Mostly Well-Played: Wills and Kate’s Canadian Adventure

These two kids, you guys. These two. I look at a LOT of pictures of celebrities on the regular, and all I’m saying is that they seriously SERIOUSLY look like people who (a) are legitimately having a blast running around Canada together and (b) are legitimately mad-crazy about each other. I think one of the reasons Wills and Kate have resonated with the public so much is because they really do look like they enjoy each other’s company — and after years of celebs pretending they’re not dating/refusing to walk the red carpet together/being together primarily for PR/getting pissy if the public acts interested in their personal life at times other than those during which said celeb would like to leverage his personal life for PR, it’s SO REFRESHING to see two people out in public who seem to be enjoying themselves, and each other, period. That gal does have awesome hair, but wearing it down like that for the cooking lessons would be a big health code violation in the kitchen.

The fact that she is an Anne of Green Gables fan makes me love her more. If I could get away with it I would run all over PEI in that sailor dress. Wills is like her Gilbert…
    I so need a life….

She is completely adorable. And he’s a cutie pie, balding or not! He so clearly adores her, and that in iteself makes him attractive. (And what a contrast between these 2 and CWitt & Albert. THAT is not going to end well.)

I read on the Daily Mail that the closed toe shoe and panty hose combo are Royal Protocol. Yes. So it’s not like she has a choice. Poor thing.

I have been waiting for this post all weekend. We have days and days of the Royal Tour left, I can’t wait!

    love love love!

question though… is she required to wear hose since she is a Royal? I notice that she seems to almost always be wearing them when at public events. anyone know the sartorial rule on this?

Wow… espadrilles with pantyhose scare the crap out of me. The rest of the looks were definitely in the well-played spectrum. Extra kudos for getting her hair out of her face – I love that look on her!

Even worse than the fact that she’s wearing pantyhose with espadrilles is the fact that she probably CHOSE to do so: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/ask_the_answer_bitch/b249564_does_kate_middleton_have_wear_those.html

I live in AZ. The LOW temp this week is hovering around 89. The very thought of pantyhose gives me hives.

There was actually a video showing that Anne Catherine was playfully shoving Wills a little on the pier, a pretend shove into the water. That would have been fabulous! Well, it shows, as all of this, they are madly in love. And don’t only have a room but a quaint cottage and a prospective palace.

Honestly though … they looked THE BEST for the dragon boat races! Totally natural, relaxed and having fun. Awesome.

And although we give Kate (oops, Catherine) so many props for looking great – great hair, great outfits, adorable little maple leaf hat – Wills deserves his props too. I guess he’s had lots of practice, but he sure does wear his custom suits well. Yet he looks best with an open collar, or in jeans, or polo gear. They are like a perfect royal couple right out of central casting.

They make me happy, too. Oh, so lovely, so happy, so charming! I would have (on anyone else) had one or two quibbles with some of the other outfits (I love the overall effect of and the individual pieces in the Canada Day outfit, but there’s perhaps just a little much going on with the lines of the dress, the clutch, and the hat….) but you know, she just SELLS it and looks so graceful and gracious. Steph, many a night I dreamed of Gilbert, too–I may have actually squealed when I got to the PEI dress. Yes! Themed dressing, but pitch-perfect! Nothing will convince me that she didn’t wear that as an homage to the Anne-girl, either (although my mother tells me Princess Diana ALSO wore a blue sailor dress to PEI on her visit).

On behalf of my country, I feel obligated to note that, although I bet you’re totally right about the in-flight robes, the flight from Ottawa to PEI is almost two hours. CANADA’S REALLY BIG, Y’ALL.

That said, I am SO happy that GFY is covering their tour! The Artist formerly known as Kate continues to be ridiculously flawless, and Will is working a lot of those looks, especially the open collar with the jacket! They are adorbs.

Love love everything here, but man, do we need to go on a Free Kate’s Legs campaign? Poor girl, having to wear hose in the summer, and no open toed shoes. (Okay, her life has enough awesome in it that maybe, just maybe, she can handle that).

I love the homage to Anne, and that they’re so cute with each other all the time! Just adorable.

  35. Jen

Doesn’t Kate just make you sick? Stunningly pretty, great figure, amazing hair, wardrobe most girls would kill for and married to a man she’s crazy about, who adores her in return and just happens to be very rich and the future King of England! And to top it off she seems so normal and nice that you can’t possibly hate her!!!

I’m not the biggest fan of the purple outfit as I think it makes her look a trifle elderly but love the blue and grey dresses, as well as the Anne Shirley homage.

