Back when I worked at Television Without Pity, occasionally we would get hate mail, and while I almost always just deleted mine (although I did once write back and excoriate a kid who sent me something truly abusive from his university email address, which was fun) one of the things we would do — thanks to my friend Rick — would be respond to some of the dumber ones by simply saying, “YOU ARE A DELIGHT.” I encourage you to use this in our own life, as it’s a very handy retort that generally leaves the person without a comeback. You know, if they say, “no, YOU ARE,” you can just say, “thank you!” But be that as it may, over the years, I have starting telling people they are a delight and meaning it — that I actually find them delightful. It is like the irony has fallen off the saying. And so it is with total sincerity that I say: Alan Cumming, this is RIDICULOUS and you are a DELIGHT.
