Scanning through the list, it occurs to me that this Oscars was all a bit too safe! There were plenty of lovely dresses, but none that were utterly, undeniably breathtaking.
And worse, there were no over-the-top, hilarious failures (like Uma in that milk maid dress!).
I voted for Jessica Chastain as the best, and Katy Perry as the worst – but Perry was just an an after party, not the ceremony!
I hope next year has more risk taking and originality.

Hey, in the 1st poll it says Diane Lane (who wasn’t there) & in the 2nd it says Diane Kruger! And, it’s Salma HayEk!!!

    • Sajorina
      0

      And, it’s ShaIlene, not Shaliene!

      • Sajorina
        0

How can Diane Lane have 1 vote for Best when she wasn’t even there?!

      • Jessica
        0

It was a glitch in the system (Diane Lane autofilled, I should I have selected Diane Kruger — they’re right next to each other). This post literally takes me over 12 hours to construct; we’ve covered over 105 looks in the last five days. So sometimes I make mistakes. It’s fixed now — thanks for the heads up.

      • Cristina
        0

@ Sajorina, It is Shailene, not Shallene or Shaliene as you had mentioned.

      • Sajorina
        0

All right, GFY Jessica! I’m glad it’s fixed now! Thank you so much for all your hard work, it is greatly appreciated! I still wonder who voted for Diane Lane (before you fixed it)!

@Christina: While trying to correct Shailene’s name, I wrote Sha[Capital Letter i]lene, but here it looks like Sha[small letter L]lene! I know it’s Shailene (that’s what I was trying to point out to Jessica, who obviously understood and corrected, and not Shaillene (as it appears to be written) or Shaliene (as Jessica wrote it originally)! It’s all good now!

Glenn Close is just about the only one who struck me as memorable as I clicked through the slideshow … although GOOP is right behind her … Mena Suvari is hands down the worst … no one comes close … after Mena, I’d call it a three-way tie for worst-dressed among Anika Noni Rose, Ginnifer Godwin, Heidi Klum

    • Krusticle
      0

Carol, you’re reading my mind. Glenn Close first, also loved Louise Roe. And most hated topped out with Mena, Goodwin and Klum — with the yellow VenusOrSerena mustard dress coming up close.

    • Kristine
      0

I totally agree, Carol! Except that I don’t remember Anika Noni Whatsit’s dress at all.
On my worst-list as well: Maria Sharapova, what’s up with the Halloween skater-costume?!

    • Cynthia Coles
      0

Klum always goes short for red carpet. It’s a mistake. I had her as worse until Mena’s dress showed up.

  4. Dave

Leslie Mann for the out-of-nowhere win. Check it.

  5. zah

Busy for the best, I ADORED her dress…even though i know she won’t win.

And Viola for the worst, because she should have done so much better.

  6. TereLiz
    0

I really liked Leslie’s dress, too. She looked fab, simple styling, just enough sparkle for Oscar night.

Jessica’s A. McQueen dress is still my favorite, but I’m surprised by how much I liked Elizabeth Banks’ feathery-polka dot gown. It sure wasn’t safe, and I loved the silhouette!

  7. lisas
    0

Hard to pick this year. I loved Portman’s vintage polka dot (although I hated the diamond necklace she wore with it – it should have been a dark necklace and not so hefty).

For the worst though, it was a tough choice between Ginnifer Goodwin’s… thing and Gwen Stefani’s horrible, terrible no-good idea. What the hell. She believes herself a designer, and THAT is what she came up with for the Oscars? Shiny Waity-Katy pantyhose, clunky office platforms, and brassy hair? Topped with spider webbing? Really? What is going on at Chateau Stefani/Rossdale?

    • Patricia
      0

OMG I am SO with you @Lisas!! I LOATHE La Stinkfani…and in true “pop stars are not fashion designers” fashion, she does not disappoint. THO I have to say, MILEY WAS ATROCIOUS!!! Should have been more votes for her than La Stink.

    • Girlin
      0

Totally agree about Nat Portman’s necklace =- ROTTEN!!!!! Too big and chunky – it looked fake!

  8. Stefanie

Well, going through all those pictures just confirmed what I’ve been thinking all week: Oscars 2012 = UNDERWHELMING.