  36. Andrea

There’s a hilarious picture of Kate during the cooking session where she’s holding a lobster and has this look of ‘ew’ on her face.

Also, there’s a picture of her with an actor dressed up as Anne. Awesomeness.

  37. BigTex
    0

No, he’s not her bosom friend, he’s her kindred spirit! And puffed sleeves would have been a better homage, but I guess we would have had to fug her for them.

@Carol, love the “y’all” from the apparent Canada expert!

I want to be angry at the monarchy for making Kate wear hosiery with those espadrilles, but after reading about that poor kidnapped hostage passport-bereft Monagesque princess, it puts it all in perspective, you know?

The looks are all fabulous, but I love the gray dress/sparkly shoes combo best.

Also, I would like to say that while it is tragic and wrong that genetics have robbed Wills of his once-fetching mop of blonde hair, he really does have an incredible body, doesn’t he? And he appears to be the last man in Western Civilization who knows a good tailor.

They are positively heart-warming. I do worry a little bit about Kate, who is visibly thinner post-wedding. I saw a photo of her from about a year ago and her face and neck are fuller and it suited her well. Her neck and hands really don’t look as healthy. Just the same, that million-dollar (ahem, pound) smile erases any negativity.

You know what I LOVE? She’s worn the white dress before (the one in the maple leaf hat) and I’m pretty sure those are the same espadrilles she had on the day before her wedding, there were some pics of her talking to random people on the street.
Oh God, why do I know this…

I have been looking at pictures of these two all weekend and eagerly awaiting this post! Glad to have the pantyhose explained– most of the time I actually find it pretty hard to tell unless it’s really blatant. At least (thank God!) she picks sheer hose that are very similar to her skin color so it’s not too terrible. Guess this means no open toed shoes, then? Bummer.

Anyway, on to the outfits! Personally, I do have some quibbles with aspects of some of them, but as a whole, I think she looks stunning and well put together and they look like they are having a lot of fun and totally in love– I love the casual pics from PEI. I love the sailor dress and I love the purse that she’s wearing with the Canada Day outfit.

Maybe not all women have a problem with wearing hosiery. Maybe there are women out there who feel like hosiery completes an outfit, or just likes to look professional (or needs to look royal.) I don’t hear anyone crying for Wills because he’s in a suit and tie. Actually he was praised for it in a previous comment. I appreciate wearing a suit and tie once in a while, but I don’t have the same hatred against them as it seems women have against hosiery.

Yes they’re cute together but your sycophantic adoration has just tipped memover the edge. They’re not celebrities, his job is to fly aircraft hers is to, well actually durinh her 8 years of waiting she did very little. It’s a mere accident of birth that Wills didnt marry Paris Hilton or Amber Rose.
All this finery that your’re slavishly adoring is paid for by my tax pounds and I quite frankly would rather have more hospitals or pay for geriatric care. I’m not an out & out Republican (of the British kind), as a globally respected head of state I can stomach the queen and the £36 million a year she costs us, but she has a huge family that I also pay for. Your breathless adoration of The Royal Couple is a wind-up.

She’s too thematic with her wardrobe on this trip, but is appropriately dressed and seems very nice. She could still use a sandwich – hopefully she was introduced to a plate of poutine while in Montreal – and the hair-touching and eyeliner need a break, but they seem to be having fun.

GFY girls, don’t listen to the haters – she’s an extraordinary case study in good fashion, and THAT HAIR. I just can’t get over that hair.

@Eric: It looks as though it might have been chillyish in PEI, but when they were in Ottawa, it was over 30°C in the sun (several royal-watchers who’d been waiting outside for hours were rushed away to get intravenous fluids by paramedics) and HUMID. I expect by your username that you’ve never WORN hosiery, but let me assure you, a coat of nylon over your skin, and particularly your crotch region (euch!) is far, FAR more uncomfortable than a tailored jacket — and I imagine Wills’ jackets are made of the finest in breathable, light wool and natural fibres. At least Kate gets to hop back into air-conditioned limos after making her appearances, but still, wearing hosiery in heat and still looking unflappable is — somethin’.

My mother, for some reason, hated that grey dress. I saw my fam on the weekend (near Ottawa, which is how I know about the heat — personally) and watched a bit of the breathless, play-by-play media coverage, and she went on and on about it. “What IS that plain thing? A t-shirt? It looks JUST AWFUL. Oh, she is way too thin!” “No, mum, it’s tailored, see? Look at the collar and the sleeves.” (I love the grey dress, and it’s the only thing I’ve seen her in so far that I’d like to steal for my personal closet.)

