I mean, I love me some Middleton, but can we get a pattern up in here, girl? Or are you saving it all for the Olympics? Or, as we call it at GFY HQ, Awesometime. (We love the Olympics. I bonus love the Summer Olympics because Speedos.)
Elegant But Sort of Boringly Played, Kate Middleton

C’mon, cut her some slack. She has to be ‘proper’ which means NOT fashion-forward.
Besides, that chain belt (McQueen) is killer.
Does it need to be pointed out that Kate Middleton actually IS a brainy businesswoman at work in these photos?
This is her actual job, where the description states that she needs to be impeccably groomed and accessorized, while wearing well-fitted (and preferably British) clothes that keep her from being the center of attention at these events as much as possible.
Still love her. But I am a royalist from way back. I find them fun, and interesting, and kind of comforting because they remind me of my Gramma and Grampa, in that they were always talking about what the royal family were up to (as if they knew them).
I too love the Olympics and am very excited! I like the gymnastics and the rowing and the diving the most. But over all I prefer the Winter Olympics, but only because I’m Canadian and we typically do better at those sports.
Also, I love that first dress and the belt. Divine. Totally appropriate for a WWI exhibit opening.
Exactly what I was thinking, Sabina.
There should be a photobook called “How to Look Truly Classy” and include this and several Kate pictures.
I think she looks great. I mean, she’s at formal events, and Wills is always in a suit, so I think elegant but not overly hip is probably just exactly what she’s supposed to be wearing. She can save the more fun stuff for less boring occasions. And I like her hair back. And I love that she wears the same shoes all the time — she has to walk and stand around a lot! If she knows they are comfy and not hideous, then she should wear them every day. She’s perfect.
I agree completely about the event appropriateness. Honestly, this is now her day job and these are her work clothes. She definitely pulls out more interesting stuff for the more fun events.
I had the same exact thought about these being her work clothes. On that measure, the belt is the perfect touch of edgy glamor. Imagine how wonderful the world would be if everyone got that sleekly elegant for work!
I just love her. She could show up in some of the whacktackular stuff that VHudge wore to Coachella and I’d make excuses for her (“She’s in costume!”)
As for her shoes, they are almost always boring, but I strongly suspect that what’s happened is that she’s found 2 or 3 styles that are comfortable when you have to spend hours standing and looking pleasant, and she’s bought them in several colors. When she was Just Kate, she had a wider variety of footwear to choose from. Now she doesn’t have the luxury of making cranky faces when her feet are killing her and this damned parade simply WILL NOT END. How many guys in red jackets do we have to watch go by before we can just go find someplace to sit down?? You know.
It’s like you were in my head, Qwertygirl. Except you said it all better than I would have.
I love her. I love that she brought the ladylike back.
Dude in photo number 2 is a hottie.
reminds me of peeta.
Ha. I thought that too, what’s Peeta doing there?
I was just going to post that he looks like Peeta!
He totally looks like Peeta!
On that note: she could trot out Effie Trinket’s insane wardrobe and STILL look good.
I’m pretty sure those black suede pumps are different from the other black suede pumps she wore around for most of last year – BRACE YOURSELF – this year’s model appear to have a higher heel and a slight platform.
They are cute, though.
Having her hair pulled back is very attractive and really adds some oompf to her look.
1. The belt is hot.
2. Can this belt be worn with speedos?
3. Why don’t we ever get diving televised in the US anymore – that’s the best way to see a speedo on a handsome man (and they almost always are handsome, right? or is it because I never make it as far north as their heads?)
I think it’s not just the divers who are handsome, but ALL Olympians. There’s just something about people who are at the top of their field- they’re always good looking. I mean, even if they’re not traditionally handsome or beautiful, if they’re the best in the world at what they do, they have some sort of aura or something.
This has nothing to do with Kate, who is super attractive, like always – but I cannot BELIEVE that you guys haven’t begun chortling over being right about SMG being pregnant this season on Ringer!
We have, on Twitter.
I must have missed it – of course, my Twitter feed is out-of-control and I miss half of what’s posted on there.