Best: Ellie Kemper for that great copper number.
Worst: Roony Mara. Seriously lady, you are in one of the biggest movies of the year, Im sure you had your pick of MANY MANY stunning dresses but you choose to wait until the morning of the event and you end up in that?! Maybe you should try a little bit harder. OH and btw, you dont have to be Lisbeth all the damn time! What happens when the trilogies are over? Then what? Are you still going to try to be her in your every day life? Yeah, find your own identity and then maybe people would like you a little more.

Wow, who knew I had such strong feelings about her.

    • Louise
      0

Weird! I picked Ellie Kemper too but it would’ve been between her, Rooney Mara if that thing had fit properly, Milla Jovovich and Nina Dobrev. And J-Lo looked awes, too.

  9. Sajorina
    0

This was hard!!! My vote for BEST went to Jessica Chastain, but I also loved Rooney Mara, Emma Stone (AfterParty Dress), Katie Holmes, Shailene Woodley (Ceremony Dress), Elizabeth Olsen & Judy Greer!

My vote for WORST went to Serena Williams, but I also hated Kat Graham, Sherri Shepard, Melissa McCarthy, Paula Patton & The Achy-Breaky Spawn! I think I loved/liked more outfits, than I hated outfits!

Here’s where the new design of GFY really falters, b/c there’s no way I’m flipping through each dress 1 at a time. Could you guys get your tech people to make a Gallery page for some of the super high volume posts like this? I know the idea is to get more page views, but there should be a line somewhere, a balance between ad revenue and reader convenient.

Also, there should be a way to correct an accidental vote in the polls. I voted for Jessica Chastain in both. Only meant to give her BEST.

    • Kristan
      0

      *reader convenience

    • Jessica
      0

You can scan through them. Go to the slideshow. See, under the pic there’s four smaller pics? Hover over them. You get an arrow, and you just just flip through it there.

    • GFY Heather
      0

In the old design for GFY, we didn’t have these at all, so I’d say new design wins.

      • Kristan
        0

I like the new design better overall, don’t get me wrong. But even the slider tip that Jessica gave me isn’t the same as a gallery (i.e., grid) would be.

I hope my comment didn’t come across as b*tchy. Wasn’t my intent at all!

    • niksmit
      0

I agree with Kristan. I still visit on occasion since the redesign, but it’s never stopped bothering me. I already use that little slider thing to scan through 4 at a time. I find the slideshows especially bothersome when the total number of images is close to or less than 4. I wish they were just in-line in the post. Definitely less page views from me since the redesign.

Nothing wrong with a slideshow or gallery, but please consider a different design the next you guys redesign. Maybe larger thumbnails or something.

Octavia edged out Chastain for the win for me. Partially good will points for really bringing it this awards season. Chastain was so inconsistent I just couldn’t give her the W.

  12. Willow
    0

I flipped between Octavia and Jessica Chastain but ended up going with Octavia.

Melissa McCarthy was my worst dressed, it was such an ugly dress! If it had of been deep green or purple then thing may have been different.

  13. laura

I still don’t know who to vote for best, nobody “wowed” me. As for worst I am voting for Angelina Jolie, because that leg thing was incredibly ridiculous!!! Like my pretend BFF Joan Rivers I feel like that kind of crap is what Lea Michelle does to get attention, but come on! You are Angelina FREACKIN Jolie!!! You don’t need to do that!! Phew, had to get that off my chest, have a happy weekend Fug Nation!

    • jean
      0

Laura, I personally hope it was a bet she lost with Brad. As in, “if you lose this, you need to do something ridicules at the Oscars, like talk to Ryan Seacrest or stick out your leg”. She just did it so awkwardly and weirdly and she’s not THAT unaware. It was a bet or something. Or a joke to their children. Maybe their oldest daughter is a ham and mommy was playing the ham. It felt like a joke.

    Best: Jessica Chastain/Gwyneth Paltrow

Worst: Everybody else on the list. Seriously they should fire their stylists.

    • Barbara
      0

Yes! I agree with Jade. It was all Meh and Blah, with the exception of Gwyneth and Mila Jovovich, who I voted for as best dressed. EVERYONE else should fire their stylists. Seriously.

  15. Heta

It was hard to choose, so I stuck with red carpet outfits to keep it a purely Oscar-worthy award. Thanks to you both for an incredible series of posts. It’s taken me nearly three days of goofing off to get through all the outfits; I can only imagine the time and effort you put into it! (It doesn’t surprise me that this one post is a 12-hour job!) Hats off!