There was a longer article about this guy, Ottawa designer Frank Sukhoo, in the actual paper Ottawa Citizen: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/royal-visit/Royal+stitches+From+sketch+dress/5030807/story.html — apparently he’s been making quite a thing lately of copying Kate’s style for well-heeled Ottawa women.

I do agree that these two are meaningless as political figures, although it IS interesting to contemplate them along the lines of Joseph Campbell and the original “sacred” function of kings (a function we now call “celebrity”).

Hey, I wore the Statue of Liberty crown to the Rockefeller Plaza’s observation deck during my 30th birthday NY trip.

But I bet Kate would pull it off much better than I did.

Wills was quite dashing with the open collar look. More sportswear for the royals!!! And yes, his suits, ahem, “suit” him.
I guess one benefit to always having to wear closed-toed shoes is that you can have some wacky pedicure fun that only you and your hubby see…silver lining?

  56. Kristan

She is so gorgeous. Every outfit is a hit, and her legs are killer. Also, can I just say GUH to Wills’s open collar in picture 3? Or is wrong to objectify royalty that way?

She’s wearing something different in every photo. He’s looks like he’s wearing the same suit, shirt, and tie in each one. How long did this trip last? Did she change her clothes like 10 times in one day? Or was he wearing the same shirt for 3 days? Change it up a little, Wills!

LOVE the grey dress. LOVE the AOGG inspired dress. Mostly, I LOVE that she’s decided to listen to me (and me only, I’m convinced) and tie her hair back. She looks gorgeous.

I second the desire to have them come to Vancouver. Just because you’ve already been here, Wills, doesn’t mean Kate shouldn’t get to come see us!

I LOVE them. She is awesome. And can we talk about how SMOKIN Wills looks in the purple dress picture with his sexily unbuttoned collar? RAWR.

I am absolutely one of those people who didn’t think I cared but totally do.

  65. Jessie the Brit
    0

I’m British (hence the name). At a guess, I imagine Kate wears hold ups rather than tights because tights (pantyhose) can give an unsightly affect around the middle which may show through clothes. British women often wear tights or hold ups even on a night out. This North American obsession with ridiculing people for wearing flesh coloured tights is rather bizarre and irritating. Her legs always look nice as she buys expensive, slightly shimmering ones, which is more than I can say for a lot of the women featured on this website that go bare-legged. I am sure you agree that you can’t always wear black or nearly black hose. Kate has worn flesh coloured tights as far back as the roller disco pictures. I’m afraid European women don’t have the weather for acquiring nicely tanned legs and its often too chilly to not wear tights- , so perhaps Kate is simply used to wearing them and feels they finish an outfit.

She also wore that grey dress to the tree planting, a viewing of some troops, and to visit a kids’ hospital. These two look like a million buck-a-dingdongs. Best of wishes to ‘em! And to Kate, and Albert and Charlene.

  68. Melly
    0

But I do think some of her dresses are over-tailored, and yes, she needs 5-10 lbs on her frame. If they’d go easy on adhering to every curve, she’d look just as good but could lean over and move about a little better. The best example of what I like is the creme dress and jacket coming down from the plane. A little room to breathe in that.

  69. lak

I wish her clothes were as tailored as his. The high street clothes need to go. Only the two tailored dresses looked awesome ie the grey catherine walker and the sailor mcqueen on PEI.

@melly ‘sigh’ why not honour the living parent. Charles also contributed to their upbringing. In all the many interviews and palace gossip, everyone including diana herself, always said that he was a great father. In the rush to venerate her, why denigrate him. All the informal pics of him with them shows a very much involved loving father. Sometimes people can break the cycle, and clearly he did, even though he doesn’t telegraph it or trumpet it to the media.

I think Catherine dresses so well. Berating someone in her position for not taking risks with her palette or wearing tights or kitten heals completely ignores all the restrictions she’s placed under. Considering that, how lovely she manages to look is a miracle. As a 22 year-old who likes to dress conservatively without looking frumpy, I think she pretty much nails it. I would eat soap to get that grey dress.

And the fact that she’s clearly excited to see the home of Anne Shirley makes me love her all the more. That dress is seriously adorable, and a 2011 Anne would totally wear it.

  75. Erin

I don’t want to sound completely ridiculous and overuse the word “love,” but I love them. And this is from someone who would’ve been riding with Paul Revere during the Revolutionary War if given the chance… but I just love *these* royals. :)

she’s doing great. katie holmes could take a few notes from her – they have similar builds, and katie clearly does not know how to dress her body.

