19. Lina

I love the dress; however, the color really fails on her. Dye it a vibrant shade of nearly anything and she’d rock the hell out of it. That said, I agree about her looking generally the same in all her photos. She only seems to use one smile and one pose in all her appearances, and she looks very sweet and slightly uncomfortable and terribly benign. It would be nice to see her exhibiting more character/personality/vivacity. (OTOH, I’m sure publicity gigs are among the least fun parts of her job, so I don’t really blame her.)

  20. elle

dropped waist, low neckline, no jewellery, no color
either pick up the black belt with a ribbon around neck or change belt, but definitely bring the eye up to that cute pixie cut
    too bad

  21. Sensible Sea Monster

Why does she remind me of Mia Farrow?

  22. Aria

I’m in the nightgown– and too pale at that — camp. But basically, to me, she can never match the brilliance of mustard Oscar gown and red lips.

  23. Chris

About the mammaries: I trust none of you are in New York right now.

I’m in beautiful (hahahahahano) Bergen County, NJ right now. I’m wearing shorts and a T-shirt. It is mid-October. While I enjoy the summer weather, I wish it would give us a break for a few.

  24. Mary

I vote FAB because I saw a different photo, and the seafoam green looks great!

  25. Chris

Also, ninety-fifthing the color suggestion. At this point, the only time I want to see Michelle Williams in white again is at her wedding, and even then that’s debatable.

  26. Megan

To me, MW gives off the vibe that she HATES going to these press junkets and showing up and having her picture taken. I see pictures of her at premieres, and she always looks to me as though she’d rather be at home reading a book. I think that has something to do with it.

I have to agree that she looks great as a blond, but I think she’d look fantastic as a brunette (or even a darker shade of blond).

  27. Melissa

God bless her, but Michelle suffers from the romantic/old-timey disease called “phobic about red carpet happy contaminating indie cred”, also suffered by Ginnifer Goodwin and Rose Byrne.

  28. Veronica

I can’t really knock on her about the skin. I have the same fair coloring with cool undertones, and there’s really not much you can do about it. Photographs always make me look pale and wan; it’s only under very good (read: staged) lighting that I look, ah, non-tubercular. So I’m going to forgive that and give her a “fab” because I like the dress.

  29. vandalfan

Oh, I just realized THAT’S the gal on Vogue done up as Marylin! Oh, no no no no no no!

  30. vandalfan

And a tad too much cleavage. The belt needs a sparkly little buckle. Maybe with emeralds and diamonds.

  31. wordphreak

Someone, please! Give her a bra!

  32. NYCGirl

It’s pretty, but, as others have said, too nightgown-y.

  33. Sarah

I saw her in person at NYFF at it looked more fabulous!

  34. Tracey

A different colour, yes, but I’m with the “more accessories, different make-up” camp as well. She has a simple (yes, lovely, but still simple) haircut, the gown is lovely but again, simple. Give me a bold necklace and bracelet! I think you also allude to her looking so fragile, and her poses/posture certainly encourage that thought. It’s difficult to judge when one has the posture of a dainty lady who just happens to be showing mucho cleavage.

  35. anny

Look, the belt has to go. It’s just sitting there being all visually jolty and not matching anything color- or style-wise and chopping her in two stumpy little halves and making her decolletage look too deep and honestly, what is it holding up? or in? IT’S A NIGHTGOWN. If you’re gonna go all Lucy Westenra on us, girl, get in there and DO IT!

  36. fritanga

I give up, and obviously Michelle has too. She automatically dumpifies everything she wears, and it’s utterly mystifying in such a young woman. Is it her expression? Is it her posture? Is it the hair? Dunno. This is a really inoffensive dress, even a pretty one in the right circumstances, and it just looks…schlubby and washed out.

The belt was a total mistake as well – far too heavy for such a delicate dress and it bisects her in a very unflattering manner.

  37. Sajorina

I think it’s FABULOUS! I saw it on TV and she looked BEAUTIFUL because the dress is beautiful and I can tell she’s comfortable wearing it! I love the seafoam green and the makeup is flawless, but I wish she had worn more sparkly jewelry and that I could see the shoes!

  38. Matilda

Apparently she’s 31 years old which I find hard to believe. It baffles me that there are so many young women out there with the figure and the money to be able to wear pretty much anything and then they wear this. Meh. Fug.

  39. Carol

A little less cleavage, a lot more support for the girls and, voila, fab!

  40. annabobanna

With that slight green color, it makes me think if she stood next to a lamp long enough and then they turned out the lights, she would glow in the dark.

  41. Kerry

She’s a flight risk. Look how she is nervously looking for exits. Every picture of her at an event has the same look. Like her publicist forced her to go and hired bodyguards to keep her there. I bet she tried to climb out the bathroom window later in the night.

  42. Liz

Girlfriend needs some color. I appreciate a pale-skinned girl, but she looks like she has consumption.

  43. donna

    Oh, Michelle. Pastels kill.