On a side note, once the Stacy Kiebler girlfriend-model runs its course, I see Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stepping in to fill the post of Intern George’s arm candy, no?

  16. TaraMisu

Louise Roe was the best hands down and I still have no idea who she is :D

Ginnifer Goodwin, and Mena were tied for fugliest… I went with GG.

  17. Sandra
    +1

I know you guys are all Oscared-out, but after you’ve had a chance to recover please PLEASE post Livia Guggioli’s dress and your opinion of it. It’s kinda cracktackular for a lady who designs things as a day job. And there’s pocketses, preciousssss. We hates the pocketses. Her accessories are, of course, top-notch. ‘Specially the tall one. ;)

    • Heta
      +1

Yes, I felt that Livia Giuggioli was one of the worst dressed! Red baggy frumpiness! Thanks for reminding me.

  18. Suzie

I liked Gwyneth, Milla, Jessica, Octivia, Natalie, Ellie, Glenn– yeah, there was too many that I liked, so I voted for RDJ! Give it to the man!

I think Mena’s chicken costume was bad, but that Ogla girl had hidden a muppet under her skirt…

    • anny

Oh … I thought it was something else unspeakable, but I have to say Muppet is still pretty bad.

I can’t believe all the BEST votes for GOOP.

  24. Grace
    0

I can’t believe everyone didn’t vote Best for Octavia. She looked amazing and her dress suited her and fit her better than anyone else there. My close seconds were Leslie Mann (she gets overlooked) and Nina Dobrev who I think was wearing the J Mendel dress you covered on the runway (and I coveted).
    LILY COLLINS, what the????
P.S. Really not so interested in all the models/whoozats at the after party. Just show the main peeps at the ceremony next year please. Save me some RSI clicking through.

I’ll dive into this one with plenty of time (and a cool Blue Moon brew) after work today, but I just want you FugGals to know how much I enjoy all your work, and the quips, and the taste of elegance and all the stunning clothing. I’ll never get to Hollywood or New York fashion shows, but you bring them right to my desk in rural Idaho! Big high fives, and heartfelt thanks.

Is Vampire Bill really that much taller than SOOKEH in real life, especially while she is wearing heels? I can’t remember from the show, although he definitely looks like he represents the Lollipop Guild when standing next to Hot Eric.

According to IMDB, Stephen is 5’10″, Anna is 5’5″ & Alexander Skarsgård is 6’4″!

  27. Mair Mair
    0

Really hard. I went with Gwen Stefani for worst. Mena Suvari and Maria Sharapova were also in the running, but in the end, I decided frumpiness was worse than oddness. Rose Byrne for best, though I see I’m in a small minority with that one.

  28. taylor
    0

I agree with people saying it was an underwhelming year. That said, I had to give it Octavia. Not just for best dress (I actually liked Ellie Kemper’s dress a little better), but for overall styling. And a great bonus, she knows how to dress her body, which is always a win! Worst was harder, though: so many were so lackluster, but none were truly hideous. Or at least not to me.

And THANKS YOU GUYS! You do such great work for us to enjoy!

  31. Maria
    0

I also thought that no one was OVERWHELMING BEST. None of the dresses were OSCAR special. I did vote Octavia for the best though because I loved her dress and styling. Everything just worked on her wonderfully.

I voted Rooney for worst because really, it’s the OSCARS WHERE YOU’RE NOMINATED. SERIOUSLY. I expect MUCH more from someone who is nominated. Instead we ended up with boob awnings/ gills and a white dress. I think she would have looked lovely in a bolder color, especially with those eyes. I know it’s probably supposed to be a “statement” dress but the only statement it made to me was how last minute it was chosen.

  32. Ellyn
    0

i guess i’m one of the only ones who loved claire danes’ dress. i just feel like she always wears clothes so beautifully. i liked many others, too, though, including GOOP.

it was harder still to pick worst, but i went with gennifer goodwin. runner up was paz vega, who looked like a shipwreck with barnacles growing on her hip.

  33. Jo
    0

Thanks for the list! Can’t believe some of the ingrates on here whining about the length/content of the list- bla bla! My vote’s with Octavia. Goopy looked wan and blah to me. Mena S was the worst.