I am getting disturbingly LEAVE KATE ALONE about the new Duchess when people are critical about her conservative fashion choices. Because yes, they ARE adorable, her smile is the best and Wills can wear the heck out of a suit. But his tailor needs to talk to hers, because that purple dress really needed a few more inches taken in to flatter her super slim figure.

  79. jenny
    0

Love the gray and purple! Canada Day was a bit crazy…but it’s Canada Day!

@sullenroyals, politics aside, aspects of this kind of travel can be a thumping bore, and totally exhausting…and that’s before you get to gracefully dealing with constant scrutiny and criticism. So to do it all and make it look easy is pretty admirable in my book.

  80. anna
    0

Another Brit here, and I always wear tights (usually pretty much un-noticeable ones) even living in CA – unless it’s super hot. Makes the skin tone on my legs look a lot smoother and it’s easier to wear with most shoes than bare sweaty feet. Anyway, in pic 11, what’s the gold stripy stype image on her feet? Something obvious, no doubt..?

  81. Mukel

To all you Nude-Hose Police out there, SFW? I personally wear nude hose on most other-than-casual occasions, because my legs are sometimes a little whatever–blotchy, or have the odd razor-bump. I buy good-quality, sheer ones, and they smooth everything out nicely. Sure, I peel them off with glee as soon as I get home, but I would much rather endure the slight discomfort (and the censure of the Nude-Hose Police) than engage in yet another unwinnable battle with my leg-hair follicles and my skin. Waging such a battle successfully (with all the constant loofah-ing and lotioning and spraying and shaving and waxing–yikes!) requires much more time, expense and discomfort than slipping on a pair of hose, and frankly, much more than I am willing to invest. I have more important things to think about (like posting comments here).

I liked all but the blue dress she wore to the Sunday evening church service. The fit made it looks almost like she had a tiny corset on, which I know is not true. I guess I am saying the dress looked a bit stiff. Otherwise, well done, indeed!

She is so damn pretty, it hurts. To be only half that pretty… And the hair. OH DEAR GOD THE HAIR! I desperately, desperately covet that hair!

  89. ChaChaheels

Is Wills wearing grey corduroy jeans? In July? I bet that’s a mistake he won’t make again (aside from the fact that corduroy jeans are awkward anyway). As for pantyhose and espadrilles, that photo made her look about 60 years old from the ankles down. In any case, it’s been in the 90′s lately, temperature wise, and from my experience of the Maritimes, it’s always a bit hotter there in the summer than it is where I am (southern Ontario, which has also been pretty hot lately). Hope they have a lot of air conditioned rooms they can run into for relief.

  90. Andrew

Are they seriously not the cutest ever? I saw them in Ottawa on Canada Day, and while any other person wearing that hat at any other time would be ridiculous, it was just so perfect! Also, the Reiss dress she was wearing was apparently the same one she wore to her engagement party, which means the girl recycles! These two have seriously won the hearts of much of Canada, and I hope they perform equally as well in California later this week!

  91. Andrew

She didn’t bring a ‘dresser’ or stylist along with her on this trip. Apparently this is a big first for the royals. She did, however, bring along a hair stylist which may explain why her hair looks perfect even when it’s being blown by arctic force winds in the Northwest Territories.

Another Western European here who won’t go to work (and I guess, for Kate, as much fun as she’s having it still is ‘work’) without hold ups or tights. It’s the 6th of July in Dublin today and it’s overcast and 17 degrees celcius (which is about 62F). So it’s cold here and in the UK, all summer long. We had a nice day on Saturday and Sunday (about 23C) and that’ll be it for about a month. So we wear tights/hold ups to deal with the cold and distinguish between summer and winter (when we were thick black tights). Also, there is no chance to get nice tanned legs as our weather sucks!

Tights rule! And so does Kate – any attempt to “Free Kate’s Legs” from that side of the Atlantic is going to bring the wrath of this side of the pond!

Look at the original/zoomed-in version of the glittery shoes photo… are there weird clear stripes on the inside of her left foot? What on earth are they??

And also, to get in on the hosiery debate – I live in Australia, and I wear (sheer, tan-coloured, good-quality) pantyhose every day to work, and I like it. Even in my gross-humid 30C summers. They make my legs look better and despite what some of my colleagues believe, I just don’t think bare legs are appropriate for my corporate office job, especially when you’re also wearing a suit. That said, I don’t generally wear them for social outings (unless it’s really cold, or some sort of cocktail function).

