It occurs to me that I really like the name “Octavia.” It’s so classy. Which is how Ms Spencer looked all weekend, in case you were wondering. Let’s revisit it!

Lovely and classy.
And that shade of pink is gorgeous on her.
Every other fuller-figured actress should flock to Octavia Spencer for her advice and/or stylist. Home runs, all of them. Flattering, beautiful, not boring. Just lovely. (Though, I’m sure Octavia is exhausted, a beaming smile is a great accessory.)
I think Octavia either recently hired a stylist or changed stylists, because all of a sudden her outfits got a lot better. I think that’s pretty typical for someone who is just getting famous.
Totally agree. Lots of full figure ladies have stylists and don’t work it the way she seems to be doing here.
That pink/lilac gown makes her look good-don’t like to get into size debates but its actually good to see someone curvy given there are so may waifs around.
This woman Understands her body and Dresses it. If you get that Ladies in Hollywood you don’t NEED to be wearing the most up to the minute thing. And tou’ll probably look better if you don’t. Watch Octavia, she’s got it going on!
I completely agree! My friends and I were discussing how Melissa McCarthy (who we LOVE) needs to hit up Octavia Spencer’s stylist.
That’s the only thing that bothered me, actually. That she wasn’t showing her teeth in any of these pictures, only curving her lips into a smile. It made her seem mildly unhappy and sort of uncomfortable.
“Contrary to what some people may think, “appropriate” is not a dirty word.”
This is so true. Appropriate is also not a synonym for boring. There are some folks in Hollywood who really need to get the memo on that.
love her!
Adored the pink one and liked the wrap with the print. The other two were kind of meh for me though. And how cute that the Glee star’s (sorry too lazy to go back and look up his name) tie and her dress matched.
Apparently, she and Josh Sussman were on “Wizards of Waverly Place” together. Judging by his tie, I suspect he was her date. Which I think is sort of cool, actually. And she looks absolutely wonderful in all of these pictures.
That yummy lavendar dress is how we wanted Jennifer Hudson to be dressed the year she won her Oscar and ALT got to her first with the space bolero. Fabulous. Go, Octavia!
Also, that lace dress rocks hard.
It’s so refreshing to see someone w/a non-starlet shaped body wear clothes that both fit and complement her curves. All of these are fabulous – well-played, Octavia!
Well said! Totally agree
Yeah, she looks amazing, voluptuous, SEXY. And she’s got great legs working for her in the other looks. Someone – she or her stylist – has really done their homework on what lines are flattering on HER figure, instead of just getting a larger version of a dress that looks great on a different figure. Time well spent; she looks great.
THIS is how to dress a voluptuous figure. Way to go, stylist!
I totally forgot about ALT’s hand of fug with Jennifer Hudson. Octavia, stay away! But seriously, she looks fantastic, and I love the varied colors/fabrics she has worn. Being a full-figured girl myself, it’s easy, once you find a style of dress that fits you well, to wear it over and over, but she has changed things up just enough not to keep them too boring. Her hair also look gorgeous down in those other photos. Can’t decide how I want to see it for the Oscars.
I love her from the waist up in that lilac dress, but on the red carpet I thought the ruching was doing her no favors. She looked almost hunched over. Or maybe she just wasn’t standing up straight, in which case — pull your shoulders back! You are a talented actress getting well-deserved recognition. Own yourself.
Or maybe it was just the ruching.
I don’t hate her Globes dress, but I found the rhinestone applique a little cheap looking–however the dress looks very flattering on her. (MELISSA MCCARTNEY TAKE NOTE!)
The other three dress? BANGIN’!!!
She was a knockout, and she always is really, I can’t decide who was best dressed: Octavia, SWINTON, Evan Rachel Wood or Nicole Kidman, all of them were gorgeous.
Vanity Fair and Fisker Automotive forgot to add “fun run for the cure” on their invite.
JillB, there are no words for how much I love this comment. BWA!
I think Ms. Spencer looked lovely in all of the dresses, but my favorite is the lace one. As nice as the draping is on the others, the lace dress shows that A Woman with Curves doesn’t have to go all Grecian Goddess to look amazing. As a big girl myself who’s fond of tailored clothing, it’s really nice to see.
And I loved her shoes with that dress — very sexy. She looked fantastic (good hair + makeup, too) in every pic. Now just smile, Octavia! I did see a picture of her at the Globes smiling and she was so gorgeous.
This just makes me so happy. It is fantastic to see a voluptuous woman wearing lovely clothes and looking so great. I am so jealous that I didn’t copy the lavender dress for my wedding dress, when I was much curvier (the very expensive dress made for me was ghastly).
Had no idea she was dating Art Garfunkle!
she looks incredibly elegant.
Well-played, Jacob Ben-Israel. Coordinating with your date is classy.
Love the dress, colour and the makeup. I wasn’t a fan of the swarovski applique in the midsection BUT she looked amazing!
This reminds me of Angelina Jolie’s gown, in the way the rutching is so figure-flattering.
Octavia is slaying fools left and right! WERK gurl
She looks great, but mostly I’m commenting to say that my parents almost named me Octavia (I was very nearly born on 8/8/88), and I have been thankful ever since that they didn’t. I mean, imagine the potential nicknames. It’s enough to paralyze a child in horror.
Lordy, I’m wearing SHOES older than you!
Octavia is a beautiful and elegant name. It suits her. It’s OK, ochito, you would have liked the name had you ended up with it.
She looks FABULOUS! This is what Melissa McCarthy should be doing… Embrace the curves, don’t hide them! Well played, Octavia!
I have only one prayer of a god who seems indifferent, otherwise: That I never have to see the mortified and gaunt Octavia shilling for Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig or whatever starve-yerself-so-ya-gain-it-all-back-n’-we’ll-be-here-waitin’ mob of fools. Spare us especially from the CGI version of Octavia as a death’s head twig blathering foolishly with her formerly glorious womanly self. I don’t want to see regal Octavia sacrificed to sell Trademarked Diet Twinkies Sprayed With “Butter” flavoured plastic sauce.
Octavia has the cutest smile ever. She also looks fabulous! I love it when a woman works her curves!!
She is so beautiful. And she looks gorgeous in those dresses (I’m not nuts about the black one, but the other three are jaw-dropping). Way to go!
WOW! That lilac one is gorgeous. As is she.
She is beautiful! She could wear a burlap sac and rock it.
I want those giant labradorite earrings so much it hurts. They are just stunning and perfect.
Kudos to her stylist.
I so very badly want both of those wrap dresses. Where did they come from? How can I get them?
I still laugh to pee when I see reruns of her stint in Ugly Betty as the crazy inmigration officer who chases Betty’s dad… She haseither impeccable taste or the best stylist ever… She’s more than curvacious or voluptuous… she’s really fat -the word IS in the dictionary, for chrissake- but she’s working the hell out of it! I wouldn’t say she looks or pretends to look sexy, but she does prove you can look beautiful, atractive and elegant comfortably in your own size, without the hiding and the pinching of flesh.
She looks BEAUTIFUL! Talk about someone who truly knows their body and what it looks good in (or has a stylist who knows her body and what it looks good in.) It is refreshing to see someone of her proportions- normal proportions by American standards- work them beautifully. This is how larger women everywhere should be dressing- it’s sexy, has a shape, and makes her look wonderful. I’m thinner than her but would love to look as graceful and confident as she does in these dresses. Bravo.