  34. Elaine
    0

A weak field, especially given that the missing included a lot of people who can usually be counted upon to be interesting/hilarious (positive or negative), e.g., Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hilary Swank, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Rita Wilson, etc. Actually, I’m surprised that Zeta-Jones and Wilson were missing as their hubby’s each received air time. Anyhoo, if you Fug Girls can stand it, I’d love to see a rundown on accessories.

I don’t know, I just really enjoyed Penelope Cruz’s. Not that the dress was mindblowing, but it emanated a movie star/princess/royalty vibe that made her fun to look at.

    • Penny
      0

I DID TOOOOOO! Yay! I thought Penelope Cruz looked so lovely when she came out, it fit in the right places and the skirt flowed so beautifully, the colour was gorgeous and shows bare shoulders while covering everything appropriate up. And it’s not hard to figure out from this that I hated, loathed and detested what Jennifer Lopez wore and revealed, although I wouldn’t have liked the dress very much even if it hadn’t been so gaping. I was flat out astounded to see that J-Lo was on best dressed lists the next day and that Penelope Cruz wasn’t.

  36. Charlotte

La Chastain was awesome, Milla smoked in an old-school way, but Octavia got my vote … because ladies with her kinds of curves need extra help and extra skill in red-carpet dressing.

  37. Audrey Jo
    0

To be honest: I really liked a lot very few looks at the ceremony, and most of the dresses were awful. I mean: this is the most glamorous window to the media, and people make choices as if they were out of their minds, so many gorgeous actresses looking weirdly tasteless, ugh!

  38. Angela
    0

I know you really liked Jessica Chastain’s dress, but every time I see it I think something was sick on her top.

  39. granny

A lackluster event. You’d think those people with all those stylists and designers at their beck and call could do a lot better. Glamor and taste were in short supply

We can! I noticed him too. He felt like a bodyguard or security, but in a gorgeous, Hollywood esque way. But he’s probably someone’s brother or date. Hee.

  44. Phoebe
    0

Natalie Portman was my favorite from the first moment I saw her dress! I so want it.

I had Heidi Klum all set as my worst dressed, but then the more pictures I saw of her in that yellow/gold ensemble, the more I began to totally love it! So my worst dressed? Maria Sharapova… it’s way too desperate attention-whoring college girl on Halloween!

  45. Emma
    0

Can I suggest separate polls for red carpet and after party? This is too loooong, and all the really important dresses (ie. red carpet) get lost in the after party ridiculousness, where anyone can turn up wearing anything.

  46. gav
    0

I accidentally voted Natalie Portman for both the best & worst, when in reality, Mena Suvari’s dress really was abhorrent.

  47. Scanderoon
    0

I voted Petra Nemcova for worst because she SHOULD be beautiful, but her dress looks like it cost $20 at Value Village and her eye makeup looks like it was done for her by a hooker. Yuck! It was a toss-up between her and Berenice Bejo, not because Berenice looked that bad but because her look was so misguided. Where/when did she get the impression that either red hair or a seafoam dress looked good with her complexion? Ugh.

I almost voted for the current leader, Mena Suvari, but that felt like a “stunt” dress and I don’t like to give people who wear stunt dresses more attention. (My fug-voting rules are a bit idiosyncratic.)

  48. D
    0

I was all set to vote Chastain – because I loved it since I first saw it, and I was so excited that she pulled something good out for the red carpet. However, when going through I realized (surprisingly) that the one I really loved most was Milla Jovovich. She intentionally went a little more “simple”, saying she was only a presenter and so that’s what she should do at her first Oscars…and yet, I think it’s so stunning. There’s nothing I dislike about it, and not even tiny alterations that I’d want to make. So even though I know most people won’t vote for her, I definitely went with Jovovich for the win!

  49. granny

Bar Refaeli?!? When did she get on the list?

  50. jean
    0

Seriously, what is wth all of the random Eastern European women? I think Vanessa Hudgens was the only Asian represented too! A very dull year for variety of looks (I’m not blaming the Fug Ladies for this, just the pictures nominated and hence the type of actors that showed up). Also, I was hoping for some Hamm. He was lurking about. He needs to do at least two quality movies a year so he shift into the Movie Star world where he belongs.

    • LibraryChick

Um, I thought Olivia Munn was part Chinese?

    • Jessica

For whatever reason, there were a TON of models there this year. WAY more than normal. Not sure why.