LOVE that she’s getting serious mileage out of that pair of nude patent heels, just like a normal person :)

They are special stockings to keep her feet from slipping in her shoes. Here is a link if you are interested: http://www.johnlewis.com/88411/Product.aspx

Can we just talk about HIM for a moment? Before the wedding, he (of the ‘clearly thinning at a young age’ hair was guilty of letting it get a bit long…and flyaway. Making it look thinner). For whatever reason, he seems to have gotten it cropped a bit closer for Canada. HUGE improvement Wills! (That, and you SMILE incessantly now!)

Is Kate not allowed to wear sandals of any type? Are toes that offensive to the Royal Family? I am really tired of pumps all the time.

Love them both, and think Wills looks great in his relaxed gear. I kinda heart his belt. And the fact that in the church pic, Kate’s dress matches the hymn book? Love it!

Okay, Michelle: the Canada Day clutch is from Anya Hindmarch, and if you want a close-up, this is the only one I’ve found: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/07/bill-and-cathy-cambridge-in-canada-day-2.html

Lori: if you want the Anne Shirley dress, it’ll cost a pretty penny, since it’s Alexander McQueen. Fabulous!

I’ve said it on a comment before: Canada has been hot (at elast ottawa/montreal) this past week. Like, not “Oh you live in CANADA so summer must be a light snowfall.” But legit, 85 degrees and very humid. So royal handlers: please let the girl wear short sleeves/no pantyhose. Let her BREATHE. But also, please pass on her secret for wearing long sleeves and stockings and managing to look fresh as a daisy while gallavanting outdoors while I schvitz in my underwear in my apt. Thanks.

Um, sorry to be negative nellie, here, but does anyone thing she is like crazy skinny? I mean, I hope its natural and not pressure filled, but I do feel like she could do with a few scones with clotted cream.

@Katharine: I just realized that The Artist Formerly Known as Kate is probably wearing silk stockings, not nylon. Wouldn’t that be a whole lot more comfortable?

I wear pantyhose everyday to work in DC. It is hot and humid here but I feel much more professional and put together with hose. Also, I was taught that it is a sign of respect. If you are meeting someone from a different generation who grew up believing that wearing pantyhose is how a professional woman dresses than they expect you to do the same. Why would you want to risk offending anyone, especially if they are making a special trip to see you? Really, tights, hose, whatever you call them are not the end of the world. Same with closed toed shoes. To me it is unprofessional to wear open-toed shoes.

@Nina – I didn’t know there was so much technology in hosiery! Thanks for the link :)

@KT – I have to agree. Every time I see her, no matter what she’s wearing the first thing I can think is “wow, she is TOO SKINNY”. She’s been painfully thin for a while now and it doesn’t look natural, to me it’s definitely a diet/exercise thing. I have a hard time putting it all down to stress because she’s not exactly new at this “royal spotlight” caper.

It can’t be healthy for her body to be that tiny – where do all her organs fit?? I just hope she’s not causing herself any damage.

I love them and they are truly adorable together.

But can someone PLEASE discuss the fact that the eyeliner she insists on wearing on her lower lids makes her look either crazy, drunk, old, or tired? Her sister does it too. Why, God, why?! Beautiful women like that deserve better make-up tips.

    aww :)

I’m a bit of a cynic, I fear, and so I never allow myself to believe that ANY celeb couple is split-proof.

But gosh these guys are cute together. Apart from the royalty bit, they do seem beautifully normal. They have the same cheerful, delighted-to-be-here expressions that most newlyweds do. :)

Everything else aside, I am sorry to burst everyone’s bubble but I believe those shoes w/ the grey dress are NOT sparkly, but rather, lizard skin. She is still by and large lovely though, the lack of sparkly shoes notwithstanding.

I love that they look ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED to be doing whatever is they’re doing whenever it is they’re doing it.

Nikki, above: Protocol discourages public display of affection. Besides, if they WERE touchy-feely, they’d be gawked at by millions of people all over the world, which must be kind of off-putting.

Finally, bring back pantyhose. I love that Kate wears them: they’re light, sheer and very natural, and it’s a quick and easy way to look ladylike and polished. I am so tired of the tyranny of moisturiser, exfoliants and fake tan.

I’m not convinced she has on pantyhose with the espadrilles…her legs are that tan. But she certainly has them on with the (not really that shiny) shoes in the other shoe photo…and these are SHINY hose!
