Comments (65):
i had no idea that she was preparing for a sequel to moulin rouge.
I can live with the first hairdo but agree that the second is much too stiff. The whole look is a bit ‘School Fundraiser Night’.
I WANT to love the first dress, because of the deco elements, but instead, it’s just sort of…. okay?
Neither lives up to the fabulousness of her previous post with the dusty rose gown and then the red dress.
Eh, the hair’s not great, but everything else is, so I can deal. I love both dresses, and she doesn’t look botoxed to within an inch of her life. So, gorgeous is my verdict.
I am generally not one to comment on ears, but her earlobes freak me out in the sixth photo. That is the problem with heavy earrings.
It’s not the hair so much that’s causing her features to look bunched as it is the botox/filler/surgery/whatever that has taken a gorgeous face and turned it into something that looks like… I don’t know what — it just looks like a light breeze would cause it to shatter in a million pieces. Such a beautiful woman, and so unfortunate that she didn’t/doesn’t feel comfortable aging gracefully.
But yeah, the hair in the first one — that’s gotta go too.
I’ve got to agree. I think the first hairstyle is cute and the second fine. Dresses are lovely. But it’s the crazy lips and the immobile forehead that ruins it all.
In the 4th photo her face looks like Kathy Griffin to me. That’s a sign you’ve been messing with your face too much.
Both dresses are great, but yeah… the hair.
Nicole. Kidman. Has. Curly. Hair.
As you noted earlier in a Cannes post (I think it was the KStew/KiKi post), the weather has been wonky, which is not good for curly hair. A touch humid and windy, and it’s out of control.
In this case, you either roll with it, or you shellack the living daylights out of it.
STOP CRITICIZING. Otherwise she will go back to blond and ironed which looked horrid. Curly hair has a disobedient streak that sometimes, you can’t control, no matter what you do. Let us all just glory in her gorgeous red curls, okay?
Yes, Nicole has curly hair which can sometimes be a bit defiant. But those first couple of pictures aren’t natural curls. Someone set her hair and did that on purpose. It looks like the handiwork of Miss Truvy from “Steel Magnolias”.
*snort* Yeah, okay. But it may just be an alternate to the shellacking – restructuring your curls. But that doesn’t always work well – I had so many trial runs for my wedding where stylists straightened it and then re-curled. It ended up a disaster within hours of getting home because my normal curl tried to reassert itself.
I just hate when people dis curls. She has gorgeous hair and she should just be rolling with it.
Dude, *I* have curly hair. I’m not dissing curls. I’m dissing what they did with them. Please don’t jump to broad conclusions — saying I don’t like a curly hairstyle doesn’t mean I am dissing curly hair. Those aren’t even close to her natural curls, either. I wish she’d wear those instead.
It also, to me, doesn’t look like her natural curl is trying to reassert itself — I wish it would — but rather like a poor choice of style for the weather (which by the end of Cannes couldn’t have been a surprise) combined with a too-twee effect combined with just badly executed.
Heather -
You guys have more than once pounced on big hair that comes naturally (Morena Baccarin at the Globes comes to mind as a recent example – growing out a pixie cut with curls = big hair unless you slick it, which isn’t always better). I concede that’s not Kidman’s natural curl, but I don’t think it’s horrendous. I do think she needed bangs or tendrils or something to soften to ocean of forehead she has after Botox. Mostly, I see a variant on her heinous 2005 Globes look. http://gofugyourself.com/classic-fug-globes-fever2-01-2005
I know big hair or curly hair isn’t exactly on trend, and it’s not that this is even overly flattering hair (I think NK thinks her Botoxed forehead is AWESOME, when really, it’s not). But I do weary of Hollywood – and stylists, so then you guys then cover it – always making curls a “before” thing, you know? (Curls are almost always the before/unattractive state, while straightened hair is subsequently the after/attractive state when you see makeovers. It annoys me, especially because stylists always always trying to sell me on straight hair treatments, which would fry my hair faster than Colonel Sanders.)
I think for whatever weird reason, Nicole Kidman has decided her incredibly gorgeous hair isn’t gorgeous enough. She frequently seems to do something to it to try and make it “better”. I do wish she should work with what she was blessed with instead of trying to make it all Hollywood Car Wash.
This would have looked BETTER if she had just let the frizzies take over. This looks like 11 herbs and spices and 5 minutes in the deep fryer.
