Well Played, Meryl Streep, If Not Sartorially

Meryl Streep — although an amazing actress and someone you always want to invite to the Golden Globes, because changes are high both that she will get drunk and that she will win — is not the world’s snappiest dresser. Sometimes she shows up places looking like she’s put no thought into what she’s wearing at all, which is probably true, and honestly, we rather like her that way. Actually, we like her, period. Let’s examine why, using these photos from last night’s benefit for the Christoper and Dana Reeve Foundation.

This should be titled “Streeply Played”.

  2. Lina

Oh, goodness, that last slide — now I’m all teary thinking about the Reeves. *wipes eyes*

That said, I didn’t recognize Meryl. Maybe I’m not used to seeing her hair quite that blonde? I don’t know. Mainly the glasses and outfit keep reminding me of one of my old bosses when I worked at a library in college. That, and that she looks one pointy hat away from a day job at Hogwarts.

  3. Carol

I mean, you see? Meryl Streep is just awesome. She can stand between 2 people who are VOGUE-ING with all their might and just BE. She’s relaxed, not at ALL insecure about anything while the other lady is all “Is my tan, tan enough? Is this dress sexy enough? Is my hair pulled back tight enough? Am I fierce enough?!!!”

Meryl Streep is fierce because she is Meryl Streep. The woman is fabulous even when she’s asleep. I want to be even 1% of her when I grow up.

  4. Carol

P.S. The Reeves children. BLIMEY. That’s some amazing genes!

  5. Carolina Girl

Meryl Streep is what happens when you base your career on talent and hard work instead of silicone and spray tans. Unlike some actresses, she doesn’t have to put on ten pounds of slap to be who she is. She just IS. That’s what makes her so damned awesome. The same goes for SWINTON.

  6. Miranda

TWO THINGS: 1. Meryl Streep is not TOO SERIOUS for hair product, she is just too awesome. She is famous for being really really good at her job, and I applaud her happily taking advantage of that fact in order to go out any which way. She and HBC are on the same continuum of Don’t Give A Fuck, with Meryl falling I think between HBC and Whoopi Goldberg. This is a good place to be.

    2. I went to elementary school with Christopher Reeve’s nephew, and he was ALSO very good-looking (even at that age). Imagine a tan, blond Reeve and you get the idea. I didn’t care yet (I really didn’t notice boys until I was about fifteen), but I remember all the other girls in sixth grade were just FAWNING. True story.

  7. Alix

Okay, apparently I’m cutting off my own name in the comments today… stunned by the power of the immortal STREEP. Can we all-cap her from now on, like SWINTON?

  8. Steph

God, I just want to go to a pub and have a beer with that woman. I second Alix’s call for a CAPS NEED. STREEP.

    • Anne B

      I concur.

But we should extend the word, like so: STREEEEEEEEEEP. She’s just that incredible.

I think I read somewhere that in real life, Meryl and her husband live on a farm. Not like, a vanity farm where what they really have is million dollar horses that someone else takes care of. I mean, a pigs and chickens and cows farm – her husband is really really a farmer joe, and they take care of said farm stock together.

Also, one time she was on a red carpet wearing a gown and when asked what she was wearing she said “X Designer – I wore this to the Oscars in 1979″. And then she went on to say that she recycles her red carpet dresses all the time, because she can fit into them and why waste them?

I’ve loved her even more deeply ever since. :)

    • Carol

      “Vanity farm”!!! Bless.

This story also makes me love STREEP even more.

  10. Hollie

As everyone has said, she is awesome. I also heart those young’uns, such a difficult to live through, when not celebs yourself and have to deal with the media attention…all seem so unscathed and normal.
Having said that, I would have loved to see the dress without such a cardiganny cardi. Some sequins on it perhaps?

  11. Big Noise

Does anyone know how old the Reeve children are and who raised the youngest one after Dana? The other two (different mother) were older when Christopher died. And yes, I’m too lazy today to Google, :) .

  12. Julia

I want her glasses. And to go out for drinks with her. Because she rocks.

  13. Julie

@Big Noise; I think I’ve read somewhere that Robin Williams and his then wife had some sort of custody of the youngest Reeves. Williams was one of Reeves’ closest friends from what I understood.

    • Steph

I have heard that as well. Robin Williams made a very moving tribute to Christopher Reeves when he (Robin) won a Golden Globe. I can’t remember the exact poem, but I know it ended with “goodnight, sweet prince”.

  14. Trace

Meryl may be sartorially challenged at times but she’s Meryl Motherf**king Streep – she rocks and she can wear whatever the hell she wants! Also facially she has an almost ageless look and hasn’t ODed on the cosmetic surgery like a lot of actresses her age. At 60-something she looks gracious and timeless.

  15. Deborah Stultz

I can’t wait to see what she wears this weekend to KC Honors events!

  16. vandalfan

She’s a shining example to all the young starlettes out there. Focus on your art, not your T and A, and the attention will take care of itself. But mentioning the Reeves always puts a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat. (I didn’t know about the Robin Williams connection. Off to Google!)

