Fug, Baby, Fug

Michelle Monaghan’s bangs are to her face what Jennifer Grey’s nose job was to hers: something that renders her totally unrecognizable. I am not a bang-hater — I HAVE bangs — but these bangs make her look like a totally different person, and considering the fact that Michelle Monaghan is ALREADY not very recognizable to the general public (sorry Michelle, but I’m afraid a lot of people think that was Katie Holmes in Mission Impossible Whatever), this seems like a weird thing to do to your brand, unless your PR plan is, “make me even less well-known to the general public,” which is actually possible. Maybe she’s trying to slowly withdraw from public life and become a wacky recluse!

I mean, look: She’s totally got wacky covered already here!

She looks (facially) like Emma Stone here.

  2. Dazie

    Poor Jennifer Grey. :(

  3. mary

If I hadn’t read that it was Michelle Monaghan, I would have SwORN it was Lara Flynn Boyle!

  4. Sally

Wait! What if we remade Alien but with a fashion theme and had TULLE bursting out of her breastbone???

  5. missdove

Wow! Jill St. John is looking awesome. She’s gotta be in her 60′s right?

  6. Lynne

She looks like a very elaborate tissue dispenser.

  7. Mikki

Dust ruffles on a dress are never a good option!

  8. Big Noise

That dress might be pretty if it weren’t for a) the tulle and b) whatever’s going on with that dress around her knees.

    • Christopher D

Um since the tulle and the knee thing with just a touch of the lace ugliness ARE the entire dress one might rephrase that as “That dress might be pretty if… it were another dress!” But we are all glad she wore it,, if only for Lynne’s comment “… tissue dispenser.”

    • NYCGirl

      Agreed, Big Noise…definite scroll-down fug.

  9. LoriK

@Lynne: I was thinking the same thing. She looks like a walking version of those overly-elaborate craft project tissue box covers by grandmother used to use. They were odd as tissue box covers. As a dress it’s totally ridiculous.

  10. Geemee

Those bangs are crazy heavy. The dress is just … NO. And are her toes abnormally short? I can’t stop staring at how much room is left in her shoes …

  11. that girl

This dress reminds me of a wedding favour that should be filled with Jordan almonds.

  12. Kiti

At first glance, I thought it was Lauren Holly! Poor Michelle…

    • Squirrel!

Yup, I’m on the Lauren Holly train, although I definitely can see Lara Flynn Boyle as well.

  13. Fuh Ugh

Dress provided by the Charo Bridal Collection

  14. Joyce

Her career is so odd! Just like the jutting tulle on her dress. The dress is very pretty though.

  15. Blanche

Just logically…conversely, if Monaghan wasn’t getting recognized before, I can see where she’d have nothing to lose by experimenting, right?

I like her face this way, right under big, dyed-auburn bangs. It’s pretty. It’s a little more generic, and more generic than Emma Stone, so yeah, maybe LFB territory. And since LFB apparently lost it and abandoned her own territory, it was open for Monaghan to usurp.

…But now, looking at the fugly, nutty dress, we have to address this concern: Does crazy ipso facto inhabit LFB territory?

  16. Libby

Oddly, her bangs echo the tulle curtains on her dress.

She looks kinda looks like the hot, cougar aunt of the bride who gets drunks and hits on all of the groomsmen.at the wedding reception. That’s memorable, if not in a good way.

    • RosieB

I was gonna say the same. Her dress definitely has its own set of bangs…two sets actually, one for the bodice & one for the skirt.

  17. Dana

I wonder how bad the other dresses she had to choose from were. I would cry if I had to wear something this fug in public.

  18. Lina

This is completely inexplicable. What is she doing?? Whose terrible advice is she following?

  19. jjdaddyo

I’ve always thought that she looks just like Justine Bateman.

  20. Katharine

This would make a great costume for Halloween, if she’s going as Miss Haversham (built-in tissues to cry into).

Like Olivia Wilde, the fringe detracts from a great face, and renders her less distinctive.

  21. Sajorina

I actually like the fabric of the dress, but the tulle ruffles are ridiculous and the bangs are not helping! Now, I’m wondering to which Vegas Wedding she wore this to previously?

  22. witjunkie

This has to look just absurd from the side. I like ruffles in theory, but inevitably when I try something on and look at it in a 3-way mirror, off it comes. Because I’m not pregnant.

  23. CB

I hate that the peplum is coming back. There is just no attractive way to integrate it with today’s silhouettes. And if you try and tell me differently I will stick my fingers in my ears and go LALALALLALALALALALALALA

FWIW, My friend was there and said she was an utter pill. Who with that level of recognition (read: no one) has their security guards shoo people away at a charity event?

  24. Leah M

Perhaps the bangs are simply rebellion. If she grew up with a Mom like mine, then she has “for heaven’s sake, cut your hair so people can see your pretty face” forever in a loop in her head. I break into a cold sweat if my hair touches an eyebrow.

As for the dress which is not good – if the ruffles HID a poochy belly I could see the point, but if, as the side view indicates, it might actually FRAME ones belly, I protest.

  25. Marianna

The dress looks like a really ugly, really fancy, extremely frothy napkin, the likes of which are found in terribly expensive restaurants where you pay for your food by the ounce and it costs $50 for a piece of bread. The bangs are pretty wretched too, — but! But. I love that hair color on her. Black always suited her really well, but I always dig it when people can go auburn and have it look so natural.

  26. jo

Maybe she grew them for the title role in “The Adventures of Young Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman”? And she’s about to film a scene where she is jilted at the altar due to her crazy dress and decides to restart her life out west?

  27. Wade

I need to see her next to Helena Bonham Carter to really be sure of her whack.

  28. vandalfan

I have yet to see any dress employing so much illusion netting that looks good.

  29. Lynne

First of all, glad y’all appreciated the tissue comment! Second, I just spied it on another site and the dress was identified as … wait for it… Marchesa. The ugliest house of style strikes again.

  30. marcia

she does have kind of a Miss Havesham thing going on.

  31. Louisa

Apparently, long heavy bangs are all the rage for ones who think they will appear more 20s than 30s if nobody can see their eyes. Bad advice results in bangs that are at least an inch too long, but still must be constantly trimmed and still take a long time to grow out again.

  32. kate

you can see more close up photos of the dress at this link below. it’s marchesa.
.except for the ruffles in the mid section..they seem unncessary!…and the odd, centered straight line of beading or embroidery from the waist to the top of the thighs, i think it’s sheer and silvery and pretty..

  33. Zoe

It’s the ghost of Lara Flynn Boyle…

  34. V

I saw the Lara Flynn Boyle resemblance as well, and had flashbacks to the ballerina tutu dress.