I actually have no problem with her hair in either photo. i gotta agree with dave on this one: the problem is her FACE. i don’t know what she’s doing to it, but i urge her to stop. it’s creepy.
The face is problematic.
Agree 100%. Her face was pretty enough before, but no, not good enough, she had to do “stuff” to it. Same with her hair, it’s beautiful the way nature intended, but no, she has to do stuff to it. I think it’s self loathing, but I already loathe her, so I can’t tell.
I wish she would STOP straightening her hair into submission. She has gorgeous red curls, and this semi blonde/semi red hair just looks so fragile. Hair can only stand up to so much abuse.
She needs to go back and hire whoever it was that did her hair on Moulin Rouge (or go and steal the wigs back, if that’s what they were) AND NEVER LET THEM GO. She was so unspeakably beautiful in that film – I seriously have no idea why she would ever want to deviate from that. The dresses are great, especially the first one, but she looks so odd.
And now that you’ve pointed out the smushed togetherness of her face, it’s all I can see. Oh Nicole, whyyyy?
YES! Bring back “the Satine”. A bit more contrast in the darker red made her look more balanced, and less fragile/wishy-washy.
I am pretty sure those were wigs. GREAT GREAT wigs.
I really like her hair in the first one… It looks cute
same here!
If you squint just right- it’s Carrot Top.
The first hair just looks a touch too twee for that dress (and for her age). There’s a time & a place for multiples of bunched back & cute-clipped hair on the top & side of your head, and the red carpet with that vampy dress just IS NOT it. Might be super cute for the beach, or with capris picking up Sunday Rose from preschool….
The last picture screams FIVE-HEAD AHOY to me. I think she looks better with a touch of bang, or loose side hair to balance it all out.
Hate the day dress. Wish I had her body!
I have a bigger problem with the second hair style. There’s a disconcerting aura of Aileen Wuornos about it. That Oscar’s already been won, Nicole. Dial it back.
I thought she was reprising To Die For.
Her forehead is once again immobile, which I suspect contributes to its apparent expansiveness in photo call.
[Previous post re-posted, what I meant to say]
My thought too — she’s going for her younger looks via hair.
@anny, I also got an immediate To Die For vibe.
I still find that stiff forehead really distracting. Her eyebrows aren’t moving at all in the first picture. Along with staying true to her curly redhead roots, I’d love it if she wasn’t always styling her hair to show off a blinding expanse of abnormally smooth forehead.
She had her hair swept back like that all throughout Cannes. I’m not sure what the deal is, but you’re right: it makes her look 1) bad and 2) old.
With the first dress, I think part of the problem is that the pins are too far back in her head. It looks like it’s trying to be a twenties/thirties-esque finger wave-inspired ‘do, but her front hair is way too harshly pulled back. I can’t speak to how curly hair works, but there are a lot of strands in the back of her hair that are making a really valiant effort at escaping. Unfortunately, it all adds up to (at least in the first few pictures) looking slightly off-kilter. I’m sure Nicole Kidman is a lovely woman who would not kill you with her bare hands and possibly teeth, but the first photo really gives that impression.
I think she looks cute, she always plays with style and sometimes she gets it really, really wrong. She seems to be pretty successful in Cannes.
However, I really, really wish she just had her Days of Thunder hair all the time.
YES. Me too. I hate that she’s killed it. Same with Keri Russell — neither of them do that kind of curly anymore.
my friend has hair like keri russell has but less frizzy and she gets complimented every day on it! seriously we can’t go anywhere without someone saying they love her curly hair!
The last ensemble makes her look like Young ’70s Housewife. And whose idea was that?
Isn’t she growing out bangs? I think they’re at the awkward length where they’re not long enough to stay in a side-sweep without help and far too long to brush forward. She does look best with softer hair, but at least her experiments are interesting.
I actually like the first hair style. But then, I am biased because I have curly, sometimes lopsided, unruly hair. The second hairstyle makes her look oddly bald to me. It’s so odd. I like the dresses though, equally.
I like her hair in the first style. It seems summery and perfect when you need your hair out of your face.
The second style… not so much, she reminds me of Margaret Thatcher and that is never a good look.
I seriously think she should never go anywhere without Keith; he probably looks at hairdos like this and says “oh, baby” in a disappointed voice and strums a plangent note on the guitar and she goes in and brushes it out and yells at her stylist for taking the shine out of her hair, and all is well.