  17. Laura C

Man, I am not joining the Meryl Streep lovefest. Aside from thinking she’s among the most overrated actors out there, she just always looks so damn pleased with herself. If you could bottle smug, she could go into business.

    • Lindy

I don’t dislike MS, but I do get smug from her, too. And, Tim Gunn said that when she acts like dressing nicely is beneath her, she’s really demonstrating her contempt for everyone who does try–or something to that effect and I had to agree with him. No one’s asking her to be a fashionista, but combing her hair would be nice.

  18. AK

I also love her low-key ways, but at the same time, I secretly wish she’d rock her Devil Wears Prada style all the time. Her hair was just gorgeous in it she really rocked the sky-high heels they dressed her in. Who doesn’t love a good makeover?

I’m not sure where people get smug from. When I’ve seen her interviewed, she always seems a tad nervous and flustered. Maybe people are interpreting “awkward interviewee” as “smug”.

  19. Moi

I don’t think she’s smug or thinks she’s above fashion, but I also do wish she’d glam it up a bit. She’s terrific-looking, with what seems like a winning personality and sense of humor, so what’s the deal? Hiding behind schlump is just as disingenuous as being a tartlet.

  20. Caroleena Stantonova

I believe Her Royal Streepness is resting a bit too heavily on her costume laurels. And her hair…WTyou-know-what. One might deduce Meryl believes that by merely showing up at these functions is a gift in itself: “Be grateful, you plebians!”

  21. Megan

I saw that picture of MS and Alec Baldwin, and I thought to myself “Man, those two would have such great on-screen chemistry, so they should just do a film together. How great would that be?”

Because I have completely and totally repressed “It’s Complicated” from my memory, that’s why.

  22. Geemee

I like her glasses a lot and I think I might like that dress, even tho it screams “Ren fest” a bit. Too bad she had two layers covering it.

  23. Mahastee

I love her, I think she just gets better with age. But I do wish she would wear her coat on her shoulders, where it belongs.

    Merry christmas!!!

  25. J

I went to Vassar with one of her daughters and Meryl Streep was a regular visitor to campus (for Board events and fundraisers and parents’ weekends). Her kid (who looks JUST like her) was totally normal–at least from what I saw, she was a year or two below me but I did have classes with her. So was Meryl Streep. She never acted above it all, she was always happy to talk with anyone who approached her and she genuinely cares about her Alma Mater and the students who currently attend.

  26. Vivian

Meryl is the bomb! I think she’s too busy living and doesn’t make time to have her hair and makeup done professionally or have a sylist. She’s been making public appearances for decades and probably got tired of all the primping. This is just my personal theory. She also strikes me as a little flighty and scattered, but she’s also obviously intelligent. But what I love about her the best, is her fabulous sense of humor and lust for life. She isn’t starved and carved into Hollywood plastic-ness. She is having a bad hair day, horrid in fact, but it isn’t getting her down.

    • zoie

AMEN………when will people just give it a rest?

      • Kate

        Agreed.

This is one of the few actresses who I don’t think does “fake.” She just is. Perhaps she seems “smug,” but, I mean, she’s Meryl Streep? You know? I bet in real life (as the person who went to school with her child says) she’s quite normal and open. She could certainly hire a stylist and look even more amazing, but I (she!) just can’t be bothered about it. If I had her dollars and connection (and her FACE at 62!!!!!!), you can bet I’d be working it for all I was worth. But she doesn’t need to! I don’t find this “smug,” just self assured and kind of refreshing in today’s world of trying too hard starlets, that if they DON’T try too hard get crushed by their “adoring” public.

So, long story short, I never am thinking ‘OMG! MUST HAVE HER CLOTHES!!!!” but I am almost always thinking, “wow, this is a woman who can teach the world what it means to age gracefully and acknowledge her talent without being even a bit smug or condescending.” She just works for me. She is a role model for girls to look up to. This is what it means to embrace your strengths. I suppose the woman could be a total harpy, but I just don’t think so. She was not a typically stunning woman in her younger days, but I just love her. Her attitude appeals to me, as does her effortless grace.

And seriously, she looks freaking amazing. This is a woman who has blossomed as she’s gotten older. Another amazing thing she can show us: women can and do become more beautiful inside and out as they age. Woo woo!!!

I just can’t find it in me to criticize her, and I am an unrelenting critical bitch when it comes down to it…

  27. Lin

    Fur is never “well played”.

  28. EileenOh

Meryl is divine and I have loved her always. But what I couldn’t help noticing is the agressively robust brown of Alec Baldwin’s hair. Of course, he’s dating a fetus, so perhaps a little over-reliance on Grecian Formula or Mr. Clairol???

  29. Andrew S.

Meryl muthafuckin’ Streep being Meryl muthafuckin’ streep ;3

    And bless the Reeves kids.

  30. Az

Please tell me my eyes are not deceiving me and Meryl is actually crossing her eyes in that picture with the Gorgas. Because that would make it even more delicious. And quite possibly MY Christmas card for this holiday season!