THAT grey is a lovely shade. Nicer than her previous dress from yesterday (day before?) Have we seen that blue suit before? It looks familiar.
Oh, and as for speedos- there’s a reason yours truly stuck with competitive swimming for 5 years as a teenager. *grin*
Impeccably Played…as always. And, I really want that belt!
I adore the earrings she is wearing with the gray dress and would pay a serious amount of money for them. That is all.
They are Cassandra Goad, and yes, serious money might be necessary!
Me like the earrings too … and I think between the belt, earrings and semi-updo, the plain gray dress serves as a perfect backdrop for her accessories … she is perfect.
Love the earrings and belt. And she should wear her hair back more often, it looks really nice.
Can the son of Lord and Lady Rothermere be cast in the GFY British miniseries? I see him as the impish groom or chauffeur who befriends then romances the heroine when her sleazy fiance is accused of murder and turns out to be a prince or tin heir.
Certainly! Bring it up at the next story meeting!
I’ll bring the Earl Grey tea and shortbread! Also–after a few seconds with Google, we may need to open up a spot for Lord Rothermere, who apparently is Silver Foxy. http://www.journalistscharity.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lord-R2.jpg
Marriage to the heir agrees with her. She looks lovely.
Happy Anniversary, you crazy kids!
In that last picture, Will looks so much like a Windsor (specifically Prince Edward), it’s spooky.
Much prefer the gray dress and FABOOSH belt to the gray-and-turquoise number that received a Well Played yesterday. She is so, so lovely.
She looks smashing in the grey dress. yes it’s plain but everything fits so well and the hair pulled back is a nice change. She wears herself well.
Ha – I suppose I’m a brainy businesswoman and I have a dress very similar to the gray one, except the skirt on mine is slightly fuller, the sleeves are full-length, and the neckline is a deeper scoop. (I definitely have those – or, more likely, a cheaper version of those – shoes, but so do many many many women.) I like it because it’s very easy to wear and can be fun to accessorize – I have a fondness for big jewelry and since the dress is so simple, it’s a good backdrop. So of course, I think she looks great!
When did Wills get hair?
ooh….well spotted Tamdog! He does look like he has some sproutage up there which is good. He’s too young to be bald but I suppose genetics are not working in his favor, esp when you look at his uncle edward. FugGirls, I agree with you: Elegant yet Boring but she does it with a smile on her face, bless her.
Agreed about the patterns. Jazz it up a little, Kate! Also re: the makeup – holy cow, tone it down. It is aging you so much! It is not so good to look 35 when you are only 30.
I can’t blame her about the shoes, though. I have a very very similar pair and I also love them. They go with EVERYTHING.
Re the makeup: Agree. It looks like the method you figure out and get comfortable with at sixteen and just keep doing forever.
Playing the work clothes just right: adding interest with texture, decorative bits, accessories.
Like the demi-updo from the front . . . but in profile, this version reminds me way too much of Princesses Margaret and Anne …. noooo!
Re: Olympics – You should do a post on the British uniforms, which were designed by our fugly fav Stella McCartney, and received lot of criticism (including that there wasn’t enough red because apparently red makes your perform better and/or intimidates your opponents)
I second that motion! Please!
I don’t agree on the hair pulled back. She looks “generic Brit” like that… I don’t know how to explain it better. Her gorgeous mane flowing is much nicer.
I do agree on the makeup, less is more. Something subtle and understated will soften her beautiful features.
I love that her hair is back in the first three pictures. I mean, some of it is stil down, but it feels like a breath of fresh air from the the last two pictures, which are same-old same-old. The makeup does feel a bit much in the last two pictures tho. Call me boring, but I love Kate’s pumps (in a rainbow of neutral shades). They’re not super dowdy, and the suede gives them a little bit of funk as opposed to just being straight up leather.
While the grey dress isn’t particularly novel, I think it looks great on her and the belt is faboo. I am less sold on the second look – I love the color, in particular, but the fabric seems either too twee or too matronly for her. I mean, she still looks great and I don’t hate it– it’s got color and texture, but I’m not 100% on it either.
Speaking of the Olympics, you girls should fug the Opening Ceremonies, in particular the parade of nations. Hoo boy.