  51. jean
    0

I’m surprised at all the love for Jessica Chastain’s dress. It felt a bit like a really nice Ren Faire dress to me. Pretty color and all, but she could have walked onto the Game of Thrones set and filmed a scene and it wouldn’t have looked out of place.

The only dress I think I will really remember in three years is Octavia Spencer’s. I love it when a heavier person (other than Oprah who has all the money in the world) can nail it. Someone with Zoe Saldana’s face and figure can make massive mistakes and no biggie, but there are so many pitfalls for a less typical Hollywood body type. I suspec there will be slightly less flashy knock-off versions of that dress in the real world fairly soon.

  52. jess

Am I the only who loves Zoe Saldana’s look? She looks flawless

  53. AM

Best-I voted for Penelope Cruz, but also like Octavia Spencer, Melissa Leo and some others. The worst was so easy–Jennifer Lopez and the half-dressed dress.

  54. lori
    0

Chastain all the way for best dressed. I was torn on worst, but ultimately, I couldn’t get past the fact that Paz Vega looked like she had tree mushrooms growing out of her hip.

    • Poppy
      0

Lori, I also thought tree mushroom but that made the look all the more endearing to me, perhaps. At least it was more interesting than most of the dresses this year. Voted Chastain, too in the end.

  55. Memo
    0

I would just like to say that Alessandra Ambrosio looked absolutely STUNNING. She is one of those rare women who actually look best while pregnant. If only that could be me one day…haha, I can dream.

  56. Mahastee
    0

Milla Jovo for best. Shailene Woodley for worst. In all though, a really forgettable red carpet this year. Octavia for best earrings.

Can we please in future keep these polls strictly to the ceremony/event in question? The after-parties are not the same thing as the Oscars, and so surely shouldn’t be judged on the same scale? I mean the dress code and the whole vibe is completely different. Y’know?
I’m sure separate polls would also halve the workload for the Fug Girls. Well, it’s a thought :)

  57. Cherry

After the Fashion Week samples you guys posted, I was ready for some really beautiful Oscar dresses. What a let down! IMO you two picked far better pieces than these star stylists did. Seriously!

  58. Cherry

PS, at least Nina Dobrev was paying attention.

  59. Soapstef
    0

    Milla for the best.
    J. Lo (ceremony) for the worst! Sorry but the makeup line across her forehead sealed it for me.

  60. NYCGirl
    0

I love the embroidery on the bodice of Jessica Chastain’s dress, so Best-Dressed was an easy decision for me. Worst was more difficult a decision, but I ultimately voted for Anika Naked– I mean, Noni– Rose.

  61. CJ
    0

There was no clear winner for me — liked Emma Stone, Gwenyth, Rosie H-W, and Jessica Chastain’s McQueen dress, but Emma Stone herself shined at the Oscars so I gave it to her. Camilla the Chicken earned worst for me. Oh, gosh, I actually have to specify which chicken-y outfit I mean: Mena Suvari.

  62. Kathleen F.
    0

My top three were Glenn Close, Natalie Portman, and Jessica Chastain–all lovely looks unlikely to be mistaken for anyone else’s efforts. Honorable mentions go to Ellie Kemper, Leslie Mann, Milla Jovovich, Rose Byrne and Louise Roe–the first four for doing very cool and interesting stuff with sparkles, and the last for just going all out on an architectural risk and having it pay off massively.

Bottom three were Mena Suvari’s feathery WTFness, Karolina Kurkova’s Pantsuit of WTF, and Dianna Agron’s WTF nightgown.

  63. TonyG
    0

My Top 4: Milla Jovovich, Glenn Close, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

My Bottom 4: Olivia Munn, Mena Suvari, Gwen Stefani, and Venus Williams.

Didn’t expect Glenn Close’s fabulousness this year. She gets a special mention.

  64. Sharon

The vote is already over, but I have to comment! Missi Pyle’s dress actually made me dizzy. The cut is so crazy and unexpected, the scroll-down gave me the feeling of being carsick!!!

  65. Fleur

Always knew Alessandra Ambrosio was very pretty, but she is just stunning when pregnant! It’s the extra weight, it gives her such a healthy glow.

  66. Jesse
    0

I just keep wishing Chastain’s dress was not black. If it were some other colour that suited her skin tone that looked good with the gold it would’ve been so good and it would’ve been like “Haha guys, I’m not allergic to colour FOOLED YOU! Hey everyone, come see how good I look!” etc