I think the first dress & first hairstyle are both great.
The second hairstyle is too stiff, and the dress is too matronly. Fail both ways.
First dress, I love. She’s testing outfits for the Great Gatsby premiere! The curly hair doesn’t match it, but it would be okay on a casual outfit. At least it loks healthy.
The second dress could be better with a feisty, short do. That hair makes me think of my grandmother, the way she would comb it before rolling it up and pinning it to the back of her head. For a 90 year old, she had great hair.
I think she’s going for a very specific moment in the first look – perhaps hostess at the grand opening of the Chrysler Building. And I mean that in a good way, I adore anything Machine Age.
My immediate reaction to the second look:
Is she doing a Bewitched revival?
I always see that optical illusion with her and wish she would give bangs a try. Her hair styles ultimately seem to be about forehead — every single style is set to emphasize it — and I think she would look so much more relaxed and softer with a little more ease to her hairline.
Nicole’s first hair style would have been glamorous with more volume at the chin line and behind the ears. But that’s a quibble, she looks great.
Forehead has fallen off the wagon, possibly that very morning, because she looked so much better just a few days ago. She has forehead dysmorphia if she didn’t immediately realize that a combed back style showing that great immobile span of flesh was both unattractive and the botox equivalent of falling down drunk. Maybe it’s a cry for help? Cannes intervention?
The Botox is back. Oy veys mir. You can always tell because she looks nuts.
Yes dark red hair a la Moulin Rouge or natural like in Dead Calm- those were the days…
I adore the curly ‘do. I wish my hair would flounce out in psycho ringlets all the time. I’ve got plain boring straight fine bleh meh hair. Hers is full of action and is awesome.
I love the description of her hair as “full of action.” That’s amazing. Also, “psycho ringlets” is pretty great, too. Kudos on your word smithery!
The Botoxed forehead ruins it. It’s like it’s pushng her hairline up, and her eyebrows down.
I love her hair in the first. Looks a little loose but not craycray. Getting ahead of the Gatsby flapper trend that will be appearing once the moofie is released I imagine. I think it suits the dress for sure.
Second one reminds me of Stepford, all of it. Stepford with furniture polish
I sat behind her at an event where the day started off fine and ended in a storm to end all storms. To her credit she didn’t shy away from the rain but it highlighted how bad her hair is now. It’s very straw like and was just frizz, not curls. Maybe this is an attempt to reign it in. Methinks she’s pretty grey under there and it has changed the texture of her hair a lot.
Speaking as someone with dyed grey hair I know of what I speak.
Ah come on.. cut her a break modern day muse.. Flirty Bette Davis..?
“I’d like ta kiss ya, but I just washed my hair.”–as Madge in CABIN IN THE COTTON!
Her complexion is amazing. Her hair, not.
Oh-oh, she’s using that suburban hairdresser again. The last do makes her look matronly and the first one makes her look completely insane.
That 1st dress is a work of art… It is MAJESTIC! I covet every thread! The 2nd outfit is lovely! Her makeup & simple jewelry work on both ensembles, but I don’t like the hair with either of them! Dresses = FAB!!! Hair Styling = FUG!
I actually think this is the youngest she’s looked in ages. And not a “plastic surgery young”. Actual young.
I just wish she’d saved the dress for the premier of “The Great Gatsby”.
I think she sat in her hair dresser’s chair and said, “I want something they will be talking about tomorrow.” Because that’s the only reason you do that to your hair.
Who would have thought that Nicole Kidman could be a butterface…
I feel bad about the fact that when I saw the first photo my first thought was the comedian Carrot Top after surgery.
The sort of ’40s-ish hair with the day dress, I like. To my eye, that works on her. And I join the echoing chorus of all those SO glad she’s gone back to red! Beautiful.
The style oddness with that gorgeous, gorgeous gown, though, reminds me uncomfortably of a haircut I once had that kept me at home a lot until it grew out, because every time I stepped out into the wind it was Instant Crazy Person.
I’m trying to convince myself that maybe this was better in person than in these photos? Kidman’s so lovely, I imagine up close it doesn’t matter what’s been done to her. Right? Maybe? Because it’s such a great gown! And she wore it so very well, in every other way.
I’m glad she’s looking a bit beefier now.