Also, son of Lord and Lady Rothmore is a hottie, a Peeta lookalike and could definitely show up here again. Just sayin.
I agree with everyone else on the shoes, I’m sure a. they are protocol and b. comfortable work shoes. When they did their US tour and attended parties in LA just as guests, her shoe choices where much more varied.
I can not wait for the Olympics!!!!! And in LONDON. It’s too perfect, my two favourites: Englishness and the Olympics.
Kate and Wills look good, I like his suit and I love her outfit as usual but you’re right, less boring would have been better!
Yeah for the grey dress, which is really fun to accessorize and is so great on her body – wow. The blue suit (arghhh, so granny-like, can’t get over the awful fabric), the strange half updo and the make-up are not so great.
I am in love with her. I also think that in a week when Pippa’s getting all kinds of awkward press, it’s definitely well played of her to lay on the attractive zzzzzzzs, no?
The fringe on the blue ensemble seems weird and unflattering, even if it DOES look like Chanel. Ditto the last time she wore it.
But they grey ensemble is WONDERFUL. So understated that it’s a statement, and the belt IS hot (as someone above said) and with the earrings and the slick updo it’s even more modern and chic than her usual. And crazy crazy flattering. For a sombre event. I think she nailed it.
Hair pulled back for the win! I think the dresses are totally event-appropriate, and the grey goes with a ghastly war exhibit as well as anything can. Blue for a South Pole talk is sort of amusingly on the nose. Now she needs to do a botanical garden so she can wear pink again.
Since these days “fashion-forward” consists of a vag-flash, duck lips, bronzer and a sex tape, I’m personally relieved to see her looking modest, classy and happy.
Aw, you guys know the palace forces her to wear closed “court shoes” at all official and family events. I’ll bet she lives in flip-flops at all other times [not]. She also probably has an extremely constrained list of official clothing styles as well. I think the duchess is doing very well under those constraints. She always looks polished and classy, unlike some other relatives I could name.
In other news, it appears that William dresses slightly to the right.
I’ve always assumed much of her wardrobe is mandated, like the stockings and closed-toed shoes. I think the only time I’ve seen her wear open-toed shoes is when she was at that party in LA in the lavender/gray short-sleeved dress, and the dress was long enough that you could barely see her shoes.
I think she looks lovely and stylish and that we should all remind ourselves that she is representing the British Monarchy, not going to a club, for God’s sake.
William clasps his hands just like his Dad.
I can’t get over her hair! Seriously, does she EVER have a bad air day? Ever?
Oops, sorry. Bad hair day! Bad air days are for allergies!
If elegant is boring, so be it.
God, these two just get more adorable every day.
Of course elite-level athletes are all good looking. They exercise for umpteen million hours and all have bangin’ hot bodies. There’s a reason we watch Nordic skiing, you know.
As for these pictures, did the GFY subscription not include any shots of the Cambridges making cute with that adorable new-born? Wills even grabbed the kid for a cuddle and Kate was clearly enchanted. Doesn’t mean anything one way or the other regarding their own plans for kids, but it was totally charming.
I don’t care for the wide neckline on the grey outfit. But that’s a small nit to pick.
I like the 1st outfit… The belt & clutch make that outfit & I like that she wore the high heels! The 2nd outfit is fine; the best thing about it is the color, which is beautiful on her! I can’t believe it’s been a year, but congratulations to them on their anniversary!
No “sort of” about it, though seldom has a style suited a celebrity’s personality more.
Mainly, I’m glad to see he’s been backing away from the double breasted suits. Have you no eyes, man? How can you think they look good on you?
If she’s going to stick with simple colours and sillhouettes – which do work for her – can she at least have a rummage through The Tower and get some jewels going? Please? For me. Surely they’re all just lying about waiting to be worn??
She looks perfect, especially in the grey dress with that way cool belt.
PS Only the Brits would call it the Scott-Amundsen race. It should be the Amundsen-Scott race because AMUNDSEN GOT TO THE SOUTH POLE FIRST. Sorry to shout but the centenary is just about when the Brits should be over it.
